L’amicizia che lega il bassista Colin Edwin al batterista Chris Maitland è annosa, sin dai tempi magici dei primi Porcupine Tree.
Non si sono mai staccati dalla passione per un certo tipo di Psichedelia, tanto che anche nel titolo ritorna la parola “Transmission”, adoperata anche nell’album dei Porcupine Tree, quel sound spaziale, etereo, lisergico su cui Steven Wilson ha costruito una carriera.
Con loro l’amico e chitarrista Jon Durant, che ha lavorato con Edwin fin dal 2012.
La musica può sembrare a tratti improvvisata, i tre musicisti si divertono a rincorrersi, trovarsi e, insieme, lasciarsi andare in ampi scenari in cui la mente disegna scene cinematografiche. Il sound è quindi minimale, surreale, oscuro e ipnotico.
“Transmission Resumed” mette subito in chiaro l’intento dell’album: tanta essenza leggera e impalpabile, un pezzo lisergico su cui lasciare chiudere gli occhi.
Futuristica “Journey To Rebhu”, con il basso inconfondibile di Colin a disegnare sinuose linee, e qui mi immagino il suo bel viso pacioccone e sorridente mentre tocca lo strumento. Uno scenario post‑apocalittico in cui i terrestri partono alla ricerca di una nuova terra. Alcuni potrebbero dire che questa è musica sperimentale, ma così non è, ha una solida storia alle spalle e quei punti fermi che sono parte integrante della musica dei primi Pink Floyd.
Il groove fra i componenti è perfettamente oliato, basta ascoltare “Stationary Orbit” e il suo Funky trascinante.
Resto colpito dal lavoro di chitarra di Durant in “Mechanical Tears”, soprattutto nel modo di arrangiare le melodie, ma altrettanto vale per Colin nel ritmo di “Lower Constrictor”; non da meno la gentilezza del tocco delle pelli da parte di Maitland. Un’alchimia perfetta.
Il pezzo forte arriva alla fine con “Solar Season Signal” e qui qualcuno potrebbe associare “Ummagumma” dei Pink Floyd a alcuni frangenti del brano.
Non servono tante parole: “The Baldock Transmission” è un album per spaziare con la mente, un architettato percorso in cui perdersi o, meglio ancora, lasciarsi trasportare.
In cotanto suono consiglio vivamente l’ascolto in cuffia, perché anche la qualità dell’incisione è buona e fa da evidenziatore al risultato finale.
Un disco assolutamente imperdibile per gli amanti di band come i Porcupine Tree e del sound Krautrock più psichedelico. MS

The friendship between bassist Colin Edwin and drummer Chris Maitland is long‑standing, dating back to the magical early days of Porcupine Tree.
They have never abandoned their passion for a certain kind of psychedelia, so much so that the word “Transmission” appears in the title, also used on the Porcupine Tree album, that spatial, ethereal, lysergic sound on which Steven Wilson built a career.
With them is friend and guitarist Jon Durant, who has worked with Edwin since 2012.
The music can seem partly improvised; the three musicians enjoy chasing each other, meeting and, together, letting themselves go into vast scenarios where the mind paints cinematic scenes. The sound is therefore minimal, surreal, dark and hypnotic.
“Transmission Resumed” immediately makes the album’s intent clear: a lot of light, impalpable essence, a lysergic piece on which to close your eyes.
Futuristic “Journey To Rebhu”, with Colin’s unmistakable bass drawing sinuous lines, and here I picture his chubby, smiling face while he plays the instrument. A post‑apocalyptic scenario in which Earthlings set out to find a new land. Some might say this is experimental music, but it’s not; it has a solid history behind it and those fixed points that are an integral part of early Pink Floyd’s music.
The groove among the members is perfectly oiled; just listen to “Stationary Orbit” and its driving funk.
I’m struck by Durant’s guitar work in “Mechanical Tears”, especially in the way he arranges the melodies, but the same applies to Colin’s rhythm in “Lower Constrictor”; not to mention Maitland’s gentle touch on the drums. A perfect alchemy.
The highlight arrives at the end with “Solar Season Signal”, and here some might associate “Ummagumma” by Pink Floyd with certain passages of the track.
No need for many words: “The Baldock Transmission” is an album to let your mind wander, an architected path in which to get lost or, better yet, to be carried away.
In the meantime, I strongly recommend listening on headphones, because the recording quality is good and highlights the final result.
An absolutely unmissable record for fans of bands like Porcupine Tree and the most psychedelic Krautrock sound. MS
