Molti di noi si sono approcciati al genere Progressive Rock negli anni ’70 grazie all’ascolto di band come Genesis, Yes, EL&P, Gentle Giant, ecc., tutte dedite a un suono prettamente magniloquente se non addirittura orchestrale, almeno negli arrangiamenti. Così è nato questo amore, con un benvenuto alle tastiere nel Rock, altrimenti prima solo relegate a un ruolo di accompagnamento atmosferico. Prerogativa irrinunciabile, ogni tipo di tastiera ha un ruolo fondamentale nella musica vintage, dal Mellotron all’Hammond, e poi Moog, Mini Moog e tante altre ancora; il cosiddetto Progressive Rock classico, quello che ci viene in mente quando sentiamo nominare questo nome.
Nel corso dei decenni, fino a raggiungere i nostri tempi, questa musica, bene o male, fra alti e bassi, si è sempre saputa barcamenare in tutto il globo, e quello che più mi ha fatto piacere constatare è che persino i giovani musicisti si sono approcciati ad essa che tuttavia comincia a odorare di naftalina. Sappiamo che il Prog Rock si è evoluto e ramificato in tantissime altre strade che spesso lo hanno condotto così lontano da non poterlo più denominare con questo nome, ma ci sono sempre coloro che, tentando di sperimentare, mettono sempre i tasti d’avorio in evidenza. Una delle band più interessanti degli ultimi tempi porta il nome di Wobbler.
Questa band norvegese ha rilasciato album davvero notevoli, e il tastierista Lars Fredrik Frøislie (anche nei White Willow e Tusmørke) ne è parte integrante dello stile proposto. Rilascia il debutto personale nel 2023 con il buon “Fire Fortellinger”, apprezzato da pubblico e critica, e lo ritroviamo oggi con “Gamle Mester”.
Così presentano le note che accompagnano il disco: “Nel suo secondo album solista, "Gamle Mester" (Vecchio Maestro), Lars Fredrik Frøislie rende omaggio ai grandi del passato. Traendo ispirazione non solo dai pionieri del Rock Progressivo, ma anche dall'arte, dalla letteratura e dalla mitologia, l'album riflette su atti di creatività senza tempo che risuonano ancora oggi. Il titolo deriva dall'antica quercia "Den Gamle Mester", che si trova a Krødsherad Prestegård, che ha anche ispirato una poesia omonima di Jørgen Moe. Questo albero simbolico funge da tema unificante in tutto l'album, rappresentando saggezza, resistenza e il passare del tempo.”
Il sound proposto è quindi prossimo allo stile Wobbler, ma in queste sei composizioni si tende a mettere in evidenza l’apporto dei maestri del tempo passato.
Con Frøislie partecipano anche Nikolai Hængsle (chitarre, basso) e Ketil Einarsen (flauto dolce).
Con la strumentale “Demring” si ripercorrono sentieri Yes in un territorio tipicamente Folk norvegese, un mix che ha un suo DNA ben delineato, carissimo a un folto numero di band Prog nordiche. Il pezzo mette in vetrina le ottime qualità sia tecniche che compositive dell’artista.
“Jakten På Det Kalydonske Villsvin” è una mini‑suite di dieci minuti accompagnata dal flauto e un cantato in lingua madre dal fascino tutto personale, anche se per alcuni ciò potrebbe risultare ostico nella fonetica. Ovviamente ci sono cambi di tempo, stop & go, e atmosfere più scure che chiare, il tutto per essere considerato Prog Rock sinfonico al 100%. Gli anni ’70? Sono qui.
“Gamle Mester” si articola maggiormente in un contesto fluido, diretto, alzando l’allegria che sino ad ora è restata celata. Molto classicismo fra le note. Se si vuole ascoltare la chitarra, bisogna giungere a “Medusas Flåte”, tanto sound Anglagard e compagnia bella.
I dodici minuti di “De Tre Gratier” sono una macchina del tempo che catapulta l’ascoltatore verso sonorità arricchite dal flauto in modalità Jethro Tull e dal clavicembalo: Prog epico davvero piacevole. La chiusura spetta a un pezzo di piano elettrico intitolato “Skumring”, con una linea che richiama alcuni lavori enfatici del Neo Prog.
