Il Prog come attitudine si avvicina alla musica classica, immaginate voi nel passato maestri come Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, ecc. quanto sperimentavano e ricercavano. Non a caso alcuni etichettano la musica Prog come “musica colta”. Il sinfonismo si è quindi addentrato nel Rock negli anni ’60 mutando radicalmente lo scenario, in cui la chitarra elettrica non è più stata l’unico epicentro del Rock. Dico questo perché, come Vivaldi ha fatto le sue “Quattro Stagioni”, leggendo l’ultimo album di Zerothehero denoto quattro elementi naturali: acqua, terra, vento e fuoco; di certo non un'analogia musicale e tantomeno concettuale, ma ha tutte le caratteristiche attitudinali nei confronti della musica. Quattro dunque i brani contenuti in questo ultimo album, ma andiamo per ordine.
Zerothehero è il progetto solista di Carlo Barreca, bassista e polistrumentista attivo nella scena underground e Progressive genovese. Noto per la sua militanza nei Fungus (formazione ligure d'estrazione Space/Psychedelic Prog), Barreca trae il nome “Zerothehero” dal celebre personaggio concettuale creato da Daevid Allen per la mitologia/trilogia di “Radio Gnome Invisible” dei Gong.
Nel suo percorso da solista, Barreca fonde quindi Space Rock, Psichedelia, Crossover Prog e sonorità instrumental-ambient o di derivazione Krautrock. Tra le sue uscite precedenti figurano l'album “Bolla” (2022) e il mini-album “The Flat Earth Society” (2024).
Il nuovo “Tetra” è un'opera interamente strumentale articolata in quattro estese suite. Il concept, come già accennato, fa riferimento alla tetralogia degli elementi naturali della filosofia classica greca (Acqua, Terra, Aria, Fuoco).
Trattandosi di un progetto solista, l'album è interamente ideato, composto ed eseguito da Carlo Barreca che, oltre ad occuparsi della programmazione ritmica e dei sintetizzatori, suona tutti i seguenti strumenti: basso elettrico, chitarra elettrica, tastiere e sintetizzatori, tromba, flauto e Venova (uno strumento a fiato monofonico con digitazione simile al flauto dolce ma con bocchino ad ancia come il sassofono).
Il primo elemento è l’acqua e “Hydor” è una suite di diciassette minuti che evoca la fluidità e il continuo mutamento dello stato acquatico. L'incipit si muove su arpeggi dilatati, sintetizzatori d'ambiente e trame bassistiche fluide, crescendo gradualmente in un incedere ritmico d'ispirazione Canterbury/Space Rock. La seconda metà sviluppa variazioni dinamiche che alternano momenti di quiete a improvvisi sovraccarichi sonori, richiamando l'imprevedibilità e la profondità delle correnti marine. Ottime le trame di chitarra elettrica, oltre alle atmosfere dilatate.
Si passa alla terra con “Ge”: dopo un inizio onirico il ritmo sale e il basso di Barreca si posiziona in primo piano, dettando riff pesanti e ricorsivi che sfiorano lo Stoner/Space Prog. Gli inserti elettronici e le tastiere lavorano su frequenze medio-basse, offrendo un'atmosfera materica e claustrofobica.
“Aer” è l’elemento aria. La composizione si alleggerisce dal punto di vista timbrico: suoni di sintetizzatore ad ampio respiro, pad atmosferici ed effetti di spazializzazione sonora (eco, delay) creano un ambiente etereo e fluttuante. Le linee di basso si fanno liriche ed espressive, mentre la struttura priva di uno schema strofa-ritornello rigido favorisce un senso di sospensione psichedelica e contemplativa.
Chiude l’elemento fuoco “Pyr”, sviluppandosi su un crescendo ritmico serrato, con linee di sintetizzatore più incisive e graffianti. L'interazione tra le sequenze elettroniche e il lavoro ritmico sfocia in una cavalcata Space Rock aggressiva, che chiude idealmente la trasformazione degli elementi fondenti nel concetto di "Tetra".
Questo è un ascolto raccomandato non solo agli amanti del Prog e della Psichedelia di matrice ligure, ma a chiunque cerchi una musica capace di evocare immagini e creare veri e propri paesaggi sonori. Con me ci è riuscito. MS

Prog as an attitude comes close to classical music; just imagine past masters like Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, etc., and how much they experimented and researched. It is no coincidence that some label Prog music as “cultivated music.” Symphonism thus seeped into Rock during the '60s, radically changing the landscape, where the electric guitar was no longer the sole epicenter of Rock. I say this because, just as Vivaldi created his “Four Seasons,” reading through Zerothehero's latest album I notice four natural elements: water, earth, wind, and fire; certainly not a musical analogy, let alone a conceptual one, but it possesses all the attitudinal characteristics toward music. Four songs are contained in this latest album, but let's take things in order.
Zerothehero is the solo project of Carlo Barreca, bassist and multi-instrumentalist active in the Genoese underground and Progressive scene. Known for his tenure in Fungus (a Ligurian outfit with Space/Psychedelic Prog roots), Barreca derives the name “Zerothehero” from the famous conceptual character created by Daevid Allen for Gong's “Radio Gnome Invisible” mythology/trilogy.
In his solo career, Barreca merges Space Rock, Psych, Crossover Prog, and instrumental-ambient textures or Krautrock-derived sounds. His previous releases include the album “Bolla” (2022) and the mini-album “The Flat Earth Society” (2024).
The new “Tetra” is an entirely instrumental work structured into four extensive suites. As mentioned, the concept references the tetralogy of natural elements from classical Greek philosophy (Water, Earth, Air, Fire).
Being a solo project, the album is entirely conceived, composed, and performed by Carlo Barreca who, besides handling rhythm programming and synthesizers, plays all of the following instruments: electric bass, electric guitar, keyboards and synths, trumpet, flute, and Venova (a single-reed woodwind instrument with fingering similar to a recorder but with a mouthpiece and reed like a saxophone).
The first element is water, and “Hydor” is a seventeen-minute suite evoking the fluidity and continuous change of the aquatic state. The opening moves through expansive arpeggios, ambient synths, and fluid bass textures, gradually building into a rhythmic pace inspired by Canterbury/Space Rock. The second half develops dynamic variations that alternate quiet moments with sudden sonic surges, recalling the unpredictability and depth of ocean currents. Excellent electric guitar work, alongside the spacious atmospheres.
Moving on to earth with “Ge”: after a dreamlike start, the tempo picks up and Barreca's bass takes center stage, laying down heavy, recursive riffs that border on Stoner/Space Prog. Electronic flourishes and keyboards operate on lower-mid frequencies, offering a tactile and claustrophobic atmosphere.
“Aer” represents the air element. The composition lightens in terms of timbre: expansive synth sounds, atmospheric pads, and spatial audio effects (echo, delay) create an ethereal, floating environment. The basslines become lyrical and expressive, while the absence of a rigid verse-chorus structure fosters a sense of psychedelic, contemplative suspension.
Closing out is the fire element, “Pyr”, developing over a tight rhythmic crescendo with sharper, grittier synth lines. The interaction between electronic sequences and rhythmic work culminates in an aggressive Space Rock ride, ideally concluding the transformation of fusing elements into the concept of "Tetra".
This is a recommended listen not only for fans of Ligurian Prog and Psychedelia, but for anyone searching for music capable of evoking imagery and building true soundscapes. It certainly succeeded with me. MS
