Barbara Strozzi - Laura Catrani

BARBARA STROZZI / LAURA CATRANI – Virtuosissima Sirena
Con L’Accademia Dell'Annunciata diretta da Riccardo Doni
Arcana/Outhere
Genere: Barocco
Supporto: CD – 2026

All'armi, o pensieri!").
BARBARA STROZZI / LAURA CATRANI – Virtuosissima Sirena
With Accademia Dell'Annunciata conducted by Riccardo Doni
Arcana/Outhere
Genre: Baroque
Format: CD – 2026

When discussing music, especially that of the past, female contribution is rarely addressed. Over the centuries, the presence of women in classical and performing music was drastically limited not by a lack of talent or interest, but by precise social, religious, legal, and economic constraints. In the Western Christian context, Paul's precept of Mulier tacet in ecclesia (“Let women keep silence in the churches”) weighed heavily for a long time, alongside the moral prejudices of the era.
However, we have had honorable examples, such as Francesca Caccini, Maddalena Casulana, Leonora Baroni, and Barbara Strozzi (1619–1677).
Barbara Strozzi was the adopted (and in all likelihood biological) daughter of the poet and intellectual Giulio Strozzi and grew up in the vibrant cultural and literary environment of seventeenth-century Venice. A pupil of Francesco Cavalli, she was among the very few women of her era to publish her music in printed volumes without hiding behind a religious order or a noble name. A central figure of the Accademia degli Incogniti, her voice and compositional skill earned her the epithet of “Virtuosissima Sirena” (Most Virtuosic Siren), a portmanteau of two different epithets by which she was known: “Virtuosissima cantatrice” and “Poetica sirena”.
Soprano Laura Catrani posed a question today: how would a voice dedicated to contemporary repertoire handle the music of Barbara Strozzi? The surprising result is “Virtuosissima Sirena”, created with Accademia dell’Annunciata led by art director Riccardo Doni. Catrani, in her approach to the seventeenth-century repertoire, combines historical performance practice rigor with a sharp theatrical sensitivity in declamation and in the expressiveness of the affetti.
The work consists of ten movements and is accompanied by splendid artwork crafted in every detail, complete with a 40-page booklet featuring texts and explanations translated also into English and French. This shows true respect for anyone approaching an album's listening experience, a level of care seen less and less lately due to today's music liquidity. An added value that elevates the work. The design is by Emilio Lonardo, while the cover picture is by Laura Catrani herself, assisted by Gianni Rizzotti.
The sonic journey begins with “Godere, E Tacere”, performed in a purely instrumental version by the ensemble Accademia dell'Annunciata. It serves as an introduction to the album, emphasizing the polyphonic texture and Strozzi's harmonies before the entry of the solo voice: a madrigal to touch the feelings of the soul.
“L'Amante Segreto (from Cantate, ariette, e duetti, Op. 2)” is next, a large-scale cantata (over 9 minutes) structured in alternating sections. Strozzi employs an intimate and melancholic expressive register, where the soprano modulates the vocal line between moments of declaimed recitative and lyrical ariosos supported by the basso continuo. The protagonist sings of the impossibility of revealing their love, preferring to suffer in silence until death rather than disclose their feelings and risk rejection or shame.
