Alcàntara

ALCÀNTARA - Tamam Shud
Autoproduzione
Genere: Progressive Rock / Psichedico / Post Prog Moderno
Supporto: lp / Bandcamp – 2025

MS

Versione Inglese:

ALCÀNTARA - Tamam Shud
Self-produced
Genre: Progressive Rock / Psychedelic / Modern Post Prog
Support: LP / Bandcamp – 2025

Sergio Manfredi Sallicano is the voice and author of the Sicilian band (Siracusa) Alcàntara, a recent reality in the Modern Post Prog scene. They made their discographic debut in 2019 with the album "Solitaire", a work that made a mark among fans of Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Airbag sounds. The band is completed by Francesco Venti (lead guitar and production), Vittorio Distefano (acoustic and slide guitar), Salvo Di Mauro (rhythm guitar), Delio Santi (bass), and Rosario Figura (drums). With them, special guests participate, including Caterina Coco (violin in "Wodwo/Vertigo") and Alessandro Caltabiano (keyboards on three tracks).
Alcàntara is an Arabic word that means something that arrives with impact but without giving a precise image, and it's perfect for the band's purpose.
Today, the album "Tamam Shud" shows a change in both sound and lyrics; the band moves slightly away from the Pink Floyd sound, perhaps too marked in "Solitaire", to approach a more modern one, so the singing no longer features total English but also includes Italian.
This new work, divided into six tracks, takes inspiration from a news story that occurred in December 1948 in a suburb of Adelaide, Australia, when the body of an elegant man was found on Somerton beach. In his pocket, he had a piece of paper containing a Persian poem with the words "Tamam Shud", which in Persian means "finished". The case remained mysterious for seventy years until the body was identified, but there was no news about the motive. This story sparks a series of considerations set to music, when you fall in love with mysteries that don't give you a definitive solution.
The Alcàntara move in a spatial, calm context, where everything seems to elevate the halo of mystery that surrounds the meaning of the tracks.
"TerryG" opens with a guitar riff and then introduces the rhythm section and keyboards that give the right atmosphere to the whole. Very beautiful is the multi-voice play and the dramatic guitar solo that keeps the pathos high. Mood swings as the genre commands, and a lot of reflection between one note and another. The singing balances English and Italian.
The longest song, with its almost nine minutes, is titled "Il Distacco", and here the Pink Floyd are evident, especially in the damn retro and psychedelic intro. The progression is intimate, curated, refined, always tinged with a halo of slight melancholy that only rarely lets a ray of sunshine in. Good singing, modern and expressive, but it's the instrumental parts that strike the listener's soul and reveal a good technical preparation of the individual components. A special praise for the recording made at Mojopin Recording in Catania, clear in frequencies, perfectly suited to enhance the individual instrumentation.
"Distant Star" is more direct than what has been listened to so far and shows a prepared and very present rhythm. Here we are at the border with Space Rock. The concluding part of the track fully enters the Porcupine Tree discography period "In Absentia" - "Deadwing".
The title track is a fragile, ethereal sound jewel, until the entry of the guitar solo inspired by David Gilmour's career. With "Sail", the voice phone also intervenes, just to stay connected in some way to the world of Steven Wilson, but surprisingly the movement suddenly becomes Blues with an ancient coda that brings back to the slow songs of the early Pink Floyd. History and modernity, this is also a winning weapon of this album.
"Wodwo/Vertigo" is embellished with Caterina Coco's violin and is a summary of the band's current sound. Again, good guitar arpeggios and voice games, also male and female.
This "Tamam Shud" meets my current musical tastes very well, so I risk not being objective in criticizing it. I understand that for many, this style may not be called Prog, which is why I've called it Modern Post Prog. However, I've given you all the necessary hints to form a totally personal idea, whatever it may be, and I'll applaud in the meantime! MS

Koyo

KOYO – Onism
Autoproduzione
Genere: Post Prog Moderno
Supporto: cd / lp – 2024

Impossibile rimanere indifferenti avanti a “Into The Dirt”, un vero e proprio schiaffo sonoro. MS

