The Vicious Head Society

THE VICIOUS HEAD SOCIETY - Call Of The Void
Crime Records
Genere: Progressive Metal
Supporto: 2LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026

Behind the name The Vicious Head Society is the mind of Irish multi-instrumentalist and composer Graham Keane (originally from Kilkenny). After years spent in the underground scene, Keane launched the project in 2017 with the album “Abject Tomorrow”, praised by critics alongside progressive metal giants like Symphony X, Dream Theater, and Ayreon.
Rather than forming a band with a fixed line-up, Keane writes and arranges the entire work before surrounding himself with top-tier guests and performers capable of shaping his musical vision; a modus operandi dear to other great composers, such as Arjen Anthony Lucassen of the Ayreon project, just to give an example.
Compared to his earlier works, which were more tied to Symphonic Prog and sci-fi concepts, “Call Of The Void” marks a darker, more modern, and introspective turn. The title refers to the psychological phenomenon of the «appel du vide», the brief and inexplicable urge to jump when standing at the edge of a cliff, using it as a metaphor to explore depression, isolation, self-destruction, and the search for an inner light. For this album, Keane recruited Nathan Max on vocals (capable of shifting from melodic cleans to grittier passages), the virtuous Klemen Markelj on drums, Matheus Manente on bass, and Nahuel Ramos on synths. The guest list features Paul Phillips (bass), Pat Byrne (bass), Alec Noonan (backing vocals), Wilmer Waarbroek (vocals), Bertrand Juve (sax), and Sareeta (violin).
The album is conceived as a long emotional journey of over 50 minutes, skillfully balanced between hard-hitting tracks and epic, sprawling compositions.
“Fractured” features 7-string guitars with punchy, rhythmic riffs, supported by atmospheric synths. The structure alternates tense verses with a soaring, melodic chorus, delivering Prog Metal that remains enjoyable even for ears less accustomed to heavy, distorted sounds. The lyrics introduce the theme of mental fragmentation, representing the moment an individual's inner balance shatters under the pressure of anxiety and trauma. Keane steps up the intensity in “The Edge Of Time”, where the rhythm section takes center stage with constant time-signature changes and odd meters, while the keyboards duet with the lead guitar.
“Holding On To Forever” showcases the more intimate side of the project, while still building toward an inevitably powerful sonic crescendo. The instrumental sections are clean and never chaotic, much like the vocal parts, which are enriched by harmonies and effects. The track reflects on the weight of the past and the inability to let go of faded memories or bonds, in a desperate attempt to make eternal what was destined to end.
Everything flows smoothly along the genre's tracks without ever getting dull, thanks to well-crafted arrangements. However, I would like to say a few words about the closing suite “Distant Lights Of Home”, a true gem of the album. It manages to alternate classic Prog Metal sections with symphonic and operatic elements—a window into deeply impactful music where even brief growled vocals find a fitting place.
What works in “Call Of The Void” is precisely the variety of intent without ever falling into the trap of the cliché, a challenging goal given that the genre is often relegated to pure technique and high-caliber instrumental passages that can sometimes sound alike… Many have done it. Here, The Vicious Head Society demonstrates great care and often succeeds, delivering a result that truly possesses personality. Plenty of irons in the fire, but with distinct, unburnt flavors.
