Notturno

NOTTURNO - Iceblink
Autoproduzione
Genere: Post Prog Moderno
Supporto: digitale / Spotify / Tidal / Deezer / Amazon music - 2023

MS

In the new millennium we are increasingly distancing ourselves from supported music and moving toward liquid music, and that is a shame, because we lose physical contact with it. It is true that there is a return to vinyl today, however it is always the nice boomers who hoard those copies, as they say, one swallow doesn't make a summer. This is all unfortunate, because just imagine what "The Dark Side Of The Moon" would have been without its beautiful gatefoold created by that genius Storm Thorgerson, and I am not saying this out of nostalgia, but as a matter of fact. Having a booklet in hand to read while listening, touching the record, is a ritual that most fans also enrich with the sense of smell, a little like one does when buying a new book, let's confess, who has never smelled its pages? Then I do not want to go into the discussion of sound quality otherwise it will not come out. This preamble only to say that it is a pity that a beautiful record like "Iceblink by the Catania trio Notturno, does not enjoy the necessary support that would certainly have enhanced it beyond measure. The cover then is very beautiful, a true mirror of the music proposed in this work composed of nine tracks. It is also true that by doing so, expenses are lowered, and then you have the opportunity to present yourself to the whole world through the well-known digital channels at your disposal. Perhaps this is also fine, but listening to music on a good stereo system rather than in a pc or cell phone is in my opinion quite another thing.
Having said that (which is not meant to be a criticism of Notturno, but rather a snapshot of a collective scene that today is moving in unison in such a manner), let us come to the band composed of Claudia Caudullo (guitar, vocals), Riccardo Liberti (bass and programming), and Francesco Cucinotta (synth), the latter coming last in the project that promotes music both melancholic and impressive.
Certainly Steven Wilson together with Porcupine Tree and bands such as Anathema, or the more acoustic Opeth, have indeed made a large number of proselytes, even on Italian soil. It should be noted that all these names still refer to one band from the past, Pink Floyd. The songs are mostly instrumental, with sporadic singing, so Notturno stakes everything on the quality of the melodies and certain soul-ripping solos. To make "Iceblink" they also enlist the support of a dozen or so special guests, the attention to detail therefore is sought after.
"Beyond The Stars" opens with a relentless arpeggio, while the entrance of other rhythmic instrumentation heightens the pathos of the moment. Different genres can be extrapolated in this music from Post Rock to Prog via Psychedelia, all ingredients leading to the term Modern Post Prog.
. The electric guitar when it starts off on a high note sends more than a chill through the skin, and it is indeed a pleasure to find oneself listening with eyes closed, dangling one's head in the air. "Echoes And Dust" leads back to what I was suggesting earlier, which is that certain acoustic Opeth have also left their mark on the hearts of Nocturne. The veil of melancholy flutters over our minds, yet we are still Mediterraneans; it is inevitable that some sunshine will come from time to time.
"Starless" is an important title that inevitably leads back to King Crimson's absolute masterpiece, but here we are not dealing with covers, rather with Anathema period style "Alternative 4" or
"Judgement," so 1998 and 1999 years. The guitars alternate between arpeggios and scratchy metal riffs. Claudia Caudullo's suave vocals are the icing on the cake. The brief "The Sudden Glow" is an effected moment of synthesizers leading to the title track "Iceblink," a song that manages to unite present and past thanks to Folk vocals on bases once again alternating acoustic and electric bangs. For my personal taste it is one of the most interesting moments of the whole album. It's the turn of "Remnants (Reprise)," here Nocturno becomes raw, massive, while the vocals recall the cadence of Vincent Cavanagh, again Anathema.
"Circles Of Confusion" is a sonic gem with a Pink Floyd-esque electric guitar finale, a true emotional bombshell that places this track at the top of my personal ranking. "The Invisible Caress" is a slow effect, while the closing is given to "Interception Of The Night Sky," where psychedelic effects are the backbone of the soundscape.
To fans of this genre, all that remains is for me to recommend listening to "Iceblink" on the platforms suggested in the opening titles and to emphasize the fact that we in Italy have several good representatives as well, one of which is called Notturno, nomen omen. MS