KOYO - Onism
Self-production
Genre: Modern Post Prog
Support: cd / lp - 2024

We have often wondered what could be the sound of Progressive Rock of the future, I have tried in my own small way to contribute to the question by publishing for Arcana Edizioni a book about it entitled “Post Prog Modern”, trying to analyze the bands that have in their intent to shift the coordinates of the genre through the respect of the past revisited with new ideas and, rightly, modern sounds. Certainly audiences rooted in the historical Prog Rock of the 1970s do not like the change, which is precisely why I thought of naming it Post Modern Prog, with the intention of drawing a line in time and style.
It has also been said that today much has already been created and therefore it is increasingly difficult to seek new solutions, but in spite of this, there are always groups that make music the pleasure of research.
England has always been the home of Progressive Rock, and even in the modern one they want to prove that they deserve the scepter of unconventionality. One band I have been keeping an eye on for some time is Koyo (Italian for Cojote). It was formed in 2015 in Leeds, the brainchild of former conservatory colleagues Huw Edwards (vocals, guitar), Jacob Price (sampling, synthesizers), Seb Knee-Wright (guitars), Dan Comlay (bass) and Tom Higham (drums), lovers of bands such as Ozric Tentacles, The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine.
They give the press only two studio albums and one live album, demonstrating that they do not want to forcibly release something incomplete, rather something thoughtful and curated. Like all true artists they care little for the opinion of their fans, changing their stylistic coordinates over time. Through this third album entitled “Onism” we have further confirmation of this.
We could also use the term Alternative and Psychedelic Rock, but this is known to be the problem when a band has a really marked personal character, which induces a scribe like me not to put them in a specific context.
In fact, “La Cucaracha”, in defiance of its title, comes on with a strong riff and a pounding progression that almost sounds like an oxymoron. Complay's bombastic bass opens “Mechanical Bull”, imagine listening to Radiohead not overly sad but with those guitars that in the solos don't open up to unnecessary lucubration but rather to short, nervous movements. Good attention to the choruses as well. Basic in this music there is attention to melodies, never lost sight of in this coming and going of electric sounds. “Hooked” continues the work at the listener's sides by offering a powerfully Rock sound that counterbalances Edwards' elegant and calm singing.
The riffs proceed through small Grunge influences with “Electric Eel”, but to hear something highly researched, you have to get to the instrumental “Dark Horse”, here Koyo get serious, making six minutes of energetic and non-trivial music, thanks to sampled interventions and a mighty rhythm. Now that's where the electric guitar shows its muscles.
Impossible to remain indifferent ahead of “Into The Dirt”, a real sonic slap in the face. Many of you may already be wondering where Progressive Rock resides then, the answer is simple, it lies in the numerous changes of tempo, mood and attention to detail. Certainly it is not Genesis! The longest piece has a duration of eight and a half minutes and is entitled “Is This Real”. Listening to it offers us a new, polished and in some ways unexpected approach to music by the band, with more attention to arrangements. Even the vocals are in falsetto. Speaking of oddities enter “Stoneman” and then you will realize the vastness of the Koyo world. The final track available to me is a sanguine bonus track entitled “Existential Crisis”, nomen omen. In conclusion, “Onism” is a record that certainly does not go unnoticed, a work that has very high peaks of interest, brilliant at times. This is the beauty of music for those who make it a credo of life and not simply a background soundtrack for carefree days. What a bang! MS

Mai Più Inverno

MAI PIÙ INVERNO – Lassù Gli Ultimi
Autoproduzione
Genere: Progressive Folk / Cantautore
Supporto: Spotify / Bandcamp – 2026

Hanno suonato nel disco: Domenico Vitali (chitarre, voci, basso), Francesco Via (chitarre, voci, basso, tastiere, flauto traverso), Samuele Rabbiosi (chitarre, bouzouki), Lorenzo "Bubi" Montani (percussioni), Stefano Spagnolatti (batteria), Elia Mazzoletti (voci, batteria e percussioni), Luca Peverelli (voci), Teresa Puglia (violino, voci) e Anna Bongianni (voci).
Self-produced
Genre: Progressive Folk / Singer-songwriter
Available on: Spotify / Bandcamp – 2026

