Mr.
Bison - The Garden Of Forgotten Dreams Heavy
Psych Sounds Genere:
Heavy Rock/Psichedelico/Prog Stoner Supporto: LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026
Noi
fratelli Salvadori), la band incide “Echoes From The Universe” (2024), virando
line-up attuale è composta da Matteo Barsacchi (chitarra, synth), Matteo
Sciocchetto (voc, basso, chitarra), Davide Salvadori (chitarra, synth) e
Lorenzo Salvadori (batteria). Questo
nuovo “The Garden Of Forgotten Dreams” lavora attorno al concetto del
impeccabile, “The Garden Of Forgotten Dreams” consacra definitivamente i Mr.
Bison nell'élite del Rock Psichedelico contemporaneo. Un album ricco di
sfumature, coraggioso negli arrangiamenti e liricamente profondo, da assaporare
tutto d'un fiato. MS

Bison - The Garden Of Forgotten Dreams Heavy
Psych Sounds Genre:
Heavy Rock/Psychedelic/Prog Stoner Format:
LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026
In recent years, we Italians have become very skilled
at playing Stoner rock; if we then interweave other genres like Hard Rock,
Psychedelia, and Prog, the final result becomes truly endowed with great
personality. The Tuscan band Mr. Bison formed in 2009 in Cecina
(Livorno) and made their debut in 2012 with “We'll Be Brief”, but caught wider
attention with “Asteroid” (2016), beginning to expand their horizons toward
more narrative structures. Only with “Holy Oak” (2018) and especially with the
maritime concept album “Seaward” (2020) did they refine their psychedelic
elements and Progressive component. With the introduction of synths and an expanded
line-up (including the contribution of the Salvadori brothers), the band
recorded “Echoes From The Universe” (2024), shifting decisively toward Space Rock,
modern Prog, and lysergic Post-Rock. The current line-up consists of Matteo
Barsacchi (guitar, synth), Matteo Sciocchetto (lead vocals, bass, guitar),
Davide Salvadori (guitar, synth), and Lorenzo Salvadori (drums). This new album, “The Garden Of Forgotten Dreams”,
revolves around the concept of the "Garden" as a metaphorical refuge
for the soul: a magical place where set-aside aspirations, forgotten dreams,
and inner lights and shadows do not wither, but remain preserved waiting to be
rediscovered. The work was produced and recorded by Matteo Barsacchi at Blotch
Recording Studio in Tuscany, mixed by Richard Behrens (Big Snuff Studio,
Berlin), and mastered by Carl Saff in Chicago. The opening track, “Cosmic Tide”, makes a huge impact,
starting from mid-tempo, rhythmic riffs of clear Stoner/Space Rock origin
before opening up into epic and psychedelic dynamics. The interplay between
synthesizers and saturated guitars creates the sensation of colliding with a
cosmic wave. The lyrics represent the initial storm surge—the external (or
internal) force that uproots the individual from daily noise and drags them to
the threshold of the "Garden." The theme is the flow of existence and
the impulse not to resist change. The sonic architecture of the title track turns
cinematic, with atmospheric synth textures and enveloping arpeggios exploding
into majestic walls of guitar. It is the conceptual heart of the album: the
entry into the place where every unexpressed desire vegetates like a silent
flower. The lyrics invite us to rediscover parts of ourselves thought to be
lost and to accept our past without regret. The vocal performance is strong,
and the bass-and-drums rhythm section proves to be well-oiled and effective. Clocking in at over seven minutes, “Bright Shadow”
plays on the balance between darkness and luminosity. The approach draws
heavily from Prog and Post-Rock, alternating hypnotic/ambient sections with
rhythmic accelerations of great melodic breath. A few splinters of Tool
effectively slice through the track. Tighter and more direct in tempo, “Astray” revives the
gritty energy of the band's Stoner/Heavy Rock period while retaining a delicate
weave of keyboards that broadens its spatiality. The text deals with
disorientation—the moment when one loses their way (literally
"astray"). It is the lyrical representation of doubt, a necessary
passage before truly finding one's inner truth. Next comes “Turn To Stone”, a highly psychedelic
movement rich in guitar echoes and vast spatiality. Here, it evokes the feeling
of petrification and paralysis in the face of pain or the judgments of the
outside world, as well as taking refuge in stillness to protect one's
fragility. Among the album's most Prog moments is “The Sunrise”,
characterized by dreamy synth and guitar work that simulates the gradual
increase of light. It is the awakening within the Garden, where night gives way
to morning and a strong sense of hope, reconciliation, and clarity regarding
one's journey is felt. Mr. Bison turn up the decibels in “River Moan”, a
