I Genesis e i Pink Floyd proprio in base a quanto lasciato dai Beatles, ossia sinfonia e psichedelia.

Grazie Donato e a tutti voi.

Massimo Salari and progressive from the 1980s to the presentArcana publishes 'Neo Prog. History and essential discography'

By Donato Zoppo

Genesis, King Crimson and Yes have exhilarated millions of fans worldwide, but mentioning Marillion, Pendragon, IQ and Echolyn, or our own Ezra Winston, Malibran and Notturno Concertante, will make the hearts of the most devoted progressive rock lovers pound. Unlike the pioneers of the 1970s, the protagonists of new prog began making music in the most difficult period, that of punk, defying the times, fashions and record companies, making a hard core of fans dream of a revival of the genre. this is what Massimo Salari, a well-known commentator on progressive affairs, has been concerned with in his third work for Arcana.

In Italian Progressive Rock 1980-2013 you chronicled the most recent epic of tricolor prog, in Italian Progressive Metal you looked at the metal variant of the genre, now you've opened your eyes to an important piece of prog history. Does it all start with punk broadsides in 1977?

Greetings to all readers.
Punk is not the only architect of the momentary stop of Progressive Rock, concomitantly New Wave and disco music are also employed. If we go to carefully analyze the phenomenon we realize that these are all genres devoted to a physical relationship with music. Notoriously, Prog is music for the mind, referred to by multiple experts as "the learned music," and it just so happens that the three genres in vogue in the late 1970s and early 1980s are precisely the opposite of Prog i.e., music for the body, for dancing or living (as precisely you say well, also Punk). Why is this? Simple to say, people after ten years of long suites, experimental Rock and committed music--they are just tired. Enough of this logorrheicity, you need just a few notes to get high and the desire to engage in dancing or whatever else that is not cerebrally demanding.
Music as physical fun.
Music as physical entertainment.
Fashions change, the individual is no longer the center of interest, where in the 60s/70s one had the prerogative to be exclusively oneself, here we move to homogenization. We all have to be necessarily the same, see for example the emergence of the phenomenon of the so-called "Paninarians" pushed by the media in fashion programs such as Drive In, young people with their own language and clothes all the same. Whoever is different from this trend is out, so end of Prog!

While for the champions of the golden era the references were broad -- from the Beatles to classical music -- the new prog protagonists have narrowed their influences, starting from the cult of romantic rock to Genesis, how do you explain that?

Good question.
I think writing in a blank slate is more comfortable than doing it in an already written one. Let me explain, the Beatles twisted the rules of Rock by helping it evolve. Songs such as "Eleanor Rigby," for example, make history. The electric guitar was until the 1960s the symbol of Rock and look what these four bad boys from Liverpool go and do to you, a vocal and string song! Orchestra and vocals in Rock? No guitars? Be that as it may! Instead, with this approach even the parents of the scatterbrained "longhairs" approach Rock.  The symphonization in Rock is definitely born, something deepened later in an appropriate way by groups such as Nice, Moody Blues, Procol Harum etc. And with the song "Norwegian Wood" again the Baronets thanks to an instrument like the sitar open psychedelia in Rock. Pink Floyd and Doors above all thank them. And then Garage Rock extends to Punk ten years before the Sex Pistols themselves in the song "Helter Skelter" from the White Album, in short the Beatles further give the "la" to new ways. From here I come back to the discourse of the individual at the center of interest, that is, everyone should not be equal to another, the prerogative of the period. Here, then, is a healthy competition to be the strangest, this competition is not only at the musical level, but involves all the arts, from literature to painting etc.
Even nations are competing in this mad contest of who has the most personality, see Europe (the mother of this evolution thanks precisely to the British in the first place) and America. So much has been said (slate already written), and in a period like the 1980s where the uncomplicated nature of music is sought, even in Prog, skimming is attempted, that is, to make the best of what history has taught us. Who are among the most influential groups in the genre in the 1970s? Genesis and Pink Floyd precisely on the basis of what the Beatles left behind, namely symphony and psychedelia. Lacking a touch of romance to make it all very catchy, Camel can take care of that. And so the marriage of Genesis, Pink Floyd and Camel lead to the result NEO PROG, music for the mind yes, but with an eye toward the body as well. Major majors such as EMI sensed in the early 1980s the potential of this new genre by investing in some groups about it (see Marillion).

