Non nascondo il mio divertimento nel navigare nel web e di imbattermi qualche volta in una band italiana poco pubblicizzata o appena formata. Di base il Rock è ciò che spesso ho cercato durante tutta la mia esistenza, possa questo essere “Progressivo” che Hard, perché lo ritengo un vero e proprio stile di vita e sorrido quando leggo che molti lo danno per morto. Internet vi può dare la risposta cari ragazzi.
Questa volta mi sono incrociato con la musica della band aostana Space Traffic. "On The Other Side" è il secondo capitolo discografico e rappresenta una vera e propria prova di maturità per il trio, che espande i confini del proprio sound offrendo un'esperienza d'ascolto immersiva e spirituale. Loro sono Marco Pica (basso, voce e fondatore, autore dei testi e mente dietro le linee melodiche), Fabio Baldassarri (chitarra), e Florian Bua (batteria).
Dopo il debutto nel 2018 con il concept album “Numbness”, incentrato sul risveglio dal torpore della quotidianità, la band attraversa cambi di formazione e la complessa parentesi pandemica. La svolta arriva grazie all'incontro con Michele Picciurro. Insieme a lui, decidono di registrare il nuovo materiale interamente dal vivo nei suoi home studio (con il supporto degli spazi di Cosimo Pellicanò). Questa scelta cattura l'interazione spontanea e l'energia viscerale che il trio esprime sul palco, fuggendo dalle produzioni moderne eccessivamente levigate. Musicalmente, l’album fonde Space Rock, Psichedelia e Grunge.
All’ascolto ho avuto come la sensazione che il disco non ha un vero inizio e non cerca una fine. Si apre con un varco e si chiude ritornando al punto di partenza, concepito per essere ascoltato in loop continuo.
“Open The Doors” più che una canzone, è una vera e propria chiave d'accesso. Un'introduzione strumentale e d'atmosfera che apre un varco nello spazio tempo sonoro. Serve a resettare i canali uditivi dell'ascoltatore, preparandolo a scivolare dall'altra parte dello specchio. Così con “Jungle” il ritmo si fa subito serrato. Chitarre ruvide e una sezione ritmica incalzante dipingono una giungla che non è fatta di alberi, ma di cemento, caos quotidiano e trappole mentali. Il testo evoca la necessità di muoversi agilmente tra le liane delle aspettative altrui per non farsi inghiottire dalla routine.
La Psichedelia diventa più densa con “Pictures” e ruota attorno al concetto di fotografia mentale. Le immagini che accumuliamo durante la vita diventano istantanee che a volte ci rassicurano e altre ci imprigionano. I riff di chitarra fluttuano imitandosi e rincorrendosi, creando un effetto quasi ipnotico.
Fra i brani che ho maggiormente gradito ci sono “Looking Forward” dal retrogusto Punk. La batteria di Florian Bua spinge la band in avanti in un uptempo Rock granitico. Il testo esprime la necessità viscerale di non guardarsi indietro, di spezzare le catene dei rimpianti e proiettarsi verso l'ignoto con coraggio e determinazione. A seguire la title track “On The Other Side”, un equilibrio instabile tra il caos terrestre e l'aspirazione verso qualcosa di trascendente e “A Deeper Dream”, un viaggio lisergico nei meandri del sonno e dell'inconscio. Il ritmo rallenta, i suoni si espandono e l'ascoltatore viene cullato in un limbo onirico denso di feedback e suggestioni fluttuanti.
Alcune sbavature ci sono, malgrado l’entusiasmo e le buone idee, e riguardano a volte la parte vocale non sempre pulita nella tonalità, ma siamo nel campo del Rock e permettetemi di dire che può andare bene anche così. I Space Traffic per il sottoscritto è stata una bella sorpresa. Bravi. MS

I make no secret of my enjoyment in browsing the web and occasionally stumbling upon a little-publicized or newly formed Italian band. Basically, Rock is what I have often sought throughout my entire existence, be it “Progressivo” or Hard, because I consider it a true lifestyle and I smile when I read that many consider it dead. The internet can give you the answer, my dear guys.
This time I crossed paths with the music of the Aosta-based band Space Traffic. "On The Other Side" is their second record and represents a true test of maturity for the trio, which expands the boundaries of its sound, offering an immersive and spiritual listening experience. They are Marco Pica (bass, vocals and founder, lyricist and the mind behind the melodic lines), Fabio Baldassarri (guitar), and Florian Bua (drums).
After their debut in 2018 with the concept album “Numbness”, centered on awakening from the numbness of everyday life, the band went through lineup changes and the complex pandemic parenthesis. The turning point came thanks to the meeting with Michele Picciurro. Together with him, they decided to record the new material entirely live in his home studios (with the support of Cosimo Pellicanò's spaces). This choice captures the spontaneous interaction and visceral energy that the trio expresses on stage, escaping from excessively polished modern productions. Musically, the album blends Space Rock, Psychedelia, and Grunge.
Upon listening, I had the feeling that the record has no real beginning and does not seek an end. It opens with a passage and closes by returning to the starting point, conceived to be listened to in a continuous loop.
“Open The Doors”, more than a song, is a true access key. An instrumental and atmospheric introduction that opens a rift in sonic space-time. It serves to reset the listener's auditory channels, preparing them to slip to the other side of the looking glass. Thus, with “Jungle” the rhythm immediately becomes tight. Raw guitars and a pressing rhythm section paint a jungle that is not made of trees, but of concrete, daily chaos, and mental traps. The lyrics evoke the need to move agilely among the vines of others' expectations so as not to be swallowed up by routine.
The Psychedelia becomes denser with “Pictures” and revolves around the concept of a mental photograph. The images we accumulate during life become snapshots that sometimes reassure us and other times imprison us. The guitar riffs float, imitating and chasing each other, creating an almost hypnotic effect.
Among the tracks I enjoyed the most is “Looking Forward” with its Punk aftertaste. Florian Bua's drums push the band forward in a rock-solid uptempo Rock. The lyrics express the visceral need not to look back, to break the chains of regrets, and to project oneself into the unknown with courage and determination. Following next is the title track “On The Other Side”, an unstable balance between earthly chaos and the aspiration toward something transcendent, and “A Deeper Dream”, a lysergic journey into the depths of sleep and the unconscious. The rhythm slows down, the sounds expand, and the listener is cradled in a dreamlike limbo dense with feedback and floating suggestions.
There are a few flaws, despite the enthusiasm and good ideas, and they sometimes concern the vocals, which are not always clean in pitch, but we are in the realm of Rock, and allow me to say that it can be fine just like that. Space Traffic was a pleasant surprise for me. Well done. MS
