Amanti
Confusion Field intitolato “Resilience Remains”.
Confusion
Field è guidato dal polistrumentista, compositore e cantante finlandese Tomi
Kankeinen.
L'album esplora
Rimango
piacevolmente colpito in positivo dall’apertura dell’album “Maintain The
generato dalle incomprensioni pilotate.
Ci
Repentino
Immaginate
ora di unire la New Wave al Metal, il risultato è “The Echo Collector”, a cui
non mancano neppure incursioni nel Neo Prog!
“Restricted
MS

To all fans of Steven Wilson and company, here is the
return of the Finnish project Confusion Field titled “Resilience Remains”.
Confusion Field is led by Finnish
multi-instrumentalist, composer, and singer Tomi Kankeinen. Hailing from Oulu,
Kankeinen boasts a long journey in the Finnish music scene, with a background
spanning Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, and Synth-Pop, which eventually merged into
his natural inclination towards Modern Post Prog.
Joined by drummer Jani "Inkeri" Aho and
keyboardist/producer Petteri Claesson, the project was born with the intention
of blending the rhythmic impact and guitar textures of New Prog/Prog Metal (in
the vein of Porcupine Tree, Riverside, and Steven Wilson) with modern
synthesizer arrangements, synthesizing melody and punchy energy.
“Resilience Remains” is their third studio album
following the excellent “Disconnection Complete” (2021) and “Future Impact Of
Past Diversions” (2023), both highly praised by critics and fans alike (you can
find proof on Prog Archives). The album explores existential and psychological
themes such as inner resilience, modern alienation, information overload, and
the search for identity in the face of collective chaos.
I am pleasantly impressed by the album's opening
track, “Maintain The Uncertainty”, which, besides being the first single, is a
fusion of sounds borrowed from the past and expanded in the present, infused
with a flavor typical of Wilson. The structure alternates between atmospheric,
subtle moments—guided by Kankeinen's clean and expressive vocals—and impactful
bursts featuring fluid, well-balanced guitar solos. The lyrics address
uncertainty as a necessary state of existence. Rather than seeking dogmatic
certainties or easy answers, the song invites us to "embrace doubt",
seen as the only real tool to keep an open mind and avoid social control.
Meticulously arranged, the second single “Conjuring
Conflict” features a genuinely catchy chorus alongside an airy yet energetic
drive. It serves as a reflection on the polarization of human relationships and
the tendency of modern media and society to "conjure conflict" for
profit or control. The text describes the constant friction generated by
engineered misunderstandings.
Modern Post Prog also thrives on melancholic moods
(Riverside, for instance, built a career on them), and that is certainly the
case with “Sea Of Irrelevance”. Starting with clean guitar and spacey keyboard
effects, it builds into an emotional crescendo supported by a deep, pulsing
bassline. It captures the anxiety of feeling submerged in a "sea of
irrelevance", where the background noise of daily life and the digital
world threatens to erase the value and memory of individual human actions. And
speaking of Steven Wilson, give “Blame Gravity” a listen.
Some tracks lean closer to a direct song format, such
as “Is That All?”, an open question about the sense of fulfillment. Once
certain goals are achieved or specific obstacles overcome, one wonders if life
is reduced to just this or if a higher level of awareness exists.
A sudden shift in direction brings almost
Cyberpunk/Industrial Progressive shades in “A New Code”: the need to rewrite
one's own moral and emotional "code" to survive in a rapidly changing
world. A theme of rebirth and inner reprogramming to break harmful old
patterns.
Now imagine combining New Wave with Metal: the result
is “The Echo Collector”, which even features touches of Neo Prog!
“Restricted Area” and the closing track “Graceful
Deceit” wrap up the album at its best. Here, the graceful deceit
("Graceful Deceit") represents the constant illusion of control we
build around ourselves. The lyrics emphasize that, despite illusions and falls,
what ultimately endures is resilience itself (Resilience Remains).
With “Resilience Remains”, Confusion Field do not
attempt to revolutionize the standards of modern Progressive Rock, but they
demonstrate extraordinary maturity in handling the genre. I personally enjoyed
numerous passages that allowed my imagination to soar, and for me, that is more
than enough. MS
