Potremmo definire oggi una band come “storica” pur avendo suonato un genere in voga negli anni ’70 ma che si è formata nel 1990? Il tempo passa inesorabilmente e ci racconta sempre storie differenti alle quali solo noi sappiamo dare un vero peso specifico quantificandone la stazza e il momento. Diventa dunque un discorso prettamente soggettivo, ad esempio io reputo i genovesi Jus Primae Noctis una band storica pur non avendo rilasciato numerose testimonianze discografiche.
Il primo nome è stato Third Position, un gruppo Rock goliardico, a metà fra la musica anni '60 e la rivista anni '50. Dopo differenti cambi di formazione nel 1994 si esibiscono per la prima volta con il nome Jus Primae Noctis.
L’anno successivo è uno dei migliori per la band, con oltre cinquanta concerti, passaggi televisivi, e la qualificazione fra i vincitori del concorso nazionale "Arte Dal Mare". In più, parte una tournée nell'Italia meridionale che conclude una fortunata stagione estiva. Nello stesso anno registrano "Vivere Di Notte", inserito nella compilation dei gruppi genovesi "Rustico cd ". Nel 1996 vengono premiati come migliore band emergente al festival "MusicAlbaro" di Genova.
Nel 1997 si cimentano nell’arte musica/poesia per lo spettacolo “Manifesto Al Futurismo” con le poesie di Marinetti, Blake, Buzzi, Folgore e Yeats. L’evento è registrato nel disco “Live Alle Muse” pubblicato solamente nel 2000. Nel 2002 autoproducono il live bootleg "Aeropittura” con improvvisazioni dal vivo e brani di band storiche come King Crimson, PFM, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes e Van Der Graaf Generator, loro muse. Seguono numerose altre sostituzioni nella line up per giungere al 2019 con la formazione storica del 1991 composta da Marco Fehmer (voce e chitarre), Beppi Menozzi (tastiere), Mario A. Riggio (batteria) a cui si aggiungono il chitarrista Pietro Balbi e il bassista Alessandro "Beza" Bezante. E finalmente nel 2019 è la volta dell’esordio ufficiale intitolato “Istinto” (Nadir Music). Servono tuttavia ulteriori cinque anni per godere di un loro nuovo lavoro in studio, e ci riescono con “Man Of Air”, undici canzoni di sano Progressive Rock rivisitate dal loro primo stesso album e cantate in inglese.
La strumentale “Overture” mette immediatamente sul banco quali sono le caratteristiche della band e da dove derivano, fra suoni atmosferici, enfasi, e movimenti moderni provenienti dal background Spock’s Beard. Segue “Quarto”, un pezzo che parla della follia e dedicato a Syd Barrett. Si resta sulla strada dell’infermità mentale affrontando l’argomento di un incendio in un istituto in cui si mettono in evidenza le negligenze di uno stato assente nei confronti di questi pazienti con “Institute Of Mental Health, Burning”.  Il pezzo Post Punk è la rielaborazione di un brano di Peter Hammill (Van Der Graaf Generator) tratto dall’album “Nadir's Big Chance” del 1975. Si entra in un mondo Prog Psichedelico attraverso “In The Dark”, strumentale che affronta il viaggio di un neonato nell’utero della madre, ma che gli autori accostano anche a quello di un viaggio spaziale per un ritorno verso la terra. Il tema è sostenuto principalmente dal piano e il finale immerge emotivamente nel battito cardiaco di nostra madre e in ciò che lei sente e vive. Ritorna il refrain iniziale in “The First Time I Saw The Light”, brano prossimo alla formula canzone. La breve strumentale “DDDDD” conduce a “A Story”, infarcita di suoni etnici e percussioni, un tassello che fa intendere al meglio la volontà della band di ricercare emozioni in differenti stili musicali. Le qualità tecniche dei singoli elementi si possono apprezzare maggiormente in “The Man Of Air And The Prey” a tratti prossima all’Hard Prog.
“Kites” è un pezzo prettamente Neo Prog dall’andamento gioioso, ed è una composizione fra le più vecchie della band risalente a metà degli anni ’90.
