Può essere il Progressive Rock spensierato e divertente? Strano a dirsi, vista la classificazione generale di genere “dotto”, eppure esistono band che fanno della giocosità sonora e della solarità un punto fermo. Certamente Internet ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale per la globalizzazione dei stili, facendo conoscere a tutto il mondo la musica di tutti; per questo esistono anche sorprese al riguardo, come nel caso dei Moron Police, norvegesi ma solari. Nessuna oscurità, quindi, nel quarto album in studio della band, ma voglia di divertirsi, ironia e tanta tecnica messe al servizio delle armonie.
Dico subito che è musica per fan di band come Thank You Scientist e Haken, tanto per dare alcuni riferimenti stilistici.
Dopo l’EP del 2021 “The Stranger And The Hightide”, questo album di quattordici canzoni, della durata di un’ora, è ricco di ritornelli orecchiabili e melodie memorabili. Molta la paura che la band vedesse nel 2022 la fine della sua esistenza a causa della morte del batterista fondatore Thore Pettersen, deceduto in un incidente stradale, invece ecco che tornano sui palchi più intenzionati che mai a tenere viva la passione e la creatività.
Oggi sono composti da Sondre Skollevoll (chitarre, voce, cori, sintetizzatori, pianoforte, contrabbasso, desert bass, banjo, percussioni, programmazione, arrangiamenti per archi e fiati), Lars Christian Bjørknes (sintetizzatori, pianoforte, organi, melodica, percussioni, cori, programmazione, arrangiamenti per archi e fiati) e Christian Fredrik Holtsteen (basso, fretless bass). Con loro una nutrita lista di special guest, soprattutto, come si può intuire, alla batteria (Billy Rymer su tutti), ma anche di archi, vista la sinfonizzazione di molti dei brani proposti. Il frontman Sondre Skollevoll tira fuori una prova vocale eccellente, sempre pulita e perfettamente adeguata ai testi divertenti; forse è una delle migliori voci del panorama di oggi.
Non mancano neppure interventi Metal, ma sono sicuro che gli ascoltatori più puristi del genere non se ne accorgeranno, tanto sono inseriti furbescamente nei contesti.
Numerosi i cambi di tempo e le complessità strutturali che, solo a tratti, mi ricordano il modus operandi degli americani Echolyn. Le tematiche parlano di storie di vita intesa come una partita a poker (o pachinko), dell’esistenza, della fede, della fama, della perdita e della ricerca di connessioni autentiche, trasformando il dolore in speranza.
“Pachinko” è una vetrina poliedrica dei numerosi strumenti adoperati, pieni di adrenalina (“King Among Kittens” e “Take Me To The City”), ma anche di splendide ballate, come nel caso di “Make Things Easier”. Importanti le chitarre nella musica dei Moron Police, ma non da meno le tastiere onnipresenti e abbondanti di Lars Bjørknes; tutti sono strepitosi musicisti. Dinamiche varianti sono nella quotidianità delle composizioni.
Potrei definire l’album come un concept di musica fisica, sudata, magniloquente, ma credo di essere stato già abbastanza esaustivo al riguardo. La stessa “Pachinko”, nei sedici minuti di durata, ne è la cartina tornasole.
Si sfiora spesso la perfezione, e questo non dispiace ai fan più accaniti del genere.
A detta di molti, “Pachinko” è uno degli album candidati a risultare fra i migliori dell’anno, in effetti qui c’è tutto, soprattutto le melodie per cantare insieme a loro. Tuttavia avviso che, alla fine dell’ascolto, se ne esce con la pancia davvero piena, tanta materia da digerire. Pregio? Difetto? Questo risiede nel gusto personale di ciascuno di noi, resta il fatto che non si fanno ostaggi: qui si vive o si muore. Mamma mia, che sventola! MS

Can progressive rock be carefree and fun? Strange to say, given the generally “serious” classification of the genre, yet there are bands that make sonic playfulness and sunshine a fixed point. Certainly the internet has played a fundamental role in the globalization of styles, making everyone’s music known worldwide; because of this there are also surprises, as in the case of Moron Police, Norwegian but sunny. No darkness, then, in the band’s fourth studio album, but rather a desire to have fun, irony, and a lot of technique put at the service of harmony.
I’ll say right away that this music is for fans of bands like Thank You Scientist and Haken, just to give some stylistic references.
After the 2021 EP “The Stranger And The Hightide”, this album of fourteen songs, lasting about an hour, is rich in catchy hooks and memorable melodies. There was a lot of fear that the band would see its existence end in 2022 following the death of founding drummer Thore Pettersen, who died in a road accident; instead, they are back on stage, more determined than ever to keep the passion and creativity alive.
Today they are composed of Sondre Skollevoll (guitar, vocals, backing vocals, synthesizers, piano, double bass, desert bass, banjo, percussion, programming, string and brass arrangements), Lars Christian Bjørknes (synthesizers, piano, organs, melodica, percussion, backing vocals, programming, string and brass arrangements) and Christian Fredrik Holtsteen (bass, fretless bass). With them is a large list of special guests, especially, as can be guessed, on drums (Billy Rymer above all), but also strings, given the symphonic treatment of many of the tracks. Frontman Sondre Skollevoll delivers an excellent vocal performance, always clean and perfectly suited to the fun lyrics; perhaps it is one of the best voices on today’s scene.
Metal interventions are not missing either, but I’m sure the purest listeners of the genre won’t even notice them, they are so cleverly inserted into the contexts.
Numerous time changes and structural complexities, which only occasionally remind me of the modus operandi of the American band Echolyn. The themes talk about life stories seen as a game of poker (or pachinko), existence, faith, fame, loss and the search for authentic connections, turning pain into hope.
“Pachinko” is a multifaceted showcase of the many instruments used, full of adrenaline (“King Among Kittens” and “Take Me To The City”), but also of beautiful ballads, as in the case of “Make Things Easier”. Guitars are important in Moron Police’s music, but the ever‑present and abundant keyboards of Lars Bjørknes are no less so; everyone is a stunning musician. Dynamic variations are a daily part of the compositions.
I could describe the album as a concept of physical, sweaty, grandiloquent music, but I think I’ve already been exhaustive enough on that. The same “Pachinko”, in its sixteen‑minute length, is the litmus test.
Perfection is often brushed against, and that doesn’t displease the most avid fans of the genre.
According to many, “Pachinko” is one of the albums that could end up among the best of the year; indeed, everything is here, especially the melodies to sing along with them. However, I warn that after the listening you’ll end up with a really full belly, a lot of material to digest. Strength? Weakness? It all comes down to personal taste; the fact remains that they don’t make hostages: here you either live or you die. Wow, what a blast! MS
