Un tempo, ascoltando le suite Progressive Rock o Prog Metal, consideravo normale imbattersi in brani articolati da trenta minuti, è la natura stessa del genere a chiederlo, per la felicità degli appassionati. Oggi invece, immersi in una società che ha perso la capacità di ascoltare con attenzione, credo che una suite sia un'opera destinata esclusivamente a un pubblico di nicchia. In parole povere, si tratta di un atto di coraggio discografico che spesso può nascere solo da un'autoproduzione. Emblematico è il caso del brano d'apertura di “Falling Together”, album della band americana Advent Horizon, la loro “In A Lone And Dreary World” si estende infatti per ben 19 minuti.
Chi sono gli Advent Horizon? Si sono costituiti nel 2008 a Salt Lake City (Utah, USA), fondati dal chitarrista cantante Rohn Avakean e dal tastierista, cantante, produttore Rian Lewis. La formazione si è poi consolidata con l'ingresso di Caden McBoss (basso), Mike Johnstone (batteria) e altri collaboratori di talento nel corso degli anni.
La band si è fatta strada nella scena Progressive Rock americana grazie alla capacità di unire il rigore esecutivo e i tempi dispari del Prog Metal a una spiccata sensibilità melodica e a una grande cura per l'aspetto vocale e produttivo. Esordiscono nel 2012 con “Immured” per poi maturare nel 2015 con “Stagehound”. La discografia segue un crescendo professionale con “A Cell to Call Home” (2023) e oggi con questo ottimo “Falling Together”.
Ho già detto della suite iniziale, spazia da momenti atmosferici e rarefatti alla Pink Floyd e Porcupine Tree a sezioni grintose (anche un brevissimo attimo di growl) con assoli di chitarra fluidi e riff incisivi. La struttura muta continuamente, alternando fasi intime a esplosioni orchestrali impreziositi dalla bellissima voce di Kristen McDonald che narra il senso di alienazione, smarrimento ed isolamento dell'individuo. Il “mondo solitario e desolato” è sia uno stato mentale sia una metafora della complessità e della freddezza della società moderna.
“Faith's Window” ha un inizio riflessivo ed intimo fra voce sussurrata e arpeggi di chitarra. Bella l’apertura del ritornello e l'intreccio tra tastiere e chitarra che creano una tessitura armonica ricca. La “finestra della fede” rappresenta la lente attraverso cui osserviamo la realtà e mettiamo in discussione le nostre credenze, muovendoci tra disillusione e speranza. Energica “Patience” con i suoi immancabili stop & go. La sezione ritmica del basso di Cason Wood e la batteria di Mike Lofgreen è perfettamente oliata, un motorino garantito per un percorso sonoro piacevole.
Segue “Past Life Parable” con piccoli rimandi alla fine degli anni ’80, quando il genere comincia a costruire solide fondamenta. La chitarra acustica apre “Gravity I”, strumentale che immediatamente si abbraccia con il cuore del Prog fans per poi giungere a “Gravity II”, classico Metal Prog raffinato e ampiamente solare. Il testo sviluppa il tema dell'accettazione e della resa alle forze della vita.
Il disco si conclude con “Animals”, una ballata Prog che da sola vale il prezzo dell’opera.
Con gli Advent Horizon hanno suonato gli ospiti Zach Boorman (chitarra, piano, synth, cori, percussioni), Doug Robinson (chitarra aggiunta in “In A Lone And Dreary World”), e Cressa and Griffin McDonald (cori in “Animals”).
“Falling Together” è un album maturo, coerente e ben bilanciato, in cui la perizia tecnica non va mai a scapito della cantabilità e dell'espressività emotiva, e questo non è un fattore da sottovalutare. MS

Back in the day, listening to Progressive Rock or Prog Metal suites, I considered it normal to come across complex tracks lasting as long as thirty minutes; the very nature of the genre demands it, much to the delight of Prog enthusiasts. Today, however, immersed in a society that has lost the ability to listen attentively, I believe a suite is a work intended exclusively for a niche audience—in plain terms, an act of record-label courage that often can only stem from a self-release. Emblematic of this is the opening track of "Falling Together", the album by the American band Advent Horizon: their "In A Lone And Dreary World" extends for a whopping 19 minutes.
Who are Advent Horizon? They formed in 2008 in Salt Lake City (Utah, USA), founded by guitarist/vocalist Rohn Avakean and keyboardist/vocalist/producer Rian Lewis. The lineup later consolidated with the arrival of Caden McBoss (bass), Mike Johnstone (drums), and other talented collaborators over the years.
The band has made its mark on the American Progressive Rock scene thanks to its ability to blend the technical precision and odd time signatures of Prog Metal with a strong melodic sensitivity and great attention to vocal and production quality. They debuted in 2012 with "Immured", later maturing in 2015 with "Stagehound". Their discography follows a professional crescendo with "A Cell to Call Home" (2023) and today with this excellent "Falling Together".
I have already mentioned the opening suite; it ranges from atmospheric, rarefied moments reminiscent of Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree to gritty sections (even a very brief moment of growling) with fluid guitar solos and incisive riffs. The structure is constantly shifting, alternating intimate moments with orchestral explosions embellished by the beautiful voice of Kristen McDonald, who narrates the individual's sense of alienation, disorientation, and isolation. The "lone and dreary world" is both a state of mind and a metaphor for the complexity and coldness of modern society.
"Faith's Window" has a reflective, intimate beginning featuring whispered vocals and guitar arpeggios. The opening of the chorus is lovely, as is the interplay between keyboards and guitar creating a rich harmonic texture. The "window of faith" represents the lens through which we view reality and question our beliefs, moving between disillusionment and hope. "Patience" is energetic with its inevitable stop-and-go patterns. The rhythm section of Cason Wood's bass and Mike Lofgreen's drums is perfectly oiled—a guaranteed engine for an enjoyable sonic journey.
Next is "Past Life Parable", with subtle nods to the late '80s when the genre was beginning to build solid foundations. Acoustic guitar opens "Gravity I", an instrumental that immediately wins over the heart of any Prog fan before leading into "Gravity II", a refined and intensely bright Prog Metal classic. The lyrics develop the theme of acceptance and surrender to the forces of life.
The album concludes with "Animals", a Prog ballad that is worth the price of admission all on its own.
Joining Advent Horizon on the record were guests Zach Boorman (guitar, piano, synth, backing vocals, percussion), Doug Robinson (additional guitar on "In A Lone And Dreary World"), and Cressa and Griffin McDonald (backing vocals on "Animals").
"Falling Together" is a mature, cohesive, and well-balanced album in which technical proficiency never comes at the expense of catchiness and emotional expressiveness—and that is certainly something not to be taken for granted. MS