I won’t hide the pleasure I feel when encountering new bands of young musicians who choose to approach music that stays far from the mundane. Mai Più Inverno hail from a region nestled between Valchiavenna and Lake Como, venturing into a singer-songwriter style of Folk characterized by strong 1970s influences. Among the instrumentation used, the bouzouki and violin stand out, but it is primarily the guitars that dominate the scene. The watercolor on the cover, a work by Bruno Ritter, perfectly represents the spirit of the album: while listening, one has the constant sensation of facing soft colors and a veil of melancholy. The photographs and graphic design were curated by Gabriella Sacco.
Performed on the album by: Domenico Vitali (guitars, vocals, bass), Francesco Via (guitars, vocals, bass, keyboards, flute), Samuele Rabbiosi (guitars, bouzouki), Lorenzo "Bubi" Montani (percussion), Stefano Spagnolatti (drums), Elia Mazzoletti (vocals, drums, and percussion), Luca Peverelli (vocals), Teresa Puglia (violin, vocals), and Anna Bongianni (vocals).
“Ad Astra” opens the journey, immediately highlighting—in just two minutes—the Mediterranean soul of a Folk sung in a heartfelt and energetic manner; it feels almost like listening to a rhythmic and resolute Francesco Guccini. The use of choral harmonies is very effective in this context. In “Donna Di Sale”, the lyrical meter is used unconventionally, reminiscent of the approach used by the unforgettable Ivan Graziani in tracks like “Scappo Di Casa”. The lyrics remain the heart of the project, giving voice to a lament for things destined to disappear; guitar arpeggios, percussion, and essential arrangements make this piece a small gem and a true cry of protest.
The rhythm changes in “L’Oroscopo”, where a particular focus is placed on the choirs that act as a counterpoint to an incisive voice, consistent with the content of the lyrics. The broken rhythm lends a playfulness to the listen, while remaining faithful to the "cultured song" formula of the 1970s. Midway through the track, electric guitars take center stage, bringing the ensemble notably close to the style of Modena City Ramblers, especially with the introduction of the violin. The finale surprises with sweet male and female vocal harmonies. The raw words of “Caterina È Morta Caterina Vola” contrast with the sweet arpeggio in the style of Angelo Branduardi in a well-structured track, while “La Piazza In Festa” showcases the band's more jovial side, enriched by Progressive Folk nuances.
Scemodiguerra (Elia Mazzoletti and Luca Peverelli) contribute to the fast-paced “Icaromenippo”, a driving ballade. This is followed by “Fuori Rotta / Minotauro”, introduced by the piano, where Mai Più Inverno fully demonstrate their technical proficiency; the song is rich in atmospheric variations, and the entry of the acoustic guitar opens up wide melodic breaths that subsequently give way to a harder, more direct section. The intro of “Encelado”, featuring multiple guitars, evokes the sound of Genesis, but once the vocals arrive, we return to the singer-songwriter style that has cradled us thus far. Similarly, “Ultimo Saturnale” follows this expressive path without deviation. The beautiful ballad “Ritorno / Tutto È Compiuto” closes this debut, presenting a group with clear ideas that will surely delight those still attached to these classic, timeless sounds. MS

Psycho Praxis

PSYCHO PRAXIS – Echoes From The Deep
Black Widow Records
Genere: Progressive Rock
Supporto: LP / CD - 2012

L'allora giovane formazione schierava Paolo Vacchelli (chitarre), Matteo Marini (basso e chitarra acustica), Paolo Tognazzi (tastiere e glockenspiel), Andrea Calzoni (voce e flauto) e Matteo Tognazzi (batteria).
“Echoes From The Deep” merita giustizia. Psycho Praxis, dove siete? Tornate: vi dobbiamo delle scuse. MS

Versione inglese:

PSYCHO PRAXIS – Echoes From The Deep
Label: Black Widow Records
Genre: Progressive Rock
Format: LP / CD (2012)

