Nuove leve apportano il proprio contributo al Metal Progressive italiano, i giovanissimi piemontesi Only One Black hanno età comprese tra i diciotto e i ventisei anni. Il fatto fa estremamente piacere, anche perché suonare questo genere prevede una tecnica strumentale di certo non banale, altrimenti il rischio è quello di fare una magra figura. Su questo gli Only One Black non tradiscono.
Si formano nel 2022 per suonare principalmente cover dei più famosi artisti Hard Rock e Heavy Metal. L’anno successivo subiscono un cambio nella line‑up e decidono di cominciare a comporre materiale proprio.
Oggi sono composti da Leonardo Piermaria (chitarra), Davide Moretti (chitarra), Leonardo Capriotti (basso), Luca Ferrero (batteria) e Camilla Sedda (voce). Il talento fuoriesce ben presto, dimostrandolo con la vittoria al “Battle of the Bands Plug’n’Play Ivrea 2023 & 2024” e al “Rock the Pine 2025”.
Il frutto del loro primo album, intitolato “Set Me Free”, è composto da dieci brani che trattano argomenti come la menzogna, la solitudine, i cambiamenti e i fini di rapporti. Alle spalle hanno ascolti di gruppi come Dream Theater, Rush, PFM e Symphony X, che hanno molto influenzato la musica composta.
“Dark”, “Just A Mask” e “Without You” sono i singoli che precedono l’album, che invece si apre con “Silver Moon”, una canzone che si lega bene al melodico tipico italiano e che mette subito in evidenza sia la bella voce di Sedda sia la ritmica precisa e variegata di Ferrero. Buono anche l’apporto del basso e delle chitarre elettriche, vere protagoniste. Lo stile richiama i primi Dream Theater, quelli più melodici, ma senza le tastiere.
Alzano il ritmo con “Moonbeam”, pezzo ricco di cambi umorali e di un assolo di chitarra elettrica davvero piacevole.
Con un intro introspettivo fatto di tastiere e chitarra, “Just A Mask” mostra i muscoli, tecnica e melodia a disposizione di una bella cavalcata sonora. Il basso è protagonista in “Dark”, un’ambientazione ammaliante sempre debitrice al teatro dei sogni. Ottima la prova vocale.
Non manca il pezzo cantato in italiano: “Without You” è una ballata più legata alla formula canzone. Un arpeggio di chitarra apre “Kill Me”, non molto distante dal brano precedente, anche se nel momento centrale si differenzia per un approccio vocale sussurrato, recitato e successivamente aggressivo da parte di Sedda, in cui dimostra la propria versatilità.
Nei canoni anche “Beat Of Time”, ma è con “Set Me Free Pt. 1” che emergono gli Only One Black più incisivi, confermati dall’arioso e sognante “Exit Again” e dal conclusivo e convincente “Set Me Free Pt. 2”. La band ha capito che l’ascolto va spezzato e variato; questo, per una giovane band, è già sinonimo di professionalità.
Gli Only One Black sono dunque una bella promessa, sono preparati e le basi ci sono tutte. Ora, per uscire dall’inflazionata massa, serve soltanto più coraggio, provare ad alzare il livello di personalità, magari staccandosi un poco da quei stilemi che ormai conosciamo molto bene e che sono alla base anche della loro musica. New blood contributes to Italian Progressive Metal, the very young Piemontese band Only One Black spans ages eighteen to twenty‑six. This fact is extremely pleasing, also because playing this genre requires a certainly non‑trivial instrumental technique, otherwise the risk is to make a poor showing. On this, Only One Black does not disappoint.
They formed in 2022 to play mainly covers of the most famous Hard Rock & Heavy Metal artists. The following year they underwent a lineup change and decided to start composing their own material.
Today they consist of Leonardo Piermaria (guitar), Davide Moretti (guitar), Leonardo Capriotti (bass), Luca Ferrero (drums), and Camilla Sedda (vocals). Their talent emerged quickly, demonstrated by winning the “Battle of the Bands Plug’n’Play Ivrea 2023 & 2024” and the “Rock the Pine 2025”.
The fruit of their first album, titled “Set Me Free”, is composed of ten tracks that deal with topics such as lies, loneliness, change and the end of relationships. Behind them they have influences from groups like Dream Theater, Rush, PFM, and Symphony X, which have greatly influenced the music they compose.
“Dark”, “Just A Mask” and “Without You” are the singles that precede the album, which instead opens with “Silver Moon”, a song that fits well with the typical Italian melodic style and immediately highlights both Sedda’s beautiful voice and Ferrero’s precise and varied rhythm. The contribution of the bass and electric guitars, true protagonists, is also good. The style recalls that of the early Dream Theater, the more melodic ones, but without keyboards.
They raise the tempo with “Moonbeam”, a piece rich in mood changes and a truly pleasant electric guitar solo.
With an introspective intro of keyboards and guitar, “Just A Mask” shows muscle, technique and melody in a nice sonic ride. The bass takes center stage in “Dark”, an enchanting setting always indebted to the theater of dreams. Excellent vocal performance.
The band does not miss the Italian‑language piece; “Without You” is a ballad that leans more toward the song formula. A guitar arpeggio opens “Kill Me”, not far from the previous track, although in the central moment it differs for a whispered, recited and later aggressive vocal approach by Sedda, in which she demonstrates her versatility.
In the canon there is also “Beat Of Time”, but it is with “Set Me Free Pt. 1” that the most incisive Only One Black emerge, confirmed by the airy and dreamy “Exit Again” and the conclusive and convincing “Set Me Free Pt. 2”. The band has understood that listening must be broken up and varied, and for a young band this is already a sign of professionalism.
Only One Black are therefore a promising act, prepared and with all the basics in place; now, to break out of the inflated crowd, they just need more courage, to raise the level of personality perhaps by distancing themselves a little from those stylistic clichés that we now know very well and that are also at the base of their music.