Per finire, consiglio l’ascolto a tutti coloro che amano quanto descritto, ma anche ai neofiti, perché qui, essendoci molta storia, magari può nascere un nuovo interesse musicale. Ho altresì notato nel web e nel cartaceo che questo album è stato coronato fra i migliori di questo 2025; personalmente concordo a metà, perché è vero che qui c’è molta classe, tecnica, buone atmosfere, storia, ma in fin dei conti siamo sempre lì e al termine dell’ascolto non resta nulla di altamente melodico da ricordare; in parole povere, un bellissimo puzzle fatto con professionalità e cultura, adatto agli ascoltatori più esigenti. Many of us were introduced to the progressive rock genre in the 1970s through bands like Genesis, Yes, EL&P, Gentle Giant, etc., all dedicated to a sound that was purely grandiose if not outright orchestral, at least in the arrangements. This is how this love was born, with a welcome to keyboards in rock, otherwise previously relegated to an atmospheric accompaniment role. An irrenunciable prerogative, every type of keyboard has a fundamental role in vintage music, from the Mellotron to the Hammond, and then Moog, Mini Moog and many others; the so‑called classic progressive rock, the one that comes to mind when we hear this name.
Over the decades, up to our times, this music, for better or worse, has always managed to navigate the globe, and what pleased me most was seeing that even young musicians have approached this style, which however is starting to smell of mothballs. We know that prog rock has evolved and branched out into many other paths that have often taken it so far away that it can no longer be called by this name, but there are always those who, trying to experiment, always put the ivory keys in the spotlight. One of the most interesting bands in recent times bears the name of Wobbler.
This Norwegian band has released truly remarkable albums, and keyboardist Lars Fredrik Frøislie (also in White Willow and Tusmørke) is an integral part of the proposed style. He released his personal debut in 2023 with the good “Fire Fortellinger”, appreciated by the public and critics, and we find him today with “Gamle Mester”.
The liner notes present the album thus: “In his second solo album, "Gamle Mester" (Old Master), Lars Fredrik Frøislie pays tribute to the greats of the past. Drawing inspiration not only from the pioneers of progressive rock, but also from art, literature and mythology, the album reflects on timeless acts of creativity that still resonate today. The title is taken from the ancient oak "Den Gamle Mester", located in Krødsherad Prestegård, which also inspired a poem of the same name by Jørgen Moe. This symbolic tree serves as a unifying theme throughout the album, representing wisdom, endurance and the passage of time.”
The proposed sound is therefore close to the Wobbler style, but in these six compositions, the contribution of the masters of the past is highlighted.
Also participating with Frøislie are Nikolai Hængsle (guitar, bass) and Ketil Einarsen (recorder).
With the instrumental “Demring”, Yes‑like paths are retraced in a typically Norwegian folk territory, a mix that has its own well‑defined DNA, dear to a large number of Nordic prog bands. The piece showcases the artist’s excellent technical and compositional qualities.
“Jakten På Det Kalydonske Villsvin” is a ten‑minute mini‑suite accompanied by the flute and vocals in the mother tongue with a very personal charm, although for some this may be phonetically challenging. Of course, there are time changes, stop & go, and darker rather than clear atmospheres, all to be considered 100% symphonic prog rock. The ’70s? They’re here.
“Gamle Mester” develops more in a fluid, direct context, raising the cheerfulness that has been hidden until now. A lot of classicism among the notes. If you want to listen to the guitar, you have to get to “Medusas Flåte”, so much Anglagard sound and the like.
The twelve minutes of “De Tre Gratier” are a time machine that catapults the listener towards sounds enriched by the flute in Jethro Tull mode and the harpsichord: truly enjoyable epic prog. The closure is left to an electric piano piece titled “Skumring”, with a line that recalls some emphatic works of neo‑prog.
In conclusion, I recommend listening to everyone who loves what’s described, but also to neophytes, because here, with a lot of history, maybe a new musical interest can be born. I’ve also noticed on the web and in print that this album has been crowned among the best of 2025; personally, I half agree, because it’s true that there’s a lot of class, technique, good atmospheres, history, but in the end, we’re always there and at the end of listening, there’s nothing highly melodic to remember; in short, a beautiful puzzle made with professionalism and culture, suitable for the most demanding listeners.