“Urgency” è un brevissimo acustico di chitarra che inevitabilmente richiama alla memoria lo storico “Horizons” dei Genesis e conduce all’ultimo pezzo intitolato “The Prop”, massiccio e ricco di enfasi.
Gli Jus Primae Noctis hanno quindi voluto dare nuova linfa al passato “Istinto” e l’operazione in effetti dona una freschezza aggiunta, ora però li attendiamo in una nuova prova fatta di inediti perché l’aperitivo va bene, ma poi viene fame. MS

Could we today define a band as “historical” despite having played a genre in vogue in the 1970s but formed in 1990? Time passes inexorably and always tells us different stories to which only we know how to give real specific weight by quantifying their tonnage and moment. It therefore becomes a purely subjective matter, for example I consider the Genoese Jus Primae Noctis to be a historical band despite not having released many records.
The first name was Third Position, a goliardic Rock band, somewhere between 60s music and 50s revue. After different lineup changes in 1994 they performed for the first time under the name Jus Primae Noctis.
The following year is one of the best for the band, with more than fifty concerts, television passages, and qualification among the winners of the national competition “Art from the Sea”. In addition, they start a tour of southern Italy that ends a successful summer season. In the same year they record “Vivere Di Notte”, included in the compilation of Genoese bands “Rustico cd ”. In 1996 they are awarded as the best emerging band at the “MusicAlbaro” festival in Genoa.
In 1997 they tried their hand at art music/poetry for the show “Manifesto Al Futurismo” with poems by Marinetti, Blake, Buzzi, Folgore and Yeats. The event is recorded on the album “Live Alle Muse” released only in 2000. In 2002 they self-released the live bootleg “Aeropittura” with live improvisations and songs by such historic bands as King Crimson, PFM, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes and Van Der Graaf Generator, their muses. Numerous other replacements in the line up follow to arrive in 2019 with the historical lineup of 1991 consisting of Marco Fehmer (vocals and guitars), Beppi Menozzi (keyboards), Mario A. Riggio (drums) joined by guitarist Pietro Balbi and bassist Alessandro “Beza” Bezante. And finally in 2019 is the time of the official debut entitled “Istinto” (Nadir Music). However, it takes another five years to enjoy their new studio work, and they succeed with “Man Of Air”, eleven songs of healthy Progressive Rock revisited from their first album itself and sung in English.
The instrumental “Overture” immediately puts on the table what the band's characteristics are and where they come from, between atmospheric sounds, emphasis, and modern movements from the Spock's Beard background. “Quarto” follows, a piece about madness and dedicated to Syd Barrett.
It stays on the path of insanity by addressing the topic of an institution fire in which the negligence of an absent state toward these patients is highlighted with “Institute Of Mental Health, Burning.”  The Post Punk piece is a reworking of a Peter Hammill (Van Der Graaf Generator) song from the 1975 album “Nadir's Big Chance”. One enters a Psychedelic Prog world through “In The Dark”, an instrumental that deals with the journey of a newborn baby in its mother's womb, but which the authors also juxtapose with that of a space journey for a return to earth. The theme is sustained mainly by piano, and the finale emotionally immerses us in our mother's heartbeat and what she feels and experiences. The opening refrain returns in “The First Time I Saw The Light”, a track close to the formula song.
The short instrumental “DDDDD” leads to “A Story”, infused with ethnic sounds and percussion, a piece that best conveys the band's willingness to seek excitement in different musical styles. The technical qualities of the individual elements can be appreciated most in “ The Man Of Air And The Prey” at times close to Hard Prog.
“Kites” is a purely Neo Prog piece with a joyful tempo, and is one of the band's oldest compositions dating back to the mid-1990s.
“Urgency” is a very short acoustic guitar piece that inevitably calls to mind the historic ‘Horizons’ by Genesis and leads to the last piece entitled ‘The Prop’, which is massive and full of emphasis.
Jus Primae Noctis thus wanted to breathe new life into the past “Istinto”, and the operation actually gives an added freshness, now, however, we await them in a new test made up of unreleased songs because the appetizer is fine, but then comes hunger. MS
