Nel percorso della vita, ognuno di noi avverte prima o poi il bisogno di tirare le somme per proseguire il cammino con un bagaglio di esperienze consolidate. Quale modo migliore per farlo se non attraverso un “Diario Di Bordo”?
In questo lavoro, Gianmaria Zanier ha molto da raccontare, e lo fa con la profondità che appartiene alla sua caratura artistica. L'eclettismo, la preparazione tecnica e l'amore per il Progressive Rock sono in lui fuori dal comune. Una passione che lo vede anche protagonista nell'etere con il seguitissimo programma radiofonico “Prog & Dintorni” su Radio Vertigo One, oltre che nel ruolo di amministratore dell'omonimo gruppo Facebook.
Dal 2000, il polistrumentista, cantante e insegnante frequenta assiduamente la scena live, entrando in contatto con una lista sterminata di musicisti che lo hanno reso una figura nota nel panorama Prog. In questo “Diario Di Bordo” confluiscono vissuti, amicizie ed emozioni: un lungo vademecum musicale composto da ben ventidue tracce, realizzate in collaborazione con nomi illustri come Lino Vairetti (Osanna), Gigi Venegoni (Venegoni & Co), Piero Mortara (Arti+Mestieri), Sergio Lorandi e Silvano Silva, oltre alla partecipazione degli stessi Osanna e dei Phoenix Again.
L'album si può suddividere in due sezioni ideali: la prima, più cantautoriale e diretta, vanta ottimi arrangiamenti; la seconda, a partire da “Interludio”, si fa prevalentemente strumentale e progressiva.
In apertura troviamo “Il Punto Della Situazione”, un brano da cantare insieme a Gianmaria, semplice ma sostenuto con efficacia dalle tastiere e da un pregevole assolo di chitarra elettrica. Nel corso dell'ascolto emergono richiami alla PFM e a Zuffanti. Dedicata alla memoria di Antonio Lorandi, bassista dei Phoenix Again, è invece “Energia Nuova Da Bruciare”, presente anche in una versione live registrata con gli storici Osanna durante il concerto al “Porretta Prog Legacy” l'11 luglio 2025. Qui Zanier dimostra un'innata capacità nel creare melodie gradevoli con naturalezza e gioia contagiosa. Discorso analogo per “Amare… Soffrire… Gioire…”, proposta sia in studio che dal vivo con i Phoenix Again (registrata alla “Casa Di Alex” di Milano il 30 marzo 2019), traccia dotata di una carica energetica intensa e di un mix stilistico che rimanda a Lucio Battisti e Pino Daniele.
L'atmosfera si fa più elettrica in “Nel Bene E Nel Male”, mentre “Rinascendo Ora Per Ora” chiude la prima parte del disco con un'apertura sonora solare ed elegante. “L’Interludio” funge da passaggio cinematico e strumentale, mostrando una veste differente di GMZ che ci introduce a “Il Prezzo Da Pagare”, dove le tastiere citano i Genesis del periodo d'oro. Articolato ma ponderato, il brano è ricco di cambi di atmosfera; è qui che emerge l'anima Prog dell'artista, capace di filtrare la storia del genere attraverso la propria personalità.
“A.P.S.” è un altro breve stacco strumentale caratterizzato da un ottimo movimento di basso, che accompagna a “Tutto Sommato, Va Bene Così…”, brano dominato dalla chitarra acustica in un incedere bucolico dal sapore anni '70. Si prosegue con sfumature Jazz Rock nella bellissima “In Continuo Movimento”, per poi tuffarsi nel Prog storico con “Stile Libero (Parte 1 e Parte 2)”, tra suggestioni alla King Crimson e momenti vicini alla Scuola di Canterbury (Caravan). Zanier stupisce ancora una volta per versatilità in “Tentativo Di Fuga”.
Ci si avvia verso la conclusione con lo strumentale “Outsider”, costruito su un armonioso giro di tastiere. Un altro momento raffinato è offerto da “Ombre Cinesi”, seguito da “Catarsi (Parte 1)”, dove la chitarra elettrica tesse trame melodiche protagoniste. È un Progressive dalle velate sfumature malinconiche che richiama certe sonorità nordiche o i passaggi più pacati dei Goblin.
“Uscita Di Sicurezza – Catarsi (Parte 2)” si apre con il basso per lanciarsi in una fuga sonora tipica del Prog italico anni '70, mentre il pianoforte detta il ritmo in “Virus”, composizione che ben si presterebbe a una colonna sonora cinematografica.
