Molti ascoltatori disdegnano il suono Hard o Metal perché ritenuto limitato e troppo “rumoroso”; non sono mie parole, ma un dato di fatto constatato nel tempo leggendo riviste e navigando nel web. Questo giudizio è superficiale perché, se vogliamo parlare di gusti personali, allora concordo sul fatto che possa non piacere il suono elettrico e spesso distorto; ma se parliamo di tecnica, allora c’è un errore di fondo. L’Hard non è mai rimasto fermo a crogiolarsi sugli allori, bensì si è aperto a contaminazioni che lo hanno avvicinato (soprattutto per l’uso delle tastiere) al Progressive Rock. Il discorso è analogo per il Metal, il Death Metal, il Doom e così via.
Proprio quest’ultimo stile è il territorio in cui navigano L’Ira Del Baccano, band che oggi con “The Praise Of Folly” giunge al quinto album ufficiale in studio. La scelta di comporre musica senza un cantato li relega in un settore ancor più di nicchia, lasciando voce soltanto agli strumenti.
Rispetto all’ultimo album del 2023, intitolato “Cosmic Evoked Potentials”, c’è un avvicendamento al basso: Gabriele Montemara prende il posto di Ivan Contini Bacchisio. Per il resto le basi rimangono le stesse: i leader Alessandro Santori (chitarre, loop, synth) e Roberto Maldera (chitarre, effetti, chitarra slide, synth), con Gianluca Giannasso (batteria).
Penetrare nel Doom Prog della band significa fare un vero e proprio trip sonoro; so bene che questo termine è alquanto inflazionato, però è la verità dei fatti.
Il disco è impreziosito dalla bellissima copertina di Michele Carnielli ed è stato masterizzato da Claudio Gruer presso il Pisi Studio. Da notare che gli strumenti principali sono stati registrati live in una sola ripresa.
Ma veniamo alla musica: il lato A dell’LP contiene un solo brano suddiviso in due parti, “The Praise Of Folly”, per una durata totale di ventuno minuti. Ciò che prevale è l’oscurità che grava spesso sopra il nostro immaginario, rapito dall’ascolto. Suoni profondi che si alternano a parti maggiormente elettriche, deformate in differenti stili e forme, rilasciano buoni riff che richiamano alla mente, nei tratti più Hard, i fasti dei grandi Black Sabbath. Se vogliamo parlare di influenze, aggiungerei i Pink Floyd per i tratti maggiormente spaziali assieme agli Hawkwind, e poi Rush e King Buffalo. Ottimo il lavoro della sezione ritmica, spesso ipnotica ma altamente raffinata e tecnica.
Il lato B contiene due brani: “Stigma” e “Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead”. Quest’ultimo è un lamento doloroso, dove il mondo sembra sparire da sotto i piedi per sprofondare nel buio infinito: una sensazione che raramente si prova, se non negli incubi notturni. Tuttavia, trattandosi di Hard Prog, non mancano schiarite e cambi di tempo.
L’Ira Del Baccano, agli esordi, fu scoperta dal maestro del Doom Paolo Catena (ex Death SS), con il quale produssero un mini-LP con il nome primordiale di Loosin’ o’ Frequencies. Il bravo chitarrista ci vide lungo già allora, così come fece con l’altra band Prog, gli A Piedi Nudi, che vi consiglio di andare a scoprire.
Detto questo, “The Praise Of Folly” è l'ennesimo tassello importante non soltanto per la loro discografia, ma per tutto il panorama italico, il quale in questo 2026 sta già dando moltissime soddisfazioni. Un gran disco che sa rapirti la mente! MS

Many listeners disdain Hard or Metal sounds because they consider them limited and too "noisy"; these are not my words, but a fact observed over time by reading magazines and browsing the web. This judgment is superficial because, while I agree that one might not personally like electric and often distorted sounds, there is a fundamental error when it comes to technique. Hard Rock has never sat idly by, resting on its laurels; instead, it has opened up to influences that have brought it closer to Progressive Rock (especially through the use of keyboards). The same applies to Metal, Death Metal, Doom, and so on.
This latter style is precisely the territory navigated by L’Ira Del Baccano, a band that now reaches its fifth official studio album with “The Praise Of Folly”. The choice to compose music without vocals relegates them to an even narrower niche, letting only the instruments speak.
Compared to their 2023 album, “Cosmic Evoked Potentials”, there is a change on bass: Gabriele Montemara takes over from Ivan Contini Bacchisio. Otherwise, the foundation remains the same: leaders Alessandro Santori (guitars, loops, synth) and Roberto Maldera (guitars, effects, slide guitar, synth), with Gianluca Giannasso (drums).
Delving into the band’s Doom Prog means taking a literal "sonic trip"; I am well aware that this term is somewhat overused, but it is the simple truth. The record is enhanced by Michele Carnielli's beautiful cover art and was mastered by Claudio Gruer at Pisi Studio. It is worth noting that the main instruments were recorded live in a single take.
But let’s get to the music: Side A of the LP contains a single track divided into two parts, “The Praise Of Folly”, with a total duration of twenty-one minutes. What prevails is a darkness that often looms over our imagination, captivated by the listening experience. Deep sounds alternating with more electric sections—deformed into different styles and shapes—release solid riffs that bring to mind the glory of the great Black Sabbath in the heavier passages. If we want to talk about influences, I would add Pink Floyd for the more "spacey" sections along with Hawkwind, followed by Rush and King Buffalo. The work of the rhythm section is excellent—often hypnotic, yet highly refined and technical.
Side B contains two tracks: “Stigma” and “Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead”. The latter is a sorrowful lament, where the world seems to disappear from under your feet only to sink into infinite darkness: a sensation rarely felt outside of nocturnal nightmares. However, since this is Hard Prog, there is no shortage of "clearings" and time signature changes.
In their early days, L’Ira Del Baccano was discovered by Doom master Paolo Catena (ex-Death SS), with whom they produced a mini-LP under the original name Loosin’ o’ Frequencies. The talented guitarist showed great foresight back then, just as he did with the other Prog band A Piedi Nudi, which I recommend you check out.
That said, “The Praise Of Folly” is yet another important piece—not just for their discography, but for the entire Italian scene, which is already proving to be highly rewarding in this year 2026. A great record that knows how to seize your mind! MS
