Negli anni ’70 una delle band più interessanti dell’intero panorama italico in ambito Progressive Rock è stata quella dei Jumbo di Alvaro Fella e del chitarrista Daniele Bianchini, purtroppo recentemente scomparso. Collaboratore di Franco Battiato, Bianchini sin dal 1961 ha saputo spaziare in numerosi generi musicali che vanno dall’Hard Rock al Prog, alla Fusion e alla New Age.
Nel 1985 forma il gruppo multimediale Moving Music, concretizzando le esperienze di quegli anni con lo spettacolo “Il Cappello Magico”. Nel 2001 incide il CD “Passing By”, mentre nel 2004 escono il DVD “Jumbo Anthology” e il CD “Poche Parole”.
Ma è nel 2011 che l’artista trova una nuova sintesi con il passaggio alla chitarra acustica pizzicata nel progetto Tri-On, attraverso un'attitudine sperimentale e la potenza del linguaggio Rock. Il trio è composto da Paul Richard Hager (chitarra, basso, tastiere, cori), Dave Vaglia (batteria) e Daniele Bianchini (chitarre, voce).
Fra passato e presente, la sua musica è totale, anche se la veste primaria deriva dal Jazz Prog e il risultato porta il titolo di “Novecento”: otto canzoni con riflessioni sulla pandemia e sull’ombra dei conflitti attuali (l'album fu terminato proprio nei giorni dell'ammassarsi delle truppe ai confini ucraini), che invitano l’ascoltatore a riscoprire l’umiltà, lo studio e la ricerca come uniche armi contro l’arroganza del presente.
La band riesce in un'impresa non facile: prendere la complessità innata del Progressive Rock e spogliarla, distillandola in un assetto prevalentemente acustico senza perdere un briciolo di potenza espressiva o di dinamismo. L'album esplora altresì costellazioni tematiche legate al tempo, all'identità, all'evoluzione scientifica e alla memoria. L'idea portante è che il nostro Presente sia costantemente plasmato dalla storia e che non possa esistere alcun Futuro senza la salvaguardia della memoria del Passato.
Un esempio lampante di questa commistione tra scienza ed etica è il brano "Via Panisperna", chiaramente ispirato alla celebre via romana e alla misteriosa figura del fisico Ettore Majorana, che porta l'ascoltatore a riflettere sul peso e sulle responsabilità della conoscenza umana.
Dal punto di vista sonoro, “Novecento” è un disco per lo più strumentale, caratterizzato da un intreccio organico e fluido tra le due chitarre acustiche e le percussioni, radicato nella sensibilità degli anni '70 ma proiettato in avanti.
L'album è inoltre accompagnato da una guida all'ascolto dettagliata, concepita come parte integrante dell'opera per permettere all'ascoltatore di decodificare i fili concettuali ed emotivi che collegano i vari brani.
Tutto è misurato, riflessivo e controcorrente. In un mercato musicale dominato dall'istantaneità e dall'iperproduzione, i TRI-ON invitano a un ascolto lento, attento e profondo, lasciando un segno indelebile nel panorama del Progressive acustico italiano.
In occasione di questa pubblicazione, è stata creata una pagina di raccolta fondi in memoria di Daniele Bianchini. L'iniziativa nasce per trasformare il ricordo di un artista amato in speranza e futuro per migliaia di persone che hanno bisogno di cure: ogni donazione a EMERGENCY si trasformerà in gesti di pace e assistenza medica gratuita, in Italia e nel mondo. In the 1970s, one of the most interesting bands on the entire Italian Progressive Rock scene was Jumbo, led by Alvaro Fella and guitarist Daniele Bianchini, who sadly passed away recently. A collaborator of Franco Battiato, Bianchini had been able to span numerous musical genres since 1961, ranging from Hard Rock to Prog, Fusion, and New Age.
In 1985, he formed the multimedia group Moving Music, bringing the experiences of those years to life with the show “Il Cappello Magico”. In 2001, he recorded the CD “Passing By”, while 2004 saw the release of the DVD “Jumbo Anthology” and the CD “Poche Parole”.
But it was in 2011 that the artist found a new synthesis by shifting to the fingerpicked acoustic guitar in the Tri-On project, through an experimental attitude and the power of Rock language. The trio consists of Paul Richard Hager (guitar, bass, keyboards, backing vocals), Dave Vaglia (drums), and Daniele Bianchini (guitars, vocals).
Between past and present, his music is total, even though its primary guise stems from Jazz Prog, and the result is titled “Novecento”: eight songs featuring reflections on the pandemic and the shadow of current conflicts (the album was finished precisely during the days when troops were massing on the Ukrainian borders), inviting the listener to rediscover humility, study, and research as the only weapons against the arrogance of the present.
The band succeeds in a far from easy task: taking the inherent complexity of Progressive Rock and stripping it down, distilling it into a predominantly acoustic arrangement without losing a single fraction of expressive power or dynamism. The album also explores thematic constellations related to time, identity, scientific evolution, and memory. The core idea is that our Present is constantly shaped by history, and that no Future can exist without safeguarding the memory of the Past.
A striking example of this blend of science and ethics is the track "Via Panisperna", clearly inspired by the famous Roman street and the mysterious figure of physicist Ettore Majorana, which leads the listener to reflect on the weight and responsibilities of human knowledge.
From a sonic standpoint, “Novecento” is a mostly instrumental album, characterized by an organic and fluid interplay between the two acoustic guitars and percussion, rooted in the sensitivity of the 1970s but projected forward.
The album is also accompanied by a detailed listening guide, conceived as an integral part of the work to allow the listener to decode the conceptual and emotional threads connecting the various tracks.
Everything is measured, reflective, and counter-current. In a music market dominated by instantaneousness and overproduction, TRI-ON invite us to a slow, attentive, and deep listening experience, leaving an indelible mark on the Italian acoustic Progressive scene.