track that also looks back toward their Hard Rock past, where the "moan of
the river" becomes a symbol of time flowing inexorably—carrying away the
debris of the past while also cleansing wounds. Water thus transforms into an
element of moral purification. The closing track, “Old Hue”, perfectly synthesizes
all the album's distinct souls: Stoner power, Prog sophistication, and
ambient-space scenery. The finale unfolds in a crescendo orchestrated with
great compositional maturity. One emerges from the Garden not radically
changed, but finally reconciled with the nuances of their own history. Amid walls of
guitars, symphonic keyboard architectures, and an impeccable rhythm section,
“The Garden Of Forgotten Dreams” definitively consecrates Mr. Bison among the elite
of contemporary Psychedelic Rock. An album rich in nuances, courageous in its
arrangements, and lyrically profound—to be savored all in one breath. MS
RUSSIAN
CIRCLES – Nine Autoproduzione Genere:
Post Rock / Math Rock Supporto: Bandcamp – 2026
Tre,
These Arms Are Snakes).
carattere quasi rituale e monolitico. Serve
finale. In
coordinate Doom e Sludge Metal. Si salvi chi può. “Nine”
Comunque siete avvisati. Dimenticavo… Non
ci crederete, ma mi è piaciuto! MS

Three is the magic number: or so they say, and this
“rule” often holds true in Rock music as well. Bass, guitar, and drums are all it takes to build
atmospheres and soundscapes that are anything but predictable. And which realm
of Rock is best suited to hypnotize and unbalance the listener? Lately, one
could argue it’s Post Rock—and when it merges with Math Rock, unexpected twists
are guaranteed. Naturally, this music demands a different kind of
active listening compared to what the casual music lover is used to, because in
this realm you can be heavier than Metal simply through relentless,
claustrophobic riffs. Simply put, with Russian Circles we are beyond Rock! Russian Circles formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 2004,
founded by guitarist Mike Sullivan and drummer Dave Turncrantz, who were
initially joined by bassist Colin DeKuiper. Right from the start, the group
established a signature sound built on the interplay between the sweeping
atmosphere of Post Rock, the complex metric structures of Math Rock, and the
sonic impact of Post Metal, opting for a purely instrumental approach. Following their debut “Enter” (2006), DeKuiper
departed from the lineup. In 2007, Brian Cook (formerly of Botch and These Arms
Are Snakes) stepped in permanently on bass and synthesizers. The
Sullivan-Turncrantz-Cook trio thus solidified as the immovable core of the band
for the next twenty years. “Nine” is indeed their ninth studio album, raw energy
and fury bursting from every single track. Right off the bat, “Borehole” lays
down the main thematic line over which Dave Turncrantz’s rhythmic patterns
interlock. The track moves in a steady crescendo, with Mike Sullivan’s guitar
layering anxiety-inducing riffs and tapping lines, turning the intro into a
full-blown Post Metal sonic explosion. Another crushing blow arrives with “Empath”: ushered
in by electronic hums and frequencies, the track develops around tight,
aggressive riffing. Compared to the opener, “Empath” leans into tighter tempos
and an intensely pounding rhythm section, where the synergy between bass and
drums takes on an almost ritualistic, monolithic character. A moment to catch one's breath is needed, and
“Eluvial” delivers just that. Across its eight minutes, it features a
pronounced dive into analog synthesizers shaping repetitive,
kosmische/motorik-style sequences. The heavy metallic foundation temporarily
yields to airier, sci-fi textures, allowing the guitars to layer progressively
until the final deflagration. In “E2”, the timbral explorations continue with a
complex, interlocking harmonic-rhythmic framework. The guitar lines adopt
intricate solutions reminiscent of vintage Progressive Rock, backed by a
multifaceted rhythmic texture that marries the firepower of Math Rock with a
dense wall of distortion. “Meridian” plays on the contrast between built-up
tension and dynamic release. Constructed around expanded arpeggios and ambient
backdrops, it unfolds through long guitar phrasing and rhythmic swells,
highlighting the trio’s knack for balancing moments of stillness with noisy
outbursts. At this point, your ears get a sigh of relief with the
melancholic, brief instrumental interlude “Arletta”. Its predominantly acoustic
nature leads smoothly into the devastating “Seventh Seal”, a track clearly
leaning toward Doom and Sludge Metal coordinates. Every man for himself. “Nine” is an album of thunderous music, but if you are
a fan of these sonorities, you’ll be calling it a masterpiece—I’m sure of it.