Quicker tempos characterize “La Vendetta (from Cantate, ariette, e duetti, Op. 2)”, a brilliant track with an agile and snappy pace, where the vocal style becomes incisive through fast embellishments that underline the character's determination and disdain in the face of love's torments.
We now move to a composition by Giovanni Legrenzi (1626–1690), a prominent figure in Venetian music. The piece “La Savorgniana” is purely instrumental and is articulated in short contrapuntal sections with contrasting rhythms and frequent dialogues among the string instruments, included in the album to sketch the sonic context of the era.
And then comes a timeless masterpiece: “Lagrime Mie - Lamento (from Diporti di Euterpe, Op. 7)”. The musical writing alternates moments of sorrowful and slow recitative with virtuosic and tormented vocal passages, delivered with great dramatic tension as it is the lament of an imprisoned lover suffering from the impossibility of seeing his beloved (“Lagrime mie, a che vi trattenete?”). For this writer, it is one of the highest points of the entire work. Here Laura gives her absolute best, especially in terms of emotional sensitivity.
“A Pena Il Sol (from Diporti di Euterpe, Op. 7)” is more complexly structured and plays on the contrast between the luminosity of the initial pastoral/nature description and the introspective character of love's torment, moving between measured sections and arioso moments. The text describes the break of dawn (“A pena il sol con l'aureo crin risplende”) to contrast it with the inner darkness of the lover, who finds no peace even in the light of day.
There is also a moral satire with an academic touch on the hypocrisy and fickleness of the powerful (“È costume de' grandi il promettere molto e dar niente”) thanks to “Costume De' grandi (from Cantate, ariette, e duetti, Op. 2)”. It is a witty arietta with a marked rhythm. The musical structure is direct, syllabic, and almost folk-like, designed to make the satirical intent of the text immediately clear.
At this point comes the second instrumental track, “Sonata Duodecima (from Sonate concertate in stil moderno, libro secondo by Dario Castello)”. Dario Castello was among the greatest exponents of the stile moderno in Venice. “Sonata Duodecima” is a piece of great virtuosity for the instrumental ensemble, characterized by continuous and sudden changes of tempo, emotions, and dynamics (the so-called “stile fantastico”).
We return to Barbara Strozzi with “Che Si Può Fare - Cantata (from Arie, Op. 8)”, among the composer's most famous pieces. Catrani sustains expanded melodies, expressive melismas, and harmonic suspensions of deep intensity. The text is a melancholic meditation on resignation in the face of an adverse fate and the impossibility of bending fortune or love to one's desires ("Che si può fare? Se le stelle rubelle non hanno pietà...").
Finally, “Tradimento (from Diporti di Euterpe, Op. 7)”, a sudden cry of reaction upon discovering the beloved's deceit ("Tradimento, tradimento! All'armi, o pensieri!").
In conclusion, “Virtuosissima Sirena” is not merely an exercise in historical reconstruction, but a vivid, dramaturgical reading of Strozzi's poetics. Laura Catrani and Accademia dell'Annunciata strip Baroque away from academic mannerism, handing us a visceral, modern, and relentless Barbara Strozzi in her rendering of human emotions. A listening experience to rediscover a crucial page of seventeenth-century Venice and to understand how much the theater of the soul from four centuries ago can still speak, unfiltered, to our present. Laura Catrani

