Da Oslo un’altra piacevole sorpresa sonora dalle influenze psichedeliche anni ’70, quelle care ai primi Pink Floyd, loro si chiamano Sykofant. La parola “sicofante” deriva dall'antico termine greco per qualcuno che diffonde pettegolezzi o cerca di massimizzare i guadagni personali a spese degli altri. La band si forma per il volere di Emil Moen (voce, chitarra) e Per Semb (chitarra), con loro suonano Melvin Treider alla batteria, e Sindre Haugen al basso.
L’album di debutto dal titolo omonimo approfondisce temi esistenziali come il tempo, l'alienazione, la ricerca di significato e il rapporto dell'umanità con la natura.
I sei pezzi che compongono l’album sono tutti correlati per un’esperienza sonora di cinquantacinque minuti contigui.
Dentro quest’album si possono incontrare davvero numerose influenze di generi, dal Funk al Pop, dalla Psichedelia al Blues sino al Jazz. Punti di riferimento possono essere estrapolati da gruppi come Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Yes e Rush, ma anche da formazioni moderne come Madrugada, Opeth, Mastodon e Porcupine Tree.
Dunque suoni dei tempi che furono s’intrecciano a soluzioni moderne con un retrogusto di semplicità acustica.
Su una ritmica intrigante l’album comincia con “Pavement Of Colors”, un cammino infarcito di cambi di tempo e coralità, al cospetto di un Rock coinvolgentemente diretto. Le chitarre elettriche la fanno da padrone, ma anche la scelta di un refrain facilmente memorizzabile risulta essere indovinata. Il pezzo è incastonato con il successivo “Between Air And Water”, dodici minuti abbondanti dove le chitarre richiamano oltremodo il primo periodo dei Pink Floyd, anche nel cantato. Ai più nostalgici di voi potrebbe scendere anche una lacrima.  Nella parte centrale, godibile anche il frangente Hard Prog in stile Porcupine Tree. Le parti strumentali mettono in evidenza una buona tecnica individuale oltre che un adeguato amalgama fra gli elementi.
Attraverso “Monuments Of Old” si può apprezzare il lato più intimistico della band, quello impreziosito da quelle trame di malinconia che soltanto certe band del nord sanno tessere. Viene spontaneo affrontare l’ascolto a occhi chiusi. Ma come il genere Prog esige, ecco nel cammino subentrare il cambiamento per una botta di adrenalina Rock sanguigna.
Un arpeggio apre “Between The Moments”, brano inizialmente nostalgico quanto basta per poi a sua volta partire su assolo di chitarra entusiasmanti.
I dieci minuti di “Strangers” sanno come coinvolgere un ascoltatore di vecchia data, grazie a riff ficcanti e crescendo sonori micidiali per poi concludersi nell’oscurità di una Psichedelia lontana. La chiusura spetta alla splendida “Forgotten Paths”, canzone top dell’album con tanto d’interventi mellotron e un cantato molto melodico. Saranno quattordici minuti che vi sembreranno cinque. Da sottolineare anche il ritmo centrale del brano nella fase strumentale che richiama oltremodo i Pink Floyd di “Echoes”.
La grafica che accompagna l’ottimo booklet di Morena Bosiglau, sposa alla perfezione le atmosfere respirate durante l’ascolto fra colori vivaci e altri più tenui, come la musica contenuta in quest’ottimo debutto che consiglio davvero a tutti gli amanti del Rock in senso generale. Annotatevi il nome Sykofant. MS

From Oslo another pleasant sonic surprise with 70s psychedelic influences, those dear to early Pink Floyd, they are called Sykofant. The word “sycophant” comes from the ancient Greek term for someone who spreads gossip or seeks to maximize personal gain at the expense of others. The band was formed at the behest of Emil Moen (vocals, guitar) and Per Semb (guitar), with them playing Melvin Treider on drums, and Sindre Haugen on bass.
The self-titled debut album delves into existential themes such as time, alienation, the search for meaning, and humanity's relationship with nature.
The six pieces that make up the album are all related for a sound experience of fifty-five contiguous minutes.
Inside this album one can truly encounter numerous genre influences, from Funk to Pop, from Psychedelia to Blues all the way to Jazz. Points of reference can be extrapolated from bands such as Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Yes, and Rush, but also from modern formations such as Madrugada, Opeth, Mastodon, and Porcupine Tree.
So sounds from the old days are interwoven with modern solutions with an aftertaste of acoustic simplicity.
Over an intriguing rhythmic beat the album begins with “Pavement Of Colors”, a journey infused with tempo changes and chorality in the presence of engagingly straightforward Rock. Electric guitars lead the way, but the choice of an easily memorized refrain also proves to be guessable. The piece is embedded with the following “Between Air And Water”, twelve long minutes where the guitars recall the early Pink Floyd period beyond measure, even in the singing. To the most nostalgic among you, a tear might even fall.  In the middle section, the Porcupine Tree-style Hard Prog fringe is also enjoyable. The instrumental parts showcase good individual technique as well as adequate amalgamation between the elements.
Through “Monuments Of Old” one can appreciate the more intimate side of the band, the one embellished with those textures of melancholy that only certain northern bands know how to weave. It comes naturally to approach listening with one's eyes closed. But as the Prog genre demands, here on the way change takes over for a blood-curdling Rock adrenaline rush.
An arpeggio opens “Between The Moments”, a song initially nostalgic enough to then in turn depart on rousing guitar solos.
The ten-minute “Strangers” knows how to engage a longtime listener, thanks to punchy riffs and killer sonic crescendos and then concluding in the darkness of distant Psychedelia. Closing falls to the splendid “Forgotten Paths”, the album's top song complete with mellotron interventions and a very melodic vocal. It will be fourteen minutes that feel like five. Also noteworthy is the song's central rhythm in the instrumental phase, which is exceedingly reminiscent of Pink Floyd's “Echoes”.
The graphics accompanying the excellent booklet by Morena Bosiglau, perfectly matches the atmospheres breathed while listening between bright colors and other more muted ones, like the music contained in this excellent debut that I really recommend to all Rock lovers in a general sense. Take note of the name Sykofant. MS
