La Polonia ha sempre dimostrato di essere un'attenta ascoltatrice di Neo Prog, non a caso gruppi storici come Pendragon e molti altri hanno sempre realizzato live in questi territori, usufruendo di un nutrito pubblico di fan. Ma non sono soltanto passivi ascoltatori, basti pensare a band come Collage, Millenium, Satellite, Quidam, Riverside, Abraxas e Believe, tutte dotate di uno spiccato gusto per la melodia, oltre che di una tecnica strumentale mai fine a se stessa.
Un'altra realtà radicata nel tempo è quella di Kamil Konieczniak, polistrumentista già attivo con i Millenium, qui sotto il nome di Moonrise.
I Moonrise nascono nel 2008 a Trzebinia e, dopo il debutto acclamato con l'album “The Light Of The Moon” (2008), Konieczniak pubblica altri tre album di buona fattura atmosferica e melodica. Quello che ho sempre apprezzato di questo artista è la capacità di apportare nella propria musica un perfetto equilibrio fra passato e presente, rispettando gli insegnamenti di band come Pink Floyd, Camel e Genesis e controbilanciandoli con la propria visione, fatta di suoni moderni oggi cari a gruppi come Riverside o Steven Wilson, oltre che al classico Neo Prog anni ’80.
Per questo nuovo album intitolato “No Rewind”, l’artista beneficia della carismatica voce di Anna Batko (Hipgnosis, Albion e tRKproject), del cantante Marcin Staszek e della chitarra di Marcin Kruczek, autore di un bellissimo assolo nel brano “Friends Of Blood”.
In tutte le canzoni le atmosfere sono rilassate, per poi lanciarsi in crescendo emotivi di facile presa. Il titolo dell'album, “No Rewind” (“Senza possibilità di riavvolgere”), chiarisce il filo conduttore dell'opera affrontando la consapevolezza che il tempo scorre in una sola direzione, spingendo l'essere umano a fare i conti con scelte, errori, relazioni passate e con la ricerca di un senso nel presente.
“Two Roads” apre l’album con una progressione di tastiere atmosferiche che introducono un riff di chitarra elettrica pulito ed espressivo. Il ritmo è moderato ma incalzante, sorretto da una sezione ritmica solida che valorizza il timbro caldo di Anna Batko. L’apice lo si raggiunge nel solo di chitarra, che resta in perfetto equilibrio fra Pink Floyd e Porcupine Tree. Le due strade rappresentano le decisioni che definiscono il nostro futuro, il testo riflette sulla paura di sbagliare percorso e sulla rassegnazione nel capire che ogni scelta comporta una rinuncia irreversibile.
Siamo sempre in campo Progressive Rock, per cui non mancano le suite (o mini suite) come nel caso di “Shadows In The Dark”, apprezzabile anche per un ascoltatore di Metal Prog pur non contenendo chitarre distorte, ma ritmiche spezzate e decise. Molto bello il ritornello! Il brano affronta le paure inconsce e i dubbi che riaffiorano nei momenti di solitudine. Chiaramente esistono frangenti vicini anche al mondo dei Marillion e dei già citati Pendragon, il tutto amplificato dalla propria personale visione della musica e “Single Game” è qui a dimostrarlo. Il gioco solitario è la metafora di chi affronta la vita e i rapporti personali con egoismo, rifiutando la condivisione per paura di mettersi a nudo.
Effetti elettronici entrano a supporto di “Cheaters”, mostrandoci una visione maggiormente futuristica della musica dei Moonrise, un po' come hanno saputo fare ultimamente i connazionali Riverside. A seguire c'è “When We Played By Heart”, una ballad riflessiva ed emozionante. La strumentazione è essenziale nei primi minuti, per poi arricchirsi gradualmente con l'ingresso di un assolo di chitarra dal forte impatto emotivo, come solo questa musica sa fare. Il testo narra di un'incursione nella nostalgia dell'infanzia e della giovinezza, quando le decisioni si prendevano col cuore e non formate o filtrate dalla razionalità e dalla disillusione adulta. Dopo la breve e toccante traccia strumentale “Silent Rooms”, è la volta di “Friends Of Blood”, gemma sonora ricca di tutto quanto detto sino ad ora. Il concetto dei fratelli di sangue viene sviscerato attraverso l'esplorazione dei legami indissolubili, della lealtà e delle ferite condivise nel corso degli anni.