LAURA CATRANI – Vox In Femina
Stradivarius / Milano Dischi
Genere: Sperimentazione vocale
Supporto: CD – 2026

“Was Brauchst Du?
MS

LAURA CATRANI – Vox In Femina
Stradivarius / Milano Dischi
Genre: Vocal experimentation
Format: CD – 2026

The voice, this instrument we carry around and use differently depending on the situation, can stir emotions, make us laugh, get angry, surprise… fall in love.
In the artistic sphere, the voice has always been paired with music, but above all with theater. Some have made experimental use of it: just look at the past of Antonin Artaud, Joan La Barbara, the ever-lamented Demetrio Stratos with his polyphonies, and many others. Even today, there are those who experiment in this realm, with names like Claudio Milano (Nickelodeon), John De Leo (Quintorigo), or Romina Daniele, who might sound new to the less experienced among you.
But successful experimentation does not exist without solid foundations and talent; it is an approach where a false step is always around the corner.
This is not the case for Laura Catrani, an Italian soprano recognized in the classical and contemporary music scene for her extraordinary vocal flexibility and dedication to twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire.
Having graduated with top marks from the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan, Laura Catrani has distinguished herself through a versatile concert and theatrical career, ranging from Baroque opera to avant-garde music. She has collaborated with internationally renowned festivals (such as the Venice Biennale Musica, the Milano Musica Festival, and the Ravenna Festival) and has been chosen by numerous contemporary composers for premieres and recordings dedicated to her.
This new album “Vox In Femina” is an album for solo voice in which the female voice is explored as a total instrument, freed from orchestral or piano accompaniment. The record builds an ideal bridge between the historical masterpieces of the solo voice repertoire and contemporary Italian production.
The journey begins with “Sequenza III (Luciano Berio)”, a 1966 masterpiece composed for Cathy Berberian. It is an exploration into the infinite possibilities of vocal emission: laughter, whispers, tongue clicks, murmurs, and pitched singing alternate in a virtuosic flow of sonic micro-events. Over nine minutes of pure theater of the voice! The brief text is based on a poetic module by Markus Kutter (“Give me a few words for a woman to sing...”), and is completely deconstructed and unstructured into phonemes, syllables, and breaths, losing its syntactical meaning to become pure acoustic and emotional matter.
Next comes “Gutta Cavat Lapidem (2021 - Leonardo Marino)”, where one can savor the importance of silences and pauses. Following this, Laura accompanies herself with two claves to produce percussive sounds. The title recalls the famous Latin proverb (“La goccia scava la pietra”). Musically, it translates into a structure based on repetition, vocal percussiveness, and the gradual wearing down of sound, where minimal, repeated vocal gestures transform the timbre over time. The voice takes advantage of the phonetics of hard consonants and short vowels to simulate the rhythmic impact of a water drop.
“To Whom (2009 - Alessandro Solbiati)” is instead a page of intense dramatic lyricism and timbral concentration. Solbiati works with expressive intervals, microtonality, and modulations of vocal color ranging from breathy emissions to peaks of sharpness.
And then comes a ten-minute mini-suite entitled “Le Bechete (2009 - Matteo Franceschini)”, sixteenth-century culinary recipes that turn into art (even if they often already are in themselves). A union between present and tradition where the voice becomes the main ingredient.
Solitude is addressed in “Jeder Mensch Trägt Ein Zimmer In Sich (2013 - Federico Gardella)”; the text is a famous aphorism by Franz Kafka (taken from the “Octavo Notebooks”). The German word is syllabified and fragmented to convey the sense of isolation and introspection. Laura articulates everything while also using operatic tones.
The singer’s more pronounced “soprano” side emerges during the diction of three short verses taken from the canticles of the “Divine Comedy”; the title is “Nel Lago, L'Ora, la Notte (2020 - Paolo Marchettini)”. Here, the fusion of literature and theatricality proves robust and effective.
There is also a fairytale moment, “La Vipera ( 2020 - Fabrizio De Rossi Re)”, inspired by a fantastical tale by Leonardo da Vinci. The phonetic usage ranges from childish vocalizations to angrier moments, immersed in an avant-garde lullaby in terms of pace and structure.
“Was Brauchst Du? (Daniela Fantechi)” stems instead from the text of the homonymous poem by the Austrian poet Friederike Mayröcker (1924 – 2021). Here the voice adapts perfectly to the poem itself, moving between timbral highs and lows. The album concludes with “Stripsody (1966 - Cathy Berberian)”, amid onomatopoeic sounds inspired by the world of comic books; Laura once again demonstrates a surprising and over-the-top vocal malleability.
The accompanying booklet is very beautiful and carefully crafted, complete with track-by-track descriptions and photographs of a very young Catrani in the 1980s taken by the Rimini photographer Guido Guidi.
“Vox In Femina” is a courageous and essential work that, moving with ease between the historical memory of the avant-garde and the sharpness of contemporary creation, succeeds in the rarest of feats: transforming acoustic experimentation into pure, visceral emotion. An essential listen for anyone who wants to understand where vocal music is headed today. MS

Vade Aratro

VADE ARATRO – I Racconti Del Macero
Andromeda Relix / Lizard Records / Ma.Ra.Cash records
Genere: Heavy Metal Agreste
Supporto: LP / CD / Musicassetta / Digital – 2026

MS

VADE ARATRO – I Racconti Del Macero
Andromeda Relix / Lizard Records / Ma.Ra.Cash records
Genre: Agrestic Heavy Metal
Format: LP / CD / Cassette / Digital – 2026