Disvevia

DISVEVIA – Whitin All This Space
Autoproduzione
Genere: Neo Prog / Psichedelia
Supporto: Bandcamp – 2023

La formazione è numerosa, infatti comprende Gualtiero Anselmetti (sassofono contralto), Roberto Biliotti (tromba), Stefano Borsi (batteria), Coro Jazzy Ensemble (coro), Mattia Cavicchi (chitarra acustica, seconde voci), Marco Cecchi (basso, seconde voci), Fabio Colonnello (didgeridoo), Marco Di Bari (chitarra elettrica), Marco Iozzia (percussioni, batteria, drum machine), Simone Lupo (chitarra acustica, chitarra classica, seconde voci), Elisa Magrini (voci), Matteo Magrini (voci), Francesco Manetti (chitarra elettrica), Federico Mazzinghi (voce, basso elettrico, sintetizzatori, campionamenti), Matteo Muscedra (pianoforte, tastiere, ciaramella), Riccardo Paggi (basso, armonica), e Daniele Ramisti (chitarre).
MS

San Poerino, a town in the countryside located between Arezzo and Siena, here a large group of musician friends from other parts of Tuscany create a rehearsal room in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, amid grills, sunshine and laughter.
The ingredients are really good to create that balance/understanding that often goes looking for with much difficulty. The band Disvevia was formed in 2020 and the name takes its inspiration from Frederick II of Swabia, king of Sicily in 1,200, famous for being a multifaceted character and open to contamination, despite living in times where imposition was the order of the day. The characteristics are right for a certainly Progressive attitude.
As I said, the lineup is large, in fact it includes Gualtiero Anselmetti (alto saxophone), Roberto Biliotti (trumpet), Stefano Borsi (drums), Coro Jazzy Ensemble (choir), Mattia Cavicchi (acoustic guitar, second vocals), Marco Cecchi (bass guitar, second vocals), Fabio Colonnello (didgeridoo), Marco Di Bari (electric guitar), Marco Iozzia (percussion, drums, drum machine),
Simone Lupo (acoustic guitar, classical guitar, second vocals), Elisa Magrini (vocals), Matteo Magrini (vocals), Francesco Manetti (electric guitar), Federico Mazzinghi (vocals, electric bass, synthesizers, samples), Matteo Muscedra (piano, keyboards, shawm), Riccardo Paggi (bass, harmonica), and Daniele Ramisti (guitars).
On the cover for this debut we can view a self-portrait of Egon Leon Adolf Schiele, an Austrian expressionist painter of modern art as well as a printmaker who was a student of Gustav Klimt.
The studio recording of the fourteen tracks that make up the work is supervised by Matteo Magrini.
From the very first track entitled "Vaia Vaia," one can extrapolate the many psychedelic influences close to the world of Pink Floyd and that of the Doors, here one can even hear a final callback to the famous song "The End." A piano starts "Hook," the intense singing is in English while the slightly melancholic music marries a more modern period alternating with electric phases, almost bordering on Metal and Neo Prog, this also thanks to the valuable contribution of the guitar with a hint of the 80s. It unleashes much intensity, the dated sound lending a special charm to the whole.
Acoustic the beginning of "Palmi Al Cielo," then launching into a cadenced and massive electric riff, here the singing is done in Italian. Sonic highs and lows make for a smooth result. A glimpse of sunshine opens through "Come Un Respiro Qualunque," songwriting cranks its way through these sonic influences, demonstrating an open-mindedness of the components that is certainly not ordinary, the name Disvevia thus confirming the already described why. A bass turn begins the bitter "Carne Di Cristo" , here the strong point lies in the refrain. I then leave it to you to discover the gems contained within this work, including the operatic and cinematic "Dies Irae," complete with an intro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
"Whitin All This Space" is a debut full of genres, perhaps even too many for a neophyte approaching Progressive Rock today, however for the writer it is instead the strong point, the whole fluidity of the listening experience, in my opinion, benefits from it. As Disvevia searches for their ultimate identity, I already appreciate it this way, including the palpable fun the musicians exude while performing and conceiving these fine songs. And speaking of grilling, there is indeed a lot of meat on the grill here. MS

