Non credevo potesse esistere il caos ordinato, o almeno questo è quanto la mia mente ha sentenziato alla fine dell’ascolto di "In Absentia".
Giuseppe Petrucci, in arte Instant Curtain, è un polistrumentista, compositore e docente maceratese, amante del Jazz sperimentale e della musica da vivere più che da ascoltare. Nel 2020 ha esordito discograficamente con "Let Tear Us Apart", un disco apprezzato dalla critica e vicino alla Scuola di Canterbury di Robert Wyatt, realizzato insieme a Fabrizio Paggi, Carlo Maria Marchionni e Massimo Gerini. Tre anni dopo il gruppo ha replicato con il buon "State Of Art", ma con questo nuovo lavoro “In Absentia”, il passo si rivolge decisamente verso un sentiero più tortuoso: quello del Jazz Rock sperimentale, dove ogni brano viene frantumato e ricomposto come in un puzzle.
Non troverete melodie da memorizzare o da canticchiare; al loro posto ci sono fughe, ricerca e continui stop & go nelle otto tracce che compongono l'opera.
Classificare un pezzo come "Absent" non è impresa semplice: ricorda le schegge impazzite dei Machine Mole, dove il tema tenta di apparire per poi essere spezzato da intermezzi di basso e chitarra nervosa in stile King Crimson. Sebbene sembri che ogni strumento proceda per una strada propria, in realtà i musicisti dialogano costantemente, come se le note fossero voci umane anziché elementi fisici. La materia proposta oscilla tra dissolvenze e improvvise accelerazioni.
"Dance" supera gli undici minuti di durata, un tempo in cui ci si può smarrire, ma lungo il cammino si incontrano intenzionalità care ai nostrani Area che restituiscono qualcosa di familiare: è la logica non convenzionale al servizio del suono.
All’inizio di "Dualità", gli strumenti diventano quasi oggetti: il piano sgocciola note e la chitarra viene pizzicata e battuta sopra percussioni di fondo. Il movimento prosegue a singhiozzi, destabilizzando l’ascoltatore e privandolo di ogni certezza, mentre nella sezione ritmica di Luca e Andrea Mei si palesa un affiatamento totale.
"Giardino Magnetico" accenna a una struttura melodica che però svanisce dopo pochi istanti, riassorbita dalla densità dei suoni; sembra di ascoltare i Gentle Giant intenti a improvvisare liberamente.
In "In-Out" sono invece i King Crimson a suggerire la medesima direzione. Se "Introspetto" è un vero e proprio nomen omen, il pezzo maggiormente prossimo a una linea armonica è "Linee Ininterrotte Verso Il Punto Di Discrimine".
In chiusura, la suite "Transiti Liminali" racchiude tutto quanto narrato finora.
"In Absentia" è un’esperienza più che un album di canzoni, un viaggio dove l’ascoltatore deve essere pronto a lasciarsi trascinare da strumenti che sembrano godere di vita propria. Chi ha il coraggio si faccia avanti… Buona esperienza! MS

I didn’t believe "ordered chaos" could exist, or at least that is what my mind concluded after listening to "In Absentia." Giuseppe Petrucci, performing as Instant Curtain, is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and teacher from Macerata with a passion for experimental jazz and music meant to be experienced rather than merely heard. In 2020, he made his recording debut with "Let Tear Us Apart"—critically acclaimed and reminiscent of the Canterbury Scene and Robert Wyatt—alongside Fabrizio Paggi, Carlo Maria Marchionni, and Massimo Gerini. Three years later, the group followed up with the solid "State Of Art," but with this new work, "In Absentia," they take a turn toward a much more tortuous path: that of experimental Jazz Rock, where every track is shattered and reassembled like a puzzle.
You won’t find melodies to memorize or hum along to; instead, there are flights of exploration, sonic research, and constant stop-and-go rhythms across the eight tracks. Classifying a piece like "Absent" is no simple feat: it brings to mind the frantic fragments of Machine Mole, where a theme attempts to emerge only to be broken by nervous bass and guitar interludes in the vein of King Crimson. Although it seems as though each instrument is following its own path, the musicians are in constant dialogue, as if the notes were human voices rather than physical elements. The material oscillates between atmospheric fades and sudden accelerations.
"Dance" clocks in at over eleven minutes—a duration in which one can easily get lost—but along the way, you encounter intentionalities reminiscent of Italy’s own Area, providing a sense of familiarity. This is unconventional logic at the service of sound. At the beginning of "Dualità," the instruments almost become physical objects: the piano drips notes while the guitar is plucked and struck over background percussion. The movement proceeds in fits and starts, destabilizing the listener and stripping away all certainty, while the total synergy of the rhythm section, Luca and Andrea Mei, becomes strikingly evident.
"Giardino Magnetico" hints at a melodic structure that vanishes after just a few moments, reabsorbed into the density of the sound; it feels like listening to Gentle Giant improvising freely. In "In-Out," it is King Crimson who suggest a similar direction. While "Introspetto" is a true nomen omen, the piece closest to a harmonic line is "Linee Ininterrotte Verso Il Punto Di Discrimine." In closing, the suite "Transiti Liminali" encapsulates everything narrated so far. "In Absentia" is an experience rather than an album of songs—a journey where the listener must be ready to be swept away by instruments that, in many passages, seem to possess a life of their own.