A river-like review is required here; as Francesco Di Giacomo (Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso) would say: it is inexorable.
I have been writing and reviewing for music magazines and websites for over 40 years, I have seen thousands of packages containing records, but NEVER EVER a thing like this: VADE ARATRO are absolute geniuses! Maniacal care for the listener, complete with a hand-drawn envelope, bio, fanzine, hand-written description, and even couch grass! You couldn't get more agrestic than this!
It is wonderful to see, in 2026, people who still have such dedication to their work; it goes beyond passion and professionalism: this is pure love and respect.
I'll start with the fanzine titled “L’Aratro (Numero 1)”, eight pages featuring an exegesis of the concept and of the 10 tracks contained in the album “I Racconti Del Macero”. The maceri are small artificial ponds scattered across the fields, used for processing hemp up until the mid-20th century. This is followed by an interview with the band, a witty horoscope, the Macero herbarium complete with a self-diagnostic test, and much more. I assure you there is plenty to laugh about.
But who are Vade Aratro? Active since 2006, they have released four albums including this new one, “I Racconti Del Macero”: “Storie Messorie” (2008), “Il Vomere Di Bronzo” (2016), and “Agreste Celeste” (2020). They are a trio from San Giovanni in Persiceto (Bologna) consisting of Marcello Magoni (vocals, guitars, piano, accordion), Federico Negrini (bass, vocals), and Riccardo Balboni (drums, vocals).
Looking at the artwork of the digipak CD edition (crafted by Marcello Magoni with help from Nicholas Verucchi and Matteo Di Nicola), I notice a frog near the marsh on the back cover, and my mind instantly wanders toward Fiaba, a band from Syracuse that is also close to Folk Metal. Will there be analogies? We shall find out shortly.
Meanwhile, the tracks were recorded live in the studio with just a few overdubs, in order to keep as unchanged as possible the power and authenticity of this uncompromising music.
This is a concept album: a story, perhaps even an ephemeral one, of a group of small-town youths who hang out at a macero (for their own "amusement"), reaching it by bicycle and moped; yet at the same time, it is profound and rich in symbolism hidden between the lines, which I leave for you to discover during the listening experience. Heavy Metal takes care of the rest!
And speaking of music, it kicks off with “Warlord”, a title that intentionally contrasts with the bucolic setting of the album, playing on the irony of the "warlord" brought into the context of provincial life. “The bike ride at sunset towards the macero with headphones blasting Heavy Metal (Helloween) and a hand-painted T-shirt”. An epic start with a massive riff that carries a 70s flair, a gallop amidst broken drum patterns and plenty of raw energy. They remind me a bit of the Scottish band Holocaust… Magoni's raspy voice does the rest.
When Vade Aratro play, they have fun, and you can appreciate it in every single passage, which at times even verges into Prog due to its structural ambition. This is also the case with “Uovo Di Pietra”, which describes the stones resting on the edge of the macero, once used to submerge the hemp rafts. Hard to stand still while listening.
Among the longest tracks on the album is “Nel Tempo Della Canapa”, spanning well over six minutes of music. Plenty of tempo changes that forcefully lean into Folk Metal, along with a playful “na, na, na” that quickly sticks in your mind. A dip into the past, when grandmother used to tell stories about the hardship of harvesting, alongside other historical snapshots of life.
And speaking of history, memories surface of summer days spent during youth diving among the vegetation, followed by embers and dark water; the narrative unfolds in “Che Il Bagno Migliore Si Fa Nello Stagno”. The rhythm is a gritty, spinning Rocker that highlights the magnificent chemistry among the three musicians.
Halfway through the listen, the piano enters for a ballad building up in sonic intensity: “Fifty” tells of futuristic visions occurring while gazing into a moped's rearview mirror. The composition is well-crafted and full of emotional resonance.
The guitar roars back to life with “Arare Il Mare”, featuring a syncopated rhythm and inevitable headbanging. Here lies the tenacity of chasing an impossible dream.
No less impressive is “Il Ragazzo Con La Giacca Rossa”, a memory dedicated to a schoolmate who passed away tragically.
With “Il Recinto Dei Morti”, we immerse ourselves in a context as dark as it is fascinating: hanging around a graveyard at night, reading the ancient and peculiar names of the deceased… And then, an encounter with an old man. Folk returns in the intro, alongside bursts of Punk: an intricate track and the perfect soundtrack to the event. The journey continues grinding miles with “Panzer”, a German tank sunk into the mud of the macero.
And as often happens, dulcis in fundo, “Le Rane Di San Lorenzo”, the longest piece on the album lasting nearly seven minutes, where Vade Aratro lay all their cards on the table. For this writer, the finest moment of the entire concept. Meticulous in its details and sudden mood shifts, it captures the croaking of frogs with eyes turned toward the stars.
And the connection with Fiaba? It is indeed there, and I notice it especially in the Folk Metal contexts.
Hop on your bicycle, kick-start your moped, and let yourselves be carried away by the rhythm of Vade Aratro. “I Racconti Del Macero” is a little masterpiece of sonic craftsmanship that will make you smile, reflect, and headbang among the couch grass. If you are looking for professionalism, heart, and that touch of good old-fashioned madness, this is the album of the year. Take note and dive into the pond; in the meantime… Hats off!
P.S. I wrote this review all in one breath, just as they recorded the album, precisely so as not to lose those raw first impressions and to relish its sincerity. MS