It is only right to give a voice back to this work by the Brescia-based band Psycho Praxis: it is inconceivable that such a record remains in the shadows. Although it received decent reviews upon its release in 2012, its true qualitative value far exceeds what the critics claimed at the time. Despite their appearance at the 2013 Veruno 2Days Prog +1, “Echoes From The Deep” slipped into obscurity far too soon. Yet, listened to today and compared with current productions, it reveals itself as an extraordinary work.
Are you a lover of 1970s Italian Prog and pillars such as Genesis, Camel, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Van Der Graaf Generator, or Osanna? Then make yourself comfortable and venture into this listening experience.
The then-young lineup featured Paolo Vacchelli (guitars), Matteo Marini (bass and acoustic guitar), Paolo Tognazzi (keyboards and glockenspiel), Andrea Calzoni (vocals and flute), and Matteo Tognazzi (drums). The musicians do not shy away from vigorous passages into Hard Prog territories, but they especially excel in instrumental excursions capable of giving fans the chills. Calzoni’s vocals are excellent: powerful, measured, and at times reminiscent of Bernardo Lanzetti’s timbre.
Right from the start, “Privileged Station” is a track that flees and chases itself, highlighting an enviable chemistry and an extraordinary compositional skill—all the more surprising considering it is a debut. In certain passages, they evoke Atomic Rooster in a Progressive Rock key, with rhythm changes that recall Pink Floyd’s “Echoes.” The flute, meanwhile, pays homage to the energetic style of Ian Anderson. Dominated by the organ, this is likely the most powerful episode on the record, featuring a guitar finale in pure Genesis style.
Next is “PSM,” a purely Prog track with a gothic and haunting atmosphere emphasized by synthesizers. The organ outro sounds sinister throughout, pursued by an electric guitar in a state of grace.
“Hoodlums” is a true gem: it blends bluesy undertones with an engaging melody, close to the Nordic sound of bands like Änglagård. The chorus is infectious, despite having a familiar feel. The excellent rhythmic section and Calzoni’s vocal performance deserve mention, along with a psychedelic flute passage of rare beauty.
In “Black Crow,” 1970s Genesis influences mix with those of Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso—a combination that speaks for itself. This is followed by the powerful instrumental “Awareness,” led by the Hammond organ and characterized by a pace worthy of a horror movie soundtrack.
The record closes with the splendid “Noon,” a track you never want to end, embellished with Jazz inserts and nods to the Dutch band Focus.
“Echoes From The Deep” deserves justice. It is unacceptable for such a gem to be ignored or buried under a mountain of mediocre productions. Psycho Praxis, where are you? Come back: we owe you an apology. MS

Georgeanne Kalweit

GEORGEANNE KALWEIT – Tiny Space
Etichetta: NOS Records
Genere: Rock Psichedelico / Alternative Rock
Supporto: CD / Digital – 2026

Ad accompagnare Georgeanne (voce e tastiere) troviamo i musicisti Giovanni Ferrario (basso, tastiere, programmazione), Lorenzo Corti (chitarra, organo), Beppe Mondini (batteria) e Diego Sapignoli (batteria, vibrafono).
MS

GEORGEANNE KALWEIT – Tiny Space
Label: NOS Records
Genre: Psychedelic Rock / Alternative Rock
Format: CD / Digital – 2026

