LAURA CATRANI – Vox In Femina
Stradivarius / Milano Dischi
Genere: Sperimentazione vocale
Supporto: CD – 2026

“Was Brauchst Du?
MS

Versione Inglese:

LAURA CATRANI – Vox In Femina
Stradivarius / Milano Dischi
Genre: Vocal experimentation
Format: CD – 2026

The voice, this instrument we carry around and use differently depending on the situation, can stir emotions, make us laugh, get angry, surprise… fall in love.
In the artistic sphere, the voice has always been paired with music, but above all with theater. Some have made experimental use of it: just look at the past of Antonin Artaud, Joan La Barbara, the ever-lamented Demetrio Stratos with his polyphonies, and many others. Even today, there are those who experiment in this realm, with names like Claudio Milano (Nickelodeon), John De Leo (Quintorigo), or Romina Daniele, who might sound new to the less experienced among you.
But successful experimentation does not exist without solid foundations and talent; it is an approach where a false step is always around the corner.
This is not the case for Laura Catrani, an Italian soprano recognized in the classical and contemporary music scene for her extraordinary vocal flexibility and dedication to twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire.
Having graduated with top marks from the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan, Laura Catrani has distinguished herself through a versatile concert and theatrical career, ranging from Baroque opera to avant-garde music. She has collaborated with internationally renowned festivals (such as the Venice Biennale Musica, the Milano Musica Festival, and the Ravenna Festival) and has been chosen by numerous contemporary composers for premieres and recordings dedicated to her.
This new album “Vox In Femina” is an album for solo voice in which the female voice is explored as a total instrument, freed from orchestral or piano accompaniment. The record builds an ideal bridge between the historical masterpieces of the solo voice repertoire and contemporary Italian production.
The journey begins with “Sequenza III (Luciano Berio)”, a 1966 masterpiece composed for Cathy Berberian. It is an exploration into the infinite possibilities of vocal emission: laughter, whispers, tongue clicks, murmurs, and pitched singing alternate in a virtuosic flow of sonic micro-events. Over nine minutes of pure theater of the voice! The brief text is based on a poetic module by Markus Kutter (“Give me a few words for a woman to sing...”), and is completely deconstructed and unstructured into phonemes, syllables, and breaths, losing its syntactical meaning to become pure acoustic and emotional matter.
Next comes “Gutta Cavat Lapidem (2021 - Leonardo Marino)”, where one can savor the importance of silences and pauses. Following this, Laura accompanies herself with two claves to produce percussive sounds. The title recalls the famous Latin proverb (“La goccia scava la pietra”). Musically, it translates into a structure based on repetition, vocal percussiveness, and the gradual wearing down of sound, where minimal, repeated vocal gestures transform the timbre over time. The voice takes advantage of the phonetics of hard consonants and short vowels to simulate the rhythmic impact of a water drop.
“To Whom (2009 - Alessandro Solbiati)” is instead a page of intense dramatic lyricism and timbral concentration. Solbiati works with expressive intervals, microtonality, and modulations of vocal color ranging from breathy emissions to peaks of sharpness.
And then comes a ten-minute mini-suite entitled “Le Bechete (2009 - Matteo Franceschini)”, sixteenth-century culinary recipes that turn into art (even if they often already are in themselves). A union between present and tradition where the voice becomes the main ingredient.
Solitude is addressed in “Jeder Mensch Trägt Ein Zimmer In Sich (2013 - Federico Gardella)”; the text is a famous aphorism by Franz Kafka (taken from the “Octavo Notebooks”). The German word is syllabified and fragmented to convey the sense of isolation and introspection. Laura articulates everything while also using operatic tones.
The singer’s more pronounced “soprano” side emerges during the diction of three short verses taken from the canticles of the “Divine Comedy”; the title is “Nel Lago, L'Ora, la Notte (2020 - Paolo Marchettini)”. Here, the fusion of literature and theatricality proves robust and effective.
There is also a fairytale moment, “La Vipera ( 2020 - Fabrizio De Rossi Re)”, inspired by a fantastical tale by Leonardo da Vinci. The phonetic usage ranges from childish vocalizations to angrier moments, immersed in an avant-garde lullaby in terms of pace and structure.
“Was Brauchst Du? (Daniela Fantechi)” stems instead from the text of the homonymous poem by the Austrian poet Friederike Mayröcker (1924 – 2021). Here the voice adapts perfectly to the poem itself, moving between timbral highs and lows. The album concludes with “Stripsody (1966 - Cathy Berberian)”, amid onomatopoeic sounds inspired by the world of comic books; Laura once again demonstrates a surprising and over-the-top vocal malleability.
The accompanying booklet is very beautiful and carefully crafted, complete with track-by-track descriptions and photographs of a very young Catrani in the 1980s taken by the Rimini photographer Guido Guidi.
“Vox In Femina” is a courageous and essential work that, moving with ease between the historical memory of the avant-garde and the sharpness of contemporary creation, succeeds in the rarest of feats: transforming acoustic experimentation into pure, visceral emotion. An essential listen for anyone who wants to understand where vocal music is headed today. MS
