E’ con estremo piacere che vado ad ascoltare il nuovo album “Oro” della band svedese Khadavra, dopo aver apprezzato soprattutto quello di cinque anni fa “Hologram”.
Per chi non li conoscesse, si sono formati nel 2012 nella cittadina svedese di Arvika, e si mettono in luce nel panorama underground grazie a un sound ipnotico e dilatato. Il debutto del 2014 con “A True Image Of The Infinite Mind” definisce la loro impronta Progressive Psichedelica. Con “Hypnagogia” (2019) affinano il lato più sognante e claustrofobico, mentre con “Hologram” incorporano strutture Post Punk e trame chitarristiche tipiche del Shoegaze Prog Gaze (questo per chi ama i termini musicali). Il gruppo stesso descrive la propria musica come "rubare suoni da una dimensione superiore", attingendo al subconscio e traducendo in musica esperienze ordinarie e stati alterati di coscienza, non a caso siamo nel campo Psichedelico.
“Oro” si compone di 9 brani che alternano suite dilatate e ipnotiche a pezzi più diretti ed energetici, andiamo quindi ad analizzare i brani:
Il disco si apre con una mini suite di 10 minuti intitolata “Amanita”, il titolo richiama ovviamente il celebre fungo allucinogeno (Amanita muscaria). Il contesto sonoro, di conseguenza, evoca un viaggio lisergico di trasformazione spirituale, l'esplorazione del limite tra lucidità e visione, e la resa di fronte ai misteri della natura. Atmosfere rarefatte e magnetiche si sviluppano in un crescendo di chitarre Psichedeliche attraverso ritmiche incalzanti. Lo stato mentale è quindi ben definito.
A seguire “Ruin”, pezzo elettrico ammorbidito sporadicamente dagli interventi del flauto, mentre il cantato in lingua madre esplora  il concetto di rovina, sia fisica che interiore, una riflessione sul collasso delle strutture sociali e sulla consapevolezza di ciò che resta quando tutto il resto viene smantellato.
“Begynnelser” è vorticoso e d'impatto caratterizzato da tessiture Shoegaze, in questo contesto la band si diverte e sa divertire . Il brano più lungo e complesso dell’album grazie ai suoi 11 minuti è “Monument”, una vera e propria cavalcata Prog con improvvisazioni Space Rock, riff pesanti e cambi di tempo complessi. Qui Il "monumento" rappresenta la memoria collettiva, l'orgoglio e il peso delle eredità culturali.
Dopo questo bagno di energia pura, si prosegue con “Psykpsalm”, un incontro tra salmo religioso e sonorità oscure, sorretto da organo, tastiere atmosferiche e una ritmica marziale. Il testo affronta le fragilità mentali, il dialogo interiore con i propri demoni e la ricerca di una catarsi spirituale attraverso il suono.
A questo punto si tira un attimo il fiato attraverso la breve “Kniven”, movimento strumentale carico di tensione ed effetto distorsivo che conduce a “Vita Algen”, basato su progressioni armoniche dal sapore nordico e Folk Psichedelico, con un finale aperto altamente estatico.
“Bergtäkt” ha un sentore anni ’70 decisamente marcato, ed è immerso in un mid tempo sovrastato dagli arpeggi delle chitarre elettriche effettate con eco. Sono andato a sbirciare e ho visto che il termine svedese “Bergtäkt” si riferisce alle antiche leggende in cui gli esseri umani venivano rapiti dagli spiriti delle montagne: i Troll.
Il capitolo finale “Bergtakt”, gioca sul doppio senso linguistico nei confronti del brano precedente e si sviluppa come una lunga jam ipnotica e cosmica che dissolve l'album in un mare di feedback e riverberi. Qui risiede l'integrazione dell'uomo con la roccia e la terra, il ritorno all'essenziale e la quiete dopo il viaggio lisergico e psicologico compiuto lungo tutto il disco.
“Oro” quindi è un album denso, visionario e privo di orpelli inutili, capace di far convivere con disinvoltura l'ipnosi dello Space Rock con la potenza del Prog Gaze. Un'opera che richiede tempo e ascolti attenti, ma che ripaga con la rara bellezza delle cose autentiche. MS

It is with extreme pleasure that I listen to the new album “Oro” by the Swedish band Khadavra, having especially appreciated their release from five years ago, “Hologram”.
For those who might not know them, they formed in 2012 in the Swedish town of Arvika, coming to prominence in the underground scene thanks to a hypnotic and expanded sound. Their 2014 debut with “A True Image Of The Infinite Mind” defined their Psychedelic Progressive imprint. With “Hypnagogia” (2019) they refined their more dreamy and claustrophobic side, while with “Hologram” they incorporated Post-Punk structures and guitar textures typical of Shoegaze Prog Gaze (for those who love musical terminology). The group itself describes its music as "stealing sounds from a higher dimension", drawing from the subconscious and translating ordinary experiences and altered states of consciousness into music—unsurprisingly, as we are in Psychedelic territory.
“Oro” consists of 9 tracks that alternate expanded, hypnotic suites with more direct, energetic pieces. Let us now analyze the tracks:
The record opens with a 10-minute mini-suite titled “Amanita”; the title obviously recalls the famous hallucinogenic mushroom (Amanita muscaria). Consequently, the sonic context evokes a lysergic journey of spiritual transformation, the exploration of the boundary between lucidity and vision, and the surrender before the mysteries of nature. Rarefied, magnetic atmospheres develop into a crescendo of Psychedelic guitars through pressing rhythms. The mental state is thus clearly defined.
Next up is “Ruin”, an electric track sporadically softened by flute interventions, while the native-tongue vocals explore the concept of ruin—both physical and internal—a reflection on the collapse of social structures and the awareness of what remains when everything else is dismantled.
“Begynnelser” is swirling and impactful, characterized by Shoegaze textures; in this context, the band enjoys itself and knows how to entertain. The longest and most complex track on the album, coming in at 11 minutes, is “Monument”—a genuine Prog gallop featuring Space Rock improvisations, heavy riffs, and complex time signature changes. Here, the "monument" represents collective memory, pride, and the weight of cultural legacies.
After this bath of pure energy, the journey continues with “Psykpsalm”, a cross between a religious psalm and dark soundscapes, supported by organ, atmospheric keyboards, and a martial rhythm. The lyrics address mental fragilities, the inner dialogue with one's own demons, and the search for a spiritual catharsis through sound.
At this point, we catch our breath for a moment through the brief “Kniven”, an instrumental movement loaded with tension and distortion effects that leads into “Vita Algen”, based on harmonic progressions with a Nordic, Folk Psychedelic flavor and a highly ecstatic open ending.
“Bergtäkt” has a distinctly marked ’70s feel and is immersed in a mid-tempo dominated by echo-effected electric guitar arpeggios. I took a peek and saw that the Swedish term “Bergtäkt” refers to ancient legends in which human beings were abducted by mountain spirits: Trolls.
The final chapter, “Bergtakt”, plays on a linguistic double entendre with the preceding track, unfolding as a long, hypnotic, cosmic jam that dissolves the album into a sea of feedback and reverb. Here lies the integration of man with rock and earth, the return to the essential, and the quiet following the lysergic and psychological journey undertaken throughout the entire record.
“Oro” is therefore a dense, visionary album free of useless embellishments, capable of effortlessly pairing the hypnosis of Space Rock with the power of Prog Gaze. A work that demands time and attentive listening, but rewards the listener with the rare beauty of authentic things. MS
