Sin dagli anni ’90 ho nutrito un particolare amore nei confronti delle band svedesi, non che io abbia una cattiva considerazione di tutto ciò che hanno fatto in precedenza nel Progressive Rock, ma in quel periodo hanno riposto nuova linfa al genere leggermente assopito grazie a gruppi come Landberk, Anglagard, Anekdoten, Sinkadus, The Flower Kings e altre ancora. Mentre negli anni ’80 per il Neo Prog le band di riferimento stilistico furono i Pink Floyd e i Genesis su tutte, per quest’ondata anni ’90 sono stati in principale modo i King Crimson. Da questo momento in poi sono stato molto attento a questa scena, non soltanto per mio piacere d’ascolto, ma proprio per assimilare al meglio l’essenza di questa musica spesso con tratti Dark e malinconici.
Fra i numerosi nomi che si possono citare in tempi moderni, uno di questi che più mi ha coinvolto per ecletticità sono i Khadavra.
Tanto Mellotron, ma anche una varietà di strumentazioni che fanno di questo sound un caleidoscopio sonoro.  Il gruppo formato da Sebastian (chitarra, voce, sitar, mellotron, synth, percussioni), Alexander Eriksson (batteria, voce, percussioni), Jon Klintö /(basso, chitarra acustica), e Marcus Holmström (tastiere, mellotron, synth, moog), si cimenta in un Prog dalle tinte scure, ma anche elettriche e psichedeliche. Le influenze che si possono estrapolare all’ascolto derivano da gruppi come Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Tool, Balck Sabbath, Anekdoten, King Crimson e Camel. Per la realizzazione di “Hologram” si avvalgono della partecipazione di Liv Fridén (flauto), Ole Mathis Haglund (chitarra, cori), Ola Lindqvist (flauto) e Nils Erichson Tastiere).
Come molti altri artisti del periodo, i Khadavra affrontano tematiche societarie del momento, con annesse problematiche scavando nella profondità del subconscio.
“Stundom” si presenta con un suono onirico in crescendo per gettare l’ascoltatore nel mondo di “Shapeshifter”, qui si è travolti dall’insieme sonoro fatto di particolari e robustezza strutturale, ma come da prassi Prog, è immediatamente spezzata da interventi prettamente acustici. La chitarra elettrica si esibisce in un assolo spettrale circondato di tastiere. Tanta storia in queste note, ma anche modernità al servizio della riuscita finale.
Sitar e flauto per “Lucid Parasitosis”, un movimento sinuoso dall’atmosfera psichedelica. Le percussioni arrangiano al meglio l’insieme… E poi l’oscurità. L’andamento Doom pone ulteriore angoscia all’ascolto. “Possession” è una suite di sedici minuti dove il sound ipnotico sa dare spazio a fughe strumentali altamente coinvolgenti. Effetti eco si stagliano assieme all’assolo di chitarra per dare quella sensazione d’instabilità confermata dall’imminente violenza sonora al confine dello stato d’animo doloroso… E poi la luce.
“Zoning Out” è il brano che non ti aspetti, più ritmato e allegro rispetto quanto ascoltato sino ad ora. La cura dei particolari prosegue attraverso effetti e arrangiamenti ben eseguiti. Un altro intro è “10102020”, quaranta secondi di tregua acustica conducente alla seconda mini suite “Katla”, un mix di suoni ben congeniati che fanno dei Khadavra una realtà intelligente e accurata. Qui il Mellotron da sfoggio delle sue caratteristiche. “Anhedonia” è ricca di aperture dall’ampio respiro, altra passeggiata nella Psichedelia. A seguire lo strumentale “Vemod”, uno dei pezzi più Prog nel senso puro del termine, fra i frangenti assolutamente migliori dell’intero album, con passaggi di chitarra elettrica, tastiere e flauto. La conclusiva title track “Hologram” innalza l’essere Khadavra, con meditazione e ampiezza, un viaggio pindarico ricco di cambi direzionali.
Quest’album per il sottoscritto è una conferma, perché è ciò che mi attendevo dalla band, un lavoro massiccio, ricco d’influenze e per certi versi destabilizzante, un classico trip a cui prestare il fianco. Potere del Prog Rock nordico! MS

Since the 1990s I have harbored a particular love for Swedish bands, not that I think badly of anything they have done previously in Progressive Rock, but during that time they have breathed new life into the slightly slumbering genre thanks to bands like Landberk, Anglagard, Anekdoten, Sinkadus, The Flower Kings and others. While in the 1980s for Neo Prog the stylistic reference bands were Pink Floyd and Genesis above all, for this 90s wave it was mainly King Crimson. From this time on I have been very attentive to this scene, not only for my listening pleasure, but precisely to assimilate the essence of this music often with Dark and melancholic traits as best I can.
Among the many names that can be mentioned in modern times, one of them that has most engaged me in eclecticism is Khadavra.
Lots of mellotron, but also a variety of instrumentation that makes this sound a sonic kaleidoscope.  The group made up of Sebastian (guitar, vocals, sitar, mellotron, synth, percussion), Alexander Eriksson (drums, vocals, percussion), Jon Klintö /(bass, acoustic guitar), and Marcus Holmström (keyboards, mellotron, synth, moog), tries its hand at dark-tinged Prog, but also electric and psychedelic. Influences that can be extrapolated upon listening come from bands such as Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Tool, Balck Sabbath, Anekdoten, King Crimson and Camel. On “Hologram” they enlist the participation of Liv Fridén (flute), Ole Mathis Haglund (guitar, backing vocals), Ola Lindqvist (flute) and Nils Erichson Keyboards).
Like many other artists of the period, Khadavra deals with societal issues of the moment, with attached problems by delving into the depths of the subconscious.
“Stundom” presents itself with a dreamy crescendo sound to throw the listener into the world of ‘Shapeshifter’, here one is overwhelmed by the sonic ensemble made up of detail and structural robustness, but as per Prog practice, it is immediately broken up by purely acoustic interventions. The electric guitar performs a ghostly solo surrounded by keyboards. So much history in these notes, but also modernity in the service of the final achievement.
Sitar and flute for “Lucid Parasitosis”, a meandering movement with a psychedelic atmosphere. Percussion arranges the whole at its best -- and then darkness. The doom progression poses further angst to the listening. “Possession” is a sixteen-minute suite where the hypnotic sound knows how to give way to highly engaging instrumental escapes. Echo effects stand out along with the guitar solo to give that feeling of instability confirmed by the impending sonic violence at the edge of the painful mood... And then the light.
“Zoning Out” is the track you don't expect, more rhythmic and upbeat than what we have heard so far. The attention to detail continues through well-executed effects and arrangements. Another intro is “10102020”, forty seconds of acoustic respite leading to the second mini-suite “Katla”, a mix of well-crafted sounds that make Khadavra a smart and accurate reality.
Here the Mellotron shows off its features. “Anhedonia” is full of wide-ranging openings, another stroll through Psychedelia. This is followed by the instrumental “Vemod”, one of the most Prog pieces in the purest sense of the word, among the absolutely best bangs of the entire album, with passages of electric guitar, keyboards and flute. The concluding title track “Hologram” elevates the Khadavra being, with meditation and breadth, a Pindaric journey full of directional changes.
This album for yours truly is a confirmation, for it is what I expected from the band, a massive work, rich in influences and in some ways destabilizing, a classic trip to lend one's side to. Power of Nordic Prog Rock! MS