The Anchestry Program

THE ANCHESTRY PROGRAM – On Silent Mammalia Pt II
Progressive Promotion Records
Distribuzione: G.T. Music
Genere: Neo Prog
Supporto: cd – 2023

Così la formazione odierna: Andy Lind (batteria, cori), Mani Gruber (chitarra, cori), Mike Voglmeier (chitarra, cori), Ben Knabe (voce, chitarra), Marco Osmajic (basso) e Thomas Burlefinger (tastiere, cori). Si circondano anche di special guest grazie all’ex Sieges Even Wolfang Zenk (solo chitarra in “Ancestor”), Tom Reinbrecht (sax in “Path On Inspiration”), Reinhard Greiner (tromba in “Path On Inspiration” e “Create Our Sin”), Petra Amasreiter (violino in “War Is Over”), Emil Bekir (violoncello in “Pangreta’s Box) e Klaus Filser (violino e viola in “Pangreta’s Box).
Ottimo. MS

Germany has always shown over time that it is a nation very attentive to the Progressive phenomenon in a general sense, an eye is turned more to Neo Prog through a long sequence of bands. Among the most prominent names are RPWL, Argos, Bel Air, Blind Ego, Chandelier, Eyesberg, Morphelia, Pandoras Box, Saris, Seven Steps To The Green Door, Shamall, Subsignal, Violet District and The Wow, this list I am only compiling for those more curious than you who would like to delve into the scene. The Anchestry Program (TAP), was founded in Munich circa 2019. Three studio albums including this second part of "On Silent Mammalia," beginning with "Tomorrow" (FreiBad Schallplatten & Musikverlag) in 2020. The artwork with the predominant color yellow, blatantly recalls the first part of this work, with a futuristic landscape inhabited by flying whales. The hardback edition is highly edited, opening four sides and containing an abundant booklet with photos, lyrics and credits.
The band today changes elements and expands to become a sextet, bassist Marco Osmajic replaces Frank Thumbach while Mike Voglmeier (guitar and vocals), joins the project. Thus today's lineup: Andy Lind (drums, backing vocals), Mani Gruber (guitar, backing vocals), Mike Voglmeier (guitar, backing vocals), Ben Knabe (vocals, guitar), Marco Osmajic (bass) and Thomas Burlefinger (keyboards, backing vocals). They also surround themselves with special guests thanks to former Sieges Even Wolfang Zenk (guitar only in "Ancestor"), Tom Reinbrecht (saxophone in "Path On Inspiration"), Reinhard Greiner (trumpet in "Path On Inspiration" and "Create Our Sin"), Petra Amasreiter (violin in "War Is Over"), Emil Bekir (cello in "Pangreta's Box) and Klaus Filser (violin and viola in "Pangreta's Box).
The disc has ten tracks in which excluding the intro "Mysticeti Ambassador... " and the outro "... Of Silent Mammalia," respectively of the shorter duration of two and almost four minutes, the others all hover around seven minutes, confirming an honored Progressive structure. The music is very well cared for in the arrangements and the good recording enhances the whole success of this record that will surely delight Neo Prog lovers. Numerous points of inspiration make "On Silent Mammalia Pt II" an album open to every solution, one can extrapolate Arena, Ayreon, Pink Floyd, Queen, Savatage, Genesis, IQ and many other influences, testifying to a broad musical culture on the part of the components.
And it is THE intro "Mysticeti Ambassador..." that leads us into this fantasy world, amid electronic effects and borderline recitative singing, just as Dutch Lucassen's band Ayreon has released over the years. The games officially open with "Path Of Inspiration" and horns calling out the precise rhythms, where keyboards play an almost vintage role. The sound hardens through a cadenced metal riff that alternates with more upbeat phases. The merit of this music is the sonic ensemble apt to raise a wall full of details all to be discovered. We enter Neo Prog in "Pangreta's Box," another movement full of effects (also vocal) and mood changes until even reaching a metallic whispered growl. Dissonances are offered through strings, while the refrain could well reside in the discography of the British IQ. During the listening one has, indeed, the feeling of being flown over by space whales, the atmospheres have numerous sudden changes and yet always available to the imagination. The instrumental guitar solo is also excellent. "War Is Over" has a greater focus on the 1970s, "Maria's Smile," at nearly nine minutes in length, is the longest song on the album and is also one of the songs I enjoyed the most, thanks to some at times psychedelic atmospheres that can be traced back to the world of Pink Floyd. A kind of heartfelt and affecting ballad with a poignant final guitar solo. And we are only halfway through, where the dust is further ignited by "Ancestors," a showcase for Andy Lind's ballistic qualities. Another elevated emotional moment, comes from "Star To Follow," a seesaw of sensations that always point to good songwriting as well as 80s New Wave influences. "Paranoid Structures" changes course again to highlight the technical qualities of the individual members, followed by "Create Our Sins," where the singing is again reminiscent of Paul Menel's from the IQ period of the late 1980s.
"Paranoid Structures" changes course again to highlight the technical qualities of the individual components, followed by "Create Our Sins," where the singing is again reminiscent of Paul Menel's from the IQ period of the late 1980s. Sunny the finale "... Of Silent Mammalia," compared to all the material heard this is definitely the closest to the simple song formula, but a separate mention goes to the guitar solo, again very effective.
"On Silent Mammalia Pt II" is a total record, in which the whole moves along without any tired moments, surprises are always just around the corner, while the taste for melodies are another trump card of this work that I highly recommend to all music lovers in a general sense. Excellent. MS

