I tedeschi Vanden Plas, sono una storica band Progressive Metal fondata nel 1988 a Kaiserslautern. Sono noti per la spiccata vena teatrale, l'eleganza compositiva e il virtuosismo bilanciato. A differenza di molti colleghi del settore, la formazione è rimasta storicamente salda attorno al cantante Andy Kuntz, al chitarrista Stephan Lill, al batterista Andreas Lill e al bassista Torsten Reichert. Nel corso dei decenni hanno sfornato capisaldi del genere come “The God Thing” (1997), “Far Off Grace” (1999), “Christ 0” (2006) e “The Ghost Xperiment” (2019/2020). Inoltre, i membri hanno intessuto un profondo legame con il mondo del musical teatrale, lavorando a produzioni ufficiali come “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Evita” o proprie Rock opera come “Ludus Danielis” e “Everyman”. Nel 1996, la band pubblicò un piccolo gioiello acustico intitolato “AcCult”, dove riarrangiava brani propri e cover. A esattamente trent'anni di distanza, la band firma il seguito spirituale con questo “AcCult II”, un capitolo che riprende quella formula intima rileggendo grandi classici della loro discografia e registrando reinterpretazioni d'eccezione. L'album quindi spoglia l'impatto Heavy del gruppo per metterne in risalto la raffinatezza armonica, le melodie vocali e le sfumature strumentali.
“Far Off Grace” è tratta dall’album omonimo del 1999. La versione originale, tirata e guidata da riff di chitarra elettrica, lascia qui il posto a un intreccio di chitarra acustica a 12 corde e pianoforte. I ritmi si ammorbidiscono senza perdere la tensione drammatica.  Qui si tratta il senso di smarrimento, la ricerca di una grazia lontana e il tentativo di superare le proprie fragilità interiori. L'interpretazione acustica di Andy Kuntz accentua la sensazione di vulnerabilità e malinconia.
Segue “Holes In The Sky” tratta da “The God Thing” (1997), il pezzo mantiene la sua ossatura sognante. L'arrangiamento mette in rilievo gli arpeggi puliti e le armonie vocali stratificate, regalandogli un respiro quasi Folk Prog. E’ una riflessione poetica sull'esistenza umana sotto un cielo metaforicamente "bucato", simbolo di speranze infrante e buchi di significato da colmare attraverso l'introspezione.
“The Ghost Experiment” tratta dall’album omonimo (2019/2020) riscrive in chiave acustica un brano nato da un concept album cupo e strutturato. Qui, l'atmosfera si fa intima, sostenuta da note di piano misurate e percussioni leggere. Il testo è ispirato a studi parapsicologici reali (l'esperimento Philip), parla dell'evocazione di uno spirito creato dalla mente umana. Nel contesto acustico, il testo trasmette un senso di spettrale solitudine.
A questo punto giunge la cover, “Boat On The River” del 1979 della band Styx, un omaggio calzante. I Vanden Plas abbracciano le radici Folk dell'originale con chitarre acustiche brillanti, arricchendola con il loro tipico gusto per la dinamica e linee vocali calde e avvolgenti. Si ritorna alla loro discografia con “Healing Tree” tratta da “Beyond Daylight” (2002) , uno dei brani più toccanti dell'intera discografia. Viene infatti trattato il tema del dolore, della perdita e della guarigione ("l'albero della guarigione"). La narrativa riflette sul ciclo delle stagioni e sulla continuità degli affetti anche di fronte al lutto.
Ed è la volta di un loro cavallo di battaglia, quel “Postcard To God”  tratto dal disco “Christ 0” del 2006. La rilettura acustica mette a nudo l'incredibile impalcatura melodica, dove la progressione cresce verso un finale ad alto impatto emotivo. Una disperata quanto poetica "cartolina a Dio" in cui l'essere umano chiede risposte sul dolore, sul silenzio divino e sulla fame di significato nel mondo.
La seconda cover del disco va a toccare un idolo, “Nothing Else Matters” dei Metallica. Affrontare uno dei brani più famosi della storia del Rock è sempre un rischio, ma i Vanden Plas evitano la semplice copia. L'arrangiamento sfrutta sfumature cameristiche e una timbrica vocale molto espressiva che gli dà un’impronta Prog ballad elegante.