Il disco si conclude con la breve “Energia Nuova Da Bruciare (Ripresa Strumentale)”.
“Diario Di Bordo” è un'opera che sorprende per freschezza e ricchezza di idee, testimoniando l'amore di Zanier per un genere in cui si muove con assoluta disinvoltura. C'è tanta storia in queste note.
Un disco speciale per un uomo altrettanto speciale. Da avere. MS

In the journey of life, everyone eventually feels the need to take stock of their experiences before moving forward. What better way to do so than through a “Diario Di Bordo” (Logbook)?
In this work, Gianmaria Zanier has much to recount, and he does so with the depth expected of an artist of his caliber. His eclecticism, technical mastery, and love for Progressive Rock are truly extraordinary. This passion also leads him to host the popular radio show “Prog & Dintorni” on Radio Vertigo One, as well as managing the namesake Facebook group.
Since 2000, the multi-instrumentalist, singer, and teacher has been a fixture at live concerts, connecting with a vast array of musicians that has made him a well-known figure across the scene. “Diario Di Bordo” gathers these life experiences, friendships, and emotions into a long musical handbook consisting of twenty-two tracks. The album features collaborations with renowned artists such as Lino Vairetti (Osanna), Gigi Venegoni (Venegoni & Co), Piero Mortara (Arti+Mestieri), Sergio Lorandi, and Silvano Silva, alongside contributions from the bands Osanna and Phoenix Again.
The record can be ideally divided into two parts: the first is more songwriter-oriented and direct, featuring excellent arrangements; the second, starting from “Interludio”, is more instrumental and Progressive-focused.
The album opens with “Il Punto Della Situazione”, a track designed to be sung along with Gianmaria—simple yet effectively supported by keyboards and a fine electric guitar solo. Throughout the listen, one can hear echoes of PFM and Zuffanti. “Energia Nuova Da Bruciare” is dedicated to the memory of Antonio Lorandi, the late bassist of Phoenix Again; the album also includes a live version performed with the legendary band Osanna during their concert at “Porretta Prog Legacy” on July 11, 2025. Here, Zanier displays an innate ability to craft pleasant melodies with naturalness and infectious joy. A similar vibe is found in “Amare… Soffrire… Gioire…”, presented in both studio and live versions (the latter recorded with Phoenix Again at Milan’s “Casa Di Alex” on March 30, 2019), a track charged with intense energy and a stylistic blend reminiscent of Lucio Battisti and Pino Daniele.
“Nel Bene E Nel Male” takes a more electric turn, while “Rinascendo Ora Per Ora” closes the first half of the record with an elegant and bright sonic opening. “L’Interludio” serves as a cinematic instrumental bridge, revealing a different side of GMZ that leads into “Il Prezzo Da Pagare”, where the keyboards evoke vintage Genesis. Complex yet balanced, the track is rich with atmospheric shifts, showcasing the artist's Prog roots and his ability to filter the genre’s history through his own personality.
“A.P.S.” is another brief instrumental featuring a great bass groove that leads into “Tutto Sommato, Va Bene Così…”, where the acoustic guitar takes center stage in a bucolic, 70s-PFM style. The album dips into smooth Jazz Rock with the beautiful “In Continuo Movimento” before diving deep into classic Prog with “Stile Libero (Parte 1 e Parte 2)”, echoing King Crimson and moments of the Canterbury Scene (Caravan). Zanier surprises once again with his versatility in “Tentativo Di Fuga”.
The finale approaches with the instrumental “Outsider”, driven by a melodic keyboard progression. Another refined piece, “Ombre Cinesi”, leads to “Catarsi (Parte 1)”, where the electric guitar weaves the main melodies. This is Progressive Rock with subtle melancholic undertones, reminiscent of certain Nordic bands or the more atmospheric moments of Goblin.
“Uscita Di Sicurezza – Catarsi (Parte 2)” opens with the bass before launching into a 70s-style "fuga" typical of Italian Progressive Rock. Finally, the piano dictates the rhythm in “Virus”, a track that could easily serve as a film soundtrack.
The journey concludes with the brief “Energia Nuova Da Bruciare (Ripresa Strumentale)”. This album surprises with its wealth of ideas and freshness, making it clear that Zanier is perfectly at home in the Prog world. There is so much history packed into these notes.
