UNA SANA MALATTIA – IL ROCK PROGRESSIVO
Mito e realtà, fra passato, presente e futuro

Come
a centinaia, viene quindi spontaneo chiedersi cos’altro si potrebbe aggiungere all’argomento,
collezionismo Prog in Italia.
titolo stesso, "Una Sana Malattia", racchiude perfettamente l'essenza
tradizione classica e slancio teatrale.
Records), Stefano Olivieri, Tino Tozzi, Alessandro Corvaglia, Moreno Lenzi, Massimo
Volpi, Lino Vairetti (Osanna), Luca Sparagna (Orme), Aligi Pasqualetto (Orme), Michele Bon
(Orme), Michi Dei Rossi (Orme).
Uno
MS

As you well know, hundreds of books regarding the
topic of “Rock Progressivo” have been released, so it comes naturally to wonder
what else could be added to the subject; however, this would be a superficial
concept because the genre is not just music, but an ever-evolving attitude. It
moves forward with the times and can therefore tend toward infinity, except for
the analyses of those who pause to speak only of the boom years: the '70s.
But there are also those who approach the subject with
the love, passion, and competence of someone who has followed the evolution of
the scene since they were a kid.
"Una Sana Malattia. Il Rock Progressivo" was
born from the synergy of the two authors Alberto Voglini and Mauro Pini,
well-known figures in the environment of Prog criticism and collecting in
Italy.
The style with which they face this journey stands out
for being rigorous yet extremely informative and emotional. Despite the
analytical approach and the pinpoint precision in historical and discographical
details, the writing always maintains a strong charge of enthusiasm.
The title itself, "Una Sana Malattia",
perfectly encapsulates the essence of the essay and the approach with which
they tackle the subject. Progressive Rock is seen not simply as a musical
genre, but as a true "ossessione positiva" (a healthy illness,
indeed), capable of captivating the listener through the complexity of the
structures, the lyricism of the compositions, and the conceptual ambition. It
is a tribute to that visceral passion that drives enthusiasts and collectors to
dissect every single note, cover art, or lineup.
Therefore, the volume is not limited to a cold
encyclopedic chronicle, but develops as a true reasoned journey through the
golden age of the genre and its subsequent evolutions. The authors contextualize the birth of the movement
between the late '60s and early '70s, analyzing how Rock merged with classical
music, Jazz, avant-garde, and Folk. It does not exclude the sociological
aspect, in which Prog is examined as a mirror of an era of great cultural
ferment and utopias. Ample space is dedicated to the historical pillars of
the genre, such as King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, Jethro Tull,
and Gentle Giant, which are examined both from an exquisitely musical
perspective (technique, instrumental innovations, the use of synthesizers and
the Mellotron) and from a lyrical and conceptual point of view (concept albums,
as well as mythological, fantasy, or socially critical themes). Particularly interesting is the focus on Italy, a
fertile and original cradle of artists. The journey retraces the deeds of
legendary bands like PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi), Banco del Mutuo Soccorso,
Le Orme, Area, and Il Balletto di Bronzo, highlighting the uniqueness of the
Italian sound, deeply infused with Mediterranean melody, classical tradition,
and theatrical flair. Numerous guests
contribute to the work with their expertise, including several interviewees:
Loris Furlan (Lizard Records), Stefano Olivieri, Tino Tozzi, Alessandro
Corvaglia, Moreno Lenzi, Massimo Volpi, Lino Vairetti (Osanna), Luca Sparagna (Orme),
Aligi Pasqualetto (Orme), Michele Bon (Orme), and Michi Dei Rossi (Orme). One of the
strengths of the text is its practical utility for the reader. One of the strengths of the text is its practical
utility for the reader. The volume is enriched with insights, targeted reviews,
and listening guides that help both the neophyte orient themselves among
essential masterpieces, and the long-time enthusiast rediscover hidden pearls
or minor gems of the underground scene. In the vast landscape of publications on Prog,
"Una Sana Malattia" carves out an important space because it manages
to create a synthesis, combining the precision of musical non-fiction with the
pleasantness of the narrative. It is a book recommended both to those who want
to understand why, more than fifty years later, those complex twenty-minute
suites continue to exert a magnetic fascination, and to those looking for an
authoritative compass to navigate the grooves of a genre that has never stopped
daring. Thanks also for the citations in the bibliography. For a lean and enjoyable read, perhaps even while on
holiday. MS