Palmer Generator

PALMER GENERATOR – Ventre
Autoproduzione / Bloody Sound
Genere: Post Rock / Krautrock
Supporto: cd – 2023

MS

PALMER GENERATOR - Ventre
Self-Production / Bloody Sound
Genre: Post Rock / Krautrock
Support: cd - 2023

The era of Rock Psychedelia developed between the 1960s and 1970s. As historical standard-bearer groups we can mention Pink Floyd or the Doors just to name two famous names. Actually the basis comes from the Beatles and that 1966 album "Revolver" that left an indelible mark on Rock. From there the variations take different paths and forms, for example in Europe German Krautrock churns out interesting groups like Can, early Kraftwerk or Neu!!. And today? The discourse is similar to that of Progressive Rock, i.e., it survives among difficulties, but it is always food for a hungry circle of fans ready to jealously hoard the sounds of a new group. Well, so having said that, already I recommend that fans of the genre mark the name of the Marche-based Palmer Generator. For the sake of the record, I must point out that modern Post Rock sounds also reside in the music on offer.
They are a family in the purest sense of the word, father, son and uncle consisting of Michele Palmieri (bass), Mattia Palmieri (drums) and Tommaso Palmieri (guitar). They were founded in Jesi in 2010 and to date have recorded four studio works, including this "Ventre." Past albums are titled "Shapes" (2014 - Red Sound Records), "Discipline" (2016 - Astio Collettivo, Torango) and "Natura" (2018 - Bloody Sound Fucktory, Brigadisco) as well as participating in a Split together with The Great Saunites in 2020 titled "PGTGS" (Bloody Sound Fucktory, Brigadisco, Il Verso Del Cinghiale).
Psychedelic music, it is known, is food for the mind, however, the belly can also have a say, understood as the first place where one makes an appearance on this earth. Says the band, "The mind-body dualism is overcome in the image of the belly, the stomach considered as a second brain, as the place where the synthesis between spirit and matter takes place.".
The album consists of four tracks for a journey, where listening often requires silence with attached closing of the eyes.
The track "I" is the shortest with four minutes of Post Rock centered on a refined rhythm, a good conversation between bass and drums, but the real trip begins through "II," here the guitar thanks to effects builds a hypnotic sound cone in a crescendo that sees the inexorable entry of the other instruments. This music does not aim at instrumental solos but rather wraps itself around repetitive solutions as, for example, certain King Crimson were able to do during a period of their splendid career. The purpose of these sounds is to create ethereal but also jittery atmospheres, nothing to whistle about, just a means of locomotion to launch into fantasy.
Calm beginning on the bass sound in "III," the longest instrumental on the album thanks to its total duration of fifteen minutes.
The Palmer Generators tend to get a certain sound turn stamped in your mind and then develop it over the course of the journey through changes of rhythm and mood. Echo effects make everything more expansive. In this track the trio's true soul comes out into the open.
Finally, it is the drums that open "IV," this excerpt is articulated compared to the previous ones with the grafting of different solutions and changes of rhythm, while still clinging to the insistent guitar strokes.
The very simple and direct artwork is made by Mattia Palmieri, just like this music devoid of unnecessary frills, bare and raw enough to express the emotional concept of the theme.
We certainly do not all vibrate in the same way, this music is not suitable for all minds, but only for those open ones who feel like having a good trip from time to time. MS