Marco "Zeus" Marchetti

MARCO “ZEUS” MARCHETTI – Sea Lands
DistroKid
Genere: Rock Progressivo
Supporto: Digital / Bandcamp – 2026

MS

Versione Inglese:

MARCO “ZEUS” MARCHETTI – Sea Lands
DistroKid
Genre: Progressive Rock
Format: Digital / Bandcamp – 2026

Marco "Zeus" Marchetti is an Italian guitarist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist known primarily for his work in the Progressive Rock scene and in atmospheric instrumental music. Often associated with wide-ranging conceptual projects, Marchetti combines remarkable technical skill with a compositional sensitivity that favors sonic storytelling. His melodic structures draw as much from Prog symphonism (Genesis, Steve Hackett, Camel) as they do from acoustic Folk and modern Fusion. His stylistic hallmark lies in the constant dialogue between acoustic instruments and sustained electric guitars, used to craft true soundscapes. The artist defines his genre/style as “Emotional Landscape,” with the intent of evoking images and visual suggestions through music alone.
The album “Sea Lands” presents itself as a conceptual and exploratory journey tied to the maritime element, to routes toward uncharted lands, and to the loneliness of the sailor. With a lean overall duration that is completely free of filler, the record blends Folk, Progressive Rock, and delicate ambient nuances.
Immediate proof of this is the title track “Sea Lands”, a composition based mainly on the electric guitar and featuring a sweet piano moment at the end: a true snapshot of the marine landscape from which serenity and beauty spring forth.
“Terra Australis” has a sustained yet never intrusive rhythm; after all, one of the characteristics of Marchetti's music is precisely a sense of calm, in which lessons from the past clearly emerge, especially those of Camel.
The waves crash onto the beach in “Pacific Waves”, a track bordering on Funky where the guitar initially introduces the refrain before leaving center stage to the keyboards. However, there is no shortage of a technical yet never self-indulgent guitar solo.
Indeed, melody remains the true protagonist, best appreciated in the excellent “The Sailor”. Small splinters of Neo-Prog surface from time to time, while the pace remains calm and reflective throughout.
The tempo picks up in “Kangaroo”, a track with a distinctly '80s sound, another piece where keyboards and guitar engage in a dialogue without ever crowding each other out.
In the sea, one even encounters a black dolphin, to which Marchetti gives musical form in “Black Dolphin”, one of the finest moments of the entire album. Upon listening, one gets the feeling that the guitar gives actual voice to the mammal, releasing a sort of hiss every now and then.
The closing falls to “Sea Lands Reprise”, a perfect full-circle moment where the atmospheres turn cinematic thanks to the use of evocative keyboards.
In just twenty-five minutes, “Sea Lands” manages to condense an immersive and no-frills listening experience, confirming Marco "Zeus" Marchetti's knack for creating true emotional landscapes. By renouncing the sung word to rely entirely on the narrative power of sound, the album settles comfortably between the nuances of Rock guitar and the fascination with the unknown, offering a brief yet atmosphere-dense musical journey. Highly recommended for those who love getting lost in contemplative musical territories and for anyone seeking a soundtrack for their inner journeys within instrumental music. Much serenity. MS

Felona E Sorona - La storia

FELONA E SORONA
Orme - 1973

A breve l’equilibrio finisce.