Consider yourselves warned, though. I almost forgot… You won't believe it, but I loved it! MS
RED
SAND - A World Without War OSKAR Records Genere: Neo Prog Supporto: LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026
Come
progetto prende ufficialmente forma con l'album d'esordio “Mirror Of Insanity”
avvolgenti e strutture narrative estese. L'album
“A World Without War” si inserisce perfettamente in questa linea evolutiva,
So
brano “Stories Of Liars” apre l'album puntando l'indice contro l'ipocrisia dei
Prog in effetti è così. Finita
Semplicemente
splendido! La
prima suite dell’album porta il titolo “The Ballad Of Edgar And Chelsea”, in
Floyd epoca “Wish You Were Here”, Pendragon e Camel, il tutto legato dalla
Segue
“A World Of Change”, malinconica ballata acustica che mi rimanda a Clive Nolan
MS

SAND - A World Without War OSKAR
Records Genre:
Neo Prog Format:
LP / CD / Bandcamp – 2026
How wonderful a world without war would be, but as
long as man thinks only of money and power, we will never get out of it. The
title of the new album (their thirteenth) by Canadian band Red Sand is a good
omen and a wish for all of us. Red Sand, led by guitarist and composer Simon Caron,
represent one of the most solid and consistent acts on the Canadian Neo Prog
scene (and particularly in Québec). Formed in the early 2000s, their music is deeply
rooted in the classic 70s Progressive Rock tradition and 80s British Neo Prog
(Fish-era Marillion, Pendragon, IQ, etc.). The project officially took shape with their debut
album “Mirror Of Insanity” (2005), featuring the expressive vocal tone of original
singer Hëmel and the lyrical melodies of Caron's guitar. Over the years, the
line-up has undergone several changes, but Simon Caron has maintained the
band's distinctive stylistic hallmark through deeply emotional and extended
guitar solos (often in the style of David Gilmour), enveloping keyboard
textures, and expansive narrative structures. The album “A World Without War” fits perfectly into
this evolutionary path, focusing on a dark and sadly ever-timely conceptual
theme: human conflict, its moral causes, the weight of isolation, and the
fragile hope for a world free of war. I already know what to expect from their music across
the album's six tracks; I've always followed them because they stick to the
rules—even their album artwork is in the fully detailed (almost Naïve) Neo Prog
style. So they certainly won't disappoint me, but let's see if that holds true. The track “Stories Of Liars” opens the album by
pointing the finger at the hypocrisy of political leaders and
truth-manipulators. The "stories of liars" represent the propaganda
that precedes and justifies every armed conflict. A dramatic keyboard opening
serves as an introduction before bringing the rest of the instruments in with
energy. Immediately, the electric guitar takes center stage over a flawless,
dynamic rhythm section featuring shifts in time signature and style. The
musical chorus sticks relentlessly in your mind—that's Neo Prog for you. Once this ride is over, it’s time for “I'll Be Alone”.
