Ci sono suoni che travalicano il piacere di ascoltare la musica; certi strumenti riportano alla magia del passato, quell’acustico che vibra assieme all’anima di chi ascolta ed esegue. L’arpa è uno di questi, ammaliante e solitamente associata alla figura femminile per delicatezza. In Italia c’è un artista di nome Vincenzo Zitello che si immerge in questo sound da moltissimo tempo, tanto che ha anche collaborato con musicisti come Franco Battiato nel progetto Telaio Magnetico nel 1975. Compositore concertista, inizia giovanissimo lo studio come violinista e violoncellista alla Civica Scuola di Musica “G. Donizetti” di Sesto S. Giovanni. Primo divulgatore e pioniere dell’arpa celtica in Italia, ha studiato lo strumento assieme all’arpa bardica (Clarsach), tanto da esibirli in contemporanea a due mani anche durante i concerti.
Vincitore di numerosi premi fra i quali menziono il “Gondola D’Argento” alla Mostra Internazionale di musica leggera 1985, Zitello inizia a registrare dischi nel 1986 con “Et Vice Versa” per rilasciare nel tempo tredici album.
Oggi “Graal” è il quattordicesimo sigillo; in esso si avvale della collaborazione di un altro importante musicista di nome Fulvio Renzi (violinista, compositore, produttore). A coronamento di una più dettagliata riuscita, non mancano special guest che rispondono ai nomi di Giovanna Barbati (violoncello), Laura Garampazzi (tromba, euphonium), Mario Arcari (oboe d’amore), Glen Velez (bodhran, rider, tamburo a cornice, triangolo), Gianfranco D’Adda (percussioni anche con Battiato), Vicki Ferrara (timpano), Simone Colzani (tamburo a cornice, percussioni, rullante scozzese), Luciano Monceri (nyckelharpa), Daniele Bicego (flauto irlandese) e Raffaele Rinciari (pianoforte).
Come suggerisce il titolo “Graal”, l’album vuole essere un tributo all’Inghilterra e al ciclo arturiano, quel complesso di miti e leggende medievali che attingono alla tradizione celtica e bretone. Trattati dunque personaggi come Re Artù e i cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda, Lancelotto e Ginevra, Parsifal, il Re Pescatore e Morgana. Zitello compone la musica, mostrando alle spalle uno studio storico della musica bretone.
“Graal” è un racconto fatto da un menestrello in parte bardo e in parte druido, un testimone dei drammi umani, che combatte per non dimenticare che ci si può liberare dalle bruttezze del mondo, che abbiamo tutti sotto gli occhi, e dalla tragicità della vita (cit. Zitello dall’intervista a Folk Magazine).
Dodici le composizioni a partire proprio dalla title track, dove le note si sostituiscono alle parole in visioni sonore cinematografiche. Il brano risulta fra le migliori composizioni di “Graal”, disegnando esili tessiture ammalianti. Più malinconica “Artù”, qui il flauto racconta di tempi remoti sino al sopraggiungere della tromba di Laura Garampazzi.
“La Dama Del Lago” è una figura misteriosa, una fata delle acque descritta al meglio dall’oboe d’amore di Mario Arcari. Più che di arrangiamenti, nel percorso generale si può parlare di sonorizzazioni cameristiche.
Nell’insieme tutto il disco è un percorso infarcito di spiritualità, fra realtà e mito, intriso di mistero, quello storico dal fascino atavico. Zitello riesce a tenere alta l’attenzione grazie alla classe delle composizioni che esulano dalla banalità. Una musica che per un’ora riuscirà a estraniarvi dalla frenesia dei tempi. Del disco esiste una doppia versione, una solo arpa che si può ascoltare su Apple Music. MS

There are sounds that go beyond the pleasure of listening to music; certain instruments bring back the magic of the past, that acoustic that vibrates together with the soul of those who listen and perform. The harp is one of these, enchanting and usually associated with the feminine figure for its delicacy. In Italy there is an artist named Vincenzo Zitello who has immersed himself in this sound for a very long time, so much so that he has also collaborated with musicians such as Franco Battiato in the project “Telaio Magnetico” in 1975. A concert composer, he began his studies as a violinist and cellist at the Civica Scuola di Musica “G. Donizetti” in Sesto S. Giovanni at a very young age. He is the first promoter and pioneer of the Celtic harp in Italy, having studied the instrument together with the bardic harp (Clarsach), to the point of playing them simultaneously with both hands during concerts.
Winner of numerous awards, among which I mention the “Gondola D’Argento” at the 1985 International Light Music Show, Zitello began recording discs in 1986 with “Et Vice Versa”, releasing thirteen albums over time.
Today “Graal” is the fourteenth seal; it features the collaboration of another important musician, Fulvio Renzi (violinist, composer, producer). To crown a more detailed success, there are special guests including Giovanna Barbati (cello), Laura Garampazzi (trumpet, euphonium), Mario Arcari (oboe d’amore), Glen Velez (bodhran, rider, frame drum, triangle), Gianfranco D’Adda (percussion, also with Battiato), Vicki Ferrara (timpani), Simone Colzani (frame drum, percussion, Scottish snare), Luciano Monceri (nyckelharpa), Daniele Bicego (Irish flute) and Raffaele Rinciari (piano).
As the title “Graal” suggests, the album is intended as a tribute to England and the Arthurian cycle, that complex of medieval myths and legends that draw on Celtic and Breton tradition. It deals with characters such as King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Lancelot and Guinevere, Parsifal, the Fisher King and Morgana. Zitello composes the music, backed by a historical study of Breton music.
“Graal” is a tale told by a minstrel who is part bard and part druid, a witness to human dramas, fighting to remember that we can free ourselves from the ugliness of the world that we all have before our eyes, and from the tragedy of life (quoted from Zitello in an interview with Folk Magazine).
Twelve compositions start with the title track, where notes replace words in cinematic sound visions. The piece ranks among the best compositions on “Graal”, drawing ethereal, enchanting textures. More melancholic “Artù”, where the flute recounts distant times until Laura Garampazzi’s trumpet arrives.
“La Dama Del Lago” is a mysterious figure, a water fairy best described by Mario Arcari’s oboe d’amore. Rather than arrangements, the overall path can be described as chamber‑like soundscapes.
Overall, the album is a journey steeped in spirituality, between reality and myth, infused with mystery, the historic atavistic charm. Zitello manages to keep the attention high thanks to the class of compositions that go beyond banality. A music that for an hour will transport you away from the frenzy of the times.
