L’Hard Rock contaminato da altri generi come il Progressive Rock e il Funky, ha un fascino davvero personale, se poi a cantare è una voce femminile, allora tutto assume una forma di estrema eleganza. Ne sono consapevoli i liguri Black Pie, gruppo formatosi nel recente 2023 a Savona e composto di artisti noti nel campo come Elena “Hellen” Villa (voce, basso, mandolino), Claudio “Clode” Cinquegrana (chitarre, tastiere, cori), e Silvano “Syl” Bottari (batteria, percussioni).
Hellen ha un passato Rock di tutto rispetto, con i Malcondita vince il Sanremo Rock nel 2001, Syl è stato il batterista dei Vanexa, e Clode è un talentuoso chitarrista che ha militato nel gruppo storico Of New Trolls di Belleno e Di Palo.
Il trio s’incontra nell’estate del 2023 per suonare dal vivo in maniera personale brani che hanno fatto la storia del Rock, e una volta che il tour giunge al termine, decidono di creare materiale proprio. Il risultato è “Angels”, un concept in cui un’anima nasce e plana sul nostro pianeta per scegliere un corpo in cui vivere la propria esperienza di vita.
Per compiere al meglio il lavoro, i Black Pie si avvalgono della presenza dello special guest Stefano Genti alle tastiere e cori.
“Off The Radar” pone immediatamente all’attenzione del pubblico la voce di Elena Villa in una ballata dal sapore Folk. L’andamento ipnotico esaltato dalla chitarra riporta la mente nel passato, quando certi movimenti colpivano direttamente l’anima, qui protagonista del viaggio. Il Rock giunge con “Kaos Night” e allora si può apprezzare al meglio la malleabilità vocale plasmabile a ogni situazione. Trascinante il giro del basso e la parte finale in cui si adoperano le tastiere per apporre maggiore profondità all’ascolto, così l’uso dei cori.
I pezzi s’incastrano perfettamente nella formula canzone, pur avendo di base una cura per la melodia accurata, come nel caso di “Little Lady Bright”, dove il ritornello è gradevolmente armonioso.
E’ “Borderline” a far sfoggio dell’Hard Rock in maniera marcata, qui ancora una volta si può apprezzare il lavoro della chitarra, mai banale e rispettosa del passato stilistico del genere. Il Funky sopraggiunge con “Your Fault”, trascinante ed elegante. L’eclettico assolo della chitarra elettrica è la ciliegina sulla torta, sicuramente uno dei pezzi migliori dell’album. In “Welcome Toxic” questo fattore è esaltato alla potenza, parti psichedeliche conducono verso il mondo di Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) bilanciando l’andamento temporale. “People From The Sky” strutturalmente e vocalmente risulta essere una delle più curate dell’album, ammaliante e ruffiana. Torna il Funky e il Rock con “From The Ashes”, emblema del DNA Black Pie, qui tutte le caratteristiche descritte sino ad ora, tutte racchiuse in un unico brano.
 “Blanket Tide” evidenzia la capacità della batteria di Bottari, pulita e precisa, altro pezzo in cui il ritornello rimane impresso nella mente. In “Lift It” fuoriescono maggiormente alcuni richiami ai Porcupine Tree sopra una prova vocale ancora una volta eccellente. La title track conclude su un arpeggio caldo in stile Scorpions.
Questo album è consigliato agli amanti di band come Red Hot Chili Pepper, Porcupine Tree, Rush e a tutti coloro aperti di mente. Se cercate un album in cui cantare e allo stesso tempo godere di ottima musica, allora “Angels” fa decisamente per voi. Ecco che l’anima ha raggiunto il suo corpo. MS

Hard Rock contaminated by other genres such as Progressive Rock and Funky, has a truly personal charm, if then a female voice is singing, then everything takes on a form of extreme elegance. Ligurian band Black Pie, a group formed in recent 2023 in Savona and composed of such well-known artists in the field as Elena “Hellen” Villa (vocals, bass, mandolin), Claudio “Clode” Cinquegrana (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals), and Silvano “Syl” Bottari (drums, percussion) are aware of this.
Hellen has a respectable Rock past, with Malcondita winning Sanremo Rock in 2001, Syl was the drummer of Vanexa, and Clode is a talented guitarist who played in Belleno and Di Palo's historic group Of New Trolls.
The trio met in the summer of 2023 to play live in a personal way songs that have made rock history, and once the tour comes to an end, they decided to create their own material. The result is “Angels”, a concept in which a soul is born and flies to our planet to choose a body in which to experience life.
To best accomplish the work, Black Pie enlists the presence of special guest Stefano Genti on keyboards and backing vocals.
“Off The Radar” immediately brings Elena Villa's voice to the audience's attention in a Folk-flavored ballad. The hypnotic progression enhanced by the guitar takes the mind back to the past, when certain movements struck directly at the soul, here the protagonist of the journey. Rock comes with “Kaos Night” and then one can best appreciate the vocal malleability moldable to any situation. Pulling is the bass turn and the final part where keyboards are used to affix more depth to the listening, so is the use of choruses.
The pieces fit perfectly into the song formula, while having a basic care for accurate melody, as in the case of “Little Lady Bright”, where the refrain is pleasantly harmonious.
It is “Borderline” that shows off the Hard Rock in a pronounced way, here once again one can appreciate the guitar work, never trite and respectful of the stylistic past of the genre. The Funky overtakes with “Your Fault”, dragging and elegant. The eclectic electric guitar solo is the icing on the cake, surely one of the best pieces on the album. In “Welcome Toxic” this factor is heightened to the power, psychedelic parts lead toward the world of Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) balancing the tempo.
“People From The Sky” structurally and vocally turns out to be one of the most polished on the album, bewitching and pandering. Back to Funky and Rock with “From The Ashes”, emblematic of Black Pie DNA, here all the characteristics described so far all packed into one song.
 “Blanket Tide” highlights Bottari's drumming ability, clean and precise, another track where the chorus sticks in the mind. In “Lift It” some Porcupine Tree references come out more over once again excellent vocal evidence. The title track concludes on a warm Scorpions-style arpeggio.
This album is recommended for fans of bands like Red Hot Chili Pepper, Porcupine Tree, Rush and anyone open-minded. If you are looking for an album where you can sing along and enjoy great music at the same time, then “Angels” is definitely for you. Here the soul has reached its body. MS
