CONSIDERAZIONI SUL PROGRESSIVE ROCK ITALIANO 2026

Avendo oltrepassato abbondantemente la metà dell’anno, tiriamo già alcune somme per ciò che concerne il genere musicale in questione, ossia il Progressive Rock Italiano e quello che ci orbita attorno.
Se seguite il mio blog, avrete già una vostra idea al riguardo, in quanto ho recensito davvero moltissime band; tuttavia mi sento di dover fare alcune considerazioni che, intendiamoci, sono un mio pensiero dettato dalla mia esperienza e quindi non la verità assoluta, quella la lascio agli “illuminati”.
Ebbene, nel primo arco che va da gennaio ad aprile/maggio, di uscite interessanti ce ne sono state, pur non tantissime rispetto agli anni passati. Posso fare un piccolo elenco non completo (il resto potrete sfogliarlo nel blog), giusto per dare un'idea:

Non grandi numeri, però diciamo che la qualità è buona.
Ciò che ho constatato a seguire nei mesi di giugno, luglio e agosto è molto preoccupante, anche se la storia ci ha insegnato che il genere Prog Rock Italiano ha sempre vissuto di alti e bassi d’interesse e che il periodo estivo rallenta le uscite, credo che questa volta il campanello d’allarme sia molto più acuto delle altre volte, e vi spiego il perché.
In definitiva sono passati tre mesi abbondanti senza uscite, a parte sporadici artisti! Questo, come detto, ci può stare, ma io a memoria (e ne avete prova nel blog) non ricordo un silenzio così lungo.
Bisogna analizzare questo dato, e sono giunto a delle conclusioni a partire dalle mode odierne, che limitano la musica a un “mordi e fuggi” dettato dalla velocità della vita a cui siamo sottoposti. La musica liquida conduce a un ascolto veloce e distratto, con canzoni brevi e globalizzate dall’avvento dell’IA. Non più lunghe suite, ma composizioni mediamente corte, perché la gente non ascolta più in quanto bombardata da migliaia di uscite quotidiane (e tutte uguali): basta vedere Spotify o Bandcamp. Il supporto dell'IA usato oggi da moltissimi artisti tende inoltre a standardizzare il suono a scapito della creatività.
Che la vendita dei dischi abbia la febbre lo si deduce anche dal fatto che le automobili di oggi non posseggono più un lettore CD o quant’altro, ma solo il modo di ascoltare musica attraverso i file (è un esempio).
Dicono che ci sia il ritorno al vinile, ma credetemi, questo fenomeno è relegato a persone che hanno una certa età; finite queste generazioni, la vendita dei dischi a seguire sarà sicuramente effimera. Quante famiglie di giovani oggi hanno un giradischi in casa?

Un'altra causa è dunque data dalla selezione naturale: gli amanti e autori di queste sonorità stanno via via passando a nuova vita per motivi anagrafici; di conseguenza vengono a mancare tanti fruitori, collezionisti compresi.
Per vostra curiosità vi riporto i dati del blog NONSOLO PROGROCK, per farvi capire meglio che età ha il pubblico che segue il Rock Progressivo Italiano. Dovete sapere che ad oggi la media di collegamenti al blog varia dai 5.000 ai 9.000 contatti giornalieri (e vi ringrazio!), per cui il dato è molto attendibile e ci fa da spia: il 15% dei visitatori ha meno di 30 anni, l’85% dai 40 in su, con un picco elevato fra i 50 e i 70.
È quindi fisiologico che ci siano sempre meno giovani ad approcciarsi a questa musica e, di conseguenza, anche a suonarla.
Un'altra conferma mi giunge dal pubblico dei festival in Italia ai quali in alcuni casi ho partecipato di persona e ho visto l’età anagrafica elevata.

Purtroppo quanto detto ci dimostra che il Rock Progressivo Italiano (come il Prog in generale) si va spegnendo inesorabilmente. Con questo non dico che tutto stia arrivando a una fine definitiva, ma soltanto che in futuro saranno in pochi a sostenere questa musica (salvo le solite mode, che hanno la durata di un gatto in autostrada).
Ora dobbiamo attenderci un autunno con più uscite, fra le quali vi anticipo già gli umbri IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA e i marchigiani AGORÀ. Sicuramente la macchina si rimetterà in moto soprattutto verso novembre, ma ciò nulla toglie alla constatazione di un buco preoccupante che, a mia memoria, non è mai stato così lungo.

Having well passed the middle of the year, let's draw some initial conclusions regarding the musical genre in question, namely Italian Progressive Rock and everything orbiting around it.
If you follow my blog, you will already have your own idea about this, as I have reviewed a vast number of bands; however, I feel the need to share a few considerations which, mind you, are just my personal thoughts shaped by my experience and therefore not the absolute truth—I leave that to the "enlightened."
Well, in the first phase spanning from January to April/May, there were some interesting releases, though not as many compared to past years. I can share a small, non-exhaustive list (you can browse the rest on the blog) just to give you an idea:

Not huge numbers, but let's say the quality is good.
What I have observed following that, in the months of June, July, and August, is very concerning. Although history has taught us that Italian Prog Rock has always lived through highs and lows of interest, and that the summer period slows down releases, I believe that this time the alarm bell is sounding much louder than usual, and I'll tell you why.
Ultimately, three full months have passed without any releases, aside from a few sporadic artists! This, as mentioned, can happen, but from memory (and you have proof on the blog), I do not recall such a prolonged silence.
This data needs to be analyzed, and I have arrived at some conclusions starting from modern trends, which reduce music to a "hit-and-run" affair driven by the fast pace of life we are subjected to. Digital streaming leads to fast, distracted listening, with short songs globalized by the advent of AI. No longer long suites, but average short compositions because people no longer truly listen, being bombarded by thousands of daily releases (and all sounding identical)—just look at Spotify or Bandcamp. The AI support used today by many artists also tends to standardize the sound at the expense of creativity.
That record sales are suffering is also evident from the fact that modern cars no longer feature a CD player or similar gear, offering only ways to listen to music via digital files (just as an example).
People say there is a vinyl comeback, but believe me, this phenomenon is restricted to people of a certain age; once these generations are gone, subsequent physical record sales will certainly be short-lived. How many young families today have a turntable at home?
Another cause is therefore natural selection: lovers and creators of these sounds are gradually passing on due to age; as a result, many listeners, including collectors, are fading away.
Out of curiosity, I am sharing the data from the blog NONSOLO PROGROCK to help you better understand the age profile of the audience following Italian Progressive Rock. You should know that today the average number of daily visits to the blog ranges between 5,000 and 9,000 hits (and I thank you!), making the data highly reliable and serving as a clear indicator: 15% of visitors are under 30 years old, 85% are 40 and above, with a significant peak between 50 and 70.
It is therefore natural that fewer and fewer young people are approaching this music and, consequently, playing it.
Unfortunately, what has been said shows us that Italian Progressive Rock (like Prog in general) is inexorably fading away. By this, I am not saying that everything is coming to a final end, but only that in the future, very few will sustain this music (apart from the usual temporary trends that last as long as a cat on a highway).
Now we should expect an autumn with more releases, among which I can already anticipate the Umbrian band IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA and AGORÀ from Marche. Surely the engine will restart, especially around November, but that does not lessen the realization of a worrying gap that, to my memory, has never been this long.
