Siamo stati tutti bambini, capaci di guardare il mondo con una prospettiva ricca di meraviglia e desiderio di scoperta. Crescendo, tendiamo a smarrire la purezza di quelle sensazioni sincere; sarebbe invece prezioso poter recuperare quella capacità di stupirsi.
Paolo Pagliari (voce, chitarre, basso, percussioni, tastiere) esplora questo tema attraverso un concept album denso di emozioni. Sebbene “Through The Eyes Of A Child” sia il suo esordio solista, non siamo di fronte a un esordiente: Pagliari è infatti, insieme a Gabriel Kiss, l'anima della band marchigiana The Old Castle, con cui ha inciso “Working Travellers”, “Storie Nascoste” (2001) e “Wistful” (2022). Musicoterapeuta con alle spalle numerose esperienze tra progetti pubblicitari e tribute band (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin e Pink Floyd), l'artista riversa qui tutto il suo bagaglio culturale.
In questo scrigno emotivo, Pagliari si avvale della collaborazione dell'amico Alberto Quacquarini alla batteria (anch'egli nei The Old Castle) e di numerosi ospiti: Sandrine Derouet (cori in “In The Shelter Of Your Eyes”), Leandro Pagliari (tamburello in “Camel Escape”), Doryan Pagliari (cori in “Stars In Your Eyes”), Wilson Pagliari (voce narrante in “Lune De Mer”), Luca Vittori (cori in “Father's Words” e “Light In The Night”), Irene Vittori (cori in “Light In The Night”) e Silvia Marques (cori in “Stars In Your Eyes”).
A prevalere è l'amore viscerale per il Progressive Rock, con frequenti richiami ai Pink Floyd: lo si avverte sin dal vociare dei bambini in “So Begin”, dotata di un'intro che non sfigurerebbe in “The Division Bell”. La musica, soffice e curata, gode di un tocco di chitarra morbido e ponderato, colonna sonora perfetta per un viaggio immaginifico dalle melodie capaci di toccare l'anima.
Il Rock proposto affonda le radici nella tradizione, mettendo in mostra la preparazione dell'artista attraverso temi di facile memorizzazione; ne è un esempio “Stars In Your Eyes”, che resta fedele all'universo di Gilmour e soci senza scostarsene di un millimetro. Un lieve cambio di registro si avverte in “Father’s Words”, che vira con delicatezza verso il Neo Prog. Il cantato è convincente: mai invasivo, risulta coinvolgente grazie a un'interpretazione quasi sussurrata. La sezione strumentale nella seconda parte del brano trasmette una profonda serenità.
La chitarra acustica apre la strumentale “Watching Through The Window On A Melancholic Rainy Day”, traccia leggera che cattura lo sguardo di un bimbo rapito dalla pioggia. Segue “Hold On!”, un passaggio Pop-Prog ben strutturato nelle coralità, diretto e gradevole. Ci si lascia poi incantare dalle sonorità "Genesiane" di “Lune De Mer”, per poi tornare in orbita Pink Floyd con “In The Shelter Of Your Eyes”. C’è spazio anche per il Canterbury sound dei Camel nella strumentale “Camel Escape”, mentre “Memory Box” omaggia lo stile dei Marillion.
Chiude in bellezza “Light In The Night”, sintesi perfetta della scuola di Pagliari, che con questo debutto riesce a emozionare e convincere in ogni passaggio. È un disco privo di cali di tensione, testimonianza di una padronanza compositiva eccellente. Una bellissima sorpresa che non dovrebbe mancare nello scaffale di ogni collezionista di Prog italiano. We were all children once, capable of looking at the world with a perspective full of wonder and a desire for discovery. As we grow up, we tend to lose the purity of those sincere sensations; it would be precious, instead, to regain that capacity for awe.
Paolo Pagliari (vocals, guitars, dominance, percussion, keyboards) explores this theme through an emotionally dense concept album. Although “Through The Eyes Of A Child” is his solo debut, we are not dealing with a newcomer: Pagliari is, alongside Gabriel Kiss, the soul of the Marche-based band The Old Castle, with whom he recorded “Working Travellers”, “Storie Nascoste” (2001), and “Wistful” (2022). A music therapist with extensive experience in advertising projects and tribute bands (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd), the artist pours his entire cultural background into this work.
In this emotional treasure chest, Pagliari enlists the collaboration of his friend Alberto Quacquarini on drums (also of The Old Castle) and numerous guests: Sandrine Derouet (backing vocals on “In The Shelter Of Your Eyes”), Leandro Pagliari (tambourine on “Camel Escape”), Doryan Pagliari (backing vocals on “Stars In Your Eyes”), Wilson Pagliari (narrator on “Lune De Mer”), Luca Vittori (backing vocals on “Father's Words” and “Light In The Night”), Irene Vittori (backing vocals on “Light In The Night”), and Silvia Marques (backing vocals on “Stars In Your Eyes”).
What prevails is a visceral love for Progressive Rock, with frequent nods to Pink Floyd: this is evident from the children's voices in “So Begin,” featuring an intro that wouldn't feel out of place on “The Division Bell.” The music, soft and polished, benefits from a smooth and thoughtful guitar touch—a perfect soundtrack for an imaginative journey with melodies capable of touching the soul.
The Rock presented here is rooted in tradition, showcasing the artist's expertise through easily memorable themes; “Stars In Your Eyes” is a prime example, remaining faithful to the universe of Gilmour and company without straying by a single millimeter. A slight change of pace is felt in “Father’s Words,” which delicately veers toward Neo-Prog. The vocals are convincing: never invasive, they remain engaging thanks to an almost whispered interpretation. The instrumental section in the second half of the track conveys a sense of profound serenity.
Acoustic guitar opens the instrumental “Watching Through The Window On A Melancholic Rainy Day,” a light track that captures the gaze of a child captivated by falling rain. This is followed by “Hold On!”, a Pop-Prog passage that is well-structured in its harmonies, direct, and pleasant. One is then enchanted by the "Genesis-esque" sounds of “Lune De Mer,” before returning to the Pink Floyd orbit with “In The Shelter Of Your Eyes.” There is also room for the Canterbury sound of Camel in the instrumental “Camel Escape,” while “Memory Box” pays homage to the style of Marillion.
“Light In The Night” closes the album beautifully—a perfect synthesis of Pagliari’s musical education. With this debut, he succeeds in moving and convincing the listener at every turn. It is a record without any lulls, a testament to truly excellent compositional mastery. A wonderful surprise that should not be missing from the shelf of any Italian Prog collector. MS
