Gli Spicy Brains nascono come un trio strumentale italiano composto da Luca Quiriconi (chitarra), Dario Grassi (batteria) e Ivan Barassi (basso). Il progetto si sviluppa attorno alla volontà di fondere generi apparentemente distanti ma uniti da una forte spinta dinamica: il Progressive Rock moderno, il Metal, deviazioni Funk nelle linee di basso (che a tratti possono ricordare l'approccio eclettico e ironico di band d'oltralpe come i Mörglbl) e costanti aperture psichedeliche.  Dopo aver catturato l'attenzione dell'etichetta indipendente Luminol Records, da sempre attenta alle derive Avant Garde, Post Rock e Prog sia artistiche che sociali, la band formalizza il proprio debutto sulla lunga distanza proprio con “Wait A Minute...”. Il disco è stato mixato da Davide Pagano agli Ultra Studio e masterizzato da Raimondo Maira, con un impianto grafico curato da Simonluca Spadanuda (Urbanmagic) e Gab.Gato. Non essendoci parole, i testi dell’album vanno cercati nella struttura drammaturgica dei pezzi. La band stessa ha dichiarato che l'approccio "Spicy Brains" ("cervelli piccanti/frizzanti") è prima di tutto uno stato mentale necessario per affrontare l'ascolto in modo attivo. I pezzi sono nati durante lunghi mesi di isolamento e successiva ripartenza, traducendo in musica la claustrofobia e il bisogno di evasione.
Titoli eccentrici e soluzioni armoniche inaspettate servono a smorzare l'autocompiacimento tecnico tipico di certo Progressive Rock, offrendo una valvola di sfogo ironica alle storture del quotidiano. Le "interferenze" del titolo si traducono in continui cambi di tempo e riff geometrici che introducono l'ascoltatore nella complessità cerebrale del trio. L'assenza della voce sposta quindi il focus sul viaggio interiore dell'ascoltatore, stimolato da continui contrasti dinamici attraverso il relax del Funk contro la spinta del Metal.
L'album si sviluppa lungo 9 tracce che mettono in mostra un interplay serrato e un'ottima transizione tra momenti spiccatamente pesanti e groove irresistibili ad iniziare da “Cosmic Interferenc”. “Leaving The Dream” è invece una traccia dal respiro più atmosferico in cui la chitarra tesse trame melodiche sospese, prima che la sezione ritmica prenda il sopravvento spostando il baricentro verso un Prog Metal moderno e compatto. Ottimo il lavoro al basso da parte di Barassi.
La title-track funge da perfetto manifesto programmatico. È un invito a fermarsi, un arresto del tempo scandito da stop-and-go continui, dove il basso assume un ruolo marcatamente Funky e pulsante, dialogando alla pari con le evoluzioni della sei corde. “Downbeat” è costruita su tempi dispari e su un'ossatura ritmica quadrata ma imprevedibile, ed esplora le sfumature più cupe e terrene del sound del trio. L’ironia del gruppo traspare dal titolo “Camel Fart”, pezzo di altissimo contenuto tecnico, e dimostra come la complessità esecutiva possa sposarsi con il divertimento puro.
Segue “Friends (Spicy Friendship)”, che celebra l'alchimia e la coesione umana del trio. Le linee melodiche si fanno più calde ed empatiche, evidenziando il lato più prettamente Rock e comunicativo della loro musica. La Psichedelia ipnotica viene messa in luce nel brano “Cyclic Recycle”, ottimo esempio di come gli Spicy Brains sappiano gestire la tensione interna a un brano attraverso il layering sonoro. Ed è la volta del Metal Prog attraverso “Pumapumku”, che prende il nome dal celebre sito archeologico boliviano noto per i suoi blocchi di pietra megalitici incastrati al millimetro. Una metafora perfetta per l'architettura sonora del pezzo, fatta di incastri ritmici pesanti, precisi e geometrici.