Here, the harmonic progression becomes more melancholic and sparse, hovering
between Pink Floyd (thanks in part to the slide guitar) and Marillion. The
track builds with steady dynamics until it culminates in a dramatic central
passage, crowned by an elegiac guitar solo reminiscent of the expressive style
of Steve Rothery and Andy Latimer. Simply splendid! The album's first suite bears the title “The Ballad Of
Edgar And Chelsea”. In nearly 12 minutes, Red Sand showcase the full showcase
of classic Neo Prog. The beginning is gentle, almost acoustic, before
developing continuous shifts in tempo and atmosphere. Symphonic sections
dominated by keyboards alternate with vocal passages rich in pathos. The lyrics
tell a personal story shattered by war: Edgar and Chelsea embody the tragedy of
severed affection—the innocence of young love destroyed by the brutality of
events and the call to arms. And then comes the centerpiece of the entire album, “A
World Without War”, a monstrous suite of over 20 minutes addressing the
desolation of the present and the utopian search for lasting peace. The lyrics
reflect on history's cyclical folly and humanity's need for spiritual
redemption. There are nods to Genesis, Pink Floyd during the “Wish You Were
Here” era, Pendragon, and Camel, all held together by the distinct personality
of the three musicians, who truly have skill to spare. Next is “A World Of Change”, a melancholic acoustic
ballad that brings to mind Clive Nolan (Pendragon), touching and deeply felt by
the artists themselves, especially in the vocals. And it closes with
“Torpille”: the track serves as an epilogue and a bitter final reflection. The
title evokes a sense of being struck down and the feeling of being hit right in
the heart ("torpillé") by the impossibility of changing man's
destructive nature—much like my opening thoughts that served as a preamble to
this review. A poignant guitar solo pierces my soul; I can no longer open my
eyes as I listen, and this, my friends, is the magic of Neo Prog. Yes, Red Sand haven't disappointed me once again, but deep
down I already knew that, because true class never fades. A pity for those who
don't get them. MS
OK GOODNIGHT – Stop/Go Autoproduzione / Kscope Genere: Progressive Metal Supporto: CD / Bandcamp – 2026
Williams (testi, voce, cori), Martín De Lima (tastiere, chitarre,
orchestrazioni, cori), Augusto Bussio (batteria, chitarre, cori) e Peter De
chitarra), Ella Wilhelmina (sax, sax soprano, clarinetto, flauto) e Rodolfo
Moreno (sax). Musicalmente
moderne e grandi linee melodiche.
energia e virtuosismo (Go).
Vi ritroverete come sulle montagne russe. Il
Djent ci sorprende in “Top Of The Bottom”, assieme a un lavoro ritmico serrato
interventi elettronici a supporto.
Ancora
ritmiche in grande evidenza in “Humpty Dumpty ("Some Body!")”,
dell'album. Altra bella sorpresa è “The People”, godetene sia il cantato che le
coralità. In conclusione giunge “Where I'm From”, inizialmente raffinato e
Ascolto obbligato. MS

This is what I love listening to in Progressive Metal
today: no more of the usual copy-pasting from the masters (even if a few nods
are always welcome), but rather an evolution of influences blended with rightly
modern sounds and material. And finally, a female lead voice too (and what a
voice)! I am talking about the American band (from Boston) Ok

Martín De Lima (keyboards, guitars, orchestrations, backing vocals), Augusto

virtuosity with modern Djent textures and great melodic lines. Every single
track features a truly articulate structural arrangement, crafted down to the
finest detail; all of this is further elevated by an instrumental technique
that is certainly well above the average for such releases, particularly when
it comes to the rhythm section. Ten distinct soundscapes are packed into this release,
each different from the next, ensuring that over the course of its forty-seven
minutes of music, there is never a dull moment. The lyrics revolve around the concept of emotional and
dynamic duality, oscillating constantly between moments of contemplative
stillness (Stop) and bursts of energy and virtuosity (Go). The lyrics, penned
by Casey Lee Williams, explore themes of vulnerability, social pressure, the
search for identity, and the daily anxiety of modern life. The opening track, “No Sound”, begins with ethereal
atmospheres before exploding into infectious bass grooves played by Peter De
Reyna and syncopated riffs. Casey Lee Williams' vocals range effortlessly from
vulnerable registers to rasping high notes. And amazement grips us right away.