MS

Versione Inglese:

FELONA E SORONA
Le Orme - 1973
The Struggle Between Good and Evil

By Massimo Salari

The story behind Felona e Sorona by the Venetian group Le Orme is rich in anecdotes, but above all, in spontaneity. It is a concept album that surprised even the artists themselves, who did not expect such success from a record that, by their own account, was written almost on the spot. Le Orme are part of the quintessential trio of Italian Prog; indeed, when speaking of Prog in Italy, one immediately thinks of Premiata Forneria Marconi, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, and Le Orme. Critics, however, never reserved a deep affection for the trio—Pagliuca (keyboards), Tagliapietra (bass, guitar), and Dei Rossi (drums)—splitting into two factions and often relegating them to third place in popularity behind the aforementioned heavyweights. The success of the single Gioco di Bimba, taken from the fortunate Uomo di Pezza (Philips – 1972), was a double-edged sword for Le Orme: it granted them mainstream popularity while distancing them from the elite of highbrow music, which was never inclined toward the commercial scene. Nothing could be further from the truth, as Le Orme composed songs over the years of high technical and melodic caliber—a perfect blend that prompted many people to approach this musical genre over time. They were often compared to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, but only superficially because they were a trio. In reality, Tagliapietra confessed (in an interview given to the website ROCK IMPRESSIONS in 2008) that their reference points included the less fortunate Quatermass instead.

Repeating a success like Uomo di Pezza was no easy feat. As the saying goes, you must strike while the iron is hot, so the trio threw themselves heart and soul into writing this new album. There was a desire to show listeners that they were, in every sense, a Progressive Rock band. Hence, the choice of a concept album where the tracks flow seamlessly, making the entire side feel like a single piece—the beloved suite so cherished by Prog fans. It should be noted that Felona e Sorona closes their trilogy of albums that began in 1971 with Collage (Philips) and continued with the fortunate, previously mentioned Uomo di Pezza (Philips – 1972). The album cover is historic, featuring a painting by the Mantuan artist Lanfranco Frigeri titled I Pianeti del Sogno ("The Planets of Dreams"), portraying a man and a woman that leaves room for various interpretations. Frigeri is considered one of the fathers of Italian Surrealism. Equally important was the production by Gian Piero Reverberi. Felona e Sorona took shape during travels, dinners, and soundchecks on their 1972 tour alongside Peter Hammill, who had recently split from Van der Graaf Generator at the time.

The leader of the English band, tasked with opening concerts for Le Orme, was so impressed by the movements of this long suite that he considered creating an English-language version to pitch to Tony Stratton-Smith of the prestigious Charisma Records label. Entering the UK market was certainly a coveted prize for any Italian musician, and fortunately, the dream came true, leading to fifteen concerts in two weeks, including a date at the Marquee Club. As for the concept itself, Felona e Sorona, as mentioned, are two planets orbiting the same space, unaware of each other's existence and light-years apart. Felona is bright and sunny, rich in peace and love, with bubbles floating in the wind—a place where serenity reigns supreme. Sorona (from sorrow, a name suggested by Hammill), on the other hand, is small, dark, and sad. Here, the inhabitants wander around in an abulic, vegetative state without smiles, like ghosts. Yet, surprisingly, the true protagonist of the story is God—or rather, the Supreme Being who reigns over the universe. Unfortunately, he feels ignored by the inhabitants of Felona, who no longer seem to care about his existence, happy and content in their selfish state. Thus, the Almighty chooses to turn his gaze of divine light toward Sorona, taking it away from its twin planet. Consequently, tranquility never reigns for both at the same time, because the light of one inevitably means darkness for the other.