To speak of new prog or neo prog is to refer to a phenomenon of close contact between groups and listeners, at a time when the independent and "carbonara" dimension--indie label, fanzine first and webzine later--was dominant. Talking about IQ, Twelfth Night and companions also often means entering the DIY world....

You have to take into account the times. Our You Tube were the tapes we exchanged by recording them even by stealth. There was no Internet, so fanzines were a tam tam for careful devotees and intimates. Lots of official music magazines at that time, but fanzines delved microscopically and underground into the phenomenon related to this or that band. Bands like the ones you mentioned had a hard time, I would say squared! To make Prog when Prog is dead but still hot is rather self-defeating, if you then add to that a Gabriel-like voice (that of Peter Nicholls of IQ), music like that of Genesis and face paint in live performance, then you have bingo. It's fine for the widowed nostalgic fan who rediscovers his beloved sounds and his toy, for the rest as I answered before....It's out! So it is hard to go against the current, but to do so with the experience gained from the history of Prog is decisive. Different is the case with Twelfth Night, well-rounded artists, categorized in Neo Prog only because they officially show up in that 1980s context. They unlike major bands such as Marillion, IQ, Pendragon and Pallas, do not approach with references to Genesis, Pink Floyd and Camel but to more obscure reference points such as Van Der Graaf Generator.  Likewise, each record is a story in itself, until reaching in their last period toward sounds contaminated by New Wave itself. Simply put, a cult band but not for all hardened Prog fans.
DIY world? I don't know, maybe in the early days more media success than actual proceeds, only the greatest have gained over time playing to this day.

Marillion was the best known new prog band, from which they later moved away, changing their skin and substance, becoming a mature and influential band. Can we say that they were the most significant in understanding this phenomenon?

Absolutely.
They are the epitome of Neo Prog, a reference point for Prog bands from the 1980s onward. If for Prog in 1969 the official start was given by the record "In The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson, in 1982/83 Marillion's "Script For A Jester Tear's" was year zero. Gilmour-style guitar solos, Genesis-esque keyboards, and the great singer Fish theatrically reciting the logorrheic lyrics will set the school for all. The Jester (on the cover of my book) is a character shared by many of these bands, a character both cheerful and melancholy, the hiding behind a mask in life, an elevation to the nth degree of much of the work done live by Peter Gabriel (Genesis), a circle that closes with the past.

It is also important to talk about IQ, Pendragon, Twelfth Night and Pallas: what was the contribution to the cause made by these four British bands?

Fundamental all of them, some for one reason and some for another.
Similar but not the same, as journalists erroneously labeled them in those years. They spoke of "clones," of plagiarism, which was absolutely not true. It just so happens that even today in 2021 the bands in question are playing! Never was a prediction more wrong and pretentious. These bands have their own personality and an absolutely unique way of playing, recognizable from the first notes, only a distracted or biased ear towards Neo Prog does not notice or does not want to know. Pendragon for example are very close to Pink Floyd for the guitars of Nick Barrett and close to Genesis for the keyboards of the indefatigable Clive Nolan (Arena, Shadwoland, Strangers On A Train, Wakeman, etc. etc.). Between them hovers albeit in a very veiled way also a Hard Rock percentage, for a really catchy and gritty result, but which can be very melodic in the quieter phases. The ballads are resounding and in any case it is always Prog, so even long songs full of changes of rhythm and mood. This rule is common to the bands you mentioned.

As in the 1970s, in the following decades the national scenes moved with great vitality, from the Mexico of the Cast to the Japan of the Gerards to the Switzerland of the Deyss. This international awakening in a difficult period still has something magical about it today...

The world is open to all kinds of sounds. The magic of music will never cease to transport us out of our earthly dimension. A language that intervenes where words end. Music is an integral part of our lives that we could never do without. Neo Prog is a piece of this gigantic whole, a window to change the stale air of the music business. Reading NEO PROG HISTORY AND ESSENTIAL DISCOGRAPHY (Arcana) I hope does justice to a genre that has never had an easy life, and it is a shame to ignore.
Thank you Donato and all of you.