The "no sound" describes the inability to communicate one's pain and
the inner silence that precedes a personal crisis. The first single taken from the album is titled “22”,
featuring odd time signatures typical of Prog Metal. It blends the technical
sophistication of De Lima's and Bussio's keyboards and guitars with a
high-impact Pop-Alternative chorus. You will find yourself on a rollercoaster
ride. Djent catches us by surprise in “Top Of The Bottom”,
alongside tight, driving drum work. Tense verses alternate with wide-open
harmonic sections, reflecting on the paradox of settling for superficial, minor
successes while remaining trapped in emotional distress. The mood shifts with “The Game”, initially delicate
before blossoming into a theatrical and expressive vocal performance amidst
sudden time changes and supporting electronic elements. The lyrics use the
metaphor of the game to critique imposed social and work rules, telling of the
frustration of having to conform to please others' expectations. Yet the surprises continue unabated with “Spiral”, a
dramatic crescendo that begins with intimate tones before spiraling into a
vortex of complex arrangements. The spiral is a mental one, where the flow of
negative thoughts falls back into a vicious cycle. The track is, at times,
sheer high class. “Call Me Away” is a brief, ethereal interlude centered
on delicate arrangements and Casey Lee’s solo vocals, expressing a desperate
desire for escape and a search for serenity away from daily chaos. As alluring
as a Jessica Rabbit of sorts. There is also a highly intricate and
"progressive" movement titled “The Show”, combining theatrical Rock
and contemporary Prog with marked and eccentric dynamics, just so nothing is
left out. Rhythms take center stage once again in “Humpty Dumpty
("Some Body!")”, characterized by continuous stop-and-go patterns
that directly echo the album's title. Another delightful surprise is “The
People”—enjoy both the lead vocals and the backing harmonies. Finally comes
“Where I'm From”, initially refined and almost World-inflected, before evolving
progressively in the way the band has now accustomed us to. This album by the band is a fresh, visceral,
technically flawless record that always remains at the service of emotion and
human storytelling. Essential listening. MS

Sempre
In
interiore e dissoluzione dell'ego. Generalmente, fra le note scaturiscono
sintetizzatori atmosferici, ritmiche dub lente e profonde, linee di basso
avvolgenti, campionamenti etnici e strumenti tradizionali asiatici, creando un
viaggio sonoro immersivo. In
“She
Who Flows” è dedicata all'energia femminile della creazione (Shakti) e
psichedelico. In
“Not Two” sembra di trovarsi in panorami estesi dove la struttura musicale
all'interno della propria consapevolezza.
Sonoramente
non distante giunge “The Coiled Snake”, fra misticismo e visceralità.
