Si sa che la musica come linguaggio non ha confini, per questo a volte capita di poter ascoltare un genere musicale che, seppur non nato in un determinato paese, viene comunque rappresentato al meglio. Ciò non accade soltanto con l’avvento di internet il quale ha provveduto a globalizzare molta musica dando la possibilità a tutti di poter ascoltare tantissimo materiale, ma anche negli anni ’70, per esempio quando il Jazz Rock di gruppi come Perigeo, Arti & Mestieri, Agorà (per fare nomi italiani) davano sfoggio della propria caratura.
La Polonia in ambito Progressive Rock è sempre stata attiva, basti pensare a gruppi come Collage oppure i Quidam, soprattutto nel Neo Prog, ma ci sono delle sorprese dietro l’angolo, ecco che i Kwadrat propongono un Jazz Rock strumentale intriso di classicismo e buona tecnica.
L'album “Mechanizm” è una raccolta di registrazioni d'archivio pubblicata dalla label specializzata Gad Records. Raccoglie i primi brani in studio incisi dalla band per Polskie Radio Katowice all'inizio della loro carriera (tra la fine degli anni '70 e l'inizio degli anni '80), molti dei quali finora inediti su CD o mai pubblicati nel formato originale.
Si fondano a Katowice verso la fine degli anni '70. Emersi nell'ambito del movimento polacco Muzyka Młodej Generacji (Musica della Giovane Generazione), si fecero notare nel 1979 durante il festival Pop Session a Sopot.
Guidati da complessi intrecci strumentali, il loro stile si caratterizza per solismi di chitarra virtuosi, cambi di tempo serrati e l'uso distintivo delle tastiere e della viola. Sebbene la band abbia pubblicato un solo album in studio LP all'epoca (“Polowanie Na Leśniczego” nel 1981) e un singolo da 7" per l'etichetta Tonpress, il loro lavoro d'archivio è riconosciuto tra i capitoli più affascinanti della scena fusion ed est-europea dell'epoca.
La formazione è composta da Teodor Danysz (tastiere), Ryszard Wegrzyn (chitarra), Adam Otreba (chitarra), Jacek Gazda (basso), Michal Giercuszkiewicz (batteria), e Wieslaw Susfal (violino).
“Polowanie Na Leśniczego” originariamente pubblicato come singolo nel 1979, è dominato da un ritmo sostenuto, riff di chitarra aggressivi e un lavoro di basso in evidenza. Tanto classicismo a bagaglio e una scelta delle melodie davvero “europea” e centrata. Ottimo il lavoro del violino. Vedrete che i movimenti riusciranno a trovare una sistemazione nella vostra mente e saranno difficili da dimenticare.
“Quasimodo” rappresenta al meglio il lato Jazz Rock del gruppo, palesando un incedere cadenzato e ipnotico sopra al quale il violino si esprime al meglio gettando l’ascoltatore in pieni anni ’70. La composizione è complessa e articolata con atmosfere cupe e dinamiche cangianti.
L’uomo con la barba “Brodacz” in tre minuti invece, si focalizzata su tempi dispari e incastri ritmici serrati tra batteria e basso. La chitarra diventa protagonista con un assolo al fulmicotone e dialoga in botta e risposta con il violino. La brevissima title track conduce a “Krzaczek”, folle corsa nel Rock’n Roll sempre dallo stampo Jazz. Irresistibile all’ascolto, vedrete che vi ritroverete a muovere come minimo i piedi a tempo.
Più seriosa “Boy Friend”, impegnata fra synth sorretti da una ritmica pulita e presente.
Fra le mie preferite segnalo “Ładna pogoda w Sopocie”, tanto materiale storico a bagaglio, Qui ci sono concentrati anni di musica Jazz Rock.
“Adaś” è un'altra fuga strumentale che potrebbe benissimo uscire da un album dei Perigeo (con qualche scheggia di Area) per poi passare a “Wasz Beret”, quasi sette minuti di durata in cui la band sale veramente in cattedra seppur non risultando mai auto-compiacente. Forse il pezzo più Rock dell’intero album.
Chiudono due bonus track: ”Polowanie Na Leśniczego (Wersja II)” e “Krzaczek (Wersja II)”.
