MAURIZIO DI TOLLO – Come E’ Profondo Il Male
Ma.Ra.Cash Records
Genere: Cantautore / Progressive Rock
Supporto: CD / Digital – 2026

MAURIZIO DI TOLLO – Come E’ Profondo Il Male
Ma.Ra.Cash Records
Genre: Singer-Songwriter / Progressive Rock
Format: CD / Digital – 2026

In Italy, the singer-songwriter scene is currently changing, much like Progressive Rock, and when these two worlds collide, it is a rather unusual, if not rare, event. Maurizio Di Tollo has been a key and versatile figure in the Italian Progressive and singer-songwriter landscape from the 1990s to the present day. Mainly known as a refined drummer, percussionist, and multi-instrumentalist, he boasts a rich career filled with prestigious collaborations in both Prog Rock and Italian songcraft. He has played in bands such as Distillerie Di Malto, Fabio Zuffanti, La Maschera Di Cera, Moongarden, and many other projects.
His solo debut dates back to 2012 with the excellent “L’Uomo Trasparente”, followed by an equally successful release in 2015 with “Memorie Di Uno Sparring Partner”. Compared to his previous albums, “Come E’ Profondo Il Male” heightens a deep, bitter, and relentless lyrical component, probing the folds of the human soul, the neuroses of modern society, the decline of values, and individual solitude. The most knowledgeable among you will have noticed the nod to the title “Com’è Profondo Il Mare” by the immense and unforgettable Lucio Dalla—a reference that either hopes for similar success or simply serves as a point of connection with the singer-songwriter tradition; I leave that to speculation. The album features eleven tracks totaling nearly an hour of music. Along this journey, the author relies on the artistry of two other prominent figures in the field: Cristiano Roversi (Moongarden, Submarine Silence, Mangala Vallis) on keyboards and Erik Montanari (Noisy Diners, Il Porto Di Venere) on guitar.
The brief opening “Intro” is effective, capturing TV channel-zapping that stops on the famous 1969 film Nell’Anno Del Signore, where Pasquino, played by the great Nino Manfredi, confesses to his beloved that he is the one writing against the government and its abuses. This dialogue opens into “Trasparente”, a fierce slow track in which Di Tollo harshly analyzes contemporary society over a delicate guitar arpeggio that occasionally recalls the music of Ivano Fossati.
Sound effects step in with “Rassicurante”, as the tempo picks up, alternating mood shifts with sharp, profound lyrics. The structure is sophisticated and modern, enhanced by excellent keyboard arrangements.
Never cross a mechanic: the lyrics of “Il Messia Meccanico” border at times on sharp irony, while the track ventures into Progressive Rock with passages reminiscent of vintage Le Orme. The ending features an excerpt from an interview with Fabrizio De André, another luminary who is still dearly missed today…
“Comedians” is dedicated to an endless comedic actress, Monica Vitti. It is a poignant, high-class ballad where the vocal performance adds significant dramatic weight. Piano, guitar arpeggios, and woodwinds tie together harmoniously to deliver a captivating track with a vintage Italian flavor.
Then comes the Rock moment, complete with electric guitar, in “Bipolare”—a crescendo where the chorus takes center stage. Prog Rock moments are not lacking here either, especially during the guitar solo accompanied by keyboards.
With an intimate feel reminiscent of Gino Paoli, “La Voglia” opens as a bitter reflection on relationships and sex. It is another fierce ballad that lays bare the protagonist's scarred state of mind.
I leave the rest to your listening pleasure, as this sets the overall tone for the album, which culminates in the spectacular “Arido” and its truly captivating electric guitar solo.
Maurizio Di Tollo places as much emphasis on the lyrics as he does on the music—a complete work showing a modern stage of Italian songcraft bridging past, present, and future. It is an album that certainly does not leave you indifferent and makes you want to hit replay immediately, as each listen reveals a detail you had previously missed. MS