Assolutamente no! E chi perde viene mangiato dai leoni! All’estero non succede così!

C’è solo “Gioco Di Bimba”, come mai?

Come no! Certamente!

Abbiamo passato dieci anni in assoluto anonimato.

Poi ascolto molto volentieri i REM.

E noi scherzando abbiamo detto “ Ma sai cosa vuol dire in Italiano L.A.?

Divergenze musicali?
No, umane.

Grazie a te! E’ stato davvero un piacere! Max, spero di risentirti al più presto. Ciao a tutti.

Versione Inglese:

Hello Aldo and thank you for this interview. Let's begin this chat of ours: The beauty of your music lies in the fact that the material from 2004, namely "Infinity," marries perfectly with that of the 1970s. It is perfectly embedded with your classics, do you think that this latest work of yours can also become a classic?

It's hard to say, think that even "Felona e Sorona" was a surprise for us, in the sense that it's hard to know whether something will last or not. It is clear that we also hope so because this trilogy here ("The River," "Elements," " Infinity" ) we think it is very inspired with very good passages. However after the experience of "Felona and Sorona" I believe that all the prerogatives are there. It is time then that decides, you won't believe it but we care more about this trilogy than "Felona and Sorona", even people show us this in concerts. We did not expect this public response toward the new material.

Speaking of "Felona E Sorona," in your performance the concept is even more enriched in freshness, it sounds like a timeless suite, what is the secret? If I am not mistaken indeed, I remember that the critics at that time did not even award it with praise....

Yes, you have to know that the musical period we lived through, the most important one between 1970/71 until 1975/76 is a period that came after the infamous '68, so everything that was going on was subject to ruthless criticism, precisely because of a mentality of criticism that was ingrained. They had to find the hair on the egg at all costs. If you go and look at all the magazines of those years there, no journalist was speaking well, because there was this "fashion" of somehow criticizing the artist's work anyway. Now this way of doing things is no longer there , times have changed, the generation has changed, so now it is much easier for journalists to praise you.

In fact, I remember then there were the infamous stage invasions, in the 1970s people wanted free music, as according to them, music was an intangible , non-physical thing so they didn't want to pay for something that you couldn't then take away.

Yes, I remember there was always that small group of people shouting "Free music" etc etc and the organizers were forced at the end to let them in for free, otherwise they would smash everything! There was a climate that was not easy.

Then those on the left somehow managed to buffer this contestation, although not always. I remember the shock concert for De Gregori who was assaulted on stage by the usual invaders and he tried in every way to calm the tempers by dialoguing. But how did you guys not get entangled in this political web?

We did not get involved because, first of all we were caught up in music, in making music and more than that we neither followed nor participated. This behavior of ours had a positive side because we never took sides, but also a negative side because in those days there you had to, in the mindset, be leftist and be politically engaged. The result? If you look at music books, music magazines, not only then but now, you see that we did not enjoy the esteem from these journalists. They gave more prominence to other bands. For charity, hats off, let's be clear, for example Area, Banco etc got more light than we did. We were not part of the Culture with a "K" movement of those years. In my opinion this thing is not fair, I repeat, without taking anything away from others, it is not fair that in encyclopedias there are 5, 6, 7 pages to tell you about Area and we relegated to a little article.

I don't think you were any less, in many encyclopedias you are mentioned the right....

However, you have to know that they were almost all journalists like that and their judgment was subordinated to this thing here. Politicization let's call it that.

Today this contestation is not there, they used to want free music , but at the end of the day most people paid, but today they don't contest anyone but download music for free from the internet! Isn't this more serious?