Chiude la suite “All About You”, una vera e propria traccia faro del Neo Prog polacco. La conclusione poetica lascia aperta una porta verso la speranza e la consapevolezza del proprio vissuto.
Per concludere, “No Rewind” rimane uno dei punti più alti della produzione di Kamil Konieczniak, un lavoro altamente raffinato e vivamente consigliato! MS

Poland has always proven to be an attentive audience for Neo-Prog; it is no coincidence that historic bands like Pendragon and many others have frequently performed live in these territories, enjoying a sizable fan base. However, they are not merely passive listeners: just think of bands such as Collage, Millenium, Satellite, Quidam, Riverside, Abraxas, and Believe, all endowed with a striking flair for melody as well as instrumental technique that is never an end in itself.
Another long-standing fixture on the scene is Kamil Konieczniak, a multi-instrumentalist previously active with Millenium, performing here under the name Moonrise.
Moonrise was formed in 2008 in Trzebinia, and following their acclaimed debut album “The Light Of The Moon” (2008), Konieczniak released three more albums of solid atmospheric and melodic craftsmanship. What I have always appreciated about this artist is his ability to bring a perfect balance between past and present to his music, respecting the lessons of bands like Pink Floyd, Camel, and Genesis while counterbalancing them with his own vision—crafted from modern sounds reminiscent of contemporary acts like Riverside or Steven Wilson, alongside classic '80s Neo-Prog.
For this new album entitled “No Rewind”, the artist benefits from the charismatic vocals of Anna Batko (Hipgnosis, Albion, and tRKproject), singer Marcin Staszek, and the guitar work of Marcin Kruczek, who contributes a beautiful solo on the track “Friends Of Blood”.
Across all the songs, the atmospheres remain relaxed before launching into easily engaging emotional crescendos. The title of the album, “No Rewind”, clarifies the work's central theme, confronting the realization that time flows in only one direction, urging human beings to reckon with choices, mistakes, past relationships, and the search for meaning in the present.
“Two Roads” opens the album with a progression of atmospheric keyboards that introduce a clean, expressive electric guitar riff. The rhythm is moderate yet driving, supported by a solid rhythm section that enhances Anna Batko's warm vocal timbre. The climax is reached in the guitar solo, which strikes a fine balance between Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree. The two roads represent the decisions that define our future; the lyrics reflect on the fear of taking the wrong path and the resignation of understanding that every choice carries an irreversible compromise.
We remain firmly in Progressive Rock territory, so there is no shortage of suites (or mini-suites), as in the case of “Shadows In The Dark”—a track that even Progressive Metal listeners can appreciate, despite lacking distorted guitars, thanks to its sharp, syncopated rhythms. The chorus is wonderful!
The song addresses subconscious fears and the doubts that resurface in moments of solitude. Naturally, there are passages close to the sonic world of Marillion and the aforementioned Pendragon, but everything is elevated by his personal musical vision, and “Single Game” is here to prove it. The "solitary game" serves as a metaphor for those who approach life and personal relationships with selfishness, rejecting shared intimacy out of fear of exposing themselves.
Electronic effects step in to support “Cheaters”, showcasing a more futuristic vision for Moonrise's music—much like their compatriots Riverside have done recently. Up next is “When We Played By Heart”, a reflective and moving ballad. The instrumentation remains minimal in the first few minutes before gradually building up with the entrance of a deeply emotional guitar solo, as only this genre can deliver. The lyrics tell of a journey into the nostalgia of childhood and youth, when decisions were made from the heart, unfiltered by adult rationality or disillusionment. After the brief and touching instrumental track “Silent Rooms”, comes “Friends Of Blood”, a sonic gem packed with everything discussed so far. The concept of blood brothers is explored through the lens of unbreakable bonds, loyalty, and wounds shared over the years.
Closing the album is the suite “All About You”, a true flagship track of Polish Neo-Prog. Its poetic conclusion leaves a door open to hope and the conscious acceptance of one's lived experience.
In conclusion, “No Rewind” stands as one of the highest points in Kamil Konieczniak's catalog—a highly refined effort and warmly recommended! MS
