Non è da tutti i giorni imbattersi con una band di NeoProg; i tempi sono cambiati da quel lontano 1982, quando il genere emetteva i suoi primi vagiti. È sempre restato uno stile elegante fatto di tastiere, melodie ruffiane, assoli di chitarra molto spesso alla Pink Floyd, eppure i puristi del Prog lo hanno sempre messo da parte, come se fosse stato di serie B. La storia, tuttavia, ci ricorda che, se non ci fosse stato il Neo Prog di Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Pallas e compagnia bella, il genere Progressive Rock in senso generale probabilmente avrebbe smesso di esistere; magari no, ma di certo hanno fatto sì che sotto la cenere la brace sia rimasta calda.
Oggi il Neo Prog ha più difficoltà a esistere, poiché il pubblico si è letteralmente spezzato in due: quello sempre fedele al sound degli anni ’70 e quello rivolto al sound moderno di band come Porcupine Tree, Opeth, ecc. La via di mezzo stenta maggiormente a esistere.
Di tanto in tanto, però, nascono progetti, se vogliamo… nostalgici, ossia quelli che amano le dinamiche orecchiabili e, guarda caso, è sempre l’Inghilterra a tenere alta la bandiera del genere.
La band in esame oggi si chiama The Mighty Ra ed è gallese.
Il leader è il chitarrista e cantante Andy Edwards (Ezra And The Fyreworks) e con lui suonano Dave Rowe (basso, voce), Rob Griffiths (batteria) e Jeremy Robberechts (tastiere, voce), quest’ultimo entrato a sostituire il precedente dimissionario Rob Wilshire.
Esordiscono nel 2022 con il buon “All Secrets Known”, un disco che li mette subito in buona luce nei pareri dei critici di settore, ma anche il pubblico sembra apprezzare, solo le case discografiche non arruolano la band ancora in autoproduzione. Questa potrebbe anche essere una loro scelta personale, ma se così non fosse testimonierebbe ulteriormente lo scetticismo che si aggira attorno al Neo Prog, anche perché sarebbe da incompetenti non assumere una band del genere.
Infatti, in “Now In A Minute” la qualità è molto alta, sia compositiva, sia tecnica che di registrazione.
Otto le canzoni dai classici stilemi del caso, fra energie positive e ballate, a cominciare da “Gods Of Reality”, con tutte le carte in regola. In esso si possono estrarre influenze Arena e persino dell’AOR. Ma la cultura musicale dei componenti spazia nella musica in senso generale, persino nel Prog degli anni che furono in modalità Caravan; ecco quindi che non c’è da stupirsi se ci si imbatte in brani come “Mr Disingenuous”, ovviamente con riff più moderni. Ancora Rock robusto in “New Wheel”, oppure con “Sakura”, aperti a soluzioni eleganti e con un ritornello che presto si stampa nella mente. Cambi umorali ne abbiamo? Ovviamente sì, altrimenti non saremmo qui a parlare di Prog.
Nuovamente fanno capolino gli Arena di Pointer, Nolan & Company nel brano “Fashoda”, anche il cantato si avvicina molto. Più ricercata “Last Night On Earth”, tanta storia al suo interno. Molto allegra “Revolution”, impreziosita da scelte ritmiche spezzate e un andamento in cui le chitarre si divertono a dialogare con le tastiere. L’album si chiude con una ballata splendida dove le parti strumentali raggiungono momenti struggenti.
Ecco dunque un disco che può piacere a una vasta tipologia di pubblico: “Now In A Minute” scorre come bere un bicchiere d’acqua, emotivo e coinvolgente. Il Neo Prog è così, prendere o lasciare, ma secondo me dovreste dargli un’opportunità. MS

It’s not every day you come across a Neo‑Prog band; times have changed since that distant 1982, when the genre uttered its first cries. It has always remained an elegant style made of keyboards, cheeky melodies, guitar solos often à la Pink Floyd, yet Prog purists have always set it aside as if it were second‑rate. History, however, reminds us that without the Neo‑Prog of Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Pallas and the like, the progressive rock genre in general would probably have ceased to exist; maybe not, but they certainly kept the embers glowing under the ashes.
Today Neo‑Prog has a harder time existing because the audience has literally split in two: those forever faithful to the sound of the ’70s and those drawn to the modern sound of bands like Porcupine Tree, Opeth, etc. The middle ground struggles even more to exist.
From time to time, however, nostalgic projects are born—those that love catchy dynamics and, as it happens, it’s always England that keeps the flag of the genre flying high.
The band under review today is called The Mighty Ra and it’s Welsh.
The leader is guitarist‑vocalist Andy Edwards (Ezra And The Fyreworks) and with him play Dave Rowe (bass, vocals), Rob Griffiths (drums) and Jeremy Robberechts (keyboards, vocals), the latter having replaced the former departing member Rob Wilshire.
They debuted in 2022 with the good “All Secrets Known”, an album that immediately placed them in a good light with critics, and the public also seems to appreciate it; only the record labels have not yet signed the band, still self‑produced. This could be a personal choice, but if not, it would further testify to the skepticism surrounding Neo‑Prog, especially since it would be incompetent not to sign a band like this.
Indeed, in “Now In A Minute” the quality is very high, both compositionally, technically and in recording.
Eight songs with classic hallmarks of the genre, between positive energy and ballads, starting with “Gods Of Reality”, with all the right cards. It contains Arena influences and even some AOR. But the musical culture of the members spans music in general, even the Prog of the Caravan‑era; so it’s no surprise to encounter tracks like “Mr Disingenuous”, of course with more modern riffs. Robust rock continues in “New Wheel”, or with “Sakura”, open to elegant solutions and with a chorus that quickly sticks in the mind. Mood changes? Of course, otherwise we wouldn’t be here talking about Prog.
Again, the Arena vibe of Pointer, Nolan & Company appears in the track “Fashoda”, and the vocals come very close. More elaborate “Last Night On Earth”, packed with history. Very cheerful “Revolution”, enriched by broken rhythmic choices and a groove where guitars and keyboards play off each other. The album closes with a splendid ballad where the instrumental parts reach heart‑wrenching moments.
Thus, here is a record that can please a wide range of listeners: “Now In A Minute” flows like drinking a glass of water, emotional and engaging. Neo‑Prog is like that—take it or leave it, but in my opinion you should give it a chance. MS