It is true that young people have free music and this has almost led to the death of record companies. A record company struggles to survive, however, there is one thing to say, the true music lover does not download, because he wants to somehow contribute to the survival of the quality of music. He is also an "A" category record listener, that is, he does not dwell on the compressed mp3 file, he wants the pure sound quality of the original CD. Sound is fundamental to the music lover. If I shave my beard, then okay, any kind of technological media is fine, even MP3, but if I have to listen to a record I buy it original, because I don't want it to be "compressed music." I like to listen to high quality, as the production wants. However, today we live in a world where no one gives a damn about quality anymore, consequently there is decadence in this area as well. Umberto Eco said " We are a society that is becoming embarrassed," and it is true. Things of quality are increasingly rare, and people, especially young people, don't contest, they seem to be okay with everything. It's fine with headphones, MP3, but I personally want to feel involved with the sound to the fullest. It's the consequence of progress, technology goes on, it brings quantity of things, but the quality is gone. Everything that comes through the radio is picked up by the audience without too much thought. People don't linger to listen to something more challenging, and here in the cauldron I don't put only Prog, but also classical music, in short, it doesn't seem like the times of dwelling on listening anymore.

In Italy today, can a Progressive Rock band live by its music?

Absolutely not! Kids even if they are lovers of Progressive music today are too immediate. We played because we wanted to become musicians, we liked to play music, that was our goal regardless of money. It was not to become famous, or rich, you know? Today there are completely different goals from 1970. The young group now would like to immediately go on television, become famous and rich. I am generalizing of course, but it is the approach to the craft that is wrong. The musician's profession has changed! Many people would do anything to become famous, and this is also the reason why certain shows are born ,such as "X Factor," or "Friends." When I see young kids with votes , I am horrified! We in Italy, we vote for everything. We still have within us the culture of the Arena, as in ancient Rome and its Colosseum. We still put everything inside the Coliseum today and say, " to you 10, to you 7 ...." And the loser gets eaten by lions! I don't like to see these broadcasts that put votes, including the Festival Di San Remo. I don't even like Miss Italia, Miss Smile, Miss qua , Miss Là and the veline. It doesn't happen like that abroad! Going back to the Festival Di San Remo, the Italian has it in his blood, it is a cult! You can't touch it, the vote is sovereign. Of course the young person of today does not understand this, I am talking about my generation that does not accept this way of doing things. I remember once in the 1980s we were forced by our record company to participate in "Una Rotonda Sul Mare," a program back then where there were musicians put in competition. It was us against the host Corrado Tedeschi lo and behold, he won! (and here we burst out laughing ndMax). He sang a song and he won! Of course he wins, the little people always see on TV to him, not Le Orme! There, that doesn't make any sense. At this point, you understand that it is also difficult to give advice to a young person who wants to get on the circuit. The only advice I can give you , really from the heart is to go forward at full speed and believe in what you are doing, even against stormy seas. Bring forward your own ideas, not those of others!

The "Live In Pennsylvania" DVD has a terrific set list, but many of the classics that gave you commercial success are missing. There is only "Gioco Di Bimba," how come?

Yes, simply because it was a Progfest, consequently a sound product aimed at a purely Progressive audience. Then of course we change the setlist depending on the concert. We adapt to the cities and the audience it is aimed at. We are a Prog band , but we also have the humility and honesty to compose ballads that are easy to take, certainly we don't go and play them in front of an audience prepared for more complex Rock. If we do a street party, we certainly don't do over-the-top progressive, you know very well that half the audience would leave....

I'll give you an example, recently we met with the New Trolls in Mexico, they who are more inclined to the quintessential song, the more usable song, the ditty in short, ahead of that audience that night they did the "Big Concert" which they hadn't done in a long time.

You in your musical history generally played in the three-piece formation. A lot of press has always associated you for this with Emerson Lake & Palmer, I also hear Quatermass in you, am I wrong?

How not! Of course! In the late 1960s there were many "triangle" groups, especially with organ. Not only Quatermass, Nice for example Keith Emerson's, Atomic Rooster's, Palmer's and many others. We followed them all, especially what was happening in England. We used to follow Colosseum, "Valantine Suite" is beautiful, in short we were very attentive. Then it happened that our guitarist forfeited, at that point we gave even more attention to those three-piece formations, we were inspired by many English bands. If they made it, we said to ourselves, why shouldn't we make it? In the beginning we started playing pieces by Nice, by Quatermass, just to gain fellowship and to understand certain sounds. Those who later said that we were inspired by those bands spoke the truth, especially about Nice's music! It has to be said that the Prog genre was in the air, so the inspiration had to be towards those sounds. Then we customized them, the assimilated sound we reshaped, even with the difference in technique.

