Last Knight

LAST KNIGHT - The Lords Of Wisdom Season 1 Episode I: Reconquista Asturias
Somnus Media
Genere: Progressive Rock Sinfonico
Supporto: CD / Bandcamp – 2026

MS

LAST KNIGHT - The Lords Of Wisdom Season 1 Episode I: Reconquista Asturias
Somnus Media
Genre: Symphonic Progressive Rock
Format: CD / Bandcamp – 2026

Classical music has always been a central core in much of modern musical output, so much so that Progressive Rock turns it into symphony, enriching a language that within Rock itself is no longer strictly guitar-centric.
It is a pleasure to come across projects in which medieval history ties into this context as well, bringing further creative growth.
Last Knight is an international project led by José Manuel Medina, founded in 1997. Over the years, many musicians have rotated through the lineup, including Mike Oldfield, John Helliwell (Supertramp), and Maggie Reilly. Their discography typically focuses on historical concept albums, starting with "Lord Of The Time" in 2001, followed by five other albums including this "The Lords Of Wisdom Season 1 Episode I: Reconquista Asturias," which begins a new trilogy of stories. Set during the Reconquista in the Iberian Peninsula (711–1492 AD), it deals with the birth of the Kingdom of Asturias led by Don Pelayo after the Battle of Covadonga (722 AD)—the initial core of Christian resistance against the expansion of the Caliphate and the starting point for the formation of the future kingdoms of León, Galicia, and Navarre (Pamplona).
The project is therefore quite ambitious and rich in musicians, whom I will list in order: Jose Manuel Medina (vocals, all instruments), Marc Atkinson (lead and backing vocals), Mariano Gardella (lead and backing vocals), Deibys Artigas (lead and backing vocals), Rafael Pacha (guitars, violin, percussion, mandolin, flute), Pablo Lato (bass), Nelson Pombal (guitars), Kheiro Lamri (guitars), Troy Donockley (whistles), Victor Adebisi (violin), Ian Palmer (drums), and The Somnus Symphony Orchestra & Choir.
The running time is fairly extensive: 71 minutes of music divided into 15 tracks.
Naturally, it begins with an overture—or rather, “The Grand Overture”—an entirely instrumental symphonic track. It uses layers of keyboards, synth orchestrations, electric guitars, and dynamic rhythms to introduce the recurring musical themes of the album.
“In The Middle Ages” is instead a classic Progressive Rock track where acoustic and electric guitars intertwine with synths and organ. It develops a fluid lead vocal melody with mid-track time changes and narrates daily life, the uncertainties, and the harsh reality of the Iberian
Peninsula at the beginning of the Middle Ages, introducing the atmosphere of impending conflict between different cultures and faiths. However, believe me, there is no need to analyze every single musical movement, as you have already grasped the context and would get bored reading it—we are consistently surrounded by great melodies and rich symphonies. Still, I must highlight the beauty of at least three tracks that make this concept a great album: “War,” which is decidedly vintage-flavored Hard Rock, and the suite “The Kingdom Of Leon,” the centerpiece of the album alongside the second suite, “The Kingdom Of Galicia.” It alternates symphonic sections, 70s-style prog keyboard solos, acoustic passages, and majestic orchestrations in a building crescendo. It tells the story of the southward expansion of Asturias, the relocation of the capital, and the birth of the powerful Kingdom of León, the political heart of the Reconquista.
Last Knight prove once again how symphonic Prog Rock can serve as an excellent vehicle for historical storytelling. Between orchestrations, Celtic-Iberian folk flourishes, and sudden electrified peaks, the record conveys all the epic scale and drama surrounding the birth of the kingdoms of Spain. A dense, cultured, and deeply immersive listen, recommended to all lovers of grand conceptual structures. When music turns into a film for the mind, Last Knight serve as excellent directors.
