I napoletani Presence sono una delle punte di diamante del Rock Progressivo Italiano moderno.
Si formano nei primi anni ’90 per il volere di tre grandi artisti, Enrico Iglio (tastiere, percussioni), Sophya Baccini (voce), figlia di tenore, e Sergio Casamassima (chitarra, basso), laureato al Los Angeles Guitar Institute of Technology.
Nei sei album in studio, escluso l’EP live, i Presence hanno dimostrato di avere una forte personalità nell’ambito, andando a pescare nel Prog più Dark e nel Metal Prog. Nel tempo hanno palesato l’amore per certe band realizzandone delle cover, quali Queen, Judas Priest e Rainbow.
Conosciamo già la splendida voce di Baccini, ne abbiamo avuto modo di parlarne anche nella sua ottima carriera solista composta di tre album davvero interessanti che vi consiglio di andare a riascoltare. Oggi propongono “Them”, settimo album in studio formato da otto brani inediti dopo “Masters And Following” (Black Widow) del 2016. La crescita artistica si può apprezzare ascoltando album dopo album, una consapevolezza che li conduce a comporre canzoni sempre più curate e coinvolgenti.
L’oscurità della musica e quella di alcuni testi che accompagnano i brani, è intuibile sin dalla copertina dell’album per mano di  Alex Reale, ancora una volta dal fascino tetro.
L’inesorabile passaggio del tempo e l’avvicinarsi della fine dell’esistenza terrena, è l’argomento trattato nell’opner mini suite “The Undead”. Il graffiante riff alterna aperture sinfoniche a partiture Heavy spezzate dall’intervento del piano. Notevole l’assolo di chitarra finale. Angoscia e pesantezza s’interscambiano in una struttura di base Progressive Rock, dove la dolce voce contrasta con le ambientazioni, prerogativa dello stile Presence. Cosa sarebbe successo, invece, se nella vita avessimo preso differenti scelte da quelle attuate? E’ il quesito che il trio si pone in “Aftermath”.  
L’organo fa sfoggio di se all’inizio del brano mentre il cielo si annuvola. L’Heavy Prog si dirama in percorsi frazionati da cambi umorali. Alcune atmosfere possono essere accostate a quelle di band nordiche, dove nuovamente lo stile greve si incastona nell’eleganza vocale di Sophya.  La orchestrata e strumentale “Dance Macabre” conduce all’ennesima mini suite dal titolo “To Eatch Other”. Il pezzo può essere apprezzato dai fans della band Curved Air. La struttura vigorosa si accosta anche al mondo del Gothic su temi che riguardano l’approccio alla guerra e di come ci si può giungere degenerando.
A questo punto, se non sazi delle grandi emozioni provate sin qui, si arriva alla suite di ventitré minuti che da il titolo all’album, “Them”. L’orchestra ricopre un ruolo importante e si ispira alla musica dei primi del Novecento con riferimenti a Stravinsky e Berg. In analisi le invidie e le gelosie che si possono provare nei confronti delle persone. Questa, lasciatemelo dire,  non è una canzone bensì una vera e propria opera Rock che travalica il mondo del Rock Progressivo. Serve spezzare l’ascolto dopo cotanta abbondanza, e i maturi Presence lo sanno alla perfezione, per questo inseriscono la breve e medioevale “Drawbridge”. Segue il secondo pezzo strumentale dell’album, “Stige”, vetrina per le qualità balistiche della chitarra elettrica di Casamassima. Chiude l’incoraggiante “If You Dare”, canzone delicata e riflessiva nei confronti della capacità di saper affrontare gli eventi della vita.
“Them” è un ulteriore tassello nel puzzle Dark Prog Italiano, dove dimostriamo di essere grandi maestri, questo soprattutto grazie al supporto della Black Widow, sempre sul pezzo al riguardo. Eccellenza. MS

The Neapolitans Presence are one of the spearheads of modern Italian Progressive Rock.
They were formed in the early 1990s by the will of three great artists, Enrico Iglio (keyboards, percussion), Sophya Baccini (vocals), daughter of tenor, and Sergio Casamassima (guitar, bass), a graduate of the Los Angeles Guitar Institute of Technology.
In their six studio albums, excluding the live EP, Presence have demonstrated a strong personality in the field, trawling the darkest Prog and Metal Prog. Over time they have manifested a love for certain bands by performing covers of them, such as Queen, Judas Priest and Rainbow.
We already know Baccini's wonderful voice, we had the opportunity to talk about it also in his excellent solo career composed of three really interesting albums that I recommend you to go and listen again. Today they offer “Them”, their seventh studio album consisting of eight unreleased tracks after 2016's “Masters And Following” (Black Widow). The artistic growth can be appreciated by listening to album after album, an awareness that leads them to compose more and more polished and engaging songs.
The darkness of the music and that of some of the lyrics that accompany the songs, can be sensed right from the album cover at the hands of Alex Reale, once again with a gloomy charm.
The inexorable passage of time and the approaching end of earthly existence, is the topic covered in the opner mini-suite “The Undead”. The scratchy riff alternates between symphonic openings and heavy scores broken up by piano intervention. The final guitar solo is notable. Angst and heaviness interchange in a basic Progressive Rock structure, where the sweet voice contrasts with the settings, prerogative of the Presence style. What would have happened, however, if we had made different choices in life from those implemented? That is the question the trio asks in “Aftermath”. 
The organ shows off at the beginning of the track as the sky clouds over. Heavy prog branches out into paths fractionated by mood changes. Some atmospheres can be likened to those of Nordic bands, where again the raw style is embedded in Sophya's vocal elegance.  The orchestrated and instrumental “Dance Macabre” leads to yet another mini-suite entitled “To Eatch Other”. The piece may be appreciated by fans of the band Curved Air. The vigorous structure also approaches the world of Gothic on themes concerning the approach to war and how degenerating can come to it.
At this point, if not satiated with the great emotions experienced so far, we come to the twenty-three-minute suite that gives the album its title, “Them”. The orchestra plays an important role and is inspired by early twentieth-century music with references to Stravinsky and Berg. In analysis are the envies and jealousies one can feel toward people. This, let me tell you, is not a song but a real Rock opera that transcends the world of Progressive Rock. You need to break up the listening after such abundance, and the mature Presence know this perfectly, which is why they insert the short, medieval “Drawbridge”. The album's second instrumental piece, “Stige”, follows, a showcase for the ballistic qualities of Casamassima's electric guitar. It closes with the encouraging “If You Dare”, a delicate and reflective song toward the ability to cope with life's events.
“Them” is one more piece in the Italian Dark Prog puzzle, where we prove to be great masters, this especially thanks to the support of Black Widow, always on the ball in this regard. Excellence. MS