Yes, you actually have a lot of personality, and it is reflected precisely in the fact that there are not many groups, even in Italy, who can play your tunes.

(laughs)... when they tell me, "How did you manage to write that thing there?" I tell them, "Look, I was lucky!" it's those things that are not programmed. Or they tell me, " But that peculiar voice you have?" it's not like I've been studying. I remember John Lennon saying, "Music is already written, you have to stand there and grasp it." I don't want to give irreverent examples for charity's sake, but for example Michelangelo was asked "How did you make a statue like that?" and he replied "Simple, just remove the marble around it!" There are those who say "...I made...I wrote...I created..." here, personally I see it more on a philosophical side, I say nothing is created, you just had the privilege and also the luck to be one who grasped what already exists. If you think that way you can live your creativity in a more humble way. We in the Orme consider ourselves lucky in that sense.

You also collaborated with P. Hammill of Van Der Graaf Generator, what are your memories of him?

And it just so happens that last night in Naples we met again with David Jackson, who by the way played with Hosanna, and we were also talking about the VDGG reunion. About Hammill, I don't want to remember too much, otherwise I get nostalgic! Eheheh , anyway very nice atmospheres, and I reiterate that the best musical period is just in the early 70s.

All right, that goes for me too, I agree, but then what happened in the 80s, the plague?

Look, you said it exactly right, the plague! A virus came from America and this virus has the name of Saturday Night Fever. Everything that is dance, disco, has wiped out Prog, of course along with the generational change. As we did in 1968 with respect to Nilla Pizzi, Achille Togliani and company. Going back to what we were talking about earlier, "non-quality" wiped out everything that was built. Again, this all happened in the late 1970s. I tell you, we in the 1980s did not even have a single request! We spent ten years in absolute anonymity. Stuff to change trades to survive.

Then New Prog with Marillion , IQ and Pendragon tried to reawaken the genre, but the real revival was in the early 1990s, especially with the cold wind from northern Europe, thanks to Swedish bands like Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk etc. What about it?

It's true, we noticed it too! We said to ourselves, "How come there is still someone playing this music?" Progressively (just to use the term) it caught on more and more, and I tell you, look, even in Italy the thing has awakened. We saw it firsthand already last year with dates with unexpected full houses. We have often and often been amazed by this turnout. We have requests from all over the world, so we are happy. And let's also say that it's only right that this wonderful genre be rediscovered, even by the younger generation. And here again I go back to the previous talk of quality that I care so much about.

Let's change the subject. I know you don't have to ask dad which son you love most, I don't want to know which record you are most fond of, maybe tell me which song best represents your career or the musical passage you are most fond of.

In fact there is no single song that you become attached to. However, with time there are songs that are more ... let's say ... "inspired." "Friend Of Yesterday" is one of them. Then I add "Uno Sguardo Verso Il Cielo," the same "Cemento Armato.".... There are many of them. Let's say, from the popular point of view "Gioco Di Bimba" is the one that took the most. You see from what I'm telling you that these are all simple songs. Many of them have more of a ballad characteristic, simple structure and easy to take. Regarding the passages, on the other hand, I am very fond of "Ritratto Di Un Mattino" from "Felona E Sorona," ( sings) "...la felicitàààà...etc etc." But look there are beautiful cues in our last trilogy too! Thinking deeply, to say one in particular...I don't feel like it.

And if instead they asked the Orme to do a soundtrack, what would you say?

Ma.... Soundtrack, let's say we don't have experience with that, and then they are commissioned works. We've never had the opportunity so, I wouldn't know what to say. However, it should be an interesting thing, an experience that we lack and so definitely challenging!

And if they asked the Orme to do a soundtrack instead, what would you say?

Ma.... On the soundtrack, let's say we don't have experience with that and then they are commissioned works. We've never had the opportunity so, I wouldn't know what to say. However, it should be an interesting thing, an experience that we lack and therefore certainly stimulating!

In your spare time , if you listen to music, what do you listen to?

