La musica Folk sa farti perdere in ambientazioni bucoliche, se poi queste sono nordiche allora il panorama si fa alquanto intrigante e oscuro. Noi in Italia abbiamo una band di Modena che ha saputo cogliere tutta l’essenza di questa magia, trasformandola in realtà, loro si chiamano Ataraxia e hanno una carriera annosa alle spalle (dal 1985) corredata di ben trenta album in studio, il che la dice lunga sul seguito di pubblico che meritatamente si sono guadagnati. Il termine greco Ataraxia (usato da Epicuro e Pirrone) indica la perfetta tranquillità dell'anima, la liberazione dalle passioni e dai turbamenti. La band non intende la propria musica come intrattenimento o sfogo di pathos emotivo fine a se stesso; per loro comporre ed eseguire musica è un atto sacro, un rituale moderno volto a raggiungere un "equilibrio vibrante", una catarsi che riconnette l'ascoltatore con le forze primordiali della natura e della memoria storica.
“Sylfaera The Fair” oggi ha una valenza speciale perché va a chiudere una trilogia concettuale e spirituale iniziata nel 2022 con “Pomegranate (The Chant Of The Elementals)” e proseguita nel 2024 con “Centaurea”.
Il cuore narrativo del disco ruota attorno a una "Compagnia" di pipes (la cornamusa irlandese), bouzouki, flauti (low e high whistles), tastiere, chitarre classiche ed elettriche, sorrette da percussioni tribali, timpani e bodhrán.
Il nucleo fondamentale della band è rimasto lo stesso per oltre trent'anni, una coesione rarissima nel panorama musicale: Francesca Nicoli (voce, flauti, testi), Vittorio Vandelli (chitarre, programmazioni, timpani) e Giovanni Pagliari (tastiere, piano, sintetizzatori, cori); a loro si affiancano spesso eccellenti collaboratori come violoncellisti o suonatori di strumenti antichi, sia in studio che per i suggestivi "rituali live".
Tutto il disco è evocativo, le sonorità richiamano paesaggi nordici e glaciali, dove il suono profondo dei corni di guerra introduce l'ascoltatore a una dimensione arcaica.
Meravigliosa l’interpretazione vocale da parte di Francesca Nicoli in tutti i passaggi e il disco scorre in queste ambientazioni favolose; solo una menzione a parte per “Llawarra”, scelta non a caso come singolo. Ha un incedere fiero, quasi cavalleresco e medievale, fortemente guidato dalle uilleann pipes (le cornamuse) e da percussioni tribali come il bodhrán. È il momento in cui la Compagnia compie l'azione decisiva, muovendosi con determinazione verso il portale dimensionale.
In generale, “Sylfaera The Fair” è un lavoro denso, teatrale e magico, perfetto per chi ha amato il loro percorso storico e vuole perdersi in atmosfere senza tempo. MS

Folk music has the power to make you lose yourself in bucolic settings; when these are Nordic, the landscape becomes rather intriguing and dark. Here in Italy, we have a band from Modena that has managed to capture the entire essence of this magic, turning it into reality. Their name is Ataraxia, and they have a long-standing career behind them (since 1985) boasting no fewer than thirty studio albums—a fact that speaks volumes about the following they have deservedly earned. The Greek term Ataraxia (used by Epicurus and Pyrrho) indicates the perfect tranquility of the soul, liberation from passions and disturbances. The band does not view their music as mere entertainment or an outlet for emotional pathos as an end in itself; for them, composing and performing music is a sacred act, a modern ritual aimed at achieving a "vibrant balance," a catharsis that reconnects the listener with the primordial forces of nature and historical memory.
“Sylfaera The Fair” holds a special significance today because it closes a conceptual and spiritual trilogy that began in 2022 with “Pomegranate (The Chant Of The Elementals)” and continued in 2024 with “Centaurea”.
The narrative heart of the album revolves around a "Compagnia" [Company] of pipes (Irish bagpipes), bouzouki, flutes (low and high whistles), keyboards, classical and electric guitars, backed by tribal percussion, timpani, and bodhrán.
The core lineup of the band has remained the same for over thirty years, an extremely rare cohesion in the music scene: Francesca Nicoli (vocals, flutes, lyrics), Vittorio Vandelli (guitars, programming, timpani), and Giovanni Pagliari (keyboards, piano, synthesizers, backing vocals); they are often joined by excellent collaborators, such as cellists or players of ancient instruments, both in the studio and for their evocative "live rituals".
The entire album is evocative; the sounds recall Nordic and glacial landscapes, where the deep tone of war horns introduces the listener to an archaic dimension.
Francesca Nicoli’s vocal interpretation is wonderful throughout every passage, and the album flows beautifully through these fabulous settings. Only a special mention goes to “Llawarra”, chosen not by chance as a single. It has a proud, almost chivalric and medieval stride, strongly driven by uilleann pipes and tribal percussion like the bodhrán. It marks the moment when the Company takes decisive action, moving with determination toward the dimensional portal.
Overall, “Sylfaera The Fair” is a dense, theatrical, and magical work, perfect for those who have loved their historical journey and wish to lose themselves in timeless atmospheres. MS