Side A of the vinyl tells the story of Felona, a suite composed of four movements, starting with Sospesi nell’Incredibile, where Pagliuca's keyboards converse with Dei Rossi's refined rhythm section. From the very first notes, one senses the band's desire to be considered Progressive Rock in every respect. Emphasis reigns in a crescendo that pauses on a classical harmonic progression. Then comes the beautiful, soft voice of Aldo Tagliapietra, recounting the events of the concept. The bucolic environment is vividly described in the lines: "And when dawn rises over the world, the breath of life spreads around, the honey-colored leaves absorb its warmth." Vigorous drum rolls support the electronic keyboards while the atmosphere allows the listener to travel through the cosmos with open eyes. It is rare to find a drum solo—even a brief one—on a studio album, but here is an instance that leads directly into Felona. Happiness flows not only from the lyrics but also from the chime of bells. Its nursery-rhyme structure recalls the successful 1972 track Gioco di Bimba.

"A bright light slowly emerges, offering the sight of large white bubbles... There are no secrets in the transparent spheres, they mirror each other in the air, spreading joy; clear and serene, thoughts fly, women and cicadas speak of love."

The ease with which the trio finds catchy solutions on the verge of commercial Pop is surprising, as is their ability to embed them within an experimental music context. Everything appears simple on the surface, but upon careful analysis, refined craftsmanship is once again evident. Another brief musical passage is the almost ecclesiastical La Solitudine di Chi Protegge il Mondo. The Supreme Being exclaims: "Here, serenity reigns supreme now. There is no one who needs me anymore." And so comes L’Equilibrio, thanks to God turning his gaze toward Sorona. For a moment, the two planets are equalized—one loses light, the other receives it. It is a muscular track in which Le Orme lay all their cards on the table. The conclusion is splendid, with God's statement: "I will turn my gaze toward those waiting for a gesture of mine to give meaning to their life." Dripping piano notes seal the word "life," sustained by Tagliapietra's crystal-clear vocals.

At this point, the splendid ritual of the turntable forces us to flip to Side B, which focuses on Sorona, a suite divided into five movements. It is the dark planet itself that begins the proceedings, which immediately turn somber with the description of its terrain: a spectral land composed of gray earth, black swamps, barren yellowed reeds, and forgotten old cities shrouded in dense fog. Naturally, the music is grounded in heavy sounds, while Aldo slowly interlaces the words, giving the verse an even heavier weight. Then comes L’Attesa Inerte for divine light; the rhythm beats like an anxious heart expecting events: "A sudden light approaches... Now it is here."

Ritratto di un Mattino is the track that satisfies everyone—both lovers of traditional songs and experimental searchers alike. The vocals carrying the words are splendid: "Happiness cannot be found within yourself, but in the love you will one day give to others." The music opens up to a new world of hope; listening to it feels almost like feeling the sun's warmth on your face, while eyes accustomed to darkness squint to avoid taking in too much harsh light all at once. For an instant—just the moment it takes for the Divine gaze to shift between planets—the lives of both are equal, but it does not last long. As Sorona rejoices, Felona begins its slow decline. Soon, the balance ends. The conclusion is entrusted to the instrumental track Ritorno al Nulla, heavily dramatic and relentlessly repetitive like a boulder rolling in a sound loop where the drums once again play a fundamental role. The cosmic work is complete, leaving the listener with a feeling of completeness and satisfaction. Ultimately, the moral of Felona e Sorona is that of a full circle—the classic circle of life, where we simple humans are always waiting for a new day.

For Italian Progressive Rock, 1973 was an important year, filled with great albums created through imagination, inventiveness, the courage to dare, and above all, being true to oneself, because the individual is a standalone entity. All of this led to healthy competition in art and results that were as varied as they were surprising. Such is the case with Felona e Sorona, a work that stands among the highest peaks of Italian music in general. MS
