Se ci prendiamo l’onere di andare a spulciare accuratamente gli anni ’70 in ambito Rock, allora ci accorgiamo che questo periodo è costellato di micro opere degne di nota. Molteplici sono gli album che fanno della Psichedelia, oppure del Prog Rock, Hard Rock e simili, un mondo tutto da scoprire. Non si finisce mai di stupire, vuoi perché allora alcuni album sono stati male distribuiti e stampati in poche copie, oppure vuoi per un pubblico probabilmente saturo di questo genere di sonorità, visto che queste partono già dagli anni ’60, rimane il fatto che i collezionisti hanno il loro bel da fare e curano con estrema gelosia la copia a propria disposizione valutandola spesso con un prezzo elevato. A questo punto subentrano le beneamate (o odiate a seconda se si possiede la copia originale) ristampe, spesso ri-masterizzate, a portare giustizia a questi lavori oramai impolverati giacenti nell’oblio. Nascono addirittura case discografiche apposite per questo tipo di lavoro. Non è però questo il caso della Psych Up Melodies di Fabrizio Di Vicino che invece lavora con band odierne, ma resta anche attenta a certi prodotti datati e sempre Psichedelici. Si va a riscoprire un album molto interessante, quello dei francesi Nyl, nati dai Cheval Fou per mano del chitarrista Michel Peteau e del batterista Stéphane Rossini. Qui si avvalgono di vari collaboratori fra i quali spicca il bassista dei Magma, Jannick Top. Quest’unico album che ci relegano, viene anche ristampato nel 1993 dalla Legend Music, e nel 2011 appunto dalla Psych Up Melodies, mentre l’originale è datato 1976 per opera dell’Urus Records.
Il disco è suddiviso in due blocchi, il primo è l’album completo formato da otto canzoni più una bonus track, il secondo è l’operato live della band.
La musica proposta è infarcita d’influenze quali il Krautrock, Free Jazz e il sound di alcune band come Amon Duul, Magma, Gravity Train, Pink Floyd e Ange. L’artwork del libretto che accompagna il cd è documentato di foto degli anni che furono. Il suono del disco è buono.
Il disco si apre con un brano della durata di otto minuti dal titolo “Nyl” impreziosito da un flauto. Subito le carte sono in tavola, le chitarre psichedeliche giocano un ruolo fondamentale, così il ritmo insistente, tutto molto Space Rock, ma anche Zeuhl. Basta chiudere gli occhi e vi troverete a volteggiare nella stanza a braccia aperte. Si tira il respiro con la successiva “Abery”, vera e propria canzone che questa volta non volge all’improvvisazione, bensì alla melodia con strofe e ritornello. Voce leggermente acida ma gradevole in un pezzo al confine della ballata. Il profumo degli anni ’70 si sprigiona in tutto il suo fulgore in “Nyarlathotep”, da qui in avanti tutti brani brevi e incisivi, ricchi di cambi di tempo e umorali, ecco l’accostamento anche al Progressive Rock, come nella jazzata “Shatt” e il suo sax. Un encomio a parte per l’acustica “Ailes D’Or” cantata in lingua madre, il francese. Il pezzo gioca anche sulle voci maschili e femminili. A gusto personale, ritengo “Ibha” uno dei momenti migliori dell’album, ottima Psichedelia, pur essendo la conclusiva del primo blocco. Segue la breve bonus track, leggiera e impalpabile, fra suoni insistenti di sottofondo fatti con la chitarra e il sax in evidenza.
La seconda ondata del disco, quella live, porta con sé altre sorprese, come una scappata nel mondo improvvisato e rumoristico dei primi Pink Floyd in “Jaguar I” e “Jaguar II”. Qui si evince la carica espressiva ed emotiva che queste band in sede live riescono a rovesciare sul pubblico, veri e propri trip sonori senza ritorno.
Un complimento per la Psych Up Melodies, con l’auspicio di incontrare nel tempo altre perle come questa, capisco che scavare è difficile e che non sempre si trovino album di una certa qualità, tuttavia la speranza è sempre l’ultima a morire.  Un disco che consiglio vivamente a tutti gli amanti del genere e degli anni ’70 in generale. If we take it upon ourselves to go carefully combing through the 1970s in the Rock sphere, then we find that this period is studded with micro works worthy of note. Many are the albums that make Psychedelia, or Prog Rock, Hard Rock and the like, a world to be discovered. It never ceases to amaze, whether it is because then some albums were poorly distributed and printed in few copies, or whether it is because of a public that is probably saturated with this kind of sound, since these start as early as the 1960s, the fact remains that collectors have their hands full and treat with extreme jealousy the copy at their disposal, often valuing it at a high price. At this point the beloved (or hated depending on whether one owns the original copy) reissues, often re-mastered, take over to bring justice to these now dusty works lying in oblivion. There are even record companies springing up specifically for this kind of work. However, this is not the case with Fabrizio Di Vicino's Psych Up Melodies, which instead works with today's bands, but also remains attentive to certain dated and always Psychedelic products. One goes to rediscover a very interesting album, that of the French Nyl, born out of Cheval Fou at the hands of guitarist Michel Peteau and drummer Stéphane Rossini.
Here they make use of various collaborators among whom stands out the bassist of Magma, Jannick Top. This one album they relegate to us, is also reissued in 1993 by Legend Music, and in 2011 precisely by Psych Up Melodies, while the original is dated 1976 by Urus Records.
The record is divided into two blocks, the first being the full album consisting of eight songs plus a bonus track, the second being the band's live work.
The music on offer is infused with influences such as Krautrock, Free Jazz and the sound of some bands such as Amon Duul, Magma, Gravity Train, Pink Floyd and Ange. The artwork in the booklet that accompanies the CD is documented with photos from years gone by. The sound of the disc is good.
The disc opens with an eight-minute track entitled “Nyl” embellished with a flute. Immediately the cards are on the table, psychedelic guitars play a key role, so does the insistent rhythm, all very Space Rock, but also Zeuhl. Just close your eyes and you will find yourself swirling around the room with open arms.
It draws breath with the next “Aber,”, a real song that this time turns not to improvisation but to melody with verse and chorus. Slightly sour but pleasant vocals in a borderline ballad-like piece. The scent of the 70s is released in all its splendor in “Nyarlathotep”, from here on all short, punchy songs, full of tempo and mood changes, here is the juxtaposition also to Progressive Rock, as in the jazzy “Shatt” and its sax. A separate citation for the acoustic “Ailes D'Or” sung in the native language, French. The piece also plays on male and female vocals. In personal taste, I consider “Ibha” one of the best moments of the album, excellent Psychedelia, despite being the concluding of the first block. The short bonus track follows, readable and intangible, among insistent background sounds made with guitar and sax in evidence.
The second wave of the album, the live one, brings with it other surprises, such as an escape into the improvised and noisy world of early Pink Floyd in “Jaguar I” and “Jaguar II”. Here we can see the expressive and emotional charge that these bands in live performance manage to spill on the audience, real sound-trips with no return.
Kudos to Psych Up Melodies, with the hope of encountering more gems like this in time, I understand that digging is difficult and that one does not always find albums of a certain quality, however, hope is always the last to die.  An album that I highly recommend to all lovers of the genre and the 70s in general.
