Essendo io cresciuto fra gli anni ’70 e gli ’80, ho potuto apprezzare appieno l’evoluzione del genere sino a giungere, nei primi anni ’80, al Neo Prog. Orfano del Prog classico, in quel periodo mi sono legato a quelle band che potremmo definire a loro volta “storiche”, come Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon ecc. In Italia il fenomeno è giunto quasi in sordina, a parte casi come gli alessandrini Arcansiel e poco più, ma di questo ho già parlato nel mio libro “Neo Prog” (Arcana).
Nel tempo il genere si è saputo evolvere, assorbendo le influenze circostanti dettate dalle mode e dalla tecnologia, che nel frattempo è cambiata notevolmente. Giungendo agli anni 2000, in Italia i fenomeni sono molteplici, fra i quali spicca la band Kerygmatic Project, formatasi nel 1998 e composta da Marco Campagnolo (tastiere), Danilo Nobili (batteria) e Samuele Tadini (voce, basso, chitarra).
Il termine 'Kerygmatic', che deriva da 'Kerygma', ha due significati fondamentali: il primo, di origine greca, significa 'messaggio' o, più precisamente, 'proclamazione'; il secondo indica il primo esempio di predicazione cristiana. Nell'antichità, all'interno della comunità d'origine, il termine designava il nucleo stesso del Cristianesimo.
Musicalmente, nonostante la complessità strutturale, la band mantiene sempre un'anima Pop Rock accessibile, in un mix fra Genesis e Marillion. Rispetto ai lavori precedenti, l'album integra una maggiore presenza di elementi elettronici e synth-wave, pur mantenendo salde le radici nel Neo Prog.
Dopo aver rilasciato nel tempo cinque album, “A Bolt From The Blue” rappresenta il loro sesto sigillo in studio e segna un'evoluzione significativa per il gruppo. Il titolo stesso suggerisce l'idea di un evento improvviso e inaspettato, un "fulmine a ciel sereno" che scuote la realtà.
I loro testi spaziano spesso tra filosofia, attualità e introspezione psicologica. L'album si apre con la title track, che curiosamente è uno dei brani più brevi (02:23), questo suggerisce che funga da vera e propria scossa iniziale, un'introduzione strumentale o un manifesto sonoro rapido che prepara il terreno per i pezzi più complessi.
Fra i brani più interessanti cito “Regeneration”, il più lungo con i suoi otto minuti; in pieno stile Neo Prog, qui la band ha lo spazio per esplorare cambi di tempo e atmosfere stratificate, iniziando pacatamente con voce e tastiere per poi dipanarsi in fughe più articolate. “The Real Loser Liar” e “Money, Power & Sex” sembrano formare un blocco tematico forte, probabilmente legato a una critica verso l'ipocrisia sociale e l'avidità. Si passa poi da titoli duri a momenti apparentemente più melodici o narrativi come “I Can't Keep My Eyes Off You” e la chiusura cinematografica di “Sunset Boulevard”. Grazie a Samuele Tadini e Danilo Nobili, la sezione ritmica non è mai banale, specialmente in tracce come “The S.High School Open Day”.
In un mercato musicale spesso dominato da brani "usa e getta", i Kerygmatic Project continuano a difendere il formato album come opera d'arte unitaria. Se amate il Rock che richiede attenzione ma che sa anche emozionare al primo ascolto, "A Bolt From The Blue" è sicuramente una delle uscite che potrebbero interessarvi. MS

Having grown up between the '70s and '80s, I was able to fully appreciate the evolution of the genre until reaching, in the early '80s, Neo Prog. Left orphaned by classic Prog, during that period I bonded with those bands that we might now define as "historic" in their own right, such as Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, etc. In Italy, the phenomenon arrived almost quietly, apart from cases like Arcansiel from Alessandria and little else, but I have already discussed this in my book “Neo Prog” (Arcana).
Over time, the genre has managed to evolve, absorbing surrounding influences dictated by trends and technology, which in the meantime has changed significantly. Moving into the 2000s, there are numerous phenomena in Italy, among which the band Kerygmatic Project stands out. Formed in 1998, the group is composed of Marco Campagnolo (keyboards), Danilo Nobili (drums), and Samuele Tadini (vocals, bass, guitar).
The term 'Kerygmatic', which derives from 'Kerygma', has two fundamental meanings: the first, of Greek origin, means 'message' or, more precisely, 'proclamation'; the second indicates the first example of Christian preaching. In antiquity, within the original community, the term designated the very core of Christianity.
Musically, despite the structural complexity, the band always maintains an accessible Pop Rock soul, in a mix between Genesis and Marillion. Compared to previous works, the album integrates a greater presence of electronic and synth-wave elements, while keeping its roots firmly planted in Neo Prog. After releasing five albums over time, “A Bolt From The Blue” represents their sixth studio seal and marks a significant evolution for the group. The title itself suggests the idea of a sudden and unexpected event, a "bolt from the blue" that shakes reality.
Their lyrics often range between philosophy, current events, and psychological introspection. The album opens with the title track, which curiously is one of the shortest songs (02:23); this suggests it serves as a true initial "jolt," an instrumental introduction or a quick sonic manifesto that prepares the ground for the more complex pieces.
Among the most interesting tracks, I mention “Regeneration”, the longest at eight minutes; in full Neo Prog style, here the band has the space to explore time signature changes and layered atmospheres, starting quietly with vocals and keyboards before unfolding into more articulated sections. “The Real Loser Liar” and “Money, Power & Sex” seem to form a strong thematic block, likely linked to a critique of social hypocrisy and greed. It then shifts from harsh titles to moments that are seemingly more melodic or narrative, such as “I Can't Keep My Eyes Off You” and the cinematic closing of “Sunset Boulevard”. Thanks to Samuele Tadini and Danilo Nobili, the rhythm section is never predictable, especially in tracks like “The S.High School Open Day”.
In a music market often dominated by "disposable" tracks, Kerygmatic Project continues to defend the album format as a unified work of art. If you love Rock that requires attention but also knows how to thrill at first listen, "A Bolt From The Blue" is certainly one of the releases that might interest you. MS