Sfaratthons

SFARATTHONS – Odi Et Amo
Autoproduzione
Genere: Progressive Rock Italiano
Supporto: Digital / cd – 2023

In chiusura “Odi Et Amo – Closing Session”.
MS

SFARATTHONS - Odi Et Amo
Self-production
Genre: Italian Progressive Rock
Support: Digital / cd - 2023

For those who still had doubts or perplexities about the avalanche of sound that swept through Italian music in the early 1970s coming mainly from England, today we have yet more proof of that with the Abruzzese Sfaratthons. Rock by us at that time was represented mainly by Bobby Solo, Little Tony, Celentano and a few others, but with the advent of Progressive Rock (in 1971 still called Pop) our music was dressed in new colors. While maintaining the Mediterranean nature of the sounds, we immersed ourselves in this adventure, where the counterculture took center stage. The results were nothing short of excellent at least until the end of 1975, where the movement began to show the first hints of creative fatigue. Bands such as Premiata Forneria Marconi, Orme, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso etc. are still listened to with pleasure today and all extraordinarily still tread the stages.
This is followed over time by a flood of bands that take the aforementioned pioneers as a reference and then revisit it with their own personality (in case there is one). Certainly the genre is not highly commercially successful, so much so that it always remains in the limbo of the niche of fans given the complexity of some of the songs and especially the length that does not allow much radio airplay. But that doesn't matter to Prog fans; on the contrary, the less the merrier.
The Spharatthons throw themselves heart and soul into this vasculature of sound, even with this third album conceived during the pandemic period. Imagine you listen to the Orme and add the flute to it, this is a fatal combination for the hearts of Prog fans, and already these few lines are enough to make them buy the new "Odi Et Amo." Another common point between these musicians of the past and present is precisely the lyrics concerning the eternal struggle between good and evil (for Orme "Felona E Sorona"), here it is hate and love, reason and feeling. The lyrics are by poet Donato Di Luca.
The lineup is composed of Giovanni Di Nunzio (lead vocals, guitars), Cecilio Luciano (drums), Luca Di Nunzio (keyboards, guitars, vocals), Giovanni Casciato (guitars) and Mario Di Nunzio (bass) with the addition of Geoff Warren on flute and Sabino Matteucci's saxophone on the track "Saffo."
On average, the eight tracks that make up the work are mini-suites, another confirmation of the above. Starting right with "Odi Et Amo," the cards are immediately laid out and the instrumental parts are really intense, deep, so much so that they often give goosebumps to those like me who love certain vintage sounds. The keyboards play an important role, but the rhythm section also proves to be a real well-oiled engine. What immediately comes out is the understanding and love of the instrumentalists for this music, while the flute is the real added value to the economy of this music.
The anticipation of the vision of one's woman is frescoed in a colorful sound canvas in the song "La Donna Amata" and more woman in "Maddalena," a story about the vicissitudes of a villager sung in dialect. The poetics of "Sappho" centers on passion and love for various characters, here the music is truly appropriate soundtrack between Orme and sound effects. Poignant is the final guitar solo. Lots of mellotron among the notes and that is ingredient that can never be missing in this dish. Nineteenth-century love for "Zarina," a piece composed by Geoff Warren amidst San Remo reminiscences of 2020. "Ti dono Una Canzone" is also by minute length itself hovering around three minutes, the single that anticipates the album and is also composed in 2020. In closing "Odi Et Amo - Closing Session."
Listening to this third work of Sfaratthons is like drinking a cool glass of water, when one is thirsty for this immortal music, better drink cannot exist. Italian Prog is always alive, in spite of those who say the genre is finished. MS