Infine “Sunny Midnight Date” gioca sui contrasti (sole/mezzanotte). Mette in mostra un mood obliquo, sospeso tra Psichedelia notturna e sprazzi di luce Rock.
“Wait A Minute...” si rivela così un eccellente manifesto di Art Prog Rock strumentale nostrano, solido, privo di barriere di genere e suonato con una freschezza esecutiva encomiabile. MS

Spicy Brains originated as an Italian instrumental trio consisting of Luca Quiriconi (guitar), Dario Grassi (drums), and Ivan Barassi (bass). The project developed around the desire to blend apparently distant genres that are nonetheless united by a strong dynamic drive: modern Progressive Rock, Metal, Funk deviations in the basslines (which at times may recall the eclectic and ironic approach of transalpine bands like Mörglbl), and constant psychedelic openings. After catching the attention of the independent label Luminol Records—which has always been attentive to Avant-Garde, Post-Rock, and Prog movements on both artistic and social levels—the band formalized their full-length debut precisely with “Wait A Minute...”. The record was mixed by Davide Pagano at Ultra Studio and mastered by Raimondo Maira, with artwork and graphics handled by Simonluca Spadanuda (Urbanmagic) and Gab.Gato. Since there are no lyrics, the album's concept must be found in the dramaturgical structure of the pieces. The band themselves stated that the "Spicy Brains" ("cervelli piccanti/frizzanti") approach is first and foremost a state of mind required to approach the listening experience actively. The tracks were born during long months of isolation and the subsequent restart, translating claustrophobia and the need for escapism into music.
Eccentric titles and unexpected harmonic solutions serve to soften the technical self-indulgence typical of certain Progressive Rock, offering an ironic outlet for the distortions of everyday life. The "interferenze" of the title translate into continuous time signature changes and geometric riffs that introduce the listener to the trio's cerebral complexity. The absence of vocals thus shifts the focus onto the listener's inner journey, stimulated by continuous dynamic contrasts through the relaxation of Funk against the drive of Metal.
The album unfolds across 9 tracks that showcase a tight interplay and an excellent transition between markedly heavy moments and irresistible grooves, starting with “Cosmic Interferenc”. “Leaving The Dream”, on the other hand, is a track with a more atmospheric breath in which the guitar weaves suspended melodic textures before the rhythm section takes over, shifting the center of gravity toward a modern and compact Prog Metal. Excellent bass work by Barassi.
The title track serves as a perfect programmatic manifesto. It is an invitation to pause, a halting of time punctuated by continuous stop-and-go moments, where the bass assumes a markedly Funky and pulsating role, dialoguing on equal terms with the evolutions of the six-string. “Downbeat” is built on odd time signatures and a square yet unpredictable rhythmic backbone, exploring the darker and more earthly nuances of the trio's sound. The band's irony shines through the title “Camel Fart”, a piece of very high technical content, demonstrating how executive complexity can marry pure fun.
Next is “Friends (Spicy Friendship)”, which celebrates the trio's alchemy and human cohesion. The melodic lines become warmer and more empathetic, highlighting the more purely Rock and communicative side of their music. Hypnotic Psychedelia is brought to light in the track “Cyclic Recycle”, an excellent example of how Spicy Brains manage the internal tension of a song through sonic layering. And then it is the turn of Prog Metal with “Pumapumku”, named after the famous Bolivian archaeological site known for its megalithic stone blocks fitted together to the millimeter. A perfect metaphor for the song's sonic architecture, made of heavy, precise, and geometric rhythmic interlockings.
Finally, “Sunny Midnight Date” plays on contrasts (sun/midnight). It showcases an oblique mood, suspended between nocturnal Psychedelia and flashes of Rock light.
“Wait A Minute...” thus reveals itself to be an excellent manifesto of homegrown instrumental Art Prog Rock: solid, free of genre barriers, and played with commendable executive freshness. MS