I tell you the truth, I listen to very little music because I can't find anything interesting anymore except Indian music. I've been studying it for many years, although it can't inspire me much. Let's say it's more of a personal thing, it helps me in meditation. It also helps me play the Sitar better and better, although we don't do great things with it in our music. However, I also listen to something new, for example the first two Coldplay CDs, there are songs I like. Then I listen very happily to REM. You see, I don't only listen to Progressive. In short ultimately I listen to little but everything.

Paul Whitehead is the designer of many of your covers. I remind our readers that he is also the author of the Genesis ones. What does he do for inspiration at work, does he listen to your music first?

Paul Whitehead works in this way: he tries to live with the artists , for example with Genesis he always went to hear the rehearsals. He would hear the music and want to read the lyrics, especially he was inspired by the lyrics. He also did the cover of "Smogmagica" to us, he came to the studio, listened, talked to us and after that he did the cover. There was the song "Los Angeles" and we in the studio always heard "El ei" meaning L.A. the initials in American. And we jokingly said " But do you know what L.A. means in Italian? It means it's her!" At this point Paul came up with the idea of representing L.A. surrounded by the walls with the likeness of a woman. Sometimes for very stupid , simple things, wonderful ideas are born. For the cover of "Elements" we met at a festival in Mexico and talking about the four elements he made me this picture. He always wants to know what the lyrics are about and also the music.

Do you remember in your long career a gaffe, or a funny anecdote that happened to you?

When there are several years behind you, things definitely happen. Of positive experiences I remember, for example, that time in 1970 when we loaded up our sleeping bags in 238 and left for White's Island to hear the full festival! We saw Jimi Hendrix playing, Jim Morrison, EL&P playing in public for the first time, Jethro Tull in their early days, I think they were playing "Stand Up." We lived directly through that period of great creativity! That was very important for us, because it also gave us confirmation that we were on the right track. Then when we came back we started working and ultimately "Collage" was born.

“Collage" the first real Italian Progressive record!

Yes, yes. Look I confess to you anyway that it was a matter of timing and luck, because all the Italian bands were heading toward that line. Yes, we were lucky precisely because we were the first. "Collage" came out in the spring/summer of 1971 and sold a lot. Then around fall/winter big historical groups like PFM and all the others came out. Another important episode was the English tour in 1974 after "Felona and Sorona." We were in England for a two-week tour and it was a key wolf's den experience for us. Negative episodes.... Here staying on "Felona e Sorona" we wanted to put Jackson's sax on it, but he is so personal, so good and characterizing that in the end "Felona E Sorona " sounded like a Van Der Graaf record! So nothing more was done with it! The choice obviously we made together with our producers. Here , this is a negative experience because it could have been an important thing that would have put us more in the spotlight in the world. Then Le Orme had lineup changes, on the one hand it's bad luck because people lose the identity of the group, on the other hand it's good luck because we always found much, much better replacements than those who left. Newcomers have always brought new blood and stimulation. That is also why we lasted 42 years! Pagliuca left, but he was replaced by Michele Bon, who I personally think is one of the most talented keyboardists in the world. Of course people are more fond of Pagliuca, no wonder, time has worked... A lot of people ask us, "Why don't you get back together?" I immediately answer that it is impossible. We have turned over a new leaf and you can't rewrite life.

Musical differences?

No, human ones. However I repeat, Bon's transplant for us was a more than good thing!

What's that time you said, "We did it!"?

Never! Not even now that I am 63 years old! The best is yet to come... (laughs).

Compare your music to a wine

... Orco cane ... what a question ... let me think ... definitely Prosecco! Our good Prosecco.

The color of your music?

What a great question! But do you know? That's a big question! I know from studying Indian music that for Indians every note has a color. To put it better, it is matched with a color. So ... since we use them all, I would say the non-color of light! Daylight is made up of all the colors you know, through the Prism you break it down, here is the set of all the colors giving a non-color. Just as sound is a nonsound, of a sound that is inaudible to the human ear that is then broken down through the various notes. The same is true for colors. Indian philosophies are interesting precisely because of this, they color the mind, as they say.

But look, this spirituality of yours in the music is very much felt!