Matteo Mancuso

MATTEO MANCUSO – The Journey
The Players Club
Genere: Virtuoso strumentale
Supporto: cd – 2023

(quanto ci piace viaggiare a noi italiani).
MATTEO MANCUSO - The Journey
The Players Club
Genre: instrumental virtuoso
Support: cd – 2023

There are numerous schools of thought regarding fully instrumental music, there are listeners who prefer it and others who avoid it as it is often a harbinger of long and boring lucubrations. Then, if a soloist is playing such a record, one can run into a kind of gymnasium in which to show off one's muscles at the expense of perhaps good melodies. After all, a record, or rather a song, at the end of listening must leave a trace of itself, a tune to be remembered if not even whistled, otherwise everything is lost in the twists and turns of oblivion, yes the artist is very good but what did he say?I find myself listening today to a talent from Palermo named Matteo Mancuso, who despite his young age of twenty-seven, already shows that he has a long experience in the field of guitar playing, already at the age of twelve he frequents stages of Jazz festivals. When you have a basic knowledge of Blues and Jazz, the paths you take later in other genres are inevitably downhill, and I am certainly not alone in that view.
He is a multifaceted player, ranging from classical to electric, in 2017 he recorded a record with the Jazz Rock trio named Snips, and the same year within the famous Umbria Jazz in Perugia, he got a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College in Boston. In 2019 he became an official endorser at the NAMM show in Los Angeles for Yamaha Guitars, but the thing that struck me most about his personal way of approaching the instrument is playing without a pick, demonstrating study and research in the field. "The Journey" is the official debut under his own name, and how better to start than with a journey also inspired by Marco Polo's Milione? (how we Italians like to travel).
The album consists of nine tracks, and playing with him on bass are Riccardo Oliva and Stefano India, on drums Gianluca Pellerito, and Giuseppe Bruno, on organ and piano Giuseppe Vasapolli. The artwork is a work by Roy Koch. The album is completely devoted to easy-listening melody, and this already may appeal to a very wide audience, although of course Mancuso's technique often leaks out impressively in all its crystallinity. The opening "Silkroad" bears witness to this thanks to an effective mid tempo that immediately grabs the listener's attention, a piece very close to the Progressive Rock world. In "Polyphemus" Jazz springs forth, lovable and smooth, followed by "Falcon Flight" still centered in the described context, with more refined sound scales and a sustained rhythm.
"Open Fields" is delicate, a passage into the Blues if you will also in the style of early Pino Daniele. And it is the turn of the single that precedes the album complete with video entitled "Drop D.", here the grove is direct as well as simple, all dedicated always in favor of pleasant melody.
Another trump card of this album is the length of the tracks, which are never long and all around four, maximum six minutes. More jazz and fusion for "Blues For John," the juxtaposition with the music of Jaco Pastorius is inevitable. There is a guitar solo here that really leaves me fulfilled! Mancuso now harnesses the classical guitar to give us a breather after so much important material, and he does so in favor of a cozy and somehow even experimental track entitled "Time To Leave." On "Samba Party" there is all the guitarist's love for the instrument, and to conclude "The Journey," an acoustic ballad featuring the collaboration of his father Vincenzo, also an esteemed musician in the field.
In concluding this review I would like to remark on two praises received from Mancuso that are surely worth more than my own: "An absolute talent; his improvisational skills are light years ahead. It would take two or three lifetimes. It was like when Jaco (Pastorius) came on the scene...how did he get so good and so fast...?" and "The evolution of the guitar is firmly assured in the hands of these kinds of musicians.... it's just a new level, the tone, the touch, the notes...they're very clean musicians, no slobs!", the former is by Al Di Meola and the latter by Steve Vai, and sorry if that's not enough. Gianni Venturi