Often, in music, grand structures aren't necessary to strike the listener's soul; elegance and strong compositional ideas are enough. It is on these foundations that Georgeanne Kalweit—singer-songwriter, visual artist, and performer—has built her career. Originally from Minneapolis but a resident of Italy for over thirty years, she has dedicated her life to art and sonic experimentation.
After her experiences with Delta V (2000–2004), Kalweit And The Spokes (2009–2015), and The Kalweit Project (2016–2020), the artist returns with a deeply personal and intimate work where voice, songwriting, and aesthetics merge perfectly. Her career boasts prestigious collaborations with the likes of The Dining Rooms, Vinicio Capossela, and Calibro 35.
The foundations of “Tiny Space” were laid in 2022 upon her move to Milan. Following a divorce, Georgeanne began composing the sketches for the new album using a Bontempi organ and a Technics keyboard. The final result is a collection of ten tracks, encased in mixed-media cover art created by the singer herself, with graphics by Stefano Siboni.
Sonically, influences traceable to PJ Harvey and Lou Reed’s Velvet Underground emerge, alternating between grittier moments and American Indie Pop. Accompanying Georgeanne (vocals and keyboards) are musicians Giovanni Ferrario (bass, keyboards, programming), Lorenzo Corti (guitar, organ), Beppe Mondini (drums), and Diego Sapignoli (drums, vibraphone).
The album is introduced by the title track, “Tiny Space,” whose video previews a sonic journey exploring the pain of emotional loss and the will to heal. In just over three minutes, the artist emerges as if from a soft 1960s psychedelic cloud, guided by dreamy, graceful melodies. This is followed by “Egoverse,” a song built on a few notes and nearly whispered instruments, where Kalweit’s voice plays with different registers without ever overreaching. The central theme is the desire for self-assertion clashing with insecurity, resulting in a kind of self-censorship.
The desire to get back into the game after a heartbreak and the need to regain self-confidence drive “Heavenly Thoughts,” a melancholy ballad always leaning toward psychedelic nuances. As the listening progresses, the tempo picks up, flowing into an urgent Post-Punk enriched by echo effects and electronic inserts. On the same thematic wave is “Call An Ambulance,” where the sound becomes minimal to give maximum prominence to the lyrics.
The tone shifts with “Ten Pins,” a building track that uses bowling as an allegory for the collapse of a conflicted relationship. Keyboards then accompany the melancholic “Soft Shoulder,” exploring fragilities reminiscent of certain Radiohead atmospheres, while “Crystal Clear” celebrates post-breakup rebirth with a vigor close to PJ Harvey's style, enhanced by backing vocals and distant sounds that provide depth.
The record then prepares the listener for a new season of life with “Fumbling Through February”: the month of February becomes a metaphor for spring preparing beneath the frost. The track is pleasant and delicate, yet maintains the album's psychedelic imprint. In “International Intrigue Time Zone,” the author relies on instinct to trace a sensual path where losing control becomes pleasurable. This is one of the most experimental moments of the album, characterized by electronic solutions and excellent vocal interplay.
The closing is entrusted to “Bullet Holes,” two minimal minutes with a martial feel. Georgeanne Kalweit’s talent lies in her ability to combine strong, private themes with music that serves as a perfect narrator of emotions, laid bare without unnecessary frills. She gets straight to the point, allowing us to feel the emotion alongside her—which, after all, is the very essence of music. MS

Blondiefox

BLONDIEFOX – Senza Universo
Eu Records / Defox Records
Genere: Rock Alternativo
Supporto: CD – 2024

Piacevole. MS

BLONDIEFOX – Without Universe
Eu Records / Defox Records
Genre: Alternative Rock
Format: CD – 2024

Today we're used to being subjected to music.
No, I don't want to make a pessimistic or nostalgic preamble like an old boomer, but it's the harsh reality. Trends come and go, artists are imposed by the media and all that, and we know it all too well, resulting in an intangible outcome that leaves no mark over the years. If we add to this that music today is liquid, then we're really aware that the situation is getting out of hand (not to mention AI). That's why I'm happy when I still come across small labels that, like salmon swimming upstream, work hard to release music in both optical and vinyl formats.
In this context, albeit only on CD, the duo Blondiefox is also working hard, consisting of Mirko DeFox Galliazzo (vocals) and Paul Blondie Gidoni (guitar, bass, keyboards, backing vocals), also known from Axe Hero and later X-Hero. Joining them are Roberto Benna and Aldo Menti on guitars.
The scenario is that of catchy and sometimes sophisticated Rock, sung in Italian with interesting lyrics. The inside of the disc quotes: “Extinguished candles that I will relight. Stones in the memory of names I will etch. The earth I grasp, I lift up before you. The memory, the remorse, of being alive, of being dead.”
The eleven songs were recorded in Valdagno at White Studios in 1997 and remastered by Pretty Master EQ in Alaska in 2022.
“Save Your Life” starts the journey with determination and intensity, at times adjacent to the world of Litfiba, where Galliazzo's vocal personality, quite different from Piero Pelù's, plays a leading role. The scene remains vigorous with “Il Triste Canto Dell’Uomo Bianco”, where electric guitars draw enjoyable riffs and solos. Introspective moments come from “Unico Vero Peccato”, with touching lyrics where vocals and keyboards lead to an elegant songwriting style that's easy to appreciate. The title track is cadenced in its pace, respectful of the song formula supported by choir interventions. The piece highlights the duo's knowledge of the Italian music world through a decidedly spontaneous class.
With “Close Your Eyes”, Prog moments are glimpsed in the service of typically Mediterranean melody, an interesting combination that makes the piece one of the most interesting moments of the album. The rhythm picks up with “Domani O Forse Mai”, only to return to a calm pace with the excellent “Mama”, another sophisticated composition well-interpreted by Mirko DeFox Galliazzo's voice.
“Che Te” has shards of the '70s and '80s, another showcase for vocals and keyboards that culminate in a crescendo where electric guitar makes a splendid seal. A curious sonic instrumental parenthesis comes from the electronics and bass of “Burocratias”, which hands over to “L’anima Gratuita Crudeltà”, a Rock piece with easy memorability.
The disc concludes with “Palenque”, another instrumental where electronics mark a steady pace.
For the sake of accuracy, I must point out that in the disc, all drum parts are electronic.
“Without Universe” is a varied and smooth work, between passages typical of our Italic culture and the desire to experiment, certainly a not entirely predictable approach to what concerns our understanding of the song formula. Enjoyable. MS