“Together We Flow”, mentre la rarefatta “Samudra” chiude l’album senza togliere
o aggiungere altro all’insieme. “Beyond,
Comunque interessante. MS

WEEDS MUSIC - Beyond, Within Self-released Genre:
Ambient Psychedelia Format:
Bandcamp – 2026
More and more individuals are approaching music as a
one-man band, thanks in part to technologies that allow for low-cost album
production today. This is not always synonymous with low quality, because when
one has something to say, ideas spring forth with vigor and the results are
often intriguing. In this case, behind the moniker Floating Weeds Music
is Italian musician and composer Federico Fabrizi, who is active in independent
sound research. His musical path is characterized by a strongly eclectic
approach, ranging from avant-garde Prog Rock to futuristic World Music, by way
of Psychedelia and meditative Ambient. Floating Weeds Music is conceived as an open
laboratory in which to explore the fusion of classic and electric instruments,
synthesizers, and ethnic or ritualistic elements. His artistic research is
rooted in a deep interest in Eastern philosophies, spirituality (Kundalini),
and structural experimentation, creating immersive soundscapes dedicated to the
concepts of inner journeys and ego dissolution. Atmospheric synthesizers, slow
and deep dub rhythms, enveloping basslines, ethnic sampling, and traditional
Asian instruments generally flow between the notes, creating an immersive sonic
journey. In “Beyond, Within” there are eight tracks spanning
over fifty minutes of music. Among the instrumentation used to achieve the
album's sound, alongside classic guitars and so forth, tabla, sitar, and
bansuri stand out. The artist poses questions such as: “Why do we humans
(or at least some of us) feel the need to reconnect with a higher state of
consciousness?”, “What is consciousness?”, “Does a higher reality exist? Is
this material world just an illusion?”, all of which serve as driving forces
behind the entire journey. “She Who Flows” is dedicated to the feminine energy of
creation (Shakti) and represents the uninterrupted flow of life. The flowing
female figure symbolizes change and the stream of consciousness surrendering to
becoming. A calm, essential dub bassline anchors the track, while soft synths
and expanded echoes recreate the fluid progression of a river. The electric
guitar reinforces the whole, immersing the listener in a psychedelic context. In “Not Two,” one feels placed within vast panoramas
where the musical structure works by subtraction, leaving wide open spaces of
silence and reverberation. The title directly recalls the experience of
Non-Duality (in Sanskrit Advaita, which translates to "Not Two"). The
lyrics and vocal samples explore the illusion of separation between the
observer and the external world, where there is no division between the self
and the whole. The title track creates a sense of spatial expansion,
while a hypnotic dub groove guides the listener toward a contemplative,
meditative dimension. A listen for the soul. The paradox of the title explores
the principle that what lies "beyond" (the cosmos, the divine) is
found precisely "within" one's own awareness. It is an invitation to
turn one's gaze from the outside in to discover the infinite nature of the
mind. Sonically not far off comes “The Coiled Snake,”
hovering between mysticism and visceral intensity. The rhythms suggest a slow,
spiraling, ascending movement. The direct reference is to Kundalini, the
primordial energy represented as a coiled snake at the base of the spine. The
music symbolically describes the awakening of this spiritual force through the
energy centers (chakras). There is also a brief instrumental interlude titled
“Naga,” which immerses the listener in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The track
acts as a contemplative, ritualistic bridge to the second half of the album,
which resumes with “Naja Naja,” the scientific name of the Indian cobra. The
atmosphere remains consistent, continuously sustained by the omnipresent
bassline, tabla, and sitar. The vocals deliver a hypnotic chant that enfolds
the listener. Another deep journey into the self comes from the
psychedelic (especially in the guitar work) “Together We Flow,” while the
rarefied “Samudra” closes the album without adding or subtracting anything
further from the whole. “Beyond, Within” undoubtedly possesses a conceptual
charm and indisputable timbral care, but it suffers from an underlying
stillness that turns the inner journey into a long wait for the first dynamic
event. An ideal work to put on in the background during yoga sessions. Still,
interesting. MS

DICK – Moby Dick Akarma
Records Genere:
Hard Rock Supporto:
LP / Bandcamp – 1973 / 2001
Anche
noi in Italia abbiamo avuto nei primi anni ’70 i nostri Led Zeppelin
Sommor Records / Guerssen (2024–2026), etichetta spagnola specializzata in
Psichedelia, Hard Rock e Prog anni '60/'70.
piccolissima etichetta indipendente campana A.B. Record (cat. AB 01). I
sfumature Funk, Soul e Blues.