GIANNI VENTURI – Il Poema Della Balena Spiaggiata
Autoproduzione / PMS Studio Indie Music Label
Genere: Sperimentale – vocale
Supporto: cd / Bandcamp – 2022

MS

GIANNI VENTURI - Il Poema Della Balena Spiaggiata
Self-Production / PMS Studio Indie Music Label
Genre: Experimental - vocal
Support: cd / Bandcamp - 2022

What is art is a topic that has become overblown over time, it has been described in hundreds of ways and our vocabulary of the Italian language gives a distinct definition of it summarized here: "Any form of activity of man as a proof or exaltation of his inventive talent and expressive ability." It follows accordingly that man needs art as a true alternative language of his being. Often words are not enough to extract what one has inside, and in this case music, painting, dance etc. come to the rescue. , in others, however, it is words that give additional meaning to art, especially when they are as heavy as boulders.
The Bolognese Gianni Venturi now in the Italian experimental and progressive scene for decades, is a certainty as an author of poetry in music, a researcher of vocalities through shaman studies, espousing the cause thought associated with directness expressed through the combination of meaning/sound. Therefore, it is not about listening to music by annexed expression of the term, but rather it is the delving into a social context examined through the power of words through a strong personality. Imagine in modern times finding an anachronistic approach to counterculture, a viaticum of protest from the 1970s period, with a robust sense of being at the center of attention. The words employed by Venturi therefore scratch the slate of thought, releasing in the listener indelible shrill senses apt to strike deep into the sensitive and personal human soul.
I won't go into naming all the sound projects in which the author has been involved over time, the list is really long and for that there is the Internet to support you comprehensively.
Like a Don Quixote, Venturi enters into battles that are difficult to overcome since today's society, unlike the aforementioned counterculture period, is not accustomed to attentive listening , in a hit-and-run world this is almost impossible. Fortunately, there are always those who believe in these artists by giving them a voice and visibility, as for example has happened over time with the record label Lizard Records, also a spouse of the cause thought and personality as well as music.
But in this latest self-produced work entitled "Il Poema Della Balena Spiaggiata",the author wants to lay bare all the crimes and flaws of Western society, which are also well represented in the rich booklet that accompanies the record by director Lucien Moreau. A fat man with a dull expression towers above a barren world covered only with garbage. Eleven are the verses created to express these concepts, especially the inability to be thinking individuals and a look at love, the one that in theory should make our world run at its best.
A studied vocal work accompanies the spoken word since the initial and martial "Crepuscolo”, where melancholic reflection through awareness, releases a deep sense of bitterness: "The screen reflects the social sewer, I am part of it."
Many of you lovers of the late singer Demetrio Stratos will also find numerous affinities of approach in the poem "Esperimento Sociale”, in fact all of this closes a circle if you will also linked to the utopia of the 1970s social commitments, but Venturi is well aware of what we are today and it is therefore not a matter of "Gioia E Rivoluzione” but rather of blunt, resigned and direct reporting of facts. Some titles hint at the meaning of the poems contained, such as "The Neoliberal Cancer" or " Poema Della Balena Spiaggiata " itself.
However, here we do not presume to have a single reason in freedom of thought, but we must certainly give Gianni Venturi credit for having very clear ideas in this regard, and at least for being a ruthless chronicler of events. "Il Poema Della Balena Spiaggiata" is another poetic piece to be listened to carefully while waiting for new developments with Lucien Moreau and the third chapter of Moloch, and the second collaboration with Alessandro Seravalle in the Qohelet project. Fortunately, even today there are artists like Gianni Venturi who make people think or at least think carefully, even if only for the duration of a record, let us treasure them. MS