Nosound

NOSOUND – To The Core
Kscope
Genere: Psichedelico – Post Rock
Supporto: ep / Bandcamp – 2025

NOSOUND – To The Core
Kscope
Genre: Psychedelic – Post Rock
Support: EP / Bandcamp – 2025

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since 2005, when "Sol29" amazed all Porcupine Tree fans. The guitarist, keyboardist, composer, and singer Giancarlo Erra has known how to blend Psychedelia with the minimal sound of Post Rock with parsimony, and over the years, he releases six studio albums with various singles and EPs. The last work dates back to 2018 (not considering the 2021 solo transition album) and is titled "Allow Yourself". With this work, Erra gains the attention of a lot of audience and critics, who constantly praise every single disc. Some compare them to Sigur Rós, others to Brian Eno, however, the imprint of Steven Wilson is more marked, as well as that of the parallel project No Man with Tim Bowness, who appears as a guest vocalist.
The album cover, also realized by Giancarlo Erra, is minimal to leave entirely space to the message that wants to be passed, that of a child walking with hands in pockets and gaze directed downwards and under the corresponding adult having the same attitude. A life path where the passage of time denotes the same problems to face, and we are "at the core".
It's worth noting the return to physical instrumentation, such as drums, which makes everything warmer and sincere. "Nothing We Gave" immediately denotes the primordial approach of the Nosound style, direct, ethereal, and unmistakable. The melancholic veil is the strong point of the music, close to the atmospheres of the aforementioned bands, and I add Pink Floyd.
The sound of a moderately pondered piano introduces the title track "To The Core", a track that shines with Erra's creativity in an agnostic crescendo in search of instrumental passages that are not unnecessarily abstruse. It's the electric guitar in the finale that releases a dialogue with the soul, intimately aimed at a poignant epilogue.
The single of the EP bears the title "Worn-Out Parts", where the vocal approach is similar to that of Tom Yorke in Radiohead, everything becomes dreamy thanks also to the echo effects of the voices. These tracks all have a short duration to aim directly at the purpose without getting lost in useless phrasing that could distract the listener from the message that Erra and co. want to pass. With him play Orazio Fabbri (bass), Paolo Vigliarolo (guitars), Marco Berni (keyboards), and Daniele Michelacci (drums). Guest vocalist is also Louise Pigott.
Even more melancholic is the piano and voice "Interrupt", a sound pearl on which to close your eyes and let yourself be carried away in a sort of hypnotic lament.
"Closure" seals this EP with class, where the care for details highlights even more the essentiality of this music.
Listening to Nosound is always a pleasant experience, a passage outside the structural canons to which modern music has accustomed us, and if I tell you that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the DEC Ukraine humanitarian appeal, then there's one more reason to buy this small sonic jewel. MS
