ALEX MARI – Origins
Lethal Song / Atomic Stuff Promotion
Genere: Melodic Metal / Prog Metal
Supporto: Digital – 2026

ALEX MARI – Origins
Lethal Song / Atomic Stuff Promotion
Genre: Melodic Metal / Prog Metal
Format: Digital – 2026

Another musical genre that never sees the end of the line over time is Melodic Metal. Often walking hand in hand with AOR, or with Prog Metal, it has always known how to evoke strong emotions, especially through its catchy, memorable choruses. Excellent technical proficiency is also required to best present these compositions—a hallmark that defines Prog Metal.
Alex Mari is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from Ferrara, Italy, who has been active for years in the Italian and international Rock, Hard Rock, and Progressive scenes. He is the lead singer and frontman of the Progressive Rock band Barock Project and co-founder of the AOR/Melodic Rock outfit Night Pleasure Hotel. He has worked extensively as a backing vocalist and collaborator alongside Michele Luppi (Whitesnake, Vision Divine, Secret Sphere). In his live and studio work, he boasts performances and guest appearances with acts such as Secret Sphere, Markonee, and Ophiura.
With Origins, Alex delivers a work in which he personally handled vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, programming, and arrangements. Drums are played by Paolo Caridi (Michele Luppi, Reb Beach, Ellefson-Soto) and Gianluca "Mr. Pisu" Pisana (Night Pleasure Hotel), alongside guest appearances such as Igor Gallerani (Ophiura) on keyboards in “Resurrection”, Valentina Piccinini on vocals in “Visions”, Leonardo “Big Leo” on vocals in “Ancestral Whispers”, and Lisa Cavalieri D’Oro on vocals in “Forgotten”. The album was mixed and mastered by Roberto Priori at Pri Studio in Bologna.
In truth, this debut album stems from Alex's decision to revisit and transform the very first songs he wrote between the late '90s and early 2000s while playing in the bands O.D.U. and Ophiura. It is no mere reissue, but a full-fledged transformation. The tracks have been completely rearranged, re-recorded from scratch, and reinterpreted through a more mature sound—a return to origins, but without nostalgia.
With the introductions out of the way, let's move on to the music, which was preceded by three singles: “Resurrection”, “Aenigma”, and “Ancestral Whispers”.
It kicks off with “Back To The Origins Pt. 1”, an atmospheric and evocative intro where keyboards prepare the listener for the journey into the record. It continues with “Letters From Hell”, featuring a decisive Hard & Heavy punch driven by tight rhythms and aggressive guitar riffs. Alex's voice is the one already familiar to fans of the aforementioned bands—clean, versatile, and theatrical. The track is intended as an inner journey through the darkest moments of the soul, symbolically represented as "letters from hell," from which the desire to break the chains of one's own anxieties emerges.
Then comes the first single, “Resurrection”, melodic and built upon a Prog Metal structure, where the rhythm section delights in engaging variations. The lyrics center on the concept of redemption and personal rebirth: falling, hitting rock bottom, and finding the strength to rise again stronger than before.
The second single, “Aenigma”, is characterized by time signature changes, intricate keyboard layers, and articulate guitar work. Its strong point lies in the open, soaring chorus. It is a reflection on the mystery of existence and the answers humanity constantly seeks without ever finding an absolute truth, living suspended in doubt.
The third single, “Ancestral Whispers”, is a gorgeous, atmospheric, and deep ballad built around keyboard arrangements and arpeggiated guitars, enriched by a vocal duet with Leonardo Big Leo. Inspired by Brian Weiss's book Only Love Is Real (published in Italian as Molte Vite, Un Solo Amore), it explores the metaphysical concept of soulmates who continue to seek and find each other across different eras and lifetimes.
At this point, we plunge straight into the world of AOR with “Let Our Dreams Be Free”, where synths feature prominently and recall the classic '80s sound—an anthem to freedom of expression, the importance of pursuing one's aspirations, and refusing to be bound by social constraints.
“True Illusion” opens introspectively with guitar arpeggios, keyboards, and Alex's crystal-clear vocals, before the tempo picks up mid-track, diving full force into driving, well-arranged Melodic Metal topped with symphonic keyboards. Here, the ambiguous line between reality and digital or illusory perception is analyzed, highlighting how often we fall in love with masks or deceptive appearances.
One of the tracks I appreciated most is “Visions”; meticulous in every detail, it is complex and symphonic, where the Progressive DNA of Barock Project clearly shines through the arrangements and atmospheric shifts. Valentina Piccinini's guest vocals are the icing on the cake. It deals with the experience of dreams and visions as a key to interpreting reality—a moment when the subconscious reveals desires and fears kept quiet during the day.
An intimate and poignant track is “Forgotten”. The song is primarily built around piano and vocals in the first half, before rising into an emotional Rock crescendo led by a melancholy guitar solo. Driven by nostalgia and the pain of abandonment, it tells the story of feeling forgotten by the people or places that once felt like "home."
Then comes “I Am”, punchy enough and rhythmic, with prominent basslines and a pure, direct Hard Rock stamp. The lyrics are a bold, unfiltered declaration of identity: full acceptance of oneself, one's flaws, and one's story, without the need for excuses or external approval.
With “Apocalypse”, we reach the most epic and dark moment of the record, characterized by heavy riffs, majestic orchestrations, and dramatic, theatrical vocal lines. It serves as a metaphor for the decline of modern society, emotional isolation, and the necessity of a "cathartic" destruction in order to rebuild something genuine.
“Back To The Origins Pt. 2” conceptually closes the album by reprising the musical themes of the intro, expanding them into a Prog Rock-flavored instrumental suite that summarizes the album's tonal palette.
Also excellent is the bonus track “Sospiri Ancestrali”, an acoustic rendition of “Ancestral Whispers” re-sung in Italian, featuring guest vocals by Gianluca "Mr. Pisu" Pisana. It retains the theme of past lives and the unbreakable bond between souls, transposed into the musicality of the Italian language. Beautiful.
In conclusion, Origins is not merely a display of technical prowess or a simple showcase for Alex Mari's stellar vocal abilities, but a mature, visceral, and deeply sincere solo debut. It is a cohesive work that does not settle for merely quoting the great masters of the genre, but proudly claims its own identity, confirming Mari as one of the most versatile and interesting voices and minds in the contemporary Rock and Metal scene. A highly recommended listen not only for fans of Barock Project and his many collaborations, but for anyone still searching for music played with heart, gut, and undeniable, crystal-clear class.
