Quando la musica esce di getto e si è in buona compagnia, non servono molti orpelli per emozionare l’ascoltatore, le cose naturali sono spesso quelle riuscite meglio.
Nei pressi di Firenze, nel 2025, quattro musicisti si incontrano per dare vita a un nuovo progetto dal nome Zamen Off. Loro sono Marco Visconti (batteria, già attivo in band quali N.O.C.H., Dreadful Omen, Sexual Hurricane, Gorefuck e molte altre), Vincenzo Casini Raggi (tastiere e componente della storica band rock-dark-wave Soul Hunters), Massimiliano Dionigi (basso, attivo anche con Juglans Regia e Creature Di Sabbia) e Andrea Brighi (chitarra, voce). L’alchimia fra i componenti ha subito funzionato e “Your New Mind” ne è il risultato.
Nella loro musica aleggiano Progressive Rock, Psichedelia, New Wave, Hard Rock e altro ancora, a testimonianza di una cultura musicale a tutto tondo. I quattro brani racchiusi nel lavoro sono stati registrati quasi del tutto in presa diretta in un giorno e mezzo, più due dedicati al mixaggio.
Trame atmosferiche e dinamiche chiaroscurali si susseguono elargendo un'energia di facile presa emotiva. L'intreccio tra chitarre evocative, sezioni ritmiche sinuose e inserti di tastiere o synth crea un impatto visionario e avvolgente sin dal primo strumentale, intitolato “I Talk To The Light”, dove è la chitarra a dettare le melodie principali. Il brano è dedicato alla memoria di Nicola Vannini, cantante dei Diaframma venuto a mancare il 18 novembre 2025. Sono quasi sei minuti d’intensità trascinante che possono mettere d’accordo sia gli appassionati di Progressive Rock sia gli amanti del Rock in senso generale.
“Ashes Fade, Ancient Shore” evoca immagini di decadimento e memoria. L’apertura è affidata alla chitarra acustica per un movimento nostalgico su cui Brighi narra il testo. Aperture in stile Porcupine Tree lasciano intravedere qualche raggio di sole, così come il bell'assolo della suddetta chitarra, che richiama gli anni ’70 e certi movimenti cari ai Pink Floyd. Gli effetti di tastiera fanno da sottofondo e legano l'intero movimento acustico.
Torna il ritmo con la title track “Your New Mind”, dove la "nuova mente" è il risultato di un processo di decondizionamento dalle vecchie paure e dalle sovrastrutture mentali. Ancora una volta il ritornello si fa etereo, per poi alternarsi con una batteria serrata e pulsante. Buoni sia il lavoro al basso sia il frangente oscuro e psichedelico, ma la chicca risiede nel finale, dove tastiere in pieno stile Neo Prog rilasciano note dal sentore anni ’80.
La conclusione spetta ai quasi nove minuti di “Let Me Have Some (Today)”, che si apre con basso e batteria in dialogo. Il titolo sembra una richiesta accorata di vivere il presente, una sorta di "carpe diem" sofferto e viscerale. Numerosi i cambi di tempo, tanto per ricordare che ci troviamo sempre in ambito Progressive Rock, con una costante ricerca di nuove soluzioni poiché (e va sottolineato) la musica dei Zamen Off non è di certo scontata. La coda finale abbandona ogni freno, lasciando spazio a un magma di feedback e melodie di chitarra elettrica ad ampio respiro che chiudono l'opera con grande solennità.
Bello l’artwork di Gianromeo Ataffi, con graphic design e direzione artistica curati da Andrea Brighi: disegni a pastello alquanto “progressive” e (una volta tanto) un testo ben leggibile!
Nonostante la brevità complessiva, che posiziona l’opera a metà strada tra l’EP d’impatto e il mini-concept conciso, “Your New Mind” riesce a sintetizzare con rara nitidezza la maturità espressiva dei Zamen Off. È un lavoro di chiaroscuri e ripartenze, capace di bilanciare la tensione del Post Prog più viscerale con una spiccata sensibilità melodica e una cura lirica mai banale. Un ascolto denso, privo di tempi morti, che pone le basi per uno sviluppo artistico di ben più ampia portata. Ascoltare per credere… Io ci credo! MS

When music flows straight from the heart and you're in good company, there is no need for unnecessary frills to move the listener: natural things are often the ones that turn out best.
Near Florence, in 2025, four musicians came together to give life to a new project named Zamen Off. They are Marco Visconti (drums, also active in bands such as N.O.C.H., Dreadful Omen, Sexual Hurricane, Gorefuck, and many others), Vincenzo Casini Raggi (keyboards and member of the historic rock-dark-wave band Soul Hunters), Massimiliano Dionigi (bass, also active with Juglans Regia and Creature Di Sabbia), and Andrea Brighi (guitar, vocals). The alchemy among the members clicked immediately, and “Your New Mind” is the result.
Floating through their music are Progressive Rock, Psychedelia, New Wave, Hard Rock, and more, testifying to the members' well-rounded musical background. The four tracks contained in the work were recorded almost entirely live in the studio over a day and a half, plus two days dedicated to mixing.
Atmospheric textures and chiaroscuro dynamics follow one another, delivering an energy with immediate emotional appeal. The interplay between evocative guitars, sinuous rhythm sections, and keyboard or synth passages creates a visionary, enveloping impact right from the opening instrumental, titled “I Talk To The Light”, where the guitar leads the main melodies. The track is dedicated to the memory of Nicola Vannini, singer of Diaframma, who passed away on November 18, 2025. It offers nearly six minutes of compelling intensity capable of appealing to both Progressive Rock enthusiasts and general rock lovers alike.
“Ashes Fade, Ancient Shore” evokes imagery of decay and memory. The opening is entrusted to an acoustic guitar for a nostalgic movement over which Brighi narrates the lyrics. Porcupine Tree-style openings let a few rays of sunshine break through, as does the fine solo by the aforementioned guitar, which recalls the 1970s and certain movements dear to Pink Floyd. Keyboard effects hover in the background, tying the entire acoustic movement together.
Rhythm returns with the title track, “Your New Mind”, where the "new mind" is the outcome of a process of unconditioning from old fears and mental superstructures. Once again, the chorus turns ethereal, alternating with tight, pulsing drums. Both the basswork and the dark, psychedelic passage are strong, but the real gem lies in the finale, where keyboards in full Neo-Prog fashion release notes with a distinct 1980s flavor.
The conclusion is left to the nearly nine minutes of “Let Me Have Some (Today)”, which opens with a dialogue between bass and drums. The title feels like a heartfelt plea to live in the present—a sort of pained, visceral "carpe diem". Time signature changes abound, just to remind us that we are firmly in Progressive Rock territory, featuring a constant search for fresh solutions because (and this must be stressed) Zamen Off's music is certainly anything but predictable. The final coda lets go of all restraints, giving way to a magma of feedback and sweeping electric guitar melodies that close the album with great solemnity.
The artwork by Gianromeo Ataffi is lovely, with graphic design and art direction handled by Andrea Brighi: pastel drawings that are quite “progressive” and (for once) text that is easily readable!
Despite its overall brevity, which places the release halfway between a hard-hitting EP and a concise mini-concept, “Your New Mind” manages to synthesize Zamen Off's expressive maturity with rare clarity. It is a work of light and shadow, restarts and build-ups, capable of balancing the tension of visceral Post-Prog with a keen melodic sensibility and thoughtful lyrics. A dense listen with no dull moments, laying the groundwork for a far broader artistic trajectory. Hearing is believing… and I believe! MS
