ARTHUR - Where We Lay Our Scene

Sempre più esordi nell’ambito Progressive Rock (e non soltanto) si autoproducono sul portale Bandcamp, oramai divenuto un punto di riferimento per molti appassionati di questo genere di musica. Sono i tempi moderni dove il supporto fisico va sempre calando, salvo qualche sporadico e accanito appassionato che ancora ama collezionare dischi. I dati tendono a raccontare che oggi la gente compera molti vinili e CD, alternando cifre più o meno credibili, ma è divenuto impossibile credere effettivamente a cosa si legge nel web, per cui vi consiglio di prendere tutto ciò con il beneficio dell’inventario.
Quello che invece è realtà è il numero delle band italiane che nascono sotto la bandiera della musica dei tempi che furono, seppur apportando del proprio attraverso la personalità , tanto da far divenire il termine Progressive Rock difficile da comprendere. Se siete più curiosi, al riguardo ho scritto il libro “Post Prog Moderno” edito da Arcana.
Una nuova band nel contesto proviene da Biella e si chiama Arthur. Nascono  nel 2018, e sono formati dall'incontro di tre musicisti nell'orbita della scuola di musica Dyapason:  Elia Guidetti (chitarra, sintetizzatori, narrazione), Simone Bongiovanni (basso, tastiere, sintetizzatori, narrazione), e Simone Guidetti (batteria, percussioni, narrazione). Uniti da una profonda passione per il Rock Progressivo, il Rock Psichedelico e la musica per immagini, gli Arthur attingono alla lezione dei grandi maestri del genere passando attraverso le trame articolate dei Rush e dei King Crimson all'impianto melodico degli Yes, rielaborando il tutto con una sensibilità compositiva fresca e moderna. “Where We Lay Our Scene” è un concept album completamente strumentale ispirato dal celebre Prologo shakespeariano di Romeo e Giulietta ("In fair Verona, where we lay our scene...").
Come ogni album a tema, inizia con il classico “Overture” anticipato dall’intro “The Curtain Falls”. L’impatto drammatico introduce i temi ricorrenti dell'album con la chitarra dialogante attraverso una sezione ritmica solida e dinamica, alternando aperture sinfoniche e accelerazioni Progressive. Segue un altro breve intro dal titolo “Announcement” che simula il bando di corte o la chiamata alle armi prima del grande evento “Gran Galà”,  pezzo vivo ed eclettico dove il Rock è assoluto protagonista. Il basso di Bongiovanni ricama linee melodiche portanti, sostenuto da continui cambi di tempo della batteria. Segue “Fuga In E Strano”, qui il ritmo diventa maggiormente serrato, mentre il titolo ironico gioca sul doppio senso tra la forma contrappuntistica classica (la fuga) e l'azione del fuggire, costruita attorno alla tonalità di Mi (E). Ricca di incastri metrici serrati e arpeggi obliqui di chitarra. E’ un momento di rottura, una fuga concitata o un inseguimento labirintico attraverso territori sconosciuti.
Altra traccia breve è “Bonfire Lit”, che conduce a “            Notte: Riposo Al Chiaro Di Luna (Pt 1)”, un momento di sospensione, riposo e meditazione attorno al fuoco prima della battaglia finale. “Notte: La Bestia, Pt. 2” è un cambio di registro che si sviluppa su riff pesanti, tempi dispari e sonorità cupe vicine al Progressive Metal e al Rock Psichedelico più acido. Qui il risveglio della minaccia e lo scontro diretto con l'elemento oscuro ("La Bestia") nel cuore della notte. La chiusura spetta ad una mini suite di dieci minuti intitolata “Arthur Last Stand: i. Epilogue, ii. The Battlefield, iii. Suspence and Memories, iv Induction”. Divisa in quattro sezioni distinte, mostra la maturità compositiva del trio tra esplosioni Hard Prog, riprese di temi precedenti e un articolato finale sinfonico. Esso narra la battaglia finale, i ricordi del passato che affiorano durante il combattimento ("Suspence And Memories") e il tragico ed eroico compimento del destino del protagonista ("Last Stand").