In conclusione, “Mechanizm” raccoglie l'essenza più pura, dinamica e strumentale dei Kwadrat. Tra riff affilati, tastiere d'epoca e un'interazione ritmica impeccabile, questo lavoro d'archivio dimostra come il sound della band di Katowice non abbia perso un solo grammo del suo fascino originale.
Musica senza tempo e una ottima occasione per scoprirli (o ri-scoprirli). MS

It is well known that music as a language has no borders, which is why it sometimes happens to listen to a musical genre that, even if not born in a specific country, is nonetheless represented at its best. This does not happen only with the advent of the internet, which has globalized much of music, giving everyone the opportunity to listen to a vast amount of material, but also back in the '70s, for example when the Jazz Rock of bands like Perigeo, Arti & Mestieri, Agorà (to name a few Italian ones) showcased their high caliber.
Poland has always been active in the Progressive Rock scene, just think of bands like Collage or Quidam, especially within Neo Prog, but there are surprises right around the corner. Thus, Kwadrat propose an instrumental Jazz Rock steeped in classicism and fine technique.
The album “Mechanizm” is a collection of archival recordings released by the specialized label Gad Records. It gathers the band's first studio tracks recorded for Polskie Radio Katowice at the beginning of their career (between the late '70s and early '80s), many of which were previously unreleased on CD or never published in their original format.
They were formed in Katowice towards the late '70s. Emerging within the Polish movement Muzyka Młodej Generacji (Music of the Young Generation), they came to prominence in 1979 during the Pop Session festival in Sopot.
Driven by intricate instrumental interplay, their style is characterized by virtuous guitar solos, tight time signature changes, and the distinctive use of keyboards and viola. Although the band released only one studio LP album at the time (“Polowanie Na Leśniczego” in 1981) and a 7" single for the Tonpress label, their archival work is recognized among the most fascinating chapters of the Eastern European fusion scene of the era.
The line-up consists of Teodor Danysz (keyboards), Ryszard Wegrzyn (guitar), Adam Otreba (guitar), Jacek Gazda (bass), Michal Giercuszkiewicz (drums), and Wieslaw Susfal (violin).
“Polowanie Na Leśniczego”, originally released as a single in 1979, is dominated by a sustained tempo, aggressive guitar riffs, and prominent bass work. A wealth of classicism in their background and a truly “European”, well-targeted choice of melodies. Excellent violin work. You will see that the musical movements will find a place in your mind and will be hard to forget.
“Quasimodo” best represents the Jazz Rock side of the group, displaying a cadenced and hypnotic stride over which the violin expresses itself at its best, casting the listener straight back into the full '70s. The composition is complex and articulated, featuring dark atmospheres and changing dynamics.
“The Man with the Beard” (“Brodacz”), in just three minutes, focuses instead on odd time signatures and tight rhythmic interlocks between drums and bass. The guitar takes center stage with a lightning-fast solo and engages in a call-and-response dialogue with the violin. The very short title track leads into “Krzaczek”, a wild ride into Rock’n Roll, still with a Jazz imprint. Irresistible to listen to, you'll find yourself at the very least tapping your feet to the beat.
More serious is “Boy Friend”, engaged among synths supported by a clean, present rhythm section.
Among my favorites, I would highlight “Ładna pogoda w Sopocie”, with so much historical material in its luggage. Years of Jazz Rock music are concentrated here.
“Adaś” is another instrumental flight that could easily come out of a Perigeo album (with a few splinters of Area), moving then to “Wasz Beret”, nearly seven minutes long, where the band truly steps up to the lectern without ever appearing self-indulgent. Perhaps the most Rock track of the entire album.
Closing the album are two bonus tracks: “Polowanie Na Leśniczego (Wersja II)” and “Krzaczek (Wersja II)”.
In conclusion, “Mechanizm” gathers the purest, most dynamic, and instrumental essence of Kwadrat. Between razor-sharp riffs, vintage keyboards, and flawless rhythmic interaction, this archival release proves how the Katowice band's sound hasn't lost a single gram of its original charm.
Timeless music and a great opportunity to discover (or re-discover) them. MS