mente creatrice e autore principale), Tonino Esposito (basso), Lino Muoio
(batteria e percussioni) e Piero Framond (tastiere, presente nelle fasi
successive e nelle registrazioni estese). Inseriti
stampa Akarma comprende dieci canzoni e basta ascoltare la prima, “Two Timing
ritmiche elevate. In
complesso d'inferiorità verso i mostri sacri dell'Hard Blues anglosassone
d'archivio. Sorprendente! MS

MOBY
DICK – Moby Dick Akarma
Records Genre:
Hard Rock Format:
LP / Bandcamp – 1973 / 2001
Even here in Italy, back in the early '70s, we had our
very own Neapolitan Led Zeppelin, even if we didn't even notice! It's a strange
story that I will try to tell you. First of all, let me tell you that the album “Moby
Dick” was not released in the '70s at the time of its recording, but was
retrieved and distributed decades later through various record labels
specializing in collecting and underground reissues. The first and most famous
official release of this archival material dates back to 2001 by the historic
Italian label Akarma (a sub-label of Comet Records), issued both in LP/vinyl
format (cat. AK 1028) and as a CD Digibook. Subsequently, it was reissued by
Bull's-Eye (2009 / 2016) for the American and European markets, and finally by
Sommor Records / Guerssen (2024–2026), a Spanish label specialized in '60s/'70s
Psychedelia, Hard Rock, and Prog. As for the original era (1973), the only two tracks
released as a 7" single (“Free Wheelin Cat” and “Provisional Baby Hip”)
came out on the tiny independent label A.B. Record (cat. AB 01) from Campania. Moby Dick therefore represent one of the most
fascinating, elusive, and intricate gems of the Italian Hard Rock and Prog
Blues scene. Active in the fervent and volcanic Neapolitan scene—the very same
that saw famous acts like Osanna, Cervello, Il Balletto di Bronzo, Napoli
Centrale, and Uno sprout and flourish—Moby Dick chose a direct, energetic
stylistic path strongly anchored in the Anglo-American sound, oriented toward
guitar-driven Hard Rock with heavy Funk, Soul, and Blues overtones. The band formed in Naples between the late '60s and
early '70s. The historic lineup featured musicians endowed with formidable
technique and exceptional rhythmic drive: Enzo Granato (lead guitar and lead
vocals, mastermind and main songwriter), Tonino Esposito (bass), Lino Muoio
(drums and percussion), and Piero Framond (keyboards, present in later phases
and extended recordings). Embedded in the vibrant local live circuit of the
period, they took part in some of the most important Pop and Avant-Garde
festivals of the time, making a name for themselves through their explosive
live impact. Despite the formidable quality of their repertoire, the band
failed to release an official LP back then. The Akarma pressing includes ten tracks, and listening
to the first one, “Two Timing Girl”, is enough to understand how deeply the
band was inspired by Plant, Page, and company. The track opens with a sharp,
high-impact, energetic riff, heavily indebted to British Hard Rock in the vein
of Free, Humble Pie, and indeed, early Led Zeppelin. The rhythm section of
Esposito (not the famous one of “Kalimba De Luna” fame) and Muoio grinds out a
tight 4/4 groove, while Granato's guitar chops aggressive chords and launches
into an acidic, distorted solo. The lyrics tell the classic tale of betrayal
and emotional double-dealing ("two-timing"). The lyrical tone is
typical of visceral Rock'n'Roll, complete with anger, disappointment, and empowerment
from a toxic relationship with an unfaithful woman. “Free Wheelin Cat”, originally released as the A-side
of the 1973 7" single, is a track driven by a pulsing, round bassline. The
flavor is distinctly Funk Rock, featuring a rhythmic use of the wah-wah guitar
that recalls American vibes akin to Grand Funk Railroad or James Gang. For the rest, the album revolves around what has been
described, offering good musical solutions and high-octane rhythms. Ultimately, Moby Dick's self-titled album is a sharp,
powerful snapshot of what could have been and never was. A record that suffers
from no inferiority complex whatsoever toward the sacred monsters of
Anglo-Saxon Hard Blues of that era, proving how early '70s Naples was a
creative cauldron far broader than just symphonic prog or the Napoli Centrale
style. An interesting retrieval for anyone wishing to fully grasp the most
visceral, dusty, and authentic offshoots of archival Italian Rock. Surprising!
