Alberto Rigoni - Michael Manring - Stuart Hamm

ALBERTO RIGONI – MICHAEL MANRING – STUART HAMM - Dystopia
Melodic Revolution Records
Genere: Progressive Rock strumentale
Supporto: CD / Digital / Bandcamp – 2026

Segue “Entropia”, dove l’inizio rimanda a certi King Crimson.
MS

ALBERTO RIGONI – MICHAEL MANRING – STUART HAMM - Dystopia
Melodic Revolution Records
Genre: Instrumental Progressive Rock
Format: CD / Digital / Bandcamp – 2026

It isn't often that one comes across a trio of bassists, especially when they are exceptional musicians already well-established in the music scene. The trio composed of Alberto Rigoni, Michael Manring, and Stuart Hamm represents a true "dream team" for anyone who loves the electric bass. When three virtuosos of this caliber come together, the risk is often that of witnessing a mere display of technique; in “Dystopia”, however, the three have managed to place their virtuosity at the service of atmosphere, composition, and a very specific narrative theme. Stuart Hamm is a living legend of Rock and Fusion bass, famous for his groundbreaking work alongside guitarists of the caliber of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson, as well as for his two-handed tapping techniques.
Michael Manring is none other than the student of the famous Jaco Pastorius. Manring is an undisputed master of expressiveness and the fretless bass, known for his innovative approach to the instrument, including the frequent use of open tunings altered in real time via D-Tuner pegs.
Alberto Rigoni enjoys an international reputation, known for his rich solo discography ranging from Prog Rock to Jazz Fusion and Ambient, as well as for his role in TwinSpirits. Rigoni is also the true organizational mind and the glue holding this project together. The origin of the project dates back to the period marked by the pandemic. Driven by the artistic need to create something unique during a time of global isolation, he reached out to the other two musicians to propose an album focused solely on the various expressions of the electric bass, enriched by rhythms and keyboards where necessary. The fundamental idea was not to create a record of speed duels, but rather to experiment with frequencies, sonic textures, and layering. Each bassist brought his own unique voice: Hamm providing the energy and melodic-rhythmic Rock sensibility, Manring contributing the poetic color, the singing fretless tones, and surreal atmospheres, while Rigoni laid down the foundations, modern grooves, and overall compositional structure.
They were joined in the project by exceptional guest musicians such as drummer Thomas Lang and guitarist Marco Sfogli, lending the work a solid and powerful sonic impact.
“Dystopia”, divided into nine tracks, describes a journey through a future starting from the birth of a new technological era, addressing humanity's gradual loss of control to machines and disorder (entropy), only to culminate in the final, inevitable collapse. Every track explores a different facet of this dystopian vision, beginning with “Genesis”. Here, Rigoni's bass establishes the foundation groove while Manring and Hamm weave the first melodic threads. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation, curiosity, and an unspoiled beauty.
The artificial element is no longer just a tool, but begins to resonate everywhere in “Echoes Of The Machine”, where stiffer, more cadenced rhythms alternate with tapping interventions and distorted metallic bass sounds that simulate the pulsing of silicon and gears. Upon listening, hints of Brand X come to mind. “The Algorithm” represents the invisible yet total control of mathematical formulas over human life. Musically, this translates into precise metric interlocking built upon a structure calculated to the millimeter.
Then comes “Entropia”, where the beginning brings certain King Crimson moments to mind. Here, Manring's fretless bass utilizes glissandos and tonal shifts to evoke the feeling of a world slipping away from human control, where disorder increases inexorably. And it is with “Limbo” that humanity finds itself stuck in a state of stasis, suspended between the old world that no longer exists and an uncertain future. It is a track with sparser atmospheres, where the use of harmonics and reverbs creates an ethereal, melancholy, and almost weightless sonic space.
And here is the surprise: the arrival of Tim Alexander (drummer for Primus) delivers a devastating surge of energy to the album. “Born from the Ashes” marks the dramatic turning point, because after the limbo, there is an attempt at rebellion. Alexander's unmistakable drumming—polyrhythmic and powerful—drives the three bassists to bring out their absolute best.
“Solar” brings a blinding ray of light as the frequencies rise, allowing the melody to become more open and expansive. It represents a sweeping view of the planet, fleeting yet intense, before the final reckoning.
“Ethereal Horizon” serves as a final interlude leading into the nearly nine minutes of “Dystopia”, where the music closes on imposing yet somber notes, leaving the listener with the definitive sense of a future where darkness has prevailed.
In conclusion, “Dystopia” is a cosmic and dark journey that elevates the bass to the ultimate narrative instrument. A great work of coordination, technique, and atmosphere to be thoroughly enjoyed! MS