Yes it is true, not only the Sitar highlights it, but just the whole set of instruments. How you play the bass, the drums, everything has a sense, even if it doesn't seem at first glance, anything that exists in reality (if there is a reality) everything has a sense. Even in music there are senses beyond the music itself. I really went to try to understand and discover these philosophies. I went to India, to Cylon in 1973 and to Calcutta a few years ago. My sitar teacher is there, and I was his guest and experienced their air. India is so big and paradoxical that everyone finds what they are looking for. If one is looking for spirituality, one finds it, if one is looking for modernity one finds modernity, it is a country that gives many possibilities and everyone sees and finds what they are looking for. In the West this-much less! We are more conditioned. It is more difficult to come out as an individual. India in that sense is much more free and open. Really interesting believe me.

You wrote "The Universe," then "The Infinite," that's it, how right it is that man is always trying to see or have what he doesn't have.

It is a little bit his characteristic. Not being content has led man to try to reach perfection. but he never gets there. I speak for example of my field, music, a musician when he says "I have learned" means instead that he has yet to begin. One tries to achieve something that is in front of him, but never reaches it. Be that as it may, all this has led us to evolution and Darwinian evolution, which I don't believe in very much. There is a beautiful quote by Kaiser Ling, a German philosopher writer, who says, "The shortest journey to get to oneself goes around the world," so this round-the-world trip you have to do otherwise you don't get to the closest thing you have.

You said earlier that the most beautiful things happen by chance, so do you also mean that your songs were created by chance or is there something that inspired them?

I think man in general is a kind of receiving antenna, I'm reminded of a line from the Nobel Prize winning Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who talking to God says" I am a vessel that you fill every day with new sap." We are vessels to be filled, every day we are filled with new things. In that sense it is randomness that is your relationship with the absolute. Predestination, these are things I really believe in. Example, one stands there with the guitar and melodies come to him, at that moment he had an excess of concentration, but he grasped something that already existed. We don't create anything!

Well! Thank you for these notions that can open our minds as well, we hope to hear from you again soon and a greeting from us and our NONSOLO PROGROCK readers!

Thank you! It was really a pleasure! Max, hope to hear from you again soon. Hello everyone.

Nova Sui Prati Notturni

NOVA SUI PRATI NOTTURNI – Quante Stelle
Lizard Records
Genere: Krautrock / Post Rock Strumentale
Supporto: cd – 2023

MS

NOVA SUI PRATI NOTTURNI – Quante Stelle
Lizard Records
Genre: Krautrock / Post Rock Instrumental
Support: cd - 2023

Whenever I come across an instrumental album I am somehow fascinated, because the music begins an imaginative journey from where the words end. Being able to trigger images in the listener's mind is certainly not a trivial task if we then go on to consider that each of us has his or her own precise and personal way of understanding dictated by the individual experiences of the person. We are not all the same, although the social situation today tends to make us that way. Music comes to our rescue, so does the band Nova Sui Prati Notturni.
The Krautrock proposed in these five tracks is one with a vintage flavor, a well-defined music that can be traced back to the days of yore, between the late 1960s and 1970s but with more modern connotations suggested by Post Rock. The first question that might come up is "But is there a need today for music like this?", the answer is very simple and I turn it in turn into another question, "So why do we still listen to classical music today?" In my understanding, music is just music.
To get to know Nova Sui Prati Notturni I refer back to their official biography, which tells about them as follows: "Nova sui prati notturni is an Italian rock band, in 2005 already the author of a musical, theatrical, video work dedicated to Arthur Rimbaud and James Douglas Morrison and presented at a Turin festival dedicated to the French poet in 2005 (Blog on Rimbaud).
Their first album begins with a version of Signore delle cime by composer and countryman Bepi de Marzi, who dedicates one of his writings to the group.
The 2014 album Frank is inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and is described by the website OndaRock as "the first ever post-rock work.".
Also from 2014 is the soundtrack for the documentary Holodomor. La memoria negata by Manuel Baldini and Fabio Ferrando, also presented at the Gallio Film Festival.
In 2016 the album Non expedit was released. Working Title Film Festival: In 2018 Nova are awarded together with Vicenza artist Pietro Scarso for the short film Un ultimo giro.
In 2020 Nova sui prati notturni, an album of the same name, is released. In the same year Nova return to cinema with the soundtrack of Annamaria Macripò's doc entitled Da lontano, più forte and presented at the Torino Film Festival.
On December 30, 2020, the website Princefaster puts NsPN's self-titled album in seventh place among all albums released in Italy during the year.
In December 2022, Blow Up magazine places NsPN's song "Oggi 2020" in the charts at number 37, in a ranking dedicated to the best songs of the new millennium (from 2000 to 2022)."
They are formed by Federica Gonzato (bass, piano, lyrics, voice) and Giulio Pastorello (guitars, drums, lyrics, voice) with Gianfranco Trappolin (drums, bass, guitar, voice) and Massimo Fontana (lyrics, voice, electric guitar).
"Fuera!" comes across as direct, without too many frills, even hypnotic in some moments. Although it is instrumental music inside, there are no big instrumental solos roaming around, but rather structures designed to compose a single, continuous discourse. "Last Ride" has a more introspective, almost psychedelic beginning, and it is here that the imagination gains momentum in an ethereal flight. A stand by from everyday life to carve out a quiet moment. "Lucet" in turn should be listened to with your eyes closed in order to better pick up the effect-rich sound passages. The drum beat returns in the decidedly broader and sunnier track "Matkaa." Closure falls to "Zeit," which we may place somewhere in between all that I have described.
"How Many Stars," it is true, I had not noticed them so numerous to the eye, now that I have listened well I have entered fully into your journey. A record for those who are not afraid to fly. MS

