Yugen

YUGEN - Picture #2
Filibusta Records (distribuzione IRD / Altafonte Italia)
Genere: Jazz Moderno Strumentale
Supporto: Spotify / Amazon Music – 2026

La traccia d’apertura “The Night Spoke To Me” è immediatamente atmosferica… Riflessiva.
“More Than Meets The Eye” è basata sulla stratificazione progressiva.
MS

Versione Inglese:

YUGEN - Picture #2
Filibusta Records (distribution IRD / Altafonte Italia)
Genre: Modern Instrumental Jazz
Format: Spotify / Amazon Music – 2026

First of all, the Yugen featured in this work are not to be confused with the excellent,同名 Milanese Avant-Prog/RIO ensemble led by Francesco Zago. This lineup moves within different soundscapes, combining modern Prog sensitivity, evocative atmospheres, Chinese/Eastern nuances, or fluid art-rock sonorities that alternate intimate moments with elaborate instrumental textures.
They are a trio from Salento formed in 2020 from the convergence of three musicians with diverse backgrounds: Katya Fiorentino (piano and synth), Stefano Compagnone (electric/acoustic bass), and Maurizio De Tommasi (drums and percussion). The name Yūgen (an aesthetic concept from Japanese tradition tied to subtle grace and the visceral experience of the unknown) fully reflects their stylistic identity: a blend of contemporary Jazz, Rock dynamics, electronic textures, and a strong cinematic vocation.
Their journey began with their debut “Tears And Light” (released by the renowned Apulian label Dodicilune in 2023), which led them to win prominent competitions such as Forum Live Jazz (2022) and the 8th edition of the Premio Carlo Gargioni in the Jazz category, culminating in 2026 with their victory at the 23rd edition of the Premio Nazionale L'Artista che non c'era (Instrumental Section).
This new release “Picture #2” presents itself as an intimate and multifaceted work, where timbral research and the layering of arrangements play a central role. The album thrives on continuous contrasts between rhythmic dynamics alternating with contemplative pauses, in a constant dialogue between order, light, and half-light. The contribution of individual instrumental elements builds an expressive mosaic that moves from evolved Rock foundations to explore ambient and acoustic nuances.
The opening track “The Night Spoke To Me” is instantly atmospheric… Reflective. The piano guides a nocturnal texture supported by a measured rhythm section, aimed at touching the listener's most sensitive soul by drawing them into a limbo outside any present context, isolating and cradling them.
“From The Bin To The Sunrise” is the album's single and features a faster tempo. The track sees the introduction of Alessandro Dell'Anna's classical guitar, which dialogues with Katya Fiorentino's piano and Compagnone's bass. The structure evolves from a subdued theme ("bin") toward a brighter, more expressive harmonic opening ("sunrise").
We move on to “When Order Fell In Love With Chaos”, starting with a classical introduction before gradually flowing into the driving Rock rhythms of De Tommasi's drums, creating a dynamic wall of sound based on the contrast between rigor and explosive energy.
“Risveglio Di Settembre” is the only track with an Italian title and is characterized by a lyrical, autumnal touch, centered on the piano's melodic delivery and warmer, more evocative sonorities. A melancholy glance out the window while it rains outside.
To encounter sonic and structural experimentation, one must reach “The Diver U-Bow”, a track focused on timbral exploration and low frequencies, where the use of bass and percussion soundscapes recreates the submerged atmosphere suggested by the title.
The title track is highly minimalist, reminiscent of certain passages by the Nordic band Landberk, but here it is always the piano being barely touched rather than the guitar; caressed as if not wanting to disturb the quiet harmonically created by a profoundly touching composition. The pinnacle of the entire record, to be listened to in religious silence—and don't be surprised if you find tears tracing your face.
“More Than Meets The Eye” is built on progressive layering. The main theme is enriched passage after passage with counter-melodies and excellent percussive touches by Maurizio De Tommasi. Time expands further in the deliberate silences of “Time”, where the pauses make the music for a result that is nothing short of dreamlike.
Closing duties belong to “Petricore”, where Stefano Compagnone's warm bass makes all the difference.
“Picture #2” establishes Yugen as one of the most interesting and mature instrumental outfits on the new Italian scene. The Salento trio succeeds in transforming the wordless song-form into a true story told through images, always maintaining a fine balance between the technical rigor of their Jazz matrix and a deep harmonic sensitivity. A cohesive, profound, and multifaceted record that requires attentive listening to reveal every nuance, positioning itself as a benchmark for anyone searching for pure, courageous, and vision-evoking music. Give it a chance and you won't regret it. MS
