E’ sempre appagante imbattersi con band che ancora oggi fanno musica con intelligenza, sto parlando dei storici maltesi Different Light.
Si formano verso la fine degli anni '90 su iniziativa del tastierista, cantante e compositore Trevor Tabone. Fin dagli esordi con l'album “All Modern Conveniences” (2000), il progetto ha evidenziato una forte vocazione per un Rock Progressivo elegante, figlio della tradizione britannica che varia dalle melodie trascinanti dei Marillion e dei IQ fino alle complessità strutturali di Spock's Beard e Porcupine Tree. Negli anni successivi la band ha attraversato vari cambi di formazione e un trasferimento operativo nella Repubblica Ceca (Praga), fattore che ha rigenerato il gruppo fornendo nuova linfa creativa. Con l'ingresso di musicisti del calibro del chitarrista David Bárta e del bassista Petr "Biava" Jirásko, la band trova così una straordinaria coesione tecnica. La discografia, che consiglio di andare a reperire, è formata da quattro album, dove “Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality)” è il quinto sigillo da studio.
“Binary Suns (part 2)” rappresenta il naturale ed attesissimo completamento del dittico concettuale avviato nel 2020 con la prima parte. Con “Binary Suns (part 1)” la band aveva fissato standard elevatissimi di Neo Prog moderno, ricco di contrappunti melodici, passaggi sinfonici e liriche introspettive, questa seconda parte spinge ancora più oltre la frammentazione strutturale e la tensione emotiva, organizzandosi attorno a vere e proprie suite a tracce iper-articolate.
Per farvi rendere conto della complessità dell’opera vi pongo i brani e la durata:  “Mindspeaker” (20:41), “The Syncretist” (12:30), “A Fool's Errand” (7:12), “Constant Silver Lining” (10:53), “The Stalker Talks” (10:10) e “Last Call” (3:13).
La prima lunga suite “Mindspeaker”  affronta il tema della comunicazione interiore, dell'illusione e della trappola della psiche, il tutto sopra un percorso noto e caro a tutti gli amanti del Neo Prog che spazia dalle innumerevoli tastiere ai numerosi cambi umorali. Il titolo cita il famoso e nefasto sciroppo ottocentesco a base di morfina per bambini. È una metafora delle soluzioni facili e tossiche offerte dalla società per sedare il dolore emotivo. L’andamento iniziale è cadenzato in stile Beatles per poi variare in una melodia tastieristica delicata e ben eseguita dalla voce di Trevor Tabone. Molti Spock’s Beard e cavalcate sonore Genesiane a seguito. Infine la morale del brano è che nonostante il dolore, il lavoro di comprensione di sé stessi resta l'unica reale fatica fatta per amore.
La seconda suite “The Syncretist”  si apre con le immancabili tastiere synth e chitarre a seguito, immergendo l’ascoltatore negli anni ’90, quando il Neo Prog rialza la testa con band come Arena, Shadowland ed altre ancora. Qui una dura critica all'omologazione e a come le ideologie o i social privino l'individuo della propria anima originale. La chiusura è melodica e intima, un augurio sommesso e malinconico di sopravvivenza legata all’equilibrio interiore.
“A Fool's Errand” è movimentata e più solare rispetto a quanto ascoltato sino ad ora, avvicinandosi addirittura all’AOR con un bellissimo solo di chitarra elettrica.
La terza suite “Constant Silver Lining” è un'ironica riflessione sul mito moderno del vivere il proprio sogno, che spesso si rivela solo una routine patinata. Solenne l’inizio che apre la strada ad ogni ben di Dio che si può apprezzare nel Neo Prog articolato. La forza dei Different Light risiede proprio nelle belle melodie facili da ricordare e cantare assieme a loro, un fattore da non sottovalutare!
“The Stalker Talks” è un'altra gemma sonora raffinata e ben arrangiata, mentre la chiusura spetta ai tre minuti di “Last Call”, un'elegante traccia di chiusura, intima ed essenziale, guidata dal pianoforte e da una chitarra delicatissima che si spegne gradualmente. E’ “L'ultima chiamata”, il congedo dal concept album, una presa di coscienza finale e un invito a riagganciare con il mondo illusorio per tornare alla realtà.
“Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality)” nel mio taccuino di viaggio, si candida a essere una delle uscite Neo Prog più intelligenti, coese e suggestive degli ultimi tempi. Un lavoro imprescindibile per chiunque consideri il Progressive Rock non come un esercizio di stile nostalgico, ma come una lente d'ingrandimento per esplorare le complessità dell'animo umano. It is always rewarding to come across bands that still make music with intelligence today, and I am speaking of the historical Maltese band Different Light.
They formed towards the end of the 90s on the initiative of keyboardist, singer, and composer Trevor Tabone. Ever since their debut with the album “All Modern Conveniences” (2000), the project highlighted a strong calling for an elegant Progressive Rock, a child of the British tradition ranging from the sweeping melodies of Marillion and IQ to the structural complexities of Spock's Beard and Porcupine Tree. In subsequent years the band went through various line-up changes and an operational relocation to the Czech Republic (Prague), a factor that regenerated the group by providing new creative fuel. With the entry of musicians of the caliber of guitarist David Bárta and bassist Petr "Biava" Jirásko, the band thus found extraordinary technical cohesion. Their discography, which I recommend checking out, consists of four albums, with “Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality)” standing as their fifth studio effort.
“Binary Suns (part 2)” represents the natural and highly anticipated completion of the conceptual diptych initiated in 2020 with the first part. While with “Binary Suns (part 1)” the band had set exceptionally high standards of modern Neo Prog, rich in melodic counterpoints, symphonic passages, and introspective lyrics, this second part pushes structural fragmentation and emotional tension even further, organizing itself around true hyper-articulated multi-track suites.
To give you an idea of the complexity of the work, here are the tracks and their durations: “Mindspeaker” (20:41), “The Syncretist” (12:30), “A Fool's Errand” (7:12), “Constant Silver Lining” (10:53), “The Stalker Talks” (10:10), and “Last Call” (3:13).
The first long suite, “Mindspeaker”, addresses the theme of inner communication, illusion, and the trap of the psyche, all set over a path well-known and dear to all Neo Prog lovers, ranging from countless keyboards to numerous shifts in mood. The title cites the famous and ill-fated nineteenth-century morphine-based syrup for children. It is a metaphor for the easy, toxic solutions offered by society to dull emotional pain. The initial momentum is cadenced in a Beatles-like style, only to transition into a delicate keyboard melody well-executed by Trevor Tabone's vocals. Plenty of Spock’s Beard and Genesis-esque sonic rides follow. Ultimately, the moral of the track is that despite the pain, the work of understanding oneself remains the only true labor of love.
The second suite, “The Syncretist”, opens with the inevitable synth keyboards followed by guitars, immersing the listener in the 90s, when Neo Prog raised its head with bands like Arena, Shadowland, and others. Here lies a harsh critique of conformity and how ideologies or social media rob the individual of their original soul. The closing is melodic and intimate, a subdued and melancholic wish for survival tied to inner balance.
“A Fool's Errand” is lively and brighter compared to what has been heard so far, even approaching AOR with a beautiful electric guitar solo.
The third suite, “Constant Silver Lining”, is an ironic reflection on the modern myth of living one's dream, which often turns out to be merely a polished routine. The solemn beginning opens the way to every blessing one can appreciate in articulated Neo Prog. Different Light's strength lies precisely in their beautiful melodies, easy to remember and sing along to—a factor not to be underestimated!
“The Stalker Talks” is another refined, well-arranged sonic gem, while the closure is left to the three minutes of “Last Call”, an elegant closing track, intimate and essential, guided by piano and an extremely delicate guitar that gradually fades away. It is “The Last Call”, the farewell to the concept album, a final realization, and an invitation to disconnect from the illusory world to return to reality.
“Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality)”, in my travel notebook, stands as a candidate for one of the most intelligent, cohesive, and evocative Neo Prog releases of recent times. An essential work for anyone who considers Progressive Rock not as a nostalgic exercise in style, but as a magnifying glass to explore the complexities of the human soul. A must-have. MS
