Il Progressive Metal dalle tinte fosche è un genere che sta guadagnando sempre più spazio, specialmente dopo l’affermazione di band come Opeth, Soen, Porcupine Tree e Tool (nella loro sfaccettatura più metallica alla "Deadwing"). Queste realtà arricchiscono un panorama che, in passato, era territorio indiscusso delle sonorità tecniche e sinfoniche dei Dream Theater.
Si delinea così uno scenario differente, il cui fascino cresce grazie all'apporto culturale di formazioni non nordiche. Un esempio eccellente sono i bolognesi Inner Vitriol, capaci di infondere nel contesto la nostra mediterraneità e la tradizione del Prog italiano.
Il gruppo nasce nel 2007 da un'idea di Francesco Lombardo (basso) e Michele Panepinto (batteria) con il nome originario di Vitriol. Le loro composizioni presentano un'abbondanza di tempi complessi e virtuosismi jazzistici, alternando passaggi rilassanti a momenti decisamente pesanti. Dopo la pubblicazione di un EP omonimo nel 2010 e dell’album "Into The Silence I Sink" nel 2012,  incentrato sui temi del silenzio e dell'incomunicabilità, la formazione odierna vede l'innesto di Gabriele Gozzi (voce) e Michele Di Lauro (chitarra).
"Semper Tacui" è un concept album composto da sei brani e impreziosito da due ospiti d'eccezione: Andy Kuntz, cantante dei Vanden Plas, e Geoff Tate, leggendario frontman degli storici Queensrÿche. L'opera è focalizzata sul tempo, inteso come una forza inarrestabile e a tratti violenta, come suggerito dal singolo "Waterfall", in cui lo scorrere cronologico non è un fiume, ma una cascata scoscesa.
La produzione del disco è estremamente curata, i suoni nitidi permettono di distinguere ogni sfumatura del basso spesso dinamico e protagonista, e delle trame chitarristiche. La voce di Gabriele Gozzi rappresenta uno dei punti di forza dell'ensemble, versatile e naturale, l'interprete passa con disinvoltura da toni caldi e confidenziali a momenti di grande potenza.
"Broken And Dragged" introduce l’ascoltatore nelle atmosfere dell’album in soli tre minuti, evidenziando immediatamente le capacità compositive del combo e traghettando verso "On A Cold Floor". Quest'ultimo brano, della durata di quasi dieci minuti e arricchito dalla voce di Andy Kuntz, colpisce duramente per intensità e pressione emotiva.
Il singolo "Waterfall" abbraccia la scena con delicatezza e profondità d’intenti, offrendo un esempio lampante dell'evoluzione del genere attraverso il DNA mediterraneo. Successivamente, "Weaker And Fading" aggiunge dinamicità ritmica con tempi spezzati, pur mantenendo quel cantato sussurrato caratteristico della band. L’intervento di Geoff Tate, in questo frangente, è da brividi.
Ancor più profonda risulta "Upon The First Ray Of My Last Sun", vero climax emotivo che porta a compimento il viaggio introspettivo iniziato con le prime tracce. Il titolo stesso, una potente antitesi, suggerisce un’epifania finale, quell'istante di estrema lucidità che precede la fine di una fase vitale o di un’esistenza. Musicalmente, il pezzo riflette una sensazione di "fine imminente ma gloriosa", sostenuta da un lavoro di basso e batteria fondamentale che funge da battito cardiaco. Se negli altri brani emerge la lotta contro il tempo, qui regna una forma di pace tragica e la consapevolezza che ogni ciclo debba chiudersi per acquisire senso.
"I See The Flames" rappresenta il crollo finale, l'incendio che divora i resti. Concludere un album denso come "Semper Tacui" non era semplice, ma questa traccia riesce a trasformare la malinconia in un'energia distruttiva e, paradossalmente, purificatrice. Le chitarre abbandonano le aperture melodiche per farsi spesse e ossessive, con richiami quasi Dark Thrash che comunicano l'urgenza del titolo.
