Il fulcro dell’album tuttavia deriva dal trittico “Icicles Part I: The Circle”, “Icicles Part II: Peace” e “Icicles Part III: Out Of The Ice”, fra interventi vigorosi e innesti Neo Prog.
Piacevole. MS

Among the European nations most active in today's Prog scene, Germany certainly places just below the master, England. Many artists today release well-crafted albums; certainly, the internet and AI have greatly accelerated production workflows. For this reason, one often runs into one-man bands, as the most passionate among you will have noticed. However, there are artists who have been working in the field for a long time, such as Oliver Rüsing (all instruments) and his project Karibow.
Karibow was formed in Germany in the winter between 1996 and 1997. Originally conceived as a sextet, the project gradually evolved around the central figure of Rüsing, who handles almost all writing, vocals, and instruments (from guitars to keyboards, passing through bass and drums), often relying on guests and collaborators for live performances or specific solo sections.
Musically, the project fits into the Crossover Prog / Neo-Prog realm, characterized by strong melodic lines, solid and modern rhythms, layered keyboard arrangements, impactful guitar riffs, and a lyrical approach focused on inner dynamics, human psychology, and the contemporary socio-cultural context. The discography is extensive, consisting of sixteen studio albums including this latest release, “Ophelia”, supported by the collaboration of special guests such as Philipp Dauenhauer (guitars), Markus Savic (violin), and Andy Pendant (sax, trumpet, trombone, French horn). The album stands out for its crystal-clear production, atmospheric passages alternating with Canadian-inspired Rock guitar openings (showing a clear affinity with the sound of Saga), and rhythmic structures crafted in meticulous detail by Rüsing. Overall, it is very melodic and close to traditional song structures.
“Ophelia” opens with the inevitable “Overture”, here entrusted to layers of keyboards, choral textures, and synthesizers, which introduce the chromatic lines and harmonic motifs recurring throughout the album. These lead into the title track, a mid-tempo piece with building dynamics, featuring enveloping keyboards, electric guitar solos, and effective rhythmic breaks. The chorus is functional and easily memorable. The artist's sensitivity shines through every note.
The lyrics evoke the tragic and literary figure of Ophelia to explore emotional fragility, a sense of disorientation, and human vulnerability in the face of external pressure and relational difficulties. A more direct and upbeat track with an incisive melodic chorus is “On Higher Ground”, featuring a more positive and optimistic lyrical tone. It deals with the desire to rise above daily negativity, the background noise of modern society, and conspiracy-driven media manipulation, seeking a clearer perspective. Airy and direct, it is an absolute pleasure to listen to, bringing to mind certain passages from the 1980s.
“Unreal” is a ten-minute mini-suite that alternates intimate, dreamy moments with vigorous Rock sections where guitars take center stage with sudden time signature changes. The lyrics explore the thin line between reality and fantastical perception, the feeling of disconnect from reality, and the escape into one's own inner worlds of illusion.
The core of the album, however, stems from the triptych “Icicles Part I: The Circle”, “Icicles Part II: Peace”, and “Icicles Part III: Out Of The Ice”, blending powerful arrangements with Neo-Prog accents.
In conclusion, “Ophelia” is a journey into the fragilities and contradictions of modern man—a path that starts from disorientation to rediscover, step by step, a sense of grounding. Through balanced soundscapes rich in atmosphere, Karibow delivers a cohesive and inspired work capable of striking the right chords. Recommended listening for anyone who still appreciates refined Prog built on great melodies, history, and elegance. Enjoyable. MS
