Uno dei nomi più altisonanti del moderno Neo Prog è sicuramente quello dei gallesi Magenta. Formatisi a Cardiff nel 2001, sin dal debutto con Revolutions (2001) hanno saputo mettersi in luce agli occhi della critica di settore e del pubblico. La voce di Christina Booth è da sempre il marchio di fabbrica della band, dedita a melodie orecchiabili ma mai banali. L’uso della tecnica strumentale è eccellente, una costante che ha accompagnato tutti i loro dieci album in studio.
Oggi ritornano con "Tarot", avvalendosi di ospiti di grande rilievo come Nick D'Virgilio (batteria), Peter Jones e Steve Balsamo (cori), Katie Axelsen (flauto) e Sam Baxter (oboe). La formazione attuale vede Christina Booth alla voce, Robert Reed alle tastiere e chitarra e Chris Fry alla chitarra.
Come suggerisce il titolo, l'intero album è costruito attorno alla figura dei Tarocchi. Non è la prima volta che il mondo del Prog esplora questo tema, ma i Magenta lo fanno dedicando ogni traccia a uno specifico Arcano Maggiore. Ogni brano cerca di catturarne l'essenza psicologica ed emotiva: dalla spensieratezza di The Fool alla solennità di The High Priestess. I testi, curati come di consueto da Steve Reed, offrono una lettura introspettiva e quasi filosofica dei simboli.
I dieci brani che compongono l’album si aprono con "The Lovers", una canzone arrangiata magistralmente in cui Christina dimostra perché è una delle voci più ammirate del genere. La sua interpretazione riesce a trasmettere un senso di calore e protezione, pur mantenendo una fragilità che si sposa perfettamente con il tema della carta degli Amanti. "Etude 1" è un breve interludio acustico di chitarra in stile Mike Oldfield che conduce a "The Magician". Nell'album sono presenti quattro interludi che si inframezzano tra le canzoni, un espediente che richiama quanto fatto dagli Arena con la serie Crying For Help.
In The Magician, la voce funge da guida spirituale, sinuosa e quasi ipnotica nelle strofe, si apre in un ritornello epico e solare che simboleggia l'atto della creazione. La musica, ricca di cambi di tempo, lascia ampio spazio ai duelli tra la chitarra solista (caratterizzata dal tipico sustain lirico alla Steve Hackett/David Gilmour) e i sintetizzatori di Reed.
"The World" è una mini-suite di quasi dieci minuti, solare e vicina all’universo dei Flower Kings. Rappresentando l'ultima carta degli Arcani Maggiori, il brano incarna il successo, la realizzazione e la chiusura di un cerchio; è progettato per lasciare l'ascoltatore con un senso di pace, grazie a un incedere molto armonioso.
Seguono altri dieci minuti di puro Neo Prog con "Strength". In questo brano i Magenta esplorano non la forza bruta, ma quella interiore: il coraggio di affrontare i propri demoni e la capacità di domare la "bestia" che risiede in ognuno di noi (proprio come nell'iconografia classica della carta, dove una donna ammansisce un leone). Si tratta di una delle tracce più robuste dell'album dove la sezione ritmica è molto presente, con un basso pulsante e riff di chitarra più incisivi rispetto alla solarità del brano precedente. Splendida la parte centrale.
"The Empress" presenta un’atmosfera più greve, pur rimarcando i sentieri stilistici della traccia precedente. Anche qui, gli ottimi arrangiamenti restano in primo piano. Chiude la title track, qui il testo riflette sull'idea che le carte siano solo specchi della nostra anima, che non predicono un futuro immutabile ma rivelano ciò che abbiamo già dentro. È un brano che parla di libero arbitrio attraverso la metafora del gioco, una ballata soave e sentita.
Se hai amato lavori come Seven o Metamorphosis, troverai in Tarot quella stessa magia, filtrata attraverso una produzione ancora più curata e una ricerca melodica che sembra non esaurirsi mai. MS

One of the most prominent names in modern Neo-Prog is undoubtedly the Welsh band Magenta. Formed in Cardiff in 2001, they have consistently stood out to both critics and fans since their debut with Revolutions (2001). Christina Booth’s vocals have always been the band’s trademark, delivering melodies that are catchy yet never predictable. Their instrumental technicality is excellent—a constant that has defined all ten of their studio albums.
They return today with Tarot, featuring high-profile guests such as Nick D'Virgilio (drums), Peter Jones and Steve Balsamo (backing vocals), Katie Axelsen (flute), and Sam Baxter (oboe). The current lineup features Christina Booth on vocals, Robert Reed on keyboards and guitar, and Chris Fry on guitar.
As the title suggests, the entire album is built around the figures of the Tarot. While this isn't the first time the Prog world has explored this theme, Magenta approaches it by dedicating each track to a specific Major Arcanum. Every song seeks to capture the psychological and emotional essence of the card: from the carefree nature of The Fool to the solemnity of The High Priestess. The lyrics, penned as usual by Steve Reed, offer an introspective and almost philosophical interpretation of these symbols.
The ten tracks comprising the album open with "The Lovers," a masterfully arranged song where Christina demonstrates why she is one of the genre’s most admired voices. Her performance conveys a sense of warmth and protection while maintaining a fragility that perfectly suits the theme of the Lovers card. "Etude 1" is a brief acoustic guitar interlude in the style of Mike Oldfield, leading into "The Magician." There are four such interludes interspersed throughout the album, a device reminiscent of Arena’s Crying For Help series.
In "The Magician," the vocals act as a spiritual guide—sinuous and almost hypnotic in the verses, then opening into an epic, bright chorus symbolizing the act of creation. The music, rich with time signature changes, leaves ample room for duels between the lead guitar (featuring that lyrical sustain typical of Steve Hackett or David Gilmour) and Reed’s synthesizers.
"The World" is a nearly ten-minute mini-suite, bright and reminiscent of the Flower Kings' musical universe. As the final card of the Major Arcana, the track embodies success, fulfillment, and the closing of a circle; it is designed to leave the listener with a sense of peace through its very harmonious pace.
Another ten minutes of pure Neo-Prog follow with "Strength." In this piece, Magenta explores inner strength rather than brute force: the courage to face one’s demons and the ability to tame the "beast" within (mirroring the card’s classical iconography of a woman taming a lion). This is one of the album’s more robust tracks, featuring a prominent rhythm section with a pulsing bass and sharper guitar riffs compared to the sunnier tones of the previous track. The middle section is magnificent.
"The Empress" presents a heavier atmosphere while following the stylistic paths set by the preceding track. Once again, the excellent arrangements take center stage. The album concludes with the title track; here, the lyrics reflect on the idea that the cards are merely mirrors of our souls—they do not predict an unchangeable future but reveal what we already carry inside. It is a song about free will told through the metaphor of the game, a gentle and heartfelt ballad.
If you loved works like Seven or Metamorphosis, you will find that same magic in Tarot, now filtered through even more refined production and a melodic search that seems never-ending.