In definitiva, "Semper Tacui" è un disco che richiede ascolti ripetuti per essere compreso appieno. Non è "musica di sottofondo", ma un cammino sonoro che esige attenzione e partecipazione emotiva. Attraverso questo mix di sonorità passate e moderne, l’Italia dimostra di essere protagonista assoluta del Progressive Metal attuale e non una semplice comprimaria. MS

Dark-tinged Progressive Metal is a genre that is steadily gaining ground, especially following the rise of bands such as Opeth, Soen, Porcupine Tree, and Tool (specifically in their heavier facet, reminiscent of "Deadwing"). These acts enrich a landscape that was previously the undisputed territory of the technical and symphonic sounds of Dream Theater.
This shift presents a different scenario, whose appeal grows thanks to the cultural contribution of non-Northern formations. An excellent example is the Bologna-based Inner Vitriol, capable of infusing the context with our Mediterranean essence and the Italian Prog tradition.
The group was formed in 2007 from an idea by Francesco Lombardo (bass) and Michele Panepinto (drums), originally under the name Vitriol. Their compositions feature an abundance of complex time signatures and jazz-influenced virtuosity, alternating between relaxing passages and decidedly heavy moments. Following the release of a self-titled EP in 2010 and the 2012 album "Into The Silence I Sink", which focused on themes of silence and the inability to communicate, the current lineup is completed by Gabriele Gozzi (vocals) and Michele Di Lauro (guitar).
"Semper Tacui" is a concept album consisting of six tracks and enhanced by two exceptional guests: Andy Kuntz, lead singer of Vanden Plas, and Geoff Tate, the legendary frontman of the historic Queensrÿche. The work is focused on time, understood as an unstoppable and at times violent force, as suggested by the single "Waterfall," where the chronological flow is not a river, but a steep waterfall.
The production of the record is extremely refined; the crisp sounds allow every nuance of the bass, often dynamic and prominent, and the guitar textures to be distinguished. Gabriele Gozzi’s voice represents one of the ensemble's strengths; versatile and natural, the performer moves effortlessly from warm, intimate tones to moments of great power.
"Broken And Dragged" introduces the listener to the album's atmosphere in just three minutes, immediately highlighting the combo's compositional skills and leading into "On A Cold Floor." This latter track, lasting nearly ten minutes and enriched by Andy Kuntz's vocals, hits hard with its intensity and emotional pressure.
The single "Waterfall" embraces the scene with delicacy and depth of intent, offering a clear example of how the genre is evolving through our Mediterranean DNA. Subsequently, "Weaker And Fading" adds rhythmic dynamism with broken tempos, while maintaining the whispered vocals characteristic of the band. Geoff Tate’s intervention in this passage is spine-tingling.
Even more profound is "Upon The First Ray Of My Last Sun," a true emotional climax that completes the introspective journey begun with the opening tracks. The title itself, a powerful antithesis, suggests a final epiphany: that instant of extreme clarity preceding the end of a life phase or an existence. Musically, the piece reflects a sensation of an "imminent but glorious end," supported by essential bass and drum work that functions as a heartbeat. While a struggle against time emerges in other tracks, here a form of tragic peace reigns, along with the realization that every cycle must close to acquire meaning.
"I See The Flames" represents the final collapse, the fire that devours the remains. Closing an album as dense as "Semper Tacui" was no simple feat, but this track succeeds by transforming melancholy into a destructive and, paradoxically, purifying energy. The guitars abandon melodic openings to become thick and obsessive, with near-Dark Thrash echoes that communicate the urgency of the title.
Ultimately, "Semper Tacui" is a record that requires repeated listens to be fully understood. It is not "background music," but a sonic journey that demands attention and emotional involvement. Through this mix of past and modern sounds, Italy fully demonstrates its role as a leading protagonist in today's Progressive Metal scene, rather than a mere bystander. MS
