Non c’è nulla da fare, l’Hard Rock melodico dal vivo ha una marcia in più e fa capire perché questa musica non avrà mai fine. Se a farlo poi è una band storica come la torinese Elektradrive, allora gli ingredienti giusti per una perfetta riuscita ci sono tutti.
Non ricordo a memoria un live di una band italiana uscito in doppio CD, e “Live!” nasce per celebrare i quarant'anni di carriera della band, la cui avventura discografica è iniziata nei primi anni Ottanta. Dopo una pausa durata circa un decennio, nel 2023 gli Elektradrive decidono di rimettersi in gioco e, cosa fondamentale, di riunire la formazione originale. Ecco dunque Simone Falovo (chitarra, cori), Elio Maugeri (voce, cori), Stefano Turolla (basso, cori), Alex Jorio (batteria, cori) e Eugenio Manassero (tastiere, cori), cimentarsi nuovamente in un Hard Rock melodico e AOR, capaci all'epoca di conquistare anche la critica internazionale.
Il materiale che compone le tracce è stato catturato durante le intense serate della reunion tra il 2023 e il 2024, in particolare durante i concerti dedicati anche al 35° anniversario di “Due”. Come dichiarato dal chitarrista e membro fondatore Simone Falovo, le venti tracce incluse nel doppio CD sono state volutamente pubblicate senza sovraincisioni o correzioni in studio (no overdubbing). La band ha voluto consegnare ai fan una fotografia autentica, umana e pulsante, accettando anche le piccole imperfezioni fisiologiche di un vero concerto Rock, per questo si respira aria pura e coinvolgente. Il materiale audio è stato affidato alle mani esperte di Simone Falovo stesso, che si è occupato del mixaggio e del mastering presso i Fandango Studios. Questo ha permesso di mantenere il suono esattamente come la band voleva che fosse percepito, ossia potente, nitido, ma senza quella laccatura artificiale tipica di molti live moderni. Il basso di Stefano Turolla e la cassa di Alex Jorio spingono molto, restituendo la dinamica di un club o di un festival Rock.
I venti brani che compongono la testimonianza, fungono da perfetto compendio storico, andando a pescare equamente dai loro quattro celebrati album in studio e persino dagli esordi assoluti.
Il CD 1 parte proprio dalle radici, con l'intro “Take Off” che sfocia nella potente “Secret Of The Holy Grave” e nella successiva “Lord Of The Rings”, entrambe tratte dal debutto “Over The Space” del 1986.
Il glorioso passato AOR vede ampio spazio attraverso le gemme estratte da “Due” (1989), tra cui spicca l'epica “A Man That Got No Heart”, scelta anche come singolo videoclip promozionale per lanciare il live, e ballate d'alta scuola come “Still Remember”, dove emerge il sopraffino lavoro solista di Falovo.
Per gli anni ’90 tanta carne al fuoco, da “Big City” (1993) vengono riproposti classici d'impatto come “The Riot Of The Young Guns” e la splendida ballad “Lucille”, che mettono in mostra la pulizia dei cori polifonici, da sempre marchio di fabbrica della band. E poi due chicche imperdibili, la recente “Dirty War Of Bloody Angels” tratta da “Living 4 del 2009 e soprattutto il ripescaggio di “Brainstorm”, il loro primissimo e storico singolo d'esordio datato 1984.
Il sound complessivo del live beneficia del contrasto naturale tra le tastiere precise di Massanero (eccellente l'intro "meccanica" di “Time Machine”) e i riff quadrati di Falovo, sorretti da una sezione ritmica monumentale e dalla voce sempre graffiante e comunicativa di Maugeri. Una delle sorprese più grandi per gli addetti ai lavori è stata la performance vocale di Elio Maugeri. Spesso i cantanti storici della scena Hard Heavy tendono ad abbassare l'accordatura dei brani dal vivo per proteggere le corde vocali sulle note più alte. Gli Elektradrive hanno scelto di suonare i pezzi nelle tonalità originali, e Maugeri regge l'impatto con una ruvidità e un'estensione impressionanti, specialmente sui brani più ostici di “Due” e “Over The Space”.