Eye Of The Atlas

EYE OF THE ATLAS – Eye Of The Atlas
Autoproduzione
Genere: Alternative Rock / Post Prog Moderno
Supporto: Digital – Bandcamp

MS

EYE OF THE ATLAS - Eye Of The Atlas
Self-Production
Genre: Alternative Rock / Modern Post Prog
Support: Digital – Bandcamp

In my mental imagination Canada for Progressive music I associate it with the city of Genoa, so much creativity and variety of artists concentrated in one place. In fact, in the 1970s there were bands coming out of Zena, to name just two, the New Trolls and Garybaldi. Canada manages to amaze me with freshness, inspired perhaps by other great classics, the artists in question know how to showcase themselves thanks to a good personality, not coincidentally it was Rush who provided the impetus for the birth of Progressive Metal. There would be more to tell, but in a review I don't think it is the case, so I introduce you to the band Eye Of The Atlas (no, it is not the American one but from Branford, Ontario) debuting with their self-titled album. It took Christopher Brown (vocals, guitars), Christopher Mulligan (bass), Richmond Wilkes (drums, vocals), Starsky Partridge (synthesizer, guitars, vocals), and Velvet Fularski (vocals) ten years to make this record consisting of no less than twenty-one tracks!  From this one can already guess that the goal is not the suite or being logorrheic during a song, but rather the straightforward melody that is easy to assimilate.
The style could be traced back to Alternative Rock, or as I wrote in my last book for Arcana, Modern Post Prog. Imagine listening to Antimatter or sunnier Anathema. The singing is very similar to Duncan Patterson's, slightly vibrato in some moments and very intense. The record tells about the life of a person named Wade, starting with "Eye Of The Atlas," if you are curious you can find all the details at this page: https://iamchrisbrown.wixsite.com/dangerghost/chapter-one
Between stillness and anger the music channels in a mix of sensations, never a moment of stalemate, electric sounds quiet down to leave the stage to arpeggios. Research also in the vocals that also effected make a valuable arrangement. Hard to find a best or worst moment, as the listening is averagely smooth, if you love Anathema for example you will be pleasantly impressed by the intro of "Spark" or if you prefer more vigor there is "Soil" that gives voice to distorted electric guitars. The rhythmics are as simple as in fact this music is and if I really have to find a flaw maybe I felt the lack of a real instrumental highly emotional solo, some of you will already have labeled me as an old listener, maybe they will be right.
Bite-and-run music, the kind that at the moment makes one go hungry and comes back shortly just for lack of "fat," and yet it is a beautiful record that I feel like recommending to all lovers of the genre. This Canada... MS
