Gli svedesi Agusa sono divenuti in ambito Psychedelic, Space Rock una vera e propria istituzione.
Sono celebri per la loro attitudine da jam band, le loro composizioni in studio prendono vita sul palco espandendosi con dinamiche organiche, crescendo psichedelici e improvvisazioni d'insieme. Sebbene la band utilizzi brevi ricami vocali o cori d'atmosfera, la narrazione è prevalentemente strumentale, con le melodie guida di flauto e organo che sostituiscono la parola cantata tradizionale per evocare immagini di natura, folklore nordico e paesaggi cosmici.
La band nasce all'inizio del 2013 nei pressi di Malmö, quando il chitarrista Mikael Ödesjö, il bassista Tobias Pettersson, il tastierista Jonas Berge e il batterista Dag Strömqvist si ritrovarono a suonare in una casa di campagna nella piccola località svedese di Agusa, da cui presero il nome.
Dopo il debutto con l'album “Högtid” (2014), la formazione accoglie la flautista Jenny Puertas e il batterista Tim Wallander. Il flauto traverso quindi è diventato uno degli elementi distintivi del loro sound pastorale e sognante. La loro musica affonda le radici nel Prog e Folk Rock scandinavo degli anni '70 (come Kebnekajse e Bo Hansson), con forti incursioni nel Krautrock tedesco (Amon Düül II), nello Space Rock e nel Jazz fusion.
La panacea è storicamente il rimedio universale per tutti i mali, e questo album si propone esattamente come una cura catartica attraverso la musica. Nell’album tre suite, ad iniziare da “Lust Och Fägring (Sommarvisan)”, traducibile come "Desiderio e Bellezza (Canzone d'Estate)". Il titolo si rifà ai versi tradizionali della celebrazione estiva svedese (Den blomstertid nu kommer) e all'immaginario bucolico scandinavo. All’ascolto sembra di ritrovarsi all’interno di questo contesto. Il brano si apre con un'atmosfera soffusa e pastorale. Il flauto di Jenny Puertas intesse una melodia calda e Folk, accompagnata dai tappeti vintage dell'organo Hammond. Nella versione dal vivo, il pezzo si sviluppa con un ritmo progressivo e avvolgente: la chitarra di Ödesjö dialoga costantemente con la sezione ritmica, creando un contrasto tra la dolcezza bucolica iniziale e una seconda parte più Rock ed energica. Sin da subito si evince la grande intesa fra i componenti e l’ottima capacità di comporre melodie altamente orecchiabili.
Con oltre venti minuti di musica, “Den Förtrollade Skogen” è il pezzo più lungo del lotto e significa "La Foresta Incantata". È un racconto fiabesco che trascina l'ascoltatore nuovamente in un viaggio esplorativo tra leggende nordiche, luci e ombre del bosco. Possiamo dire che è il centro nevralgico dell'album ed offre spazio a jam prolungate oltre che ad evoluzioni psichedeliche. L'incipit richiama atmosfere mistiche ed eteree, per poi trasformarsi in una cavalcata Progressive che cita l'ardore di band come Traffic e Santana. La batteria e il basso offrono un groove solido e tribale, mentre flauto e chitarra si alternano in assoli fiammeggianti d'ispirazione primordiale.
La chiusura spetta a “Ur Askan” (dalle ceneri), Un brano più tirato, denso e viscerale. Inizia con note malinconiche per poi esplodere in un crescendo trionfante. L'interazione tra l'organo di Roman Andrén e la chitarra mostra il lato più cupo e Hard Prog della band, prima di sciogliersi in un finale liberatorio acclamato dal pubblico.
Che siate nostalgici del Progressive Rock anni '70 alla Camel e Bo Hansson, o semplicemente alla ricerca di un viaggio sonoro capace di isolarvi dal rumore del mondo moderno, questo album dal vivo mantiene esattamente ciò che il suo titolo promette, è una vera e propria cura per l'anima, un'immersione rigenerante in una foresta incantata di note di cui è impossibile non innamorarsi. Un ascolto imprescindibile per ogni amante della musica d'atmosfera. MS

The Swedish band Agusa has become a true institution in the Psychedelic and Space Rock scene.
They are famous for their jam band attitude; their studio compositions come alive on stage, expanding with organic dynamics, psychedelic crescendos, and ensemble improvisations. Although the band uses brief vocal embellishments or atmospheric backing vocals, the narrative is predominantly instrumental, with the lead melodies of the flute and organ replacing traditional sung lyrics to evoke images of nature, Nordic folklore, and cosmic landscapes.
The band was formed in early 2013 near Malmö, when guitarist Mikael Ödesjö, bassist Tobias Pettersson, keyboardist Jonas Berge, and drummer Dag Strömqvist met to play in a country house in the small Swedish village of Agusa, from which they took their name.
After debuting with the album “Högtid” (2014), the lineup welcomed flutist Jenny Puertas and drummer Tim Wallander. The concert flute thus became one of the defining elements of their pastoral, dreamy sound. Their music is deeply rooted in '70s Scandinavian Prog and Folk Rock (such as Kebnekajse and Bo Hansson), with strong influences from German Krautrock (Amon Düül II), Space Rock, and Jazz fusion.
Panacea is historically the universal remedy for all ills, and this album sets out to be precisely a cathartic cure through music. The album features three suites, starting with “Lust Och Fägring (Sommarvisan)”, which translates to "Desire and Beauty (Summer Song)". The title refers to the traditional verses of Swedish summer celebrations (Den blomstertid nu kommer) and Scandinavian bucolic imagery. Listening to it feels like being transported directly into this atmosphere. The track opens with a soft, pastoral feel. Jenny Puertas's flute weaves a warm, Folk melody, accompanied by the vintage soundscapes of the Hammond organ. In the live version, the piece unfolds with an enveloping, progressive rhythm: Ödesjö's guitar engages in a constant dialogue with the rhythm section, creating a contrast between the initial bucolic sweetness and a more energetic, Rock-driven second half. Right from the start, the great chemistry among the members and their remarkable ability to compose highly catchy melodies are clearly evident.
At over twenty minutes long, “Den Förtrollade Skogen” is the longest track of the set, meaning "The Enchanted Forest". It is a fairytale story that drags the listener once again into an exploratory journey through Nordic legends and the light and shadow of the woods. We can say it is the nerve center of the album, offering room for extended jams as well as psychedelic evolutions. The opening recalls mystical, ethereal atmospheres before transforming into a Progressive ride that echoes the fervor of bands like Traffic and Santana. The drums and bass provide a solid, tribal groove, while flute and guitar take turns in fiery, organically inspired solos.
The closing track is “Ur Askan” (from the ashes), a tighter, dense, and visceral piece. It begins with melancholy notes before exploding into a triumphant crescendo. The interplay between Roman Andrén's organ and the guitar showcases the band's darker, Hard Prog side, before dissolving into a liberating finale acclaimed by the audience.
Whether you are nostalgic for '70s Progressive Rock in the vein of Camel and Bo Hansson, or simply searching for a sonic journey capable of isolating you from the noise of the modern world, this live album delivers exactly what its title promises: it is a true cure for the soul, a regenerating immersion into an enchanted forest of notes that is impossible not to fall in love with.