“You Fly” con John Helliwell, storico sassofonista dei Supertramp, è tratta da “The God Thing” (1997). Il clarinetto/sax di Helliwell dialoga con le chitarre acustiche e la voce, regalando al pezzo un tocco di eleganza sofisticata e vagamente Jazz Prog.  E’un inno alla libertà e all'elaborazione del distacco, lasciare andare qualcuno o qualcosa per permettergli di spiccare il volo.
In definitiva, “AcCult II” non è un semplice riempitivo o un'operazione nostalgia, ma la dimostrazione di come la grandezza di una band risieda prima di tutto nella forza delle sue canzoni. Spogliati delle sovrastrutture elettriche e del muro di suono Prog Metal, i Vanden Plas mostrano il loro lato più intimo, raffinato ed elegante, confermando che sotto le trame complesse batte da trent'anni un cuore genuinamente melodico. Un ascolto prezioso e avvolgente, consigliato non solo ai fan di lunga data, ma a chiunque ami la musica suonata con anima e classe sublime. MS

The Germans Vanden Plas are a historic Progressive Metal band founded in 1988 in Kaiserslautern. They are known for their strong theatrical flair, compositional elegance, and balanced virtuosity. In 1996, the band released a small acoustic gem titled “AcCult”, where they rearranged their own songs and covers. Exactly thirty years later, the band delivers the spiritual sequel with this “AcCult II”, a chapter that revives that intimate formula by reinterpreting great classics from their discography and recording exceptional covers. The album thus strips away the group's Heavy impact to highlight their harmonic sophistication, vocal melodies, and instrumental nuances.
“Far Off Grace” is taken from the 1999 album of the same name. The original version, fast-paced and driven by electric guitar riffs, gives way here to an interplay of 12-string acoustic guitar and piano. The tempos soften without losing dramatic tension. Here, it deals with the sense of feeling lost, the search for a distant grace, and the attempt to overcome inner vulnerabilities. Andy Kuntz's acoustic performance heightens the feeling of vulnerability and melancholy.
Next comes “Holes In The Sky” from “The God Thing” (1997); the track retains its dreamy framework. The arrangement highlights clean arpeggios and layered vocal harmonies, giving it an almost Folk Prog feel. It is a poetic reflection on human existence under a metaphorically "punctured" sky, a symbol of shattered hopes and voids of meaning to be filled through introspection.
“The Ghost Experiment”, taken from the album of the same name (2019/2020), rewrites in an acoustic key a track born from a dark and structured concept album. Here, the atmosphere becomes intimate, supported by measured piano notes and light percussion. The lyrics are inspired by real parapsychological studies (the Philip experiment) and speak of the invocation of a spirit created by the human mind. In this acoustic context, the text conveys a sense of eerie solitude.
At this point comes the cover, “Boat On The River” (1979) by the band Styx, a fitting homage. Vanden Plas embrace the Folk roots of the original with bright acoustic guitars, enriching it with their signature sense of dynamics and warm, enveloping vocal lines. Returning to their discography with “Healing Tree” from “Beyond Daylight” (2002), we find one of the most touching tracks in their entire body of work. Indeed, it addresses the themes of pain, loss, and healing ("l'albero della guarigione"). The narrative reflects on the cycle of the seasons and the continuity of affection even in the face of grief.
And then it is time for one of their signature pieces, “Postcard To God” from the 2006 record “Christ 0”. The acoustic arrangement lays bare its incredible melodic framework, where the progression builds toward a highly emotional climax. A desperate yet poetic "postcard to God" in which humanity asks for answers about pain, divine silence, and the hunger for meaning in the world.
The second cover of the record touches upon a titan: “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. Tackling one of the most famous tracks in Rock history is always a risk, but Vanden Plas avoid a simple carbon copy. The arrangement employs chamber-music nuances and a highly expressive vocal tone that gives it an elegant Prog ballad touch.
“You Fly”, featuring John Helliwell, the legendary saxophonist of Supertramp, is taken from “The God Thing” (1997). Helliwell's clarinet/sax dialogues with the acoustic guitars and vocals, giving the piece a touch of sophisticated, vaguely Jazz Prog elegance. It is a hymn to freedom and to processing letting go—releasing someone or something to allow them to take flight.
Ultimately, “AcCult II” is not merely a filler release or a nostalgia cash-in, but proof of how a band's greatness resides first and foremost in the strength of its songwriting. Stripped of electric superstructures and the Prog Metal wall of sound, Vanden Plas display their most intimate, refined, and elegant side, confirming that beneath complex textures beats a genuinely melodic heart of thirty years.