Questo doppio lavoro firmato Andromeda Relix non vuole essere un documento nostalgico, ma la prova tangibile della vitalità e della maturità artistica intatta di una band che ha scritto pagine indelebili del Rock duro italiano.
Non fatevelo sfuggire per nessun motivo, perché per affrontare la vita serve energia e freschezza e gli Elektradrive sanno come ricaricarvi. Musica per tutti i palati! MS

There is simply no way around it: melodic Hard Rock recorded live has an extra gear, making it perfectly clear why this music will never die. When it is delivered by a historic band like Turin's own Elektradrive, all the right ingredients for a flawless outcome are fully in place.
I cannot recall from memory a live album by an Italian band released as a double CD, and “Live!” was born to celebrate the band's forty-year career, a recording journey that began in the early 1980s. Following a hiatus that lasted about a decade, in 2023 Elektradrive decided to get back into the game and, crucially, to reunite the original lineup. And so, here are Simone Falovo (guitar, backing vocals), Elio Maugeri (lead vocals, backing vocals), Stefano Turolla (bass, backing vocals), Alex Jorio (drums, backing vocals), and Eugenio Manassero (keyboards, backing vocals), once again testing their mettle with a brand of melodic Hard Rock and AOR that, back in the day, was capable of winning over international critics as well.
The material making up the tracks was captured during the intense nights of the reunion between 2023 and 2024, particularly during the concerts also dedicated to the 35th anniversary of “Due”. As declared by guitarist and founding member Simone Falovo, the twenty tracks included in the double CD were deliberately released without studio overdubbing or corrections (no overdubbing). The band wanted to deliver an authentic, human, and pulsing snapshot to their fans, embracing even the small, physiological imperfections of a real Rock concert, which is exactly why the album breathes such a pure and engaging atmosphere. The audio material was entrusted to the expert hands of Simone Falovo himself, who handled the mixing and mastering at Fandango Studios. This allowed the sound to remain exactly as the band intended it to be heard: namely powerful and crisp, yet without that artificial, glossy finish typical of many modern live albums. Stefano Turolla's bass and Alex Jorio's kick drum punch right through, delivering the true dynamics of a Rock club or festival.
The twenty songs that make up this testimony serve as a perfect historical compendium, pulling equally from their four celebrated studio albums and even from their absolute earliest days.
CD 1 starts right from the roots, with the intro “Take Off” flowing into the powerful “Secret Of The Holy Grave” and the subsequent “Lord Of The Rings”, both taken from their 1986 debut “Over The Space”.
The glorious AOR past is given ample space through the gems extracted from “Due” (1989), most notably the epic “A Man That Got No Heart”—also chosen as the promotional video single to launch the live album—and high-class ballads like “Still Remember”, which highlights Falovo's exquisite solo work.
For the '90s era, there is plenty of fuel for the fire: from “Big City” (1993), hard-hitting classics such as “The Riot Of The Young Guns” and the splendid ballad “Lucille” are brought back, showcasing the pristine polyphonic backing vocals that have always been the band's trademark. On top of that, we get two unmissable gems: the recent “Dirty War Of Bloody Angels” taken from 2009's “Living 4”, and above all, the revival of “Brainstorm”, their very first and historic debut single dating back to 1984.
The live album's overall sound benefits from the natural contrast between Massanero's precise keyboards (such as the excellent, "mechanical" intro to “Time Machine”) and Falovo's tight, chunky riffs, all backed by a monumental rhythm section and Maugeri's ever-gritty, expressive vocals. One of the biggest surprises for insiders was the vocal performance of Elio Maugeri. Often, veteran singers in the Hard & Heavy scene tend to drop the tuning of songs live to protect their vocal cords on the higher notes. Elektradrive chose to play the tracks in their original keys, and Maugeri holds his ground with impressive grit and range, especially on the more demanding tracks from “Due” and “Over The Space”.
This double album released by Andromeda Relix is not meant to be a nostalgic document, but tangible proof of the undiminished vitality and artistic maturity of a band that has written indelible pages of Italian hard Rock.
Do not let this one slip away for any reason; facing life requires energy and freshness, and Elektradrive certainly know how to recharge your batteries. Music for all palates! MS