“Where We Lay Our Scene” si rivela quindi un esordio coraggioso e fresco, in cui gli Arthur dimostrano che non servono le parole per raccontare una grande storia. Con una spiccata maturità nell'intrecciare trame strumentali eleganti e strappi Hard Prog, il trio biellese firma una prova solida e priva di fronzoli, confermando come la scena indipendente italiana sappia ancora sfornare realtà capaci di guardare alla tradizione con occhi moderni. Un nome da tenere assolutamente d'occhio. MS

More and more debuts in the Progressive Rock sphere (and beyond) are self-released on the Bandcamp platform, which has now become a point of reference for many fans of this music genre. These are modern times where physical formats are constantly decreasing, except for a few sporadic and die-hard enthusiasts who still love collecting records. The data tends to suggest that today people buy a lot of vinyls and CDs, alternating more or less credible figures, but it has become impossible to actually believe what one reads on the web, so I advise you to take all of this with a pinch of salt.
What is real, however, is the number of Italian bands born under the flag of the music of bygone times, even while bringing something of their own through their personality, so much so that the term Progressive Rock has become difficult to define. If you are curious, on this subject I wrote the book "Post Prog Moderno" published by Arcana.
A new band in this context comes from Biella and is called Arthur. Formed in 2018, they were born from the meeting of three musicians within the orbit of the Dyapason music school: Elia Guidetti (guitar, synthesizers, narration), Simone Bongiovanni (bass, keyboards, synthesizers, narration), and Simone Guidetti (drums, percussion, narration). United by a deep passion for Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock, and music for images, Arthur draw from the lesson of the great masters of the genre, moving from the intricate textures of Rush and King Crimson to the melodic structure of Yes, reworking it all with a fresh and modern compositional sensibility. “Where We Lay Our Scene” is a completely instrumental concept album inspired by the famous Shakespearean Prologue to Romeo and Juliet ("In fair Verona, where we lay our scene...").
Like any themed album, it starts with the classic “Overture” preceded by the intro “The Curtain Falls”. The dramatic impact introduces the album's recurring themes, with the guitar dialoguing through a solid and dynamic rhythm section, alternating symphonic openings and Progressive accelerations. Next comes another short intro entitled “Announcement”, simulating the court proclamation or the call to arms before the big event “Gran Galà”, a lively and eclectic track where Rock is the absolute protagonist. Bongiovanni's bass weaves main melodic lines, supported by the drums' continuous time changes. Followed by “Fuga In E Strano”, here the rhythm becomes tighter, while the ironic title plays on the double meaning between the classical contrapuntal form (the fugue) and the action of fleeing, built around the key of E. Rich in tight metric interlockings and oblique guitar arpeggios, it represents a moment of disruption, a rushed escape, or a labyrinthine pursuit through unknown territories.
Another short track is “Bonfire Lit”, leading to “Notte: Riposo Al Chiaro Di Luna (Pt 1)”, a moment of suspension, rest, and meditation around the fire before the final battle. “Notte: La Bestia, Pt. 2” is a change of pace that develops over heavy riffs, odd time signatures, and dark sounds close to Progressive Metal and more acidic Psychedelic Rock, portraying the awakening of the threat and the direct clash with the dark element ("La Bestia") in the heart of the night. The closing is entrusted to a ten-minute mini-suite titled “Arthur Last Stand: i. Epilogue, ii. The Battlefield, iii. Suspence and Memories, iv Induction”. Divided into four distinct sections, it shows the compositional maturity of the trio between Hard Prog explosions, reprises of previous themes, and an articulated symphonic finale. It narrates the final battle, the memories of the past that surface during combat ("Suspence And Memories"), and the tragic and heroic fulfillment of the protagonist's destiny ("Last Stand").
“Where We Lay Our Scene” turns out to be a courageous and fresh debut, in which Arthur prove that words are not needed to tell a great story. With a remarkable maturity in weaving elegant instrumental textures and Hard Prog bursts, the Biella trio delivers a solid, no-nonsense effort, confirming how the Italian independent scene can still produce acts capable of looking at tradition with modern eyes.
